AvMap adds Breathalyzer to GPS
2008-06-09 23:59:00
AvMap adds Breathalyzer to GPSPreviously, NDrive’s G400 was the only GPS to have an integrated breathalyzer, but now, the Italian company AvMap, has followed and added a breathalyzer into their own GPS. With a GPS unit dubbed the Geosat 6 Drive Safe, it only seems appropriate that it includes a safety feature such as a breathalyzer. The Geosat 6 Drive Safe comes with a built-in breathalyzer that can tell you your blood alcohol level and let you know if it is advisable to drive, or if you should call up a friend. ‘Thanks to Geosat 6 Drive Safe, drivers can now check their blood alcohol level before driving. The new Geosat 6 Drive Safe comes with built-in sensor for alcohol test: this will allow the driver to decide whether they are sober enough to drive. Taking the test is very easy: select the alcohol tests button on the touch screen, get close to the sensor and blow to get the results immediately to see whether it is wise for you to be behind the wheel.’Furthermore, it is set ...

Root Beer Kegger: The Beer was Fake, the Breathalysers were real.
2008-03-31 15:00:00
This past weekend undoubtedly saw its share of keg parties in residential neighborhoods throughout North America. Someone's parents nip off to somewhere tropical to forget for one all-inclusive week the burdens of home, and return to wrecked furniture, raised insurance premiums and a permanently shaken faith in young squire Johnny's sense of responsibility. On any other day, we'd be chronicling the unholy aftermath of one of those parties (which mostly ends up on Facebook), or at least lending our support to the move to see drinking ages lowered and thus spare Ma Suburbs from having to discover a pile of forgotten a few months after the last foam has been sucked out of a keg.Today, however, we'd like to salute the actions of some Wisconsin teens (not the ones pictured here, who would indeed be arriving on a very short bus indeed if still attending high school at their ages) who threw a keg party on Saturday -- one in which 1919 Classic American Draft Root Beer was on tap. Before...
Drunk Elvis Impersonator 'All Shook Up' in court
2008-03-07 13:00:00
A few years back, we found a rental car company that didn?t charge extra for mileage and proceeded to make them rethink that policy by striking out on an impromptu 1300 mile trip from Toronto to New Orleans with a couple of buddies. En route, we took in the best of what the southern US has to offer: happily clogging arteries with their delicious early-grave food, spending more than one late night boozing it up on Nashville?s main strip, and also doing the tourist guidebook stuff that involved sites near and dear to our hearts like the Jack Daniels distillery and Johnny Cash?s house in Hendersonville Tennessee. We were disappointed to see that the latter was closed to the public upon our arrival, but heartened when we saw a sign across the street for something called ?Trinity Music City, USA?. Alas, this enthusiasm was premature. ?Trinity Music City, USA? is what Conway Twitty's Xanadu-like compound ?Twitty City? was renamed when the Christian Trinity Broadcasting Company overt...
Innovative Breathalyzer Screens for Disease

The next time someone tells you to blow into a tube for ten seconds you may be surprised to learn they won’t be wearing a cop uniform. Your doctor will be in his usual all-whites at your annual checkup. That’s because a group of scientists at the NIST and the University of Colorado have developed ...
Drunk Driver Calls 911 on Self: Hello Wisconsin!
2008-01-30 15:00:00
As we've noted in previous posts, to the point of smacking our heads repeatedly against the steering wheel in frustration, we unequivocally, in no way whatsoever endorse impaired driving---our Top Ten Greatest Drinking & Driving Anthems of All Time referring solely to the soundtrack of a drunken, Grand Theft Auto game in the confines of one's moldy basement. That being said, we've taken great pleasure here in pointing out the folly of those who do get behind the wheel blotto and while this may not garner any favor with those who fly red ribbons from their antennae, we'd be hypocrites if we claimed otherwise---as authors of a sizable chapter in our book entitled, Contents May Shift in Transit: Drunk and on the Move.In a subsection of the above, Chariots of Firewater no less, we noted a drunk driver in Germany who got sidetracked with a flat, and in a breach of male etiquette dictating that you change your own damn tire drunk or otherwise, decided to phone for help. In his comp...
Retirement Home
2008-01-27 16:33:00
Mabeline, an elderly lady in a retirement home, was a bit of a demon in her wheelchair and loved to charge around the corners at maximum speed, pretending she was driving a Ferrari. The other residents tolerated her, and some actually joined in!One day, Mabeline was speeding up one corridor when a door opened and a male resident stepped out with his arm outstretched. "Stop!" he said in a firm voice. "Have you got a license for that thing?" Mabeline fished around in her handbag on her lap and pulled out a Kit-Kat wrapper which she held up to him. "OK" he said and she went on her way. After taking the corner near the TV lounge on one wheel, another man stepped out in front of her and yelled, "Stop! Have you got a valid road tax for your vehicle, madam?" Mabeline dug into her handbag again and pulled out an old supermarket receipt which she held up to him and he allowed her to carry on.Going down the final corridor before the front door, a third resident stepped out in front of her. Thi...

Breathalyzers determined not to be accurate way to measure BAC- testers oft
2007-11-03 05:42:00
Admittedly, I haven’t researched the claims this site makes, but if its true… The dirty secret behind breathalyzers. I don’t even look hard for this stuff anymore. I trip over it. It’s everywhere. Here is the quick and dirty. In 1985 they determined Breathalyzers to be accurate. In 1990 a case was in court, ...
Breathalyzers reliability - Defence Need Not Raise High Unreliability, only

The defence brings forward evidence that it should be changed every 7 days. At trial, the Judge dismisses the accused's argument that the samples are unreliable. On appeal, the court states [28] Of greater concern, however, is what the trial judge did with respect to the onus of proof. There was no case pointed out to me where it is established that the defence has an obligation to prove unreliability flowing from a breach of the protocol. In considering the defence expert evidence the trial judge indicated that the defence needed to establish a high degree of unreliability before he would have found unreliable and inaccurate results. With all due respect, the Crown must prove all of the elements of the offence beyond a reasonable doubt. It is not for the defence to establish a high degree of unreliability. The defe...

