Iran Uses P2P Program To Breach US Security And Steal Blueprints To Obamas
2009-03-01 22:39:00
Makes one wonder how often this type of thing happens.According to WPXI, a Pennsylvania company has uncovered a security breach involving the President's Marine One helicopters, a P2P file-sharing program, and an IP address in Tehran, the capital of Iran.Although President Obama and other high-ranking American government officials have access to a fleet of high-tech and security-enhanced helicopters, the term "Marine One" is used to refer specifically to the helicopter in which the President currently is flying. The technical specifications for all of the helicopters in the fleet are highly classified, and any security breach, particularly to a hostile foreign power, is naturally of great concern. The fact that it is happening through simple file-sharing programs, which most people seem to think are just for the "harmless" sharing of music and video files, is even more alarming.Bob Boback, CEO of Tiversa, the company who discovered the breach, explains, "We found a file containing e...

The Federal Breach Of Trust
2008-05-12 03:03:00
The People of this country formed a social compact; that compact was contained and detailed within the written Constitution giving the exact extent of powers they deemed necessary to the government. As you note, these were powers that were delegated to the government by the People, not relinquished. There has never been a single power relinquished by the People, any power within the function of the government is isolated through the action of Delegated Trust based upon the Sovereignty of the People. This was to ensure that the People themselves enjoyed a very qualified Liberty of Action, Freedom from unnecessary restraints, unnecessary requisitions or extractions from the government. Of those limitations, the People in their Sovereignty gave their limited Consent to the government to function within a very, very narrow frame of action primarily for the sole purpose of the defense of the Liberty and the Rights for which they formed the government in the first place.Any measures incons...

Copyright breach: Clients of Virtual Map switch providers  - SIngapore Ban on firm from using govt-owned material also applies to its customers By Chua Hian Hou  LOOKING FOR DIRECTIONS: Users of streetdirectory.com can no longer access Virtual Map’s online maps. Instead, they are greeted by a tongue-in-cheek notice saying the maps ‘have escaped out the window’. — MUGILAN RAJASEGERAN   COMPANIES still using Virtual Map’s online maps on their websites are starting to look for alternative providers. This is because a court order banning Virtual Map from using copyrighted material owned by the Government also applies to the maps it supplies to customers. While Virtual Map did not say how many of these have switched map providers, there are signs that some are deserting it. Yellow Pages’ website, for instance, switched its map provider just two weeks ago, said the directory service’s marketing communications manager, Ms Sharon Liew. Meanwhile,...

2008-04-22 09:42:00
This week is a rare pause in a fairly comprehensive schedule of multilateral disarmament meetings that stretches until June. We've reported on the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons' (CCW) work earlier this month, and last week and this week there were regional events on cluster munitions in Mexico City and Bangkok. While all of this was going on, the second five-yearly review meeting of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) met in The Hague. With the mainly bilateral focus of other diplomatic activity there, those involved in the CWC - not least on the civil society side - sometimes find the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) a bit of a lonely outpost compared with the multilateral hothouse atmospheres in Geneva, New York and even Vienna. In his very useful daily reports on the CWC review conference, researcher Richard Guthrie had this to say:"The Hague remains less NGO-friendly than Geneva, New York or Vienna. A major part of this derives from...
Obama Campaign: Sen. Clinton?s Remarks On Bosnia Were A Breach Of Honor
2008-04-19 22:07:00
With approximately 10 minutes notice to reporters, the Obama campaign held a conference call today with Pennysylvania Bosnia veterans to discuss Sen. Clinton’s previous remarks on Bosnia.  The timing of the call is somewhat odd, especially in light of Sen. Obama’s statements regarding political distractions at ABC’s debate earlier this week. Maj. Gen. Walter Stewart observed: “Imagine ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Obama Campaign: Sen. 2008-04-16 02:08:00
By now we are all aware of the sad saga of Tesla Motors and their quest for a reliable two-speed transmission for the battery powered Roadster. After failing to get the necessary durability from the original gearbox supplied by X-Trac, Tesla turned to Magna to try and create a new unit. That obviously didn't work out any better, so they tried to design their own before giving up and revising the motor instead and going to a single speed transmission. Unfortunately Magna apparently didn't take the break-up well and has now resorted to courts for redress. According to Magna Powertrain's suit against Tesla, they didn't get the money they were owed for the design and development work they did. Interestingly, Magna is claiming that they suggested to Tesla as far back as September 2006 that they should go with a single speed unit, but that path wasn't followed at the time. The suit claims that Tesla had Magna stop work in October 2007 and the Canadian company isn't taking issue with...

