It looks like we have a swell game on our hands today.  Chicago's National League Baseball Club will be hosting that great team from the East, the Boston Braves.   Today's baseball flashback comes to you courtesy of 60 years of Cubs baseball on WGN tv.  No offense to the nice people at WGN, but you could have picked a better year.  In 1948 the Braves went 91-62 and finished 1st in the NL.  The Cubs?  Yeah, it was one of those years, 64-90 and dead last. On the mound for Chicago is Big Z, who at 8-2 has the same record as last night's winner Dempster (crazy isn't it?)  Now you know that's just got to aggravate Zambrano, so he better step up today.  Of course not having a meltdown in the dugout would also be good.   On the other side is Time Hudson.  At 7-4 with a 2.86 ERA it looks like Hudson might actually give the Braves a chance.  But he walks a lot of batters, and after 2 nights in a row of being used in the 4th gett...

32 year-old righty Brian Lawrence made six starts for the Mets last year and 16 in Triple A.  He'd missed all of '06 due to rotator cuff and labrum surgery.  Before that, he'd been a useful innings eater. This year Lawrence found himself playing independent ball for the Camden Riversharks playing alongside familiar names such as Ryan Drese and Jamal Strong.  He posted a 3.21 ERA in eight starts.  Today, the Braves purchased Lawrence's contract and assigned him to Triple A.

Chipper Jones called news of John Smoltz's pending surgery "devastating" while Brian McCann said he felt the right-hander would pitch again according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution."Coming into this season, I said if there's one guy on the club we couldn't do without, it's John Smoltz," said Jones. While Greg Maddux is not out of the question, the Braves are more interested in a younger starter they can control for multiple years. One possibly available starter who hasn't gotten much buzz: Nate Robertson.  The 30 year-old southpaw hasn't pitched well since '06, and he's signed through 2010. The Mariners will probably talk about Miguel Batista and Jarrod Washburn, but not Erik Bedard.  No big surprise there.  Both Batista and Washburn are signed through '09. Stark rattles off a bunch of available relievers.  Mostly names you'd expect, but click through and take a look.
