Nursing Cuteness
2008-06-03 02:43:00
Our new cute thing is that when they are done nursing they pull my shirt back down and say “Bye bye tissy!” F also once lunged at me across the bed after I got my bra out of the way and cried “I’m coming tissy!” We call nursing “tissy” rather than the more standard “nums” ...

Mommy?s Bliss Nipple Cream and breastfeeding
2008-05-29 17:00:00
The FDA has posted a warning about Mommy’s Bliss Nipple Cream, marketed by MOM Enterprises, Inc.  The product was marketed to help nursing mothers heal cracking nipples from nursing but it has been revealed that some of the ingredients are harmful, specifically chlorphenesin and phenoxyethanol. Chlorphenesin relaxes skeletal muscle and can depress the central nervous system and cause slow or shallow breathing in infants. Phenoxyenthanol, a preservative that is primarily used in cosmetics and medications, can also depress the central nervous system and may cause vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration in infants. Mothers and caregivers should seek immediate medical attention if their child shows signs and symptoms of a decrease in appetite, difficulty in awakening, limpness of extremities or a decrease in an infant’s strength of grip and a change in skin color. I’m incredibly shocked by all this, how could something designed specifically for the nursing...

I have friends that have had babies and they didn’t want to breastfeed because they didn’t want to ruin their breasts…I’m sorry. I find that extremely selfish. Breastfeeding Boosts the Child's Intelligence
2008-05-07 03:59:00
The precise cause is not yet knownBy Stefan Anitei, Science EditorMay 7, SoftpediaCurrently, in many western countries, less than 1% of women breastfeed continuously for the first six months of the baby's life. In the UK, the category most prone to breastfeeding was found to be formed of well educated, professional women, older than 30 and mothers for the first time. The fear of ending up with saggy breasts (although recent researches have come to infirm this theory), commodity, lack of time and other factors have contributed to this low percentage. With all that, studies have shown that colostrum, that yellowishmilk secreted after birth, is the first package of immune factors delivered to the infant's body. Breastfed babies are five times less likely to get gastroenteritis as compared to formula-fed ones, also two times less likely to catch a respiratory disease in their first seven years of life, as well as much less vulnerable to diabetes. Breastfeeding prevents children from tu...

Record National Breastfeeding Rates...Or Are They?
2008-05-01 02:06:00
This article debuts the latest national breastfeeding rate -77%- a 20-year high! WOW! The United States seems to be making great strides in re-establishing normal infant feeding. See below for a few excerpts and my thoughts..."About 77 percent of new mothers breast-feed, at least briefly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said."I think that a 77 percent breastfeeding rate is phenomenal but I also think this statistic is misleading. Its miseading because of the three words "at least briefly." That means that the 77 percent breastfeeding rate includes women who breastfeed for 10 seconds and then use formula. I think it would be interesting to see a statistic that separates women who are still breastfeeding exclusively at six months, women who are breastfeeding and supplementing with formula at six months, and women who only breastfed while in the hospital. "The percentage of black infants who were ever breast-fed rose most dramatically, to 65 percent. Only 36 percent were...
Traditional Vs. Baby-Led Breastfeeding
2008-04-27 09:39:00
"Giving babies regular, short feeds may benefit them and their mothers more than the popular 'baby-led' method", reports The Daily Telegraph today. That's according to a study that found regular feeds of up to 10 minutes on each breast led to increased weight gain. BBC News also covers the study of 63 breastfeeding mothers in Bradford. Half of them were told to use one breast to feed their baby, as and when it wanted being fed, and to only use the other breast if the baby was still hungry. The other half were advised to follow a routine of using each breast for a maximum of 10 minutes at a time, and to feed their baby about every three hours during the day, and on demand at night. The researchers found that babies in the second group were breastfed for longer, and gained more weight from birth to six-to-eight weeks. These reports are based on a relatively small study, and may not be representative of what might be seen in a larger group of women, or in women from other areas ...