BlueCross BlueShield is certainly having a busy 2008.  And it?s just the beginning of the year!  A CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield dental HMO, The Dental Network, has announced that the private information, of mostly Maryland and D.C. residents, has been available on the internet for a period of two weeks.  The accident may have affected approximately 75,000 people by exposing names, addresses, and dates of birth.  Incidents like these are nothing new, and will continue to happen due to human error: move or save the contents of a sensitive file to the wrong computer directory (aka, document folder), and all of a sudden it can be found on the internet.  The principle is not unlike that of P2P software, if you?re familiar with such applications.  Most P2P software gives you exact control on which folders are available for sharing.  Share the wrong folder, and all the files in that directory can be accessed by anyone.  Likewise, a website is comp...
Presidential passport breach: Why do contractors have easy access to sensit
2008-03-23 19:25:00
The accessing of private passport-based travel data of all three Presidential candidates by contractors working for the State Department has finally galvanized Capitol Hill to address the issue of privacy–something we’ve been begging them to do for years. Ron Wyden sums it up succinctly: “The Government Accountability Office has been warning about this problem for a decade. And it seems to me in this administration, there’s been pretty much a culture of disregard for privacy, and that’s part of the problem,” he said. Wyden may have been referring to a 2006 report from the GAO documenting the lack of oversight in sharing Social Security Numbers with contractors working for various federal agencies, including the IRS and the FBI, as well as within the private sector. It is but one of many reports the investigative agency has issued documenting the serious vulnerabilities our government’s mad drive to outsource its functions to the private sect...

Breaking News: 2 Fired Over Obama Passport File Breach

Barack Obama "without a need to do so," State Department officials confirmed to NBC News. The three people who had access to Obama's passport records were contract employees of the department's Bureau of Consular Affairs, NBC News has learned. The unauthorized activity concerning Obama's passport information occurred in January. "When the monitoring system is tripped, we immediately seek an explanation for the records access. If the explanation is not satisfactory, the supervisor is notified."Explaining why the contractors had access to the files, the official said: "The State Department...

Insurance Company Suffers Data Breach. Considering The Use Of Device Encry
2008-03-19 06:36:00
Starling Insurance and Associates, a Colorado?based company, is notifying their customers that their personal data may be compromised, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, drivers license numbers, account information, and names.  The data breach appears to have occurred earlier this month, and those affected were notified beginning March 5.   A letter to the Attorney General of New Hampshire shows that the data breach was caused by the theft of a server from a locked office, and while the computer in question had password?protection (a misnomer, in such cases), there was no encryption in place to protect the data.  Currently, it appears that the company has no idea how the data breach came to be, or what kind of information was actually lost, as they are in the process of reconstituting the information from backups.  However, they?re pretty sure that some or all of the information listed above are included in the lost server.  What more could ...

2008-03-19 06:27:00
Hannaford supermarkets has been alerting their customers that there has been a data breach of credit card and debit card numbers.  The statement that they?ve released made an emphatic point to let the public know that the information breach concerns those numbers alone, and does not extend to other personal information such as names and addresses, which Hannaford does not collect.  And good for them, too: personal data collection and retention was one of the root problems following the TJX data breach a little over a year ago.   Hannaford has also pointed out that they?re using the latest encryption protocols which are in compliance with PCI.  In fact, they were certified as PCI compliant last year and recertified just this past February.  However, 4.2 million credit card and debit card numbers were exposed in a breach that lasted four months from December 7 to March 10.  About 1800 cases of fraud have been linked to the breach.  Law enforcement a...
