Odds & Ends: Webb, Chapman, ChiSox, Brewers
2009-09-23 20:44:00
Wednesday evening link session... ESPN.com's Buster Olney thinks Brandon Webb is right in not accepting a compromise deal from the Diamondbacks. He lists multiple teams that would be willing to offer the former Cy Young Award winner a lucrative one-year contract, including the Dodgers, Angels, Cubs, White Sox, Yankees and Red Sox. Scott Merkin of MLB.com gathered this quote from White Sox GM Kenny Williams, regarding his outlook heading into the offseason: "No. 1, I don?t like what I see on the free agent market, and what I do like, it?s going to cost you a No. 1 pick. " According to Jorge Arangure of ESPN.com, Aroldis Chapman's agent will be present at Yankee Stadium this weekend to take in a game against the Red Sox. Chapman, though, will remain in Andorra. Arangure also "tweets" that Cuban first baseman Jose Julio Ruiz has finally become a free agent. The 25-year-old hit .305/.408/.467 over 52 games in the Serie Nacional last season before suddenly defecting to the Dominican Re...

Rookie Ty ColvinContinues his great debutThis time with his gloveDerrek Lee's still hotGets his 35th home runGoing 3-for-4The Cubs are doing their best to keep fans interested as the season winds down.  Rookie "phenom" Tyler Colvin was impressive once again, this time on defense as he robbed Ryan Braun of a 3-run homer in the 9th inning.  Randy Wells had another quality start, giving up just 1 run (a Prince Fielder home run in the 2nd after the offense had given him a 6-run lead) and striking out five Brewers in 6 innings to notch his 11th win.  Only Ted Lilly has more wins, with 12.  The Cubs will try to extend their winning streak to 4 games by sweeping...

Today's haiku was stolen from @c1t1z3nx on Twitter:It may be too lateTo reach post-season this yearBut winning's still fun I was going to write my own haiku, as usual, for today's game.  But @c1t1z3nx captured by thoughts with his great tweet.  You should follow him for more great Cubs tweets.  Thank you, Seth, I hope you don't mind that I've used your tweet here.  It looks like the departure of Milton Bradley removed a huge weight from the shoulders of the Cubs.  The bats came alive, with back-to-back home runs in the second inning (Lee and Ramirez, for the 4th time this year) and hits for all the position players except Micah Hoffpauir.  Tyler Colvin made his major league debut...

Fourth inning grand slamRandy Wells' low point todayCubs settle for splitRandy Wells had control problems today, walking two in the first (but escaping after giving up just one run) and then giving up two more walks in the fourth.  With a single sandwiched between those last walks, the bases were loaded for Jody Gerut who hit his second career grand slam to give the Brewers a 5-2 lead.  The Cubs climbed back to within one run on a Micah Hoffpauir double in the bottom of the 4th but never really recovered, managing only one hit in the last five innings.  Now it's on to St. Louis for a series that is only meaningful for bragging rights, and a chance for...

I’m no good at statistics, but I believe the Cubs will be watching the post-season on TV with the rest of us.  (Note to readers: it is extremely unlikely that any of the Cubs will be coming to your house. Perhaps Spellcheck, but only if you have a kegger.)   We stand 6.5  back with 20 games remaining, so have optimism if you want.  I choose whiskey.   That said, I still want them to win.  Win, damn you!  Figure the lineups out yourselves.  I have whiskey to attend to.  ...

So. . .um hey! Good morning! Uh, remember yesterday when I dedicated the entire game thread to declaring that Soriano wasn't moving out of the leadoff spot and we all just had to get over wanting him to move down in the lineup? Um. . . .heh Rookie Sam Fuld is expected to move into the Cubs leadoff spot Saturday with Alfonso Soriano moving to the middle of the order. Manager Lou Piniella declined to discuss the move, except to say "we'll probably make a few adjustments with our lineup." Soriano was 0-for-5 in Friday's 2-1 victory over Milwaukee after a two-day rest and is hitting .173 over his last 36 games. He said he will hit anywhere Piniella...