Buyer Beware: Protect Your Baby from Bisphenol A (BPA)
2008-04-17 00:49:00
Bisphenol A or BPA has been in the news lately. According to this article:"The chemical Bisphenol A (BPA), widely used to make plastic packaging products, has just been declared toxic enough to be linked to a host of severe developmental and reproductive disorders common all across the United States. Breast and prostate cancers and premature puberty are some of the disorders associated with exposure to BPA."At the most, this is another reason to breastfeed. At the least (and for moms who pump), this is a reason to switch bottles. However, BPA can be in a host of other plastic products besides bottles- including sippy cups, storage bottles, and food storage containers. The following companies claim that their products are BPA-free:Medela: All bottles Dr Brown?s: Glass Bottles (all vent system pieces BPA Free), Dr. Browns Polypropylene bottles (due in store?s April 15th) BornFree: All bottles and cups BPA free Avent ?Via? disposable bottles Adiri Natural Nursers For a complete list o...
Breastfeeding Around the World: Brazil
2008-04-13 14:50:00
Over the next few weeks I'm going to showcase attitudes toward Breastfeeding from countries around the world. I think its interesting to see how different countries view Breastfeeding and how these countries are sometimes influenced by the United States. Here's what a student midwife in Brazil had to say about Brazilian attitudes towards breastfeeding:"Here in Brazil breastfeeding is very natural. Since breasts are only somewhat associated with sexuality, but most of all they represent motherhood and breastfeeding. Women breastfeed anywhere and you'd never even think of asking a woman to do anything while she is breastfeeding. There is a cultural belief that you should not bother women during nursing. We see it as the women is already busy, just as you would talk to someone who is busy working. We have many TV commercials for household products, like laundry detergent, where the women are depicted breastfeeding. The mom comes home from work with her sparkling white shirt, picks...
AWESOME Breastfeeding Ad
2008-04-12 21:50:00
I wish this advertisement were shown in the U.S. The ad below shows the wonder of breastfeeding- attachment to mom and life to babies. Of course, lets be real. This ad could never be shown in the U.S. because of ignorant attitudes toward breastfeeding. The oversexualization of the breast has produced two awkward and contradictory attitudes towards breasts. On the one hand, showing oversized photos of scantily clad women in push-up bras in Victoria's Secret is OK, but breastfeeding an infant/child in front of said store isn't.Those of you who are breastfeeding moms may have gotten disgusted stares or even asked to leave an establishment because other patrons were "uncomfortable" with you breastfeeding. Stand up for your rights- breastfeeding mothers in NJ have the right to breastfeed in ANY public establishment. Inform the manager that they are breaking the law by interfering with you and your breastfeeding child.I have three questions to ask those that are offended by the breastfe...

One of the family
2008-03-25 04:08:00
We just got back from Savannah. The whole family got to go down, see the city, and meet some of my relatives. The ones where Christopher's middle name came from. They are my mom's family. My grandmother's sister is still alive and just turned 90. She and her late husband were like parents to my mother. Her red velvet cake is a legend in our family, as is her strength and grace. They are what you would call country folks. That doesn't mean that they are backwards or uneducated, it means, quite literally, they live in the country. My great aunt's land looked very different on this trip. The cow barn that was a stone's throw from the house is gone. As is the chicken coop. There is nowhere for pigs right across the road, and I couldn't see where there was a fishing pond now. There is no more farm. Her oldest daughter is like a sister to my momma, and so even though we are cousins, I have always called her "Aunt." She takes in family like her momma did for my momma. My cousin J always...
Formula Freebies Cut Breastfeeding Time
2008-03-23 20:58:00
Read Tara Parker-Pope's latest post on her blog, WellHere's an excerpt:"The benefits of breast milk are well known, and national health programs encourage mothers to nurse infants rather than feed them formula from bottles. But hospitals actually undermine efforts to encourage breastfeeding by including free formula in the care packages they give mothers and babies as they leave the hospital, according to a study last month in The American Journal of Public Health.Researchers surveyed about 3,900 Oregon women who had babies in 2000 and 2001. Among those who were breastfeeding when they left the hospital, more than two-thirds said they had received hospital care packages containing formula. But the care packages had a dramatic impact on patterns of breastfeeding. Women who received the packs were 39 percent more likely to stop exclusive breastfeeding at 10 weeks or sooner than those who didn?t receive free formula, according to the report...According to data from the Centers for Dise...

