2008-05-28 00:36:00 Umpires make mistakes, and that's no sin. But rejecting instant replay that could help baseball avoid costly gaffes, especially in October, is a far bigger error made by old-school fools, Gregg Doyel says.

What happens in our brains when we judge others
2008-05-19 13:45:00 Washington, May 19 (ANI): American neuroscientists are using a technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a type of brain scan that measures blood flow, to understand what happens in the brain when a person makes moral judgements, develops beliefs and understands languages. Rebecca Saxe, a neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has already identified an area of the brain (the temporoparietal junction) that lights up when people think about other people’s thoughts. “(That finding is) one of the most astonishing discoveries in the field of human cognitive neuroscience,” Science Daily quoted Nancy Kanwisher, the Ellen Swallow Richards Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT and Saxe’s PhD thesis adviser, as saying. “We already knew that some parts of the brain are involved in specific aspects of perception and motor control, but many doubted that an abstract high-level cognitive process like understa...

CONNECTING BRAINS TO ARTIFICIAL BRAIN
2008-04-26 08:26:00 Northwestern University researchers of washington have pioneered a technique called targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), which allows an artificial limb to respond directly to the brain’s signals, making it much easier to use than traditional motorized body parts. The technique, which is still under development, allows wearers to open and close their artificial hands and bend and straighten their artificial elbows nearly as naturally as their own arms.“The idea is that when you lose your arm, you lose the motors, the muscles and the structural elements of the bones. But the control information should still be there in the residual nerves,” said Dr Todd A Kuiken, a physiatrist at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and professor at Northwestern University. He conceived the idea of taking the residual nerves that once carried the commands from the brain to produce arm, wrist and hand movements, and of connecting them to the chest muscles so that the signals can be used to move...

Scientists take control of flies' brains to make females behave just like m
2008-04-22 18:11:00 weird factsScientists have been able to take control of flies' brains to make females behave just like males.Researchers genetically modified the insects so that a group of brain cells that control sexual behaviour could be "switched on" by a pulse of light. The team was able to get female fruit flies to produce a courtship song - behaviour usually only seen in males. The study, published in the journal Cell, suggests that the wiring in male and female flies' brains is similar.Scanning electron micrograph of the fruit fly (SPL)What would happen if we turned the neurons on in femalesGero MiesenboeckGero Miesenboeck, from Oxford University, UK, who carried out the research with J. Dylan Clyne from Yale University, US, said: "It is often the case that males have to work very hard to convince females to mate with them."In many animal species, males have to put on elaborate courtship displays to impress females - even the tiny fruit fly."Male fruit flies will vibrate one of their wings t...

Engineering Prof Builds Brains for Robotic Cars
2008-04-13 11:06:00 Jonathan Sprinkle wants to build robotic vehicles that pass the Turing Test. The test, proposed by Alan Turing in a 1950 paper, “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” requires a robot’s behavior to be so lifelike that an observer can't tell if he’s dealing with a robot or a person. Sprinkle, an assistant professor at The University of Arizona, and professor J. Mikael Eklund, of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, have already passed the Turing Test with a control system they designed for a T-33 jet trainer. A veteran F-15 pilot who flew against the T-33 in a test at Edwards Air Force Base said it looked like a recent flight school graduate was at the controls. Following his success with flight-based systems, Sprinkle has placed his robotic control expertise firmly on the ground, where he’s applying it to smart cars that drive themselves. This research effort began with a DARPA Urban Challenge project Sprinkle worked on at the University of California, Berk...

Eating meat led to smaller stomachs, bigger brains
2008-04-06 21:34:00 Behind glass cases, Harvard’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology displays ancient tools, weapons, clothing, and art — enough to jar you back into the past. But the venerable museum offered a jarring moment of another sort in its Geological Lecture Hall last month (March 20). Paleoanthropologist Leslie Aiello delivered a late-afternoon talk on diet, energy, and evolution. It was jolting to see her, slight and matronly, stand before a story-high screen filled with images of rugged early hominids on a savannah, gathered around fallen game. Then again, Aiello — as one of her admirers put it — is the “alpha female” among anthropologists who make a study of human origins. She co-wrote the widely used text “An Introduction to Human Evolutionary Anatomy” (Academic Press, 1990), based on the idea that the fossil record offers clues to how early hominids looked, moved, and even ate. Aiello — a professor for three decades at University College, London, and now president of t...

Why Computers are Not Brains
2008-03-24 03:27:00 10 Important Differences Between Brains and Computers is an article over at the Developing Intelligence blog written by Chris Chatham - an excellent list of reasons Computers != Brains. Not to say all of these reasons are hurdles that can never be overcome in the pursuit of artificial intelligence, it just points out many of the oversimplifications that popular culture makes in thinking that AI is just around the corner. It is a good read, but many of the points are arguable. For instance, I don’t agree with #10 -> Brain have bodies. This argument seems to have pop culture written all over it. Not that I am a robot hater, but I just can’t seem to get as excited about the prospects of mechanized AI until it is capable of vacuuming my house - and not a wimpy vacuuming like the Roomba - but something smart enough to do the stairs.

All The Brains Are Heading To Alberta
2008-03-05 04:01:00 New Statistics Canada figures show that along with tradespeople, there is a huge surge of post-secondary school graduates choosing Edmonton over trendy spots like Montreal and Vancouver. Why because smart people go where the money is!In Vancouver you can spend close to 70% of your income on housing, Montreal you can get a job but pay higher taxes than you would in Alberta.Or you could chose Alberta with the lowest taxes in Canada, highest salaries and enjoy quite good housing affordability. No wonder over 160,000 people have moved to Alberta over the last 7 years. With a higher quality of life and virtually limitless opportunities Alberta is where young smart professionals are choosing to make their home.

2008-03-03 22:44:00 And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation."Mark 8:12The Pharisee's were like "Prove it, Mr. Big Stuff". All he could do was shake it head, I mean look at the situation. Jesus was THERE WITH THEM and they were still blinded, hearts were still hardened. More signs weren't gonna change a thing.Where's the proof? That's the cry of the atheist. I can't see it so I don't believe it. I guess they've never read Hebrews, "...the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.", and all that. Like the Pharisee's, I believe the non-believer could be hit over the head with the most, well, miraculous miracle and still not believe. It comes from the heart and soul. The mind just gets in the way.Father, let my little bit of love be a light for those who are too smart for their own good. I used to be one of them.
