Switch regulates breast cancer response
2008-05-09 05:06:00 A tiny modification called methylation on estrogen receptors prolongs the life of these growth-driving molecules in breast cancer cells, as per research by researchers at Emory University's Winship Cancer Institute. The results are reported in the May 9, 2008 issue of the journal Molecular Cell. Most breast cancers contain estrogen receptors, which enable them to grow in the presence of the hormone estrogen. Their presence can determine whether tumors will respond to the estrogen-blocking drug tamoxifen........

Support Breast Cancer Research
2008-05-02 19:09:00 Breast cancer is a family disease. I experienced this first hand when I lost my mother to breast and cervical cancer when I was 16 years old. Her death knocked me off my feet and in some ways I am still dealing with that loss today. Most of you know me as an actor on television, but I think the most important role I play is that of breast cancer activist. As we approach Mother's Day, I am reminded of the pain and the uncertainty of this disease and how the loss of our mother affected me and my sisters. I am also reminded of what a remarkable woman my mother was. I cannot think of a better way to honor her than by working toward a world without breast cancer. Legislation has been introduced in Congress for a Mother's Day commemorative coin. A portion of the proceeds from this coin will benefit breast cancer research. Will you join me in the fight against breast cancer by letting Congress know how important this issue is to you?In the United States, one woman will be diagnosed with br...

Prevent Breast Cancer
2008-04-29 07:01:00 I've been floating around the net and I found this book. This is one of the growing number of books that say the Doctors way - to eliminate cancer after it starts causes more fear in most people than the thought of dying crom the cancer. A growing number of people are actually choosing to let the disease take them instead of enduring the 'cure' - which might not work. I like the message of this book 'people get sick by not taking care of themselves.' It is a powerful one that is being echoed through the medical community.Life Just Keep Getting Better And Better

BREAST CANCER
2008-04-27 09:29:00 Cancer of the breast is the leading cancer among women in Western countries. It appears that this cancer is caused by one of several viruses and is increased in certain population groups. As mentioned before women who breast-feed their babies seem to be protected. Those with fibrocystic disease, a condition where the mammary glands enlarge and become engorged with sacs of fluid have an increased risk of breast malignancy.Recent evidence points to the intake of caffeinated beverages, such as coffee, tea, and colas as factors in the production of this fibrocystic change. Beverage alcohol is believed to be one major risk factor in breast cancer. Men may also have breast cancer, but it is about 1/125th as common. Periodic self examination is an excellent aid to early detection of breast cancer, especially if it remains the same throughout the menstrual cycle.A great deal of controversy is raging in the medical world concerning the best treatment for breast cancer. Some types seem to be ...

Protect Breast Cancer Survivors From Discrimination
2008-04-21 00:33:00 Did you know that there is a genetic test that can help people find out if their family history of breast cancer may be due to a genetic mutation?Unfortunately, if you are tested - and your results are positive - there are very few federal protections preventing insurance companies from denying you coverage due to your genetic condition. This has led many to forgo testing, denying them important information that could help them manage their health and the health of their families. But there is something we can do to change this! The Senate is debating a bill called the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), which would make it illegal to discriminate based on genetic information.Click here to urge your Senator to support fair access to preventative treatments!Preventing these protections could cost lives - lives of real people like Bridget Mooney.Bridget Mooney graduated in 2005 with a degree in International Relations from Boston University. Genome analysis reveals new protein associated with breast cancer progressi
2008-04-20 12:24:00 A novel systems-based approach that combines comprehensive gene expression profiling with genome-wide transcription factor analysis and protein-protein interaction has led researchers to an important genetic marker that can help physicians know which breast cancer patients are at highest risk and will require more aggressive treatment, a research team based at the University of Chicago Medical Center reports in the April 15, 2008, issue of the journal Molecular Systems Biology. The researchers found that high expression of a protein known as H2A.Z, which is associated with the expression of genes within the nucleus, can help physicians predict which patients are most at risk for disease spread and death. It could also serve as a new target for therapy. ?Elevated H2A.Z expression is significantly associated with metastasis and shorter survival, and it could quickly help doctors make better predictions and treatment choices for their patients,? said study director Kevin White, PhD, ...

lapatinib shrinks breast cancer tumors in6 weeks
2008-04-17 12:01:00 A drug that targets the cell surface receptors that play an important role in many types of cancer can bring about significant tumour regression in breast cancer after only six weeks of use, a scientist told the 6th European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC-6). Dr. Angel Rodriguez, from the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA, said that the work demonstrated for the first time that the tyrosine kinase inhibitor lapatinib could decrease tumour-causing breast cancer stem cells in the primary breast cancers of women receiving neoadjuvant treatment (treatment given before the primary surgery for the disease)........

