THE BOXING DAY
2008-01-08 15:37:00 In most of the countries of the Commonwealth, the day after Christmas is observed as THE BOXING DAY. A public holiday in most of the counties, it originated as day of giving gifts to employees and poor people. The public holiday is recognised in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, as well as many other members of the Commonwealth of Nations. It has sporting traditions; especially fox hunting and the famous Boxing Day round in the English Premier League, and is the day when stores launch the most significant sales period in the retail cycle. In Great Britain there are two interesting traditions of Boxing Day and Christmas Crackers. Boxing Day takes its name from the ancient practice of opening boxes that contained money given to those who had given their service during the year. It was also the day when alms boxes, placed in churches on Christmas Day, were opened. The money was then given to the priest or used to help the poor and needy. Another name for Boxing ...

Boxing Day Sales 2007...
2008-01-08 06:45:00 ... was quite a success for me, because I got this incredible pair of Ted Baker heels for this great low price. I mean, it's almost impossible to say no when they were about 55% off and felt so comfortable! Not to mention the elegant shape of the heel!I think it was the cute row of buttons at the back that did it, because I'm normally not a fan of shoes with the pointed toe. And the green suede should look grand with perfectly opaque dark tights and something short, don't you think?Photo cred: myself
Happy New Year!
2008-01-05 00:10:00 So I’m a few days behind. Leave me alone. So the Mrs and myself spent our first Christmas in Toronto, meaning I was also one of those crazed loons who was out at 4am on Boxing day (the closest Canadian equivalent to Black Friday). Not a bad haul either. I came home with a copy ...

2007-12-30 03:02:00 Boxing Day sucked, IMO. I did manage to get some strategic items like Curry Cashews from Holt’s. For the most part everything was the same price. I looking high and low for tall flat black boots and was denied everywhere. If I did find something, it was too big, ill fitting, ...

2007-12-29 17:23:00 Well, I did go shopping on Boxing Day. I bought some more Christmas decorations and some birthday presents...so I can't really post it here..hehe..Anyway, these few days, I have been good, staying at home..just relaxing and also went for a job interview yesterday...I have been thinking whether should I go back to work..with the rising prices of stuff...I guess I should...don't want to go back to night shifts if I can, so keep my fingers cross for something to come up....

Boxing Day
2007-12-28 00:00:00 Hi Guys - I had a lovely Christmas with my family - good company, nice food and a chilled out time. We played cards, chatted and watched a bit of TV which makes a change for me. We watched that old faithful film The African Queen with Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart - great stuff. Today my nephew left and went back to London and my son arrived from London and I had open house and at least 30 friends and neighbours turned up and and came and went till latish this evening - I'm now in bed with Mac doing this quickly before crashing out - I'm quite tired now. The place is a tip but never mind - I'll sort it all out tomorrow! So, good night for now - hope you're all well!
Bono's Boxing Day Bliss
2007-12-27 16:19:00 It seems we all have annoying family holiday traditions. But celebrities can be just as bad. For U2 frontman Bono, Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) means a trip to the races. The “Vertigo” singer took his wife, Ali, and four children to Leopardstown in Dublin, Ireland for the yearly event. ...
Boxing Day
2007-12-27 14:16:00 It finally happened. After years of refusing to go out on Boxing Day, we succumbed to our kids' pressure and went to the mall. It was a nut house, as I was expecting, and we even weren't at the busiest mall in town (we went to Conestoga Mall instead of Fairview Park). On our way there, we were amazed at the spectacle of the trees. They all had turned into white, even though it had barely snowed the night before. Gaby took a few pictures from the car (there are more pictures in a previous post by Guillermo). Some of the pictures taken by GabyThe parking lot was absolutely full, but that is never a problem when I'm driving, as I normally manage to find the best parking spot possible (as seen in a previous post). And yesterday wasn't an exception, as you can see. Gaby hates the fact that I'm so lucky; had she been the one driving, we would have ended parking closer to our home than to the mall... A picture of my mini-van from the door, and then a picture from the driver'...
Boxing Day
2007-12-27 06:04:00 Christmas is now all over and I hope you all had as much a wonderful time as I did, but now we can have even more funtimes in the sales. Wahoo. Haha. In light of the situation, I've picked out a couple of haute knitwear pieces from the Topman half price sale. Check 'em out: So what did Santa Claus bring you?! I'm eager to know.

I could be wrong, but I thought Boxing Day in the ...
2007-12-27 00:44:00 I could be wrong, but I thought Boxing Day in the UK was traditionally the day employers gave gifts to employees, apprentices, servants and the like. That tradition's gone here but the name remains.of all the holy books in the world, how can you prove that yours is THE holy book inspired by God alone?-I'd love to hear about that one too. I've had this out with JWs on my doorstep before now; they seemed pretty clueless about other religious books in general, even claiming that the Bible was older than the Vedas (not true). Why is the Bible truer than the Vedas, or the Tao Te Ching?

