Brian Roberts & Around The Blogosphere

At this point, with the reality of Mark Teixeira not being signed by Baltimore, the question that many have asked is what will happen to Brian Roberts? As most of us know, the Baltimore Orioles are in the rebuilding stage and have has eleven straight losing seasons. Moreover, the team plays in the AL East, and with the Rays as defending division champs, and with the powerhouse Red Sox, along with the retooled Yankees, one must think the organization has the task of climbing Mount Everest.Andy MacPhail -- despite the misgivings of a few fans -- I think has done a solid job in rebuilding the team. There's probably going to have a painful decision to be made with Roberts, and I think he will be traded before his contract is up.I am going to fathom that Baltimore will offer him an extension, but he will turn it down for the fact he wants to play on a competitive team. His status will be one of many questions as Spring Training is only about seven-eight weeks away.***The Sun's David Ste...
Brewers Not Interested In Brian Roberts
2008-06-09 15:06:00
According to Ken Rosenthal today: Here's a deal that makes sense: Brian Roberts for Rickie Weeks. The Brewers, who recently had two scouts watching the Orioles, are interested in Roberts, but it remains to be seen whether they are ready to give up on Weeks. Brewers GM Doug Melvin denies the report, stating that his scouts "were watching the Orioles as part of their normal assignments."  The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt has mentioned before that Melvin has always been frank and honest with him, and this is no exception.  Melvin even revealed that the Orioles tried to get the Brewers involved during the spring as competition for the Cubs.

Survey Results: Brian Roberts
2008-03-24 09:55:00
Brian Roberts' name came up often in our recent reader survey.  It's a love/hate thing - people either want more Roberts updates or none at all. The Roberts frustration is not unlike our experiences with Erik Bedard and Johan Santana earlier this winter.  Readers were happy to see those deals finalized; they dragged too long and many of the news items weren't interesting.  One thing I can't do is stop posting updates on the Roberts trade or any other predominant hot stove story.  This site exists to provide the latest trade and signing news.  If you're sick of a certain deal it should be easy to glance at the headline and scroll right past it.

Will Brian Roberts Be Traded?
2008-03-10 17:50:00
Will the Baltimore Orioles trade their marquee 2B Brian Roberts?  O's fans interested in seeing the rebuilding effort continue care, but, more so, the people drafting in AL- and NL-only leagues over the next few weeks want to know even more.  With double-digit HR and 50 SB potential, not to mention a good AVG and lots of run-scoring ability, Roberts is a top tier 2B worthy of a high draft selection and a $30+ bid.  A move to a play-off contending team like the Cubs would only increase those values. Both Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports and Peter Gammons of ESPN believe Roberts is headed for Chicago.  Rosenthal believes it will be by Spring's end, and Gammons reports the only decision left to be made is by Orioles' GM Andy MacPhail on what players he wants. With a trade to the Cubs assumed, who will be the fantasy winners?  (The Cubs win big time like the Mets did with Johan Santana because the team will have further addressed its primary weakness (oBP) without ...
Brian Roberts Rumors
2008-03-10 10:15:00
Ah, Brian Roberts.  The Cubs' talks with the Orioles have stagnated, though the O's still watched a slimmed-down Sean Gallagher on Sunday.  Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times still thinks it gets done by Opening Day.  For now I just have a tidbit to add from the esteemed Peter Gammons in Saturday's blog: The Cubs will eventually get Brian Roberts. Andy MacPhail has to decide whom he wants. But the Cubs are convinced it will happen.
No Recent Brian Roberts Talks
2008-03-07 21:38:00
SI.com's Jon Heyman wrote on Monday that the Cubs and Orioles had resumed talks for Brian Roberts.  However, Cubs GM Jim Hendry came out on Wednesday and said he hadn't had any trade talks for five or six days.  Tonight, the Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec chimes in, confirming Hendry's statement of inactivity. Zrebiec was able to confirm from two sources that the Cubs offered Ronny Cedeno, Sean Gallagher, Donald Veal, and another unknown player for Roberts.  The teams can't agree on the fourth player, and the O's may want a fifth too.  The Orioles are said to like top Cubs' prospects like Jose Ceda, Felix Pie, and Tyler Colvin.  Andy MacPhail is clearly demanding a high price for two years of his second baseman.  Zrebiec also confirms that the Cubs and Orioles have talked about a scenario where outspoken veterans Jason Marquis and Jay Payton are in the deal.  For now, it appears that the Cubs will open the season without Roberts. I'm of the ...
Is Brian Roberts On the Move?
2008-03-05 06:07:00
Brian Roberts is one of the best infielders in Major League baseball. There are not many second baseman that can offer fantasy owners a .290 average, 12 homeruns, 100-plus runs, and 50 stolen bases, but Brian Roberts fits the mold. It is being reported by Sports Illustrated that trade talks are heating up between the Cubs and Orioles. If a deal were to be made, Sean Marshall would likely be involved....
Florida, Angelos and Brian Roberts
2008-03-02 14:51:00
Well, I am currently in Florida now, and I kind of did not do anything yesterday baseball related, as since I left the cold of Maryland, I more or less wanted to enjoy the warm weather here - so I went to the beach and caught the sites of the Tampa area.Right now, I'm getting ready to head out to see the Yankees and Phillies at Legends Field in Tampa. I'll try to have pictures up as soon as I can tonight. The intrepid Ian from Sox and Dawgs (who is kind of my eyes and ears when I have become busy or away) sent me this via email last night about some Oriole news, this time related to Pater Angelos and the Brian Roberts situation...From MLB Trade Rumors:This morning it was reported that the Cubs had two scouts at the Orioles' spring game yesterday to watch Brian Roberts. Now, several people have written in to let us now that Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 is reporting that Peter Angelos has given Andy MacPhail the green light to trade Roberts. It has long been rumored that Angelos might h...
Brian Roberts Auditions For Cubs' Scouts
2008-03-01 10:45:00
Brain Roberts angered pitcher Mark Hendrickson yesterday by stealing a couple of bases. The Florida Marlins starter in Friday's spring game apparently thinks baserunners should lay low during the exhibition season. The Cubs, though, had two scouts in the stands. The New York Times positioned the larceny as Roberts strutting (or shall we say galloping) his stuff for his potential future employers. By Big Mike Glab
Brian Roberts Rumors
2008-02-29 09:40:00
Jeff Zrebiec and Roch Kubatko of the Baltimore Sun are on top of the Brian Roberts rumors.  Let's discuss. The Cubs had two scouts watching Roberts play yesterday, so this thing is still alive and kicking.  The Sun gets the impression that the Mark DeRosa heart surgery does add some urgency for the Cubs.  Perhaps this means they'll concede a little bit extra on their offer. The authors reiterate Ronny Cedeno and Sean Gallagher as part of the deal.  They say the O's might want Jose Ceda or Donald Veal as the third player, and could ask for a fourth as well.  It's been said that the Cubs are unwilling to part with Ceda.  We're probably a few weeks from completion but a deal seems plenty possible.

