Angels Sign Brian Fuentes
2008-12-31 22:00:00
Former New Haven Raven signs with Angels: Former New Haven Ravens and Colorado Rockies pitcher Brian Fuentes has signed a two year, $17.5 million contract with a $9 million club option for a third year with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Fuentes was 1-5 with a 2.73 ERA and 30 saves for the Rockies ...
The Yankees And Brian Fuentes
2008-06-02 10:33:00
Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post advises: Keep an eye on the Yankees' interest in Brian Fuentes, whom they have liked for years. New York needs a reliable late-inning setup man to replace Joba Chamberlain, who joins the rotation Tuesday. Keep in mind that Renck is not saying discussions have occurred recently.  But Fuentes would certainly be a nice addition for the Yanks.  He has a 2.78 ERA and 2.63 K/BB in 22.2 innings this year. Surely the Rockies are looking for a young player or two in return.  The trades of Octavio Dotel and Eric Gagne last year might be comparables.  Dotel required Kyle Davies, a promising pitcher who had not experienced much big league success.  The Gagne package was headed by raw prospect Engel Beltre, and also included useful MLB-ready pieces in Kason Gabbard and David Murphy. Also keep in mind that if the price for Fuentes is too high, Brian Cashman can turn to familiar target Damaso Marte of the Pirates.
Brian Fuentes says he harbors no animosity over losing closer job, arbitrat
2008-02-17 23:55:00
Brian Fuentes would rather be a $6.5 million closer than a $5 million setup man. He’s not going to gripe about not getting his wishes, though. “I’m happy to have a job. There’s a lot of guys right now that don’t have jobs,” said the three-time All-Star, who lost his role as Colorado’s closer last summer but rebounded as an eighth-inning specialist to help lead the Rockies to their first NL pennant. Chien-Ming Wang, Brian Fuentes, Jose Valverde lose in arbitration as owners
2008-02-16 00:45:00
Pitchers Chien-Ming Wang, Brian Fuentes and Jose Valverde lost in salary arbitration Friday as baseball teams improved to 4-0 with five cases potentially remaining this year. Two players who had been scheduled for hearings next week reached agreements, with Cincinnati giving second baseman Brandon Phillips a $27 million, four-year contract and Seattle settling on a ...
Rockies beat reliever Brian Fuentes in salary arbitration (AP)
2008-02-15 18:36:00
The Colorado Rockies defeated reliever Brian Fuentes in salary arbitration when a panel ruled Friday the reliever should get $5.05 million this year rather than his request for $6.5 million. Arbitrators Robert Bailey, Dan Brent and Elliott Shriftman made the decision one day after listening to arguments. Read the full story.
Chien-Ming Wang, Brian Fuentes, Jose Valverde go to salary arbitration (AP)
2008-02-15 01:25:00
Chien-Ming Wang went to an arbitration hearing Thursday, the first for the New York Yankees since the team won its case against Mariano Rivera in 2000. Relievers Brian Fuentes of Colorado and Jose Valverde of Houston also went to arbitration. Wang, a 19-game winner in each of the last two seasons, was eligible for arbitration ...
Braves Eyeing Brian Fuentes
2007-12-15 17:54:00
According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves are interested in Rockies reliever Brian Fuentes.  However, they don't want to take on his entire salary. Fuentes earned $3.5MM in 2007, and will get a raise in his last year before free agency.  It wouldn't be surprising to see him up around $5MM for 2008.  That's the price of a good setup man these days. Mike Gonzalez was supposed to be the Braves' late-inning southpaw reliever, but he'll probably be out until June due to Tommy John surgery.  It seems the Rockies' asking price is steep for a year of Fuentes - they wanted Aaron Heilman and then some from the Mets, and Jed Lowrie from the Red Sox. showad();
Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Barrett, Fukumori
2007-11-08 22:59:00
What are the Rockies up to as they plot to defend their NL pennant?  Tracy Ringolsby and Troy E. Renck have the latest. Ringolsby says Garrett Atkins is staying put, which should help the third baseman relax a little bit.  This echoes Renck's sentiments yesterday.  Renck also noted that the Rox won't be offering Atkins a multiyear deal anytime soon. Yesterday Renck said that after Yorvit Torrealba, the Rockies were considering Jose Molina, Paul Lo Duca, Jason Kendall, and Ramon Castro for catcher.  However Ringolsby says today that Michael Barrett and Kendall are the main targets.  Renck has come on board with that today, noting that Dan O'Dowd has contacted the agents for Barrett, Kendall, and Lo Duca. Ringolsby adds that the Rockies are exploring the Japanese reliever market, namely Hitoki Iwase and Kazuo Fukumori.  Fukumori might appeal as the cheaper of the two. Meanwhile the Indians, Brewers, Phillies, and Mets like Brian Fuentes.  We've a...
