Not all travel brands have the knowledge, time or inclination to manage ...
Facebook Groups Updates On SMS – Will This Help Brands Engage More Wi
2009-09-19 06:39:00
The Groups pages on Facebook is such a popular way for brands to engage with their users; so much so that brands are actually willing to spend money to advertise their Facebook pages. Now after taking so much of an effort in amassing ‘fans’ to your brand, it wouldn’t make much sense if people were not to actively follow all that you are posting there, right? In an attempt to add more value for brands promoting their Facebook Group pages, Facebook had introduced the ‘Subscribe via SMS’ feature on its pages sometime back. This feature has recently been extended to users in India as well. Users may now subscribe to Facebook Groups via SMS from either the Group page or by sending an SMS, fan <page_name> to +91-9232232665 (92FACEBOOK). This can make terrific sense not just for the brands, but for Facebook as well. By opening up a new channel of communication with the users via SMS, Facebook can not only think of monetizing this medium (think 160by2 o...

More Good Than Bad About Brands On Social Media – EMarketer Report
2009-09-02 12:36:00
Social Media the buzz word of today is everywhere. Celebrities and brands alike are hoping onto the social media bandwagon in India. We have blogged about this before. But even though some brands may complain that Social media is a bitching platform where brands are pulled down by consumers and there have been many well publicized cases of the same as well recently. What is then surprising to is that a survey by emarketer states that more good is being said about a brand than bad.. Check the chart below: Although the above chart showcases a US market scenario its still an insight given the penetration of social media in that market. One has to also keep in mind though that social media marketing is quite evolved in the US compared to that in India. India has its bunch of brand rating and review sites in mouthshut and brandadda and also has seen the rise of twitter lately with a lot of brands and brand related conversations increasing. I feel the above statistic should if at all giv...

China: No Brands No Cry. What Does Peoria Say?
2009-08-22 08:22:00
Since my using references to Bob Marley songs seems to play so well (see here and here)..... Anyway, just read an excellent and blunt blog post on Chinese brands over at the perpetually insightful Silicon Hutong Blog, entitled, "Brand Reality Check." The post uses a Tom Doctoroff article in AdAge (subscription required) as the starting point for arguing China will "not be producing a bevy of global brands at any time in the near future." I completely agree. Silicon Hutong convincingly makes the following argument against those those who might list the few fairly well known Chinese companies as proof that China can develop great brands: Those who disagree with Tom (and manage to eschew ad hominem attacks) point out that Haier has managed to build a global brand entirely without marketing. While that point would be debatable (if you could buy a Siemens fridge for the same price as a Haier fridge, which would YOU buy, and why?), let's not go there. Instead, let us grant fo...
Facebook Wall Posts by Brands Can Have CTRs as High as 6.5%
2009-08-14 05:36:00
No matter how much we go beyond CPM and other existing metrics to bring newer measures in this social web, CTRs won’t be buried away anytime soon. It might not be critical, however, the web made out of billions of hyperlinks essentially works on clicks, and therefore it forms an important metric. Now according to a report by a social media metrics startup,  Facebook can provide CTRs as high as 6.49% through wall posts. The system however as accepted by Virtue (the startup) isn’t perfect and the methodology though sound is still based on a few assumptions. The Click throughs measured were for URLs posted into users newsfeed and wall posts by brands on through their Fan pages. (Source- Adage) The assumptions here to arrive at a figure are two fold. For one the number of fans a page has is not an indication to measure the CTR because all fans might not be online at a given time and that vastly reduces the target base. Virtue assumes that a twelfth of the user base is always...

While each hotel chain interacts differently with their following, here are the TOP TEN I think are doing the best job in providing customer service, building brand loyalty and engaging their followers with suite tweets.

GM-New-Brands-The-Saturn-Proposal
2009-06-06 05:23:00
Detroit -- General Motors Corp. and Penske Automotive Group today confirmed details of a proposed transaction under which Penske would acquire the Saturn brand. If completed, the deal would save more than 350 dealerships and 13,000 jobs at Saturn and its retailers in the United States, and would preserve the customer-focused Saturn brand. The proposed transaction is part of GM’s rebuilding efforts outlined in the viability plan that was submitted to the U.S. government earlier this year. Under the terms in the memorandum of understanding, Penske would obtain the rights to the brand as well as certain other Saturn assets. GM would continue production, on a contract basis, of the Saturn Aura, Vue and Outlook. Its like GM starting over again. The government own 60% of the company. Are Brands Sowing Seeds of Social Media Distraction The Way They Use Social
2009-05-13 15:49:00
There is an interesting discussion on Search Engine Land about whether marketing is killing social media. Essentially the post is about social media being used by marketers to target people might alienate those very people whom they are targeting. What is certain is that all the major social network sites are struggling to find serious business models and will have to do something about this at some point. And until they do they’ll need to hang-on to the users that they have, even if some think they can’t afford to take on any more. And that’s why it will be so important for them not to allow their current users to be alienated by bad marketing & spam. Now this is been something on my mind since somewhile. Here at WATBlog we often talk about a lot of brands coming on board social media, and I genuinely have felt happy about the acceptance. That’s because I believe in social media, and the power of conversations and their influence. However, when I end up seeing peo...

