Breaking the Silence - Children's stories of domestic violence! PBS
2008-06-18 12:24:00 I finally found it. Its a video I had heard about on PBS, and it speaks about the children of domestic violence. I realize domestic violence is a strong term for alot of people, but if you see this documentary you will realize that signs of verbal abuse, and signs of emotional abuse are always present. Its portion of domestic violence that people don't wish to acknowledge. There have been alot of critics of 'Breaking the Silence - Children's Stories of Domestic Violence'. The parents that lost custody do speak of course, but the children are speaking just as loud. The children that grew up, and were able to see things clearer now. They also see the emotional child abuse, and the verbal child abuse that was used towards them. It talks to the children that were ripped from the parents that cared for them, and how the system at times can work against them. It has children that have finally escaped, and NOT just their parents that wanted custody of them. It shows how backw...
Breaking the Silence.
2008-05-06 09:44:00 So, recently I have begun to talk to strangers. This is something that my Mom has done throughout my entire existence. It is possible for her to start a conversation with anyone, no matter when or where, the “gift of gab” is apparent. Throughout much of my childhood I had seen this ...
Breaking the Silence - Israeli Soldiers Speak
2008-04-25 10:59:00 by Stephen Lendman They're called "Refuseniks" but not for refusing to serve. They've done it proudly and courageously, and here's how "Courage to Refuse" members state their position: "We, reserve officers and soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)....have always served in the front lines....were first to carry out any mission, light or heavy, (and we did it) to protect the State of Israel and strengthen it. We....served....long weeks every year, in spite of dear cost to our personal lives, have been on reserve duty all over the Occupied Territories, and were issued commands and directives that had nothing to do with the security of our country (but were only given to perpetuate) our control over the Palestinian people. We('ve)....seen the bloody toll this Occupation exacts from both sides. ....the commands issued to us in the Territories (have) destroy(ed) all the values (we learned) growing up in this country. ....the (way) the Occupation ...

Breaking The Silence
2008-02-15 12:39:00 Perhaps some of you are thinking that after starting the ball rolling on a rather loud debate on the prosperity gospel, judging, discernment, motives, etc, I’m really ’smart’ to keep away and just let things roll while not saying a word. The fact of the matter is that I didn’t want to respond to every comment ...

2007-12-08 05:53:00 Sorry we haven’t been writing lately. It’s been lots of 7AM to 10PM days and just a short time at home. We didn’t do a good job ahead of time estimating how long we’d have to work on different tasks around both homes. A quick update - we’ve been robbed! Our new house was robbed and ...

Breaking the Silence? On Larry Craig.
2007-08-28 20:31:00 (image: thehague) So I’ve been on hiatus for a while… Sorry about that. But I couldn’t resist chiming in a scandal the size of Larry Craig’s. It’s sad really, not only for Craig’s family who like a famous recent governor of mine has probably ruined his credibility forever, but for the Republican Party in general. Why? ...

Keiye Miranda-Tuazon's Breaking the Silence @ blanc
2007-07-10 17:44:00 Keiye Miranda-Tuazon's"Breaking the Silence" at blancJuly 14 6pm - August 4BREAKING THE SILENCEMy works are either familiar or unique underwaterimages of people and objects that float, weave throughor swim around. It deals on personal space, time, memory, thoughts and experiences. The images suggesta sense of movement as the light reflecting on thewater attempts to recapture the original and existingform. This enables one to trace or transcend themovement of thought and explore, for instance, thedimension of solace and solitude. The entire paintingis an illusion of color: the play of light imbuing onthe works implies the fluidity, changing views anddimensions of water. The moving/flowing water serves an element ofdefamiliarization, producing an intriguing ambiguityof the real and unreal, thus, setting new terms ofencountering reality. The stark images and figurescreate a complex and resonating pattern, like bathingin a luminous glow of water. Rolled by water's movingreflection, the ...
Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence
2007-05-29 20:41:00 Breaking the Silence on Domestic ViolenceTough new laws are one way to reduce domestic violence and sexual assaults. Nothing sends a clearer message to a wife-beater -- Department of Justice statistics confirm that women are battered far more than men -- than prosecuting and jailing other wife-beaters. New laws, however, are not the only answer.Too many people continue to believe that domestic violence is a private matter between a couple, rather than a criminal offense that merits a strong and swift response. Even today, the victim of a domestic assault runs the risk of being asked, "What did you do to make your husband angry?" This questions implies the victim is to blame for this abuse. People in our criminal justice system -- police, prosecutors, judges, and jurors -- need to be educated about the role they can play in curbing acts of domestic violence.Even when cases are brought, domestic crimes are difficult to prosecute. All too often victims are so terrorized that they fear ...

Breaking the silence on torture in Egypt
2007-04-04 00:06:00 Osama Hussein Nasr, known as Abu Omar, is an Islamic preacher who was kidnapped by the CIA in 2003. He was ?rendered? to Egypt where he suffered brutal torture. Abu Omar broke the silence imposed on him by the Egyptian state to expose the torture. He told the anti-torture forum at the Cairo conference, ?I was severely tortured by the mukhabarrat (secret police) and state security. ?I was electrocuted for months, till my whole body turned black,? The Alexandrian cleric was kidnapped in Milan, Italy, and sent to Egypt where he was tortured. He was one of the many ?ghost prisoners? who were shunted between secret US prisons in private jets. Abu Omar expressed fears of re-arrest by the Egyptian police for speaking to the media, but insisted he will keep on talking. He said, ?If I stay silent, this torture will continue.? Ibrahim el-Houdaiby, a blogger and Muslim Brotherhood activist, appealed for international solidarity for the prisoners of Mubarak?s regime. He said, ?We have...

Breaking the Silence
2007-03-09 17:08:00 South Jersey native's true tale of abuse inspires powerful showBy Allegra Tiverativer@sjnewsco.comLisa Regina will never forget that afternoon in early April 2005 when a New York City ambulance delivered her to the emergency room at Beth Israel Hospital, where she was treated for injuries resulting from an attack by a violent man. This was no random act, however, and the assailant was no stranger. The man was Regina's boyfriend, and that day she became a victim of domestic violence -- the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 across the United States.Fear has long silenced many of these victims, mostly women but sometimes men, who suffer alone, feeling alienated and embarrassed by the trauma they've experienced. But Regina is giving the victims of domestic violence a voice -- a loud one.Staff photo by Tim HawkSouth Jersey native Lisa Regina, right, claps with the Voices of Mount Pisgah choir, during a rehearsal for "A Write to Heal."
