Surging Braves win, 5 out of wild card (AP)

Puffing away on a cigar, Braves manager Bobby Cox eased back in a chair with one leg resting on his desk. He peered up at the television to watch an out-of-town game with postseason implications, San Francisco at Arizona. "We're doing everything we can. We need somebody else to lose once in a while," Cox said.

As the first half of the season winds down, things are suddenly looking a whole lot rosier. Yes, Mike Fontenot and his .230 BA is still at 2B. Yes, our bullpen is still. . . . a bit untrustworthy. Yes, we just lost Dempster for a month (that one really hurts). Yes, Kevin Hart is back on the team. But all that aside, the Cubs are (relatively healthy) and have won 6 of their last 8 and are only two games back of the evil Southern Beer Team....

Fun fact: More Braves fans voted for John Rocker in 2008 than Barack Obama Tonight the Cubs welcome into Wrigley one of the few remaining teams in professional sports that not only allows overt racism but embraces and celebrates it. Considering this, it might be a good idea to leave Milty out of the lineup. No matter though. Tonight we hope to reap the bounty of the return of Aramis Ramirez, REEDZ Johnson, and Angel Guzman. Game Notes For Monday Night vs. Braves

* Atlanta won five straight from June 28-July 3, but dropped two consecutive 5-3 decisions to the Nats in Washington on Saturday and Sunday. The Braves are now just 3-8 in their last 11 road contests overall.* The Cubs beat the Brewers, 8-2, on Sunday to take three of four from Milwaukee over the long weekend and are now 7-1 in their last eight games at Wrigley Field.* The Braves took two of three from the Cubs last month in Atlanta, but Chicago has beaten Atlanta four straight times at home by a combined score of 30-10. The Cubs have homered in six straight home games vs. the Braves (11 HR during streak).* Brian McCann (reserve) was the lone Braves'...

Load up the car, Maw! The Cubs are in town! The Cubs are headed into Atlanta for a makeup game before taking off for tomorrow's game in Detroit. There's so much to love about Atlanta: the improvements in dental hygiene (the recent trend in gold teeth notwithstanding), the food, the shopping, the institutions of higher education, the requirements that shoes should now be worn in public establishments. And you know what? Atlanta is a BEAUTIFUL city. It really upsets me that people still treat the people of Atlanta like a bunch of racist, uneducated hicks. I mean, that was a LONG TIME AGO, people! Atlanta has grown and changed! It's a modern city! These aren't the old days, when...

Memo to Braves: Keep throwing at this guy, and there's going to be a problem. A big one. If you read the comments on Carl's headlines today, King Sori is almost telling the pitchers what's going to happen. I don't care if he posed yesterday. Know what you should have done? Thrown a better f***ing pitch and not suck so bad. This team is itching for a fight. Hadn't had one all year, where last season they were coming in bunches, whether it was between each other or against another team. So, keep throwing inside. Who's over there? Yunel Escobar? Couldn't hurt a fly. Just wait until Crazy Eyez Killa Zambrano comes after you with his belt off. Onto the game. Ted Lilly, even though he lika-to-give-up-the-home-run-ba-ll, has pitched well of late. In seven of his last eight starts, Lilly has allowed three runs or less. For the Braves, it's the ancient Tom Glavine. This is Glavine's first start since June. He's had a bum elbow and was on the DL, then in the minors. Interestingly ...

It was a snoozefest in the first game, but the best kind with a solid Cubs victory. If you didn't get to watch it, here's what you missed in 10 parts: 1. The Braves are terrible 2. Edmonds was the man yet again 3. Bobby Cox got thrown out for arguing about lights 4. Soto hit a bomb 5. My man Soriano almost got nailed by something named Francisley Bueno 6. Francisley Bueno almost had to die 7. Crappo Marquis smoked and mirrored his way to above .500, luckily again he was going against a terrible pitcher and team that has flat-out given up 8. Dome needs some time off...and soon 9. Howry pitched an inning and didn't give up any runs. There were then rumors about a trumpet sounding and a bearded man riding a horse down from the clouds 10. Did I mention the Braves are terrible? Onto the nightcap... Ultimo Rich Harden, who was supposed to start last night's game, will go up against Jorge Campillo, who hasn't been half bad for the Braves this season. He's currently on a four-game wi...