Tigers Could Lose Rogers, Move On To Silva
2007-11-08 16:21:00
Leave it to Scott Boras to be unsatisfied with Kenny Rogers' declarations that he will either play for the Tigers or retire.  Boras told Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski yesterday that Rogers wanted to explore the open market.  The Tigers remain Rogers' first choice, but Boras wants to be make sure the the 43-year old southpaw is paid at a level commensurate with his peers.  To Boras that would be the Maddux-Schilling-Glavine range, which is roughly $10MM.  Rogers earned $8MM in 2007, and is probably a tad less appealing than that trio.  According to Jon Paul Morosi (linked above), the Mariners and Rangers would be in the mix if the Tigers couldn't get something done.  Dombrowski won't let the Rogers wrinkle stop him from pursuing other pitchers.  Morosi says the Tigers have already expressed interest in Carlos Silva.  Wow, that list is growing rapidly. The team's other focus is relief pitching, given Joel Zumaya's injury.  They still wa...
Rockies Expect A Quiet Offseason
2007-11-05 17:44:00
Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus recently wrote in reference to the Rockies: Teams that overachieve expectations tend to keep everything in place, and in fact that?s exactly what Charlie Monfort is saying. This is likely to be one of the bigger misplays of the offseason. Indeed, no one is expecting any kind of shake-up or blockbuster.  That said, Tracy Ringolsby indicates that teams will inquire on Brian Fuentes and Garrett Atkins over the next few months.  The free agent market for closers and third basemen isn't robust. Ringoslby notes that Josh Fogg may seek the Jason Marquis special - three years, $21MM.  The Rockies will pass, instead entertaining bringing Jason Jennings back. The Rockies are also expected to sign a veteran catcher to help Chris Iannetta along.  Ringolsby names Yorvit Torrealba, Jason Kendall, and Paul Lo Duca as the options.  Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post names the same trio. Renck adds that the Rockies will attempt to re-sign Ka...
Jon Garland For Brian Fuentes?
2007-09-09 19:44:00
As you know, Kenny Williams is looking for two relievers (one proven) for starter Jon Garland.  Part of the motivation is moving Garland's $12MM salary in his last year before free agency.  You may also recall that the Rockies inquired on Mark Buehrle, Jose Contreras, and Garland this summer.  Talks stalled when the White Sox insisted on southpaw starter Franklin Morales or third baseman Ian Stewart. According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the teams could re-engage in talks involving Garland.  The discussion would begin with lefty veteran reliever Brian Fuentes.  Renck believes Fuentes will make about $7MM in '08, his last year before free agency.  So the White Sox would trim roughly $5MM from the payroll with such a move.  Perhaps Williams would ask for 23 year-old reliever Juan Morillo to complete the deal.  Morillo fits the "young reliever with closer potential" mold and was reportedly clocked at 104 mph a few years back ...