Lament for Boxing Day
2007-12-27 00:39:00 You don’t think about elves, or, if you do, you don’t think about us after the point where Santa loads all those toys up on the sleigh. Why bother? We’ve done our job.Even if you did think about it, you wouldn’t get past Christmas day. You can guess what that’s like. Unlike you, we do wait up for Santa. After he comes in and rubs down the reindeer (yeah, he does that himself; Santa’s that kind of guy) he opens the back of the sleigh, where he’s got a million kinds of cookies from all over the world. You didn’t think he ate all of them, did you? He’s supposed to be on a diet. Mrs. Claus looks the other way on Christmas, but cookies are like vegetables for elves. We eat most of them. Then we exchange gifts, all the elves and the Clauses and some of the reindeer and yeti, everyone that can fit into the shop. We eat more cookies and go to bed early. The sun doesn’t rise at the North Pole this time of year anyway. But what then, do you think? You haven’t even imagine...

Boxing Day Test Day 1: SA vs WI
2007-12-27 00:38:00 The two tests that started today had similar weather conditions leading up to the day. A Tiring Boxing Day
2007-12-26 14:27:00 Ever wonder why 26th December is called "Boxing Day"? I don't but in case someone knows, please share with us..lolzz..Anyway, the day started late, after 1pm actually. The luxury of no kids and hubby being self-employed. We took the car and went for lunch. We planned to renew hubby's motorbike's insurance and road tax after that but upon talking about it over lunch we decided to take the bike instead coz we needed to park the car very far from the insurance place and me no like that.So we head on home, grabbed motorbike's keys and helmet and off we went again. After getting the insurance, we rode on to JPJ to renew the bike's RM2.00 road tax (ah life is wonderful) and my driving licence. We reached JPJ around 3.30pm and would you believe they ran out of queue numbers to renew driving licence! Boy, was I pissed coz now I got to renew at the post office. However hubby got his road tax done and off we went to Al-Rajhi bank next to get a savings account done to transfer my paypal e...
Cricket or Yachting for Boxing Day?
2007-12-26 14:25:00 One of the great Ocean Races, the annual Sydney to Hobart, which always starts on Boxing Day is under way in perfect conditions. The winner for the last two years, Wild Oats XI leads the field and is favourite to win again, but weather conditions are likely to preclude a new record. The race includes a wide variety of yachts from the Super Maxi's which complete the trip in less than two days to smaller yachts which can take a week or more depending on weather conditions. There is an excellent web site where you can track the yachts, read updates and see some excellent photographs if you are nautically inclined. I know James is.Here in Australia, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race vies with the Boxing Day Cricket Test Match held annually in Melbourne as the major sporting events for this part of the year. For the record over 60,000 people and a huge television audience saw Matthew Hayden hit his 28th test century as India fought back to be marginally ahead after day one with Anil Kumble...

Happy Boxing Day!
2007-12-26 10:30:00 After 6 hours of intense cooking yesterday, I doubt I?ll cook on this scale for a long time to come. 16 stomachs left the Boyd residence happy. At least that?s what they tell me. We don?t have any pictures to show though. With the chaos and all in the kitchen, pictures were the last thing on our minds. What a waste don't you think?I hope you enjoyed Christmas. You know, Christmas is also about forgiving and making amends. Just thought I?ll say that?Somebody should tell Seetoh to NEVER EVER sing again on national television. He sounds absolutely horrible! Pui pui pui!!I?ve consumed way too much alcohol the last 3 days. It does feel like I?m still high. There are a few more pre-planned drinking sessions before 2007 runs out. It sure looks like we?re gonna booze at Vijay?s house on the 31st. What better way to bring in the new year than with close friends? My group and I are getting too old for the party scene. Right now, we prefer quiet places and cheap booze. Dunlop Street has some p...

Thou Shalt Not Pay Full Price - Boxing Days Sales!
2007-12-25 00:00:00 Yup that wonderful time of year is upon us again - sale time! We've put together a list of do's and don'ts to help you have a fun and enjoyable boxing day. And yes, we have included links for catalogues and sales info! To make the most out of boxing day sales, Never Shopped Out recommends… Do eat breakfast. Boxing Day shopping could seriously be classed as a workout in my book. Also don’t go for a huge walk to that cute little café you sometimes go to, its most likely not open and you don’t want to trek all that way and find that it’s shut. Stick to the major shopping areas. Don’t sleep in til Midday and head down the shops. You’ll spend forever fighting in the carpark (and don’t forget Chadstone is rebuilding part of their carpark so its already crazy there). Get up early and then have a nanna-nap in the afternoon. Do wear comfy shoes. Boxing Day is not the day to break in the those fabulous Manalo Bhlaniks. We also don&...
Best of: Boxing Day Last Year
2007-12-23 12:41:00 This was originally posted on Boxing Day last year, after I had returned from the “sales” this year promises to bring the same lack of enthusiasm: So this is the first boxing day I have spent in Ottawa in 20 years. I grew up in Montreal, and Boxing Day there was simple, all stores opened at noon and away you go (some had sales, etc.,), but I kept hearing about HUGE SALES and GREAT BARGAINS and people lined up for blocks and over $1.4B spent today alone (the second biggest day of buying in the year), all I can say is, Really? I went out this morning to get some milk and bought some storage containers at 1/2 price ($1.49, great buy). We went to Staples, Wal-Mart, and Indigo along with a grocery store, and it felt like a Sunday. Wal-Mart looked a little whacky, I must admit, but the craziest thing I saw was the RETURNs line! Why would you go to a store to return something on Boxing Day, unless you had no life and wanted to spend a long time in line? A lot of stores don&rs...