Yeah, yeah, I know. Unoriginal. But how many times do I get to use Mr. Cub in a game thread? If you don't like it, go to China and take the underage gymnasts with you. So, after last night's deluge (which made me very happy I didn't make the four-hour trek down I-85), the Cubs and Braves are scheduled for a day-night doubleheader. There is a small switch however. Contrary to the sidebar, it's going to be Crappo Marquis against Charlie Morton in the day game, and then Rich Harden and Jorge Campillo tonight. Not sure when this was all changed, but I just found out. Marquis improved to 7-7, merely because the Cubs threw up a milli runs last time out. Once again, he's facing a pitcher worse than he in Morton, but the Cubs have had trouble in the past with first-time young pitchers. Game today is on WGN, and then tonight's is on Comcast (or Fox Sports South for us in the Bible Belt-yay!). I'll have another thread up for the nightcap as sort of a recap/new thread. Here's to anoth...

Rich Harden goes for the Cubs tonight We came through two weeks of division play with a little wiggle room at the top of the division. The Cubs got more good news this week, as everyone's favorite member of the Northern Beer Team, Ryan Braun, has had to sit out a couple of games with back issues. Keep up the good work with the voodoo dolls, kids, it seems to be working. We last faced, and swept, the Braves at Wrigley in mid-June. Clearly, these are not your big broher's braves, as, for once, they aren't really in playoff contention at 55-63, though they have some momentum coming off their first winning road trip of the season. Rich Harden (and his 2.10 ERA) makes his 6th start for the Cubs tonight, which, to be honest, is WAY more starts than I thought he'd have at this point, given his injury history. Facing Harden will be some kid named Charlie Morton, who sounds like a used car salesman and has never faced the Cubs. Tonight also marks the beginning of the LOHO Fukudome drink...

There are several Mariners whose names are going to pop up in trade rumors over the coarse of July, but Raul Ibanez is, in my opinion, one of the guys that will undoubtedly be wearing another team’s colors in August.  He’s still an RBI machine and is much more affordable compared to other potential rent-a-players. It looks like we have a swell game on our hands today.  Chicago's National League Baseball Club will be hosting that great team from the East, the Boston Braves.   Today's baseball flashback comes to you courtesy of 60 years of Cubs baseball on WGN tv.  No offense to the nice people at WGN, but you could have picked a better year.  In 1948 the Braves went 91-62 and finished 1st in the NL.  The Cubs?  Yeah, it was one of those years, 64-90 and dead last. On the mound for Chicago is Big Z, who at 8-2 has the same record as last night's winner Dempster (crazy isn't it?)  Now you know that's just got to aggravate Zambrano, so he better step up today.  Of course not having a meltdown in the dugout would also be good.   On the other side is Time Hudson.  At 7-4 with a 2.86 ERA it looks like Hudson might actually give the Braves a chance.  But he walks a lot of batters, and after 2 nights in a row of being used in the 4th gett...

(Disclaimer: Mark and doc blume, don't read this diary) So I know it's not good to say so, but I'm feeling pretty good about our little group these days. Soriano? Infuriating, but I can live with the HRs. Fukudome? Taught our entire team patience at the plate. Suck on that, Gerald Perry. Lee? The view from the rear makes up for a lot. Kerry? Badass. Soto? Badass. Marmol? Badass. I don't even want to kill Theriot at this point in time. See where I'm going with this? Tonight Chipper and his .420 average leads the Braves into Wrigley to take on our boys in blue. While on the one hand, I'm kind of cheering for someone to hit .400 again, I'm not really sure I want that person to be "Chipper" Jones. What kind of grown man allows people to call him "Chipper?" Wrong, wrong, wrong. I can't respect that. Despite the fact that the Braves have the reincarnation of Ted Williams, or at least his head, in their lineup, the team is only at .500 for the year. Unfortunately for us, Tom Glavi...