Breast Cancer: Multivitamin and Mineral Supplements
2008-04-15 15:51:00 Multiple enzyme digestive formulas can be taken with meals to aid in digestion. This is especially helpful for women who are undergoing or have recently undergone any form of chemotherapy. The effects of the drugs used will often compromise the function of the digestive tract for some time and therefore will adversely affect the ability to digest foods and nutrients properly and completely. A multiple enzyme digestive formula will aid in the absorption of nutrients, which is important in maintaining health and proper functioning of the body.Cadmium and magnesium are minerals that are important in helping to maintain and create bone mass. It is particularly important to take them after chemotherapy and radiation treatments. For reasons still unclear, women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy have a significant loss of bone during this period. Because it is difficult to digest, many women find to hard to take calcium during chemotherapy. On the other hand, if it is tolerable, t...

Breast Cancer and the Power of Smile

Whenever I found myself needing to break away from my feelings of worry, sadness, fear, doubt, anger, hurt or any negative emotions, I always knew that it's time just to STOP what I was thinking about for a moment and SMILE.Breast cancer can teach us many things if we are willing to look at it with a little smile. You can do that too you know. Just stop what you are thinking for a moment and SMILE.In fact try this, stop what you are thinking and smile but do it without expressing it with a facial smile, just Think Smile and then, notice what you are Feeling.Think smile!Be aware of what you are feeling.OK, now actually smile let your face open up.Be aware what you are feeling, anybody laughing? No, not now I mean before I asked the question.OK, another question.Who said you can't feel that feeling while you are dealing wi...

Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said: "Women who regularly drink too much are 50% more likely to develop breast cancer. "After the campaign no-one will be in any doubt as to how many units they're drinking and the impact that can have on their health." Stronger wine of up to 13% alcohol and larger 250ml glasses can make women think they are drinking less than they are. Breast Cancer - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
2008-04-09 18:34:00 Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women. In the US, about 180,000 women develop it each year. The disease can also occur in men, although cancer of the male breast accounts for less than 1 in 100 cases. The risk of it increases with age, doubling every 10 years. The disease is most commonly diagnosed in women over age 50. Very few women under age 30 develop it. Despite the rise in incidence, there has been a small drop in the number of deaths in the recent years and only about one-fifth of cases prove fatal. This reduction is due to improvements in treatment and the increased use of mammography for screening, which means that tumors can be detected early, when they often respond well to treatment.Screening may reduce the number of deaths in women over age 50 by up to 4 in 10. In the US, many doctors recommend that women over age 40 have a mammogram every 1-2 years and every year over age 50. A cancerous tumor may first develop in the breast lobules (the struct...

Green tea inhibits breast cancer in mice
2008-04-09 09:25:00 SAN DIEGO, April 8 (UPI) -- A green tea anti-oxidant that helps stop cell damage and aging may inhibit breast cancer, U.S. researchers suggest. University of Mississippi Medical Center researchers find the green tea anti-oxidant epigallocatechin-3- gallate, known as EGCG, significantly inhibits breast tumor growth in female mice. Senior researcher, Dr. Jian-Wei Gu suggests EGCG reduces breast cancer by targeting both tumor blood vessel formation through the lowering of vascular endothelial growth factor and tumor cell nutrients that promote growth and proliferation, or angiogenesis. "In this study we have demonstrated that the frequent ingestion of EGCG significantly inhibits breast tumor growth, vascular endothelial growth factor expression and tumor angiogenesis in mice," Gu says in a statement. Seven-week old female mice injected with breast cancer cells and given EGCG in their drinking water showed significant decreases in tumor cross section area, tumor weight and va...