One small step
2008-03-21 04:05:00
Today I nursed my child in the waiting room at the car dealership. There were exactly four men, one woman, and one toddler in the room with me. Two of the men had just separately asked me how old Bird was and commented on what a good baby he was. That is because he had been asleep for almost an hour while we waited on the Jeep to be serviced. Then he woke up. He wasn't supposed to do that. We were supposed to be in and out of there in time for me to get back home, collect my 83 pillows and lay down to nurse him. Unfortunately, there were more things that needed to be done than just the oil change I expected, and we were stuck there almost 2 hours.Bird needed to eat.So I fed him. I slouched down in my chair, getting as prone as I could without falling out of it. I put a blanket over my shoulder, which really was more a polite gesture than a shield, since I haven't yet mastered the trick of getting him latched on without both hands and staring down, waiting for the biggest open mouth...
Thinking twice about Johnson & Johnson
2008-03-20 14:26:00
Late to the game again. I stay about a day or two behind in blogland these days. But if you haven't heard, Johnson & Johnson is holding a little getaway called "Camp Baby" for the influential mommybloggers. People you read probably got invited and will have a lovely time at some sessions on how to braid hair and parallel park their minivans. Whatever.Aside from the carcinogens that Johnson & Johnson likes to use in their products, I now have another reason to hate them.Julie, over at Mothergoosemouse, was dis-invited from this little soire once they found out she was planning to bring her baby. To Camp Baby. Go figure.Oliver was born just a few days before Christopher and is breastfed. So no Camp Baby for Julie.I do not understand though, all of the remaining willing participants. Sitting around and writing about how uncool it is that they dis-invited a nursing mom from Camp Baby is one thing. Everyone still showing up and having a lovely time at hair braiding and minivan pa...
Where we are today & other randomness
2008-03-19 03:23:00
Nursing. Today we nursed. All weekend we practiced getting into new positions. We worked on relieving Bird's gas better. We nursed whenever and however long he wanted to do so.And things are better. The poor little dude is such a gulper though. He fills up with gas before he's full of milk, so a few good burps and 20 minutes later, he's hungry again. That works on the weekend, but not so much when I have to work during the week.So we'll do what we can.************Guy finished his cradle and the mattress finally came in. It's really beautiful. He refinished it to match our bedroom furniture and we bought some bedding that also matches the room. Now if we could only get him to sleep there. He will sleep there for his first stint of the night, but after he wakes up and nurses, I'm not about to try and put him back down. Besides, I really love spooning with my little man.************Guy was finally made an official employee today. It only took 13 months, but hey, that's the state f...
Nursing Pillows Make Breastfeeding Comfortable
2008-03-15 22:10:00
The first days of motherhood and lactation is a happy but an extremely strenuous time for any mother, and any breastfeeding mom needs a lot of support and encouragement.Positioning your baby comfortably while feeding him is a real stress, as u-shaped pillows, large teddy bears, rolled-up towels or sofa cushions will never secure your feeding ...
When laying around isn't lazy
2008-03-13 15:57:00
It's 11:00 AM. I'm still sitting in the bed. I have had someone or something attached to my boobs since 9:00. Bird has some gas issues. Possibly reflux. Might explain the thrashing and crying during feeding. The doctor said I just had to be patient and keep holding him to the breast. Let him work out the gas. It's a new doctor. He's miles better already. Although, it's not like the old doctor made that a challenge of some kind.My boobs are crying "uncle," and Bird has finally drifted off after an ounce from a bottle. It's going to come down to time I bet. I just won't have all morning long forever. New doctor says though, that very soon, he should be outgrowing some of that gas and I should notice nursing getting significantly easier.I like him. He offers hope along with his analysis. I hope he's right.
Christina Aguilera says breastfeeding helps her lose pregnancy weight

The truth
2008-03-07 03:03:00
The truth is, it still hurts. The truth is, I don't love it yet.The truth is that I wrote this post to remind myself that there was at least that one time that Bird was able to satiate himself to the point of bliss at my breast. Because it rarely happens.I pump, trying to store away breastmilk for when I start working again in a week or so. I do this after I nurse him, but inevitably, he will wake up right after I'm done pumping and be hungry again. So I give him what I just pumped in a bottle and in turn, have nothing stored for him.He and I aren't gelling. Our schedules are off somehow. I feel my biggest letdowns when we are out on a walk, or when he is sound asleep. When he is nursing, he gets fussy. He claws at my breast. He thrashes his head about. He pops on and off uncontrollably until my nipple feels as though it's been run through a cheese grater and I have to give up and go get a bottle.Fixing those bottles makes me feel like the widow that Elijah visited. Her oil never...

Breastfeeding Law in New Jersey
2008-03-06 02:29:00
The LLL website reviews the NJ Laws on Breastfeeding: "In 1997, New Jersey enacted a law that sets forth the importance of breastfeeding, and clarifies that women have a right to breastfeed her baby in public. This was one of the first laws that provided a fine and penalty for its violation."N.J.S.A. 26:4B-42. Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, a mother shall be entitled to breast feed her baby in any location of a place of public accommodation, resort or amusement wherein the mother is otherwise permitted.N.J.S.A. 26:4B-5,3. a. The health benefits of breastfeeding mothers
2008-03-05 23:05:00
Breastfeeding is a major public health issue. Extensive research, especially in recent years, documents the diverse advantages of breastfeeding not only for infants but also for breastfeeding women and their health. However, campaigning for mothers in the UK to breastfeed has proved a slow and somewhat daunting task. Indeed, the many benefits of breastfeeding have been expounded hand in hand with vigorous lobbying. Numerous research-based reports have confirmed repeatedly that breastmilk has the right balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, and antibodies to fight illness and infection, and can minimise the risk of newborns contracting gastroenteritis, respiratory, ear and urinary tract infections, or developing eczema. But, despite great efforts on the part ofNational Breastfeeding Awareness Week (NBAW) since 1993 and the NHS Priorities and Planning Framework 2003–2006, which aims to increase breastfeeding initiation rates by 2% annually, the UK still lags behind it’s European ...