Should General Motors keep several models including the G8 from brands bein
2009-04-28 23:43:00
With General Motors announcing that they are accelerating there revised Viability Plan which will focus on four core brands in the U.S. - Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC - with fewer nameplates and a more competitive level of marketing support per brand. At the same time will moves up the resolution of Saab, Saturn, and Hummer to the end of 2009 and phase out the Pontiac brand by 2010.This not only got me thinking, but has a number of people thinking about what is going to happen to some of these vehicles under the phased out brands. For example, you have Hummer, Saab, Saturn and now the phased out by 2010 Pontiac, but the problem is while GM doesn’t need even four brands, they need two or three max they do need some well selling vehicles under those few brands. Pontiac has the G8 and the Solstice, Saturn has the Aura and Vue including the hybrid and I would be surprised if they didn’t save one Hummer, either the H2 or the H3, but as a diesel power plant. One suggestion from t...

Luxury Brands on the Web
2009-04-03 05:18:00
Historically, the idea of selling luxury items on the web has been a difficult proposition. Intrinsic with “luxury” shopping is the experience of walking into a well-appointed shop and being waited upon by knowledgeable, experienced associates. As this recent U.S. News article details, brands have had a difficult time translating that into an online experience. After all, even the most creative or cutting edge website cannot capture the feeling of walking into a Hermes store or a Porsche dealership. On the other hand, people are spending an increasing percentage of their time and money online, making for a poor business decision to ignore the web and its potential. Luxury brands should embrace the internet and what it does best - connecting people and sharing information – as they formulate interactive marketing strategies and develop websites. One of the best aspects of the web as a marketing tool is the ease with which communication can spread, generating ...

Green Brands study 2008 launched in Monterey
2008-06-04 09:25:00
On the first day of SB 2008, my colleague Annie Longsworth and Russ Meyer from our WPP sister company, Landor, unveiled our Green Brands study 2008, examining consumer perceptions of environmental issues and companies in both the UK and the USA. The findings are remarkably similar. In both countries, it’s body care companies and supermarkets who are really capturing the imagination of the public with their environmental initiatives, such as Marks & Spencer’s ‘Plan A’. The Guardian has picked up on the supermarket angle in its report on our study: High-profile green advertising campaigns by supermarkets appear to be paying off with five of the country’s biggest grocers coming out top in a survey of the most environmentally friendly brands. Campaigns to discourage plastic bag use and an emphasis on less packaging helped Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda take five of the top six places in a survey of 1,500 people. What st...

VW CEO threatens to quit if Porsche interferes with Audi, other brands
2008-06-03 05:05:00
VW CEO threatens to quit if Porsche interferes with Audi, other brands Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn is reportedly threatening to resign if Porsche attempts to influence the direction of any of its premium brands. Porsche's growing stake in Volkswagen — currently 31 percent but expected to reach 50 percent — is causing concern at VW's various subsidiaries, including Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Bugatti. While Porsche has been blocked, at least for now, from buying more than 50 percent of VW, many insiders feel a conflict of interest threatens the future of all four brands. According to Germany's Der Spiegel, Audi executives fear their company will be the first affected by Porsche's newfound power. Audi, which builds the R8 and TT sports cars, is viewed as a competitor to Porsche. Likewise, Lamborghini is a clear rival and Bentley and Bugatti also compete in similar segments. Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking has previously stated he thinks Bu...

Lola turns back the clock to recreate history at Brands Hatch

Click on the picture to enlarge Visit the Lola sportscars pictures gallery. To help mark Lola Car?s golden anniversary, an important part of the marque?s history was recreated at Brands Hatch on Saturday 24 March 2008, when the first Lola ever produced lapped the Brands Hatch Indy circuit in under 60 seconds to emulate the feat first set 50 years ago. On a Bank Holiday weekend in 1958, Eric Broadley took his homemade Lola Mk1 around the Kent circuit in just under a minute and in so doing he made it the first sportscar to break the 60 second barrier at Brands Hatch. On the same day, half a century ago, the ambitious and budding engineer also went on to win a heat of the Rochester Trophy. 50 years on at the Masters Historic Festival, Lola organised for respected historic preparation expert Rick Hall to drive the very same car and emulate the sub one minute lap. Hall set a best time of 59.452s - his fastest lap of the day. After completing the historic laps, Rick Hall said: It ...