Photo courtesy Chicago Tribune What a difference a week makes. After a miserable series in Detroit and another at the Cell, followed by a so-so series in Pittsburgh, all is right with the world after one win over the Brewers. Miraculously, despite all the turmoil of the first half of his season, the Cubs find themselves only 2.5 games back of the division-leading Brewers. Before some select members of LOHO go overboard with Fuld-a-mania, let's take a moment for a LOHO-wide reality check. Has Sam Fuld played exceptionally well in his first two games with the Cubs? Yes. Is it nice to see a leadoff hitter who really works a count? For sure. Would it be better for the Cubs...

Are we not unable to make our way across a room without a small person attaching themselves to our legs and screeching about something? Do we have to watch really crappy baseball, too? Chicago Cubs, I implore you: Mother's Day is about more than pink bats and stupid articles about Spellcheck and his mother (even if they do give us some insight as to the origins of his tragic fashion choices). It's about easing the suffering of the mother in your life. And believe me, if your mothers have been watching the last few games, they are suffering. Let it end. The only part of Ararmis Ramirez currently un-injured. Yes, we lost last night. Yes, we're back in 4th place, once again looking up at the Reds (boo!). Yes, Aramis Ramirez has been mortally wounded, thus necessitating additional playing time for Aaron Miles. Yes, Ryan Freel is now for some reason on our team. Yes, I have a headache. I suppose I could sit here and give you all a list of silver linings after yesterday's debacle, but I won't. Because Umbra has already done it for me: Umbra's Top Ten Reasons Not to Panic 10.  The Cubs are 2-4 in 1-run games.  A run here or there, and this team wins more of those.  Yeah, but a quarter inch the other way and you'd have missed completely. 9.  Milton Bradley has already blown up at the Ump and gotten tossed.  He is contrite and wants to change, so this will never happen again. 8.  Fukudome has changed his approach from last year.  He only changes approaches about once a year, so if the team does poo...

Our hero. A trade! Hooray! Kind of. . . . There's nothing I like better than having a trade sprung on us (WHAMO!!!!) out of nowhere. It's exicting, fraught with possibilities, and breaks up those long days before a night game. That said, I become immediately less exicted upon hearing that the trade involves the Orioles, populated as they are with washed-up, bad-at-baseball, former Cubs.   While that wasn't the case here, I have a hard time getting nce I learned of the Joey Gathright for Ryan Freel trade, even though it seems that Ryan will fit right in, in the worst possible way: avg. 133, obp .350, slg .133, ops .483 So yeah. And while I never saw Joey Gathright actually bat, ESPN says that his line looked like this: avg .214, obp .267, slg .214, ops .481 Plus, there was this: On top of that, Freel's already been on the DL once this season (whether for actual injury or just sucking at baseball, I'm not sure), he's, had two DUIs (and here we are about to stick him right...

I'll be damned.  The Easter Bunny is Canadian! And so is todays starting pitcher!  See what I did there?  Dempster's from Can- oh never mind. I love this picture, but check it out, Dempster's kid is wearing Crocs in public! Ryan Dempster looks to improve on his first outing today, while leading the Cubs to a win in this rubber game.  Nothing will please me more than taking two of three from Brewers.  You see, I live in Cheeseland, surrounded by Brewer fans, and Packer loving lunatics.  They seriously use the winning of one stinking playoff game as some sort of rallying cry up here.  This cannot continue.  So please, for the sake of my sanity, WIN THIS FREAKING GAME. That's pretty much all that could be said yesterday At the risk of repetition, that was no fun yesterday.  That's not true - it was fun for a while, but not so much toward the end.  I shan't say anything more about it, as I have put it out of my head.  I focus only upon tonight. In that regard, the Beast is coming off of his first Opening Day win in five tries, so there is reason for optimism.  Z is facing Dave Bush, who had a less than great appearance against the Giant earlier in the week.  Let's hope that same Dave Bush shows up tonight (that same guy who is 1-10 against the Cubs since 2006).   Let's hope the Cubs defense does also. Back to last night for a moment.  Kevin Gregg?  Sharpen up.  Now.  Marmol is warming up, and you don't get THAT many chances, just because you did all right in Florida.  Just saying. A very Quiet HoHoKam Spring Training, Day 2 Now that the fun of having baseball back is wearing off we settle into the hilarity of early spring training baseball, because really, there are players we will never hear from again. Of course out on the field today might be the guy who gets called up in August and saves the season, really its anyone's guess.  The next radio broadcast The reigning NL Central Cubs take on last years second place Milwaukee Brewers.  I was going to give you a rundown on the Brewers, but I have no idea who is going to be playing today, I doubt we'll see Trevor Hoffman, but maybe newcomer Trot Nixon will make an appearance.  And if you're having Cory Provus withdrawal you could spin the dial on your radio to catch him calling on the Brewers side.  Other than that hang out, post a few comments, and lets get this game underway.   We don't get another radio broadcast until next Wednesday, so soak it up now people.   Lineups to ...