Renck's Latest Rockie Rumors
2007-08-28 18:28:00
Rockies beat reporter Troy E. Renck had the scoop on all kinds of Rockie rumors yesterday; I'm just now getting to it.  Let's look at some highlights from his column. Renck suggests the Rox take a look at Bob Wickman.  Meanwhile, the Phillies actually inquired but aren't expected to work out a deal.  The Indians will take a pass. Renck mentions that the Rockies have "long coveted" catcher Paul Lo Duca.  Lo Duca should be there for the signing this winter. The Rockies will have around $45MM tied up in Todd Helton, Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, Brad Hawpe, Brian Fuentes, and Aaron Cook for 2008.  Even if the team raises its $55MM payroll, someone has to go.  By the way, locking up Holliday long-term will cost a king's ransom.  He's a Scott Boras client. Given the burden of Todd Helton's contract and his no-trade clause, he may be immovable.  But a .400 OBP is still valuable any way you slice it, so perhaps the Red Sox or Angels ...
Brian Fuentes returns from DL but won?t resume closer duties with Rockies (
2007-08-15 05:23:00
Reliever Brian Fuentes was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday night by the Colorado Rockies. The left-hander won’t return as closer. Fuentes had been the Rockies’ closer for most of the season, with 20 saves in 26 opportunities, but blew four straight saves during a road trip and was demoted. Read the full story. ...
McAdam On Red Sox Trade Possibilities
2007-07-19 16:01:00
Yesterday, Sean McAdam of The Providence Journal posted an article discussing trade possibilities for the Red Sox.  Let's discuss. It seems that the Red Sox will add a bullpen arm despite the fine work of Manny Delcarmen.  Apparently they want someone with experience.  Eric Gagne doesn't seem likely, nor does Brad Lidge.  Instead, Chad Qualls, Dan Wheeler, and maybe Salomon Torres or Scott Linebrink could be acquired.  The focus is said to be on the Houston relievers.  Wheeler seems like a solid buy-low option.  You can add Octavio Dotel to the radar as well.  And let's throw Brian Fuentes into the mix.  UPDATE: Today, McAdam added Damaso Marte as a reliever the Red Sox like.  He says the price for Torres is "way too high" at present.  And according to the Boston Globe, Drayton McLane will not even consider moving Lidge. The Sox would get involved on a top-flight starter like Roy Oswalt or Dontrelle Willis.  Ca...

Healey's Latest
2007-06-19 01:34:00
Mark Healey at Gotham Baseball has long been a solid, underappreciated source of inside information.  He's got another Rumor Mill up at his site.  My summary follows. The Yankees have an eye on big-name 1Bs like Mark Teixeira and Todd Helton.  But more realistically, they're looking at Tampa Bay's Carlos Pena.  He's got the defense, so even if he regresses to a 20 HR bat it's a nice pickup.  Healey's source believes Tyler Clippard is too much but the Rays like Sean Henn.  The Yanks have also inquired about the versatile Ty Wigginton. The Reds, Rockies, and others have been scouting the Yankees' Double A Trenton affiliate.  Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy, and Brett Gardner are probably the most desirable players on that roster.  Gotham Baseball has previously connected the Yankees to Brian Fuentes and David Weathers.  Another reliever the Yankees like is Chad Bradford, though the O's price may be too high. Gotham quotes an NL scout ...
Phillies Kicking Brian Fuentes' Tires
2007-05-30 17:31:00
The latest from the prolific and well-connected Ken Rosenthal: A member of the Phillies asks, "Is Brian Fuentes available?" Well, not yet ? and maybe not at all if the Rockies' resurgence continues. The Rockies will discuss Fuentes, their left-handed closer, only if they fall out of contention. Fuentes, who turns 32 on Aug. 9, is earning $3.5 million this season, and eligible for free agency after next season. The search for quality bullpen arms will likely be a theme that lasts throughout the season for the Phillies, given that Brett Myers has proven to be a mere mortal, unable of pitching two innings everyday and that Tom Gordon is probably used up. From this phan's perspective, I fear that by the time some quality relievers shake loose from the trade tree, the Phillies themselves will have fallen out of contention. Tom Goyne is the author of Balls, Sticks, & Stuff, a Phillies-centric site, and maintains the Phloggers' Pheeds page, a source for the latest comment...