Breathalyzer for smokers
2007-10-23 06:01:00
Are you a secret smoker? Have you been fooling your family and co-workers into thinking that you're smoke free? Well, your days of secrecy are coming to an end - because of a science project. Yes, that's right, a high school science project.Ashray Reddy, a sophomore high school student, and his father Dr. S. Reedy presented data at the American College of Chest Physicians meeting in Chicago on Monday. They took a pulse cooximeter, a machine used to identify carbon monoxide in patients and firefighters, to identify if the study subject was a smoker (HealthDay News). The device, which Reddy said costs $4,000-$5,000, measures the level of carbon monoxide in hemoglobin. It accurately spotted up 95 percent of all smokers when Reddy looked only at those who had a 6 percent or higher level of carbon monoxide. It will be interesting to see if these results are able to be repeated. If they are, then the ramifications of this are huge. I can see insurance companies using this to see how high ...
Impaired driving ? Evidence to the contrary ? Use of breathalyzer results
2007-09-26 01:12:00
Ontario Courts of Justice are now bound to follow the position, first developed in R. v. Snider, [2006] O.J. No. 879 (C.J.), that, on a charge of "over 80," if the Crown is not relying on the presumptive accuracy of a breathalyzer certificate, a trial judge may rely on breathalyzer results when considering whether the defence?s "evidence to the contrary" has raised a reasonable doubt as to the accused?s guilt
ArcaMax.com - Four Wheels and Two: Make In-Car Breathalyzers Mandatory?

ArcaMax.com - Four Wheels and Two: Make In-Car Breathalyzers Mandatory?: "From the ArcaMax Publishing, Automotive Newsletter: http://www.arcamax.com/news/aut-omotive/s-227591-141384 Four Wheels and Two: Make In-Car Breathalyzers Mandatory? Eric Peters 'Pre-emptive war' got us into a real mess in Iraq. So maybe we ought to think twice before adopting similar measures when it comes to traffic law. Specifically, when it comes to an idea floated by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to require that all new cars be fitted with an ignition interlock that can detect alcohol in the driver's system - and shut the car down if it does. Several large automakers (including GM, Ford, Toyota and Honda) also support the idea - and are working on ways to get these things into new cars - maybe within the next two or three years. Could be sooner. Sounds ok in principle - sort of like the idea of liberating Iraq. The devil's in the details, though. The technology itself is pretty straightforwar...
Man wins breathalyzer source code in court case

Man wins breathalyzer source code in court case Posted Aug 10th 2007 5:36AM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Misc. Gadgets It looks like those alleged drunken drivers in Florida trying to get their hands on the source code to the breathalyzer that deemed them intoxicated may have been on to something, as the Minnesota Supreme Court has now granted just that to a defendant currently facing DUI charges in an unrelated case. According to CNET, the court ruled that CMI, makers of the Intoxilyzer 5000EN, must turn the breathalyzer's source code over to the defense attorneys, who said they needed it because "for all we know, it's a random number generator." Apparently, the case wound up focusing largely on whether the source code was actually owned by CMI or by the state, with the court ultimately siding with the latter camp, although not without a good deal of dispute. No word on a next move from either party, but we have a sneaking suspicion that it won't be too long before someone sta...

405. Bright Idea: Car Breathalyzer
2007-07-26 17:43:00
Nissan has come up with this breathalyser that won’t allow the car to start unless the driver is blowing under the legal limit. Toyota is working on a similar system that analyzes the sweat of your hands. Though I doubt it will be included in most cars as a standard feature, it could/should be installed ...

A police officer was making his daily round. Suddenly, a red corvet passed by him at a 100 m/h. He went after the car and stoped it. As he walked towards the car’s window, he noticed that the driver was a gorgeous blond. He went to her and asked for her driver’s licence and registration ...
Breathalyzer Tests being given--to Teachers
2007-03-20 01:28:00
A Bulgarian school is reporting an improvement in student grades after introducing a breathalyzer test for teachers. The headmaster of Hristo Botev school in Vratsa brought in the tests for all teachers after students complained they were turning up smelling of beer and the local home-made spirit rakia. Headmaster Victor Krastev said: "At first the teachers thought I was joking but they soon got used to the test, and it works perfectly - now they are all as sober as babies and we have seen a 15% improvement in grades." He said he planned to pass on his experiences to other headmasters who claim they have the same problems with staff.Goosey's Gabbings...First of all, I have to say I've never heard of the cliche "Sober as babies.." but I guess it's basically logical...anyways...I'm glad that scores are improving, but good Lord...Breathalyzer tests for Teachers? So it's that much of a problem, eh? The funny thing is--you would think that with the lowered inhibitions and o...
Stay Sober with the Cell Phone Breathalyzer
2006-12-31 23:06:02
The Japanese company, KDDI, has come up with a breathalyzer attachment for mobiles phones, targeted to cab and bus companies. It’s a good idea to target businesses but I see great potential in the consumer market for something that makes sure you drive legal. What happens is before the driver can begin his or her trip, they must use the device and make sure they are under the limit. This verification is then sent to a computer at ‘headquarters’, with a snapshot of the driver to ensure no foul play, plus GPS can tell the boss their location also. Why is the guy at his laptop testing himself? Japan had over 14,000 drink driving accidents last year so the Alc-Mobile isn’t such a bad idea.