Look, I know it's not terribly fun to think about. But it's Monday, September's coming to an end and with it any real chance of decent weather, the Packers lost yesterday... so let's get this over with and think a little bit about what's going to happen when we die. Not in the metaphysical, afterlife-y sense, but in the "what is my family going to do about my gravestone" sense. You want it to be done right, don't you? You want your family to know what your wishes are, and you want it to memorialize you in the manner that befits the life you had, or the life you wish you had. And you don't want to put additional pressure on your family, which has already had to deal with losing you, by making them make decisions about how to memorialize you. With Astral Stone, you can pick out the memorial, headstone, or gravestone you want; Astral Stone memorials are lasting ones, created to uphold the solemn duty of honoring life and to do so in a lasting, dignified manner. Don't put it...

My friends, There was a dream that was Milwaukee. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish, it was so fragile. Tonight, we must burn that dream to the ground. Bernie Brewer also dreams about the Jim and Pam wedding.  Well that dream's going to be crushed, too! The key to cutting the magic number in half is that-a-way. Harden. Bush. Too easy. Yes, I'm 8 years old. Insert (heh) your best joke below. Innuendos aside, Rich (or "the butt all the ladies and gd/carl swoon over) is making his second start since the whole discomfort thing. Against St. Louis a week ago, he gave up two runs and five hits in six innings, acknowledging his velocity was down but also saying people shouldn't put emphasis on that, as long as he's changing speeds. Hey, however you get it done. The Brewers have Bush (Revenge of the Nerds reference), who is starting on just three days rest. He's winless against the Cubs in two starts this year, getting rocked to a total of 13 combined runs. And the Brewers used 38 pitchers out of the bullpen last night, so here's hoping the Cubs get on the big green scoreboard early and often. Today's game is unfortunately on Comcast. But those who are watching in Chi-city will fill everyone in, or the cartoons on Gameday will also sh...

Pretty good time to be a Cubs fan right now. Rather than wonder when the other shoe will drop, once again I'm choosing to enjoy all this. I mean, magic number is four, the Brewers are self-imploding, Captain Cheese lost again to the Cubs last night, Veggie Burger Prince got caught looking on one of the sickest pitches I've seen this season, Z THREW A NO-HITTER, Tru Blood is awesome, House is back and the Black Keys concert is less than a month away? Yep, no complaints here. Hell, I don't even have anything bad to say about tonight's starter, Jason Marquis. He's won four of his last five decisions. Not bad for a No. 5 guy. Marquis goes up against Ben Sheets, whose time is dwindling for the Brewers. Same could be said about Milwaukee. Game is on WCIU, or for the rest of us, ESPN! Rock! Lineups a'comin.
Tuesday Night Game Thread: Brewers @ Cubs 7:05 CT/8:05 ET
2008-09-16 23:54:00
I'm sending good thoughts of more home runs to Lee Wow things have changed in the last week.  This time last Tuesday Cubs fans were in a collective freefall, mostly because the team was in a collective freefall.  And only the less than mediocre playing of the Brewers seemed to stand in the way of the greatest meltdown in baseball history. Of course a few days off, followed by 18 innings of 1 hit baseball and you can actually feel the confidence rising.  But before we all get all high and mighty acting like we're entitled to this (which we are, but I don't really feel like becoming a Yankees fan) there are still 13 (maybe 14) games to get through, no off days and the division title is still 6 magical numbers away. Tonight starts what was supposed to be a tough stretch to end the season.  Milwaukee is in town for a 3 game series.  Yost is gone so the Cubs might have to win this one straight up, and with CC Sabathia pitching that's not easy. In fact the Br...