I plan on creating a new blog "BRobBaltimoreBobbleheadBiscott-i" blog. I plan on posting a picture of something I baked with my BRob bobblehead for each game. I've been thinking about this for a month, and this Thursday is the first Spring Training Game. Ohmygawd! Here I go. It should be fun. I was thinking of baking for each game, but that would be very stressfull. On days when I have more time, I would just bake more biscotti/brownies/cookies etc, and take pictures that would last me for a couple days. I hope BRob gets traded to the Cubs. I only have a Baltimore BRob Bobblehead, and it may look stupid if I have a blog that features the Baltimore bobblehead when he works for the Cubs. HOWEVER, as any baker knows, you work with what you have on hand :)
Brian Roberts Rumors
2008-02-20 10:26:00
Here's the latest. Brian Roberts is not in Orioles' camp today; he's gone to a local hospital for a stomach ailment.  Roch Kubatko does not believe he's secretly been traded. Roberts will make no trade demands. Ken Rosenthal says the chances of a Roberts trade "seem to diminish each day."  Rosenthal cites Roberts' relationship with Peter Angelos, and wonders whether the Orioles could wait until July to get more teams involved.  If a Cubs deal does occur, Ronny Cedeno is highly likely to be included. Three days ago, ESPN's Peter Gammons wrote that the Cubs refuse to part with Felix Pie or Jose Ceda for Roberts.  Also, many MLBTR readers have speculated that the Orioles no longer have use for any of the Cubs' outfielders.
Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Brian Roberts
2008-02-19 15:49:00
It seems as though all the players we thought we would be traded this off-season, have been traded, minus one...Brian Roberts. The oft-rumored deal to send Roberts to the Cubs continues to linger. Ken Rosenthal first suggested that Roberts would be a good fit for the Cubs back in early December and Jeff Zrebiec confirmed the Cubs interest. Then the deal may have been dead, with the O's asking price too high and by the end of January Gordon Wittenmyer suggested Cubs had turned their focus to Marlon Byrd. Then according to Jon Heyman a deal appeared imminent. Rosenthal thought the O's insisting on the inclusion of Felix Pie was a deal-breaker. But then Baltimore acquired Adam Jones and Chris De Luca noted the deal might have life. But now Heyman wonders if the proposed package(s) is not enough and if Peter Angelos will nix a deal, as Roberts is one of his favorite players. Now that Spring Training has begun we have to wonder if a deal can still get done. let's take a look at how th...
Brian Roberts Rumors
2008-02-13 09:03:00
Here's the latest on the Brian Roberts situation.  From Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times: Cubs want the switch-hitting leadoff hitter, are ready to deal from a pretty deep hand of prospects and would like to have Roberts in camp by the time the full squad reports next week. But nobody at Fitch Park seems to be counting on that, given the teeth-pulling, teeth-gnashing nature of talks with the glacial O's. And then there's Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun: Will Roberts be the next former Oriole?  Perhaps, but maybe not right away. President of baseball operations Andy MacPhail has engaged in trade talks about the All-Star second baseman for months, so it won't be surprising if he pulls something off soon. But there's really no rush. To sum it up: there's nothing new, nothing imminent.  Wittenmyer also dismisses a rumor that the Cubs are after Joe Nathan.  The Cubs have the pieces they need to field a strong team, if they use them properly.
Next on MacPhail's trading block, Brian Roberts?
2008-02-10 13:49:00
At Friday's news conference announcing Erik Bedard's trade, Baltimore Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail acknowledged that Roberts' situation was a "logical question that will come next." "We are going to evaluate every opportunity that comes to us, and if we think at the end of the day it makes sense to move forward, we're going to move forward," said MacPhail who has acquired 10 players for Bedard and shortstop Miguel Tejada. "We want to win. We're serious about wanting to win. Sometimes you have to pay the price for that. You have to be willing to make the short-term sacrifice. But being stuck in neutral and staying where we were, that to me was very untenable, very unattractive."Like Bedard, Roberts is two years shy of free agency and has shown apprehension about being on a rebuilding team. Roberts also could yield three or four players, fitting MacPhail's blueprint of getting quality and quantity in return according to the Baltimore Sun.
Brian Roberts Rumors
2008-02-10 13:11:00
Who needs a Brian Roberts update?  You do, of course. ESPN's Buster Olney: I've heard that Andy MacPhail is very much in favor of the notion of dealing Roberts to the Cubs, for the right price. Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun quotes MacPhail as calling the Roberts situation a "logical question that will come next."  Trading him now certainly fits into MacPhail's all-out rebuilding plan; he's their last valuable veteran commodity.  Talks with the Cubs are expected to drag into spring as the teams decide which young pitchers and outfielders make sense, if any.  Zrebiec cautions that the O's might keep Roberts for now and trade him in July, though. Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune notes that people close to Roberts say he'd waive his no-trade clause to come to Chicago.  His salary would not pose a payroll problem for the Cubs, and Jim Hendry has approval to add a few more players before camp.
Brian Roberts Rumors
2008-02-09 12:14:00
Some of you are sick of it, some of you are clamoring for any kind of tidbit.  Here's the latest on the Brian Roberts to the Cubs possibility. Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times says Roberts is "back atop the Cubs' wish list."  He says the Cubs are hopeful about their chances, but believes it would take most of Spring Training to hammer out the details.  The Orioles' reported insistence on Felix Pie might lessen now that they have Adam Jones.  Seems that if these talks fall apart, it could be because the Orioles decided to extend Roberts' contract and keep him as the face of the franchise (a long shot). Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald says the Cubs remain interested and GM Jim Hendry hopes to chat with Andy MacPhail before Wednesday.  Miles' source indicates that the Cubs and Orioles haven't really gotten into specifics on the Roberts trade talks.  Miles doesn't expect Pie or Tyler Colvin to be involved.
Cubs/Brian Roberts Update
2008-02-05 10:23:00
Buster Olney has the latest on the Cubs' talks to acquire second baseman Brian Roberts.  According to Olney: Sources involved in Baltimore's trade talks with Chicago expressed confidence that at some point, the Orioles and Cubs will finish the proposed Brian Roberts deal. Olney says Sean Gallagher would be the centerpiece of the deal.  On February 3rd, ESPN's Jayson Stark said Gallagher or Sean Marshall would be included, but beyond that nothing has been decided.
Stark On The Brian Roberts Talks
2008-02-03 02:02:00
The sidebar of Jayson Stark's recent column gets into the Brian Roberts situation a bit.  Stark says: According to teams that have spoken to the Cubs and Orioles, they still haven't settled on any of the specifics. The Orioles would get back a starting pitcher -- either Sean Gallagher or Sean Marshall. But beyond that, nothing is particularly concrete. Stark also talked to a baseball man who doubts Felix Pie would be in the trade, a sentiment shared by Ken Rosenthal.  It makes sense that a Roberts deal would have its own complications - after all, it's taken over two months for the Orioles to trade Erik Bedard.

Brian Roberts Deal Dead?
2008-01-12 17:30:00
A trusted emailer wrote in to tell me about a report today from Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio 1000.  According to Levine, Brian Roberts is no longer available.  The Orioles were apparently asking for Tyler Colvin or Felix Pie plus multiple pitchers, and the Cubs wouldn't do it. Levine says the Cubs may turn their attention to the Rangers' Marlon Byrd or free agent Jon Lieber.

Brian Roberts-Yea or Nay?
2007-12-19 20:00:00
I didn't do it ... OR DID I? Some Cub fans were clamoring after Brian Roberts earlier this month, saying how he would be a good fit and added speed to this ballclub. I was hoping that somehow the Cubs could pull off a trade to get Roberts and Bedard, it was high atop my Christmas wishlist, up there with a Wii and a GPS navigator. Then, the Mitchell Report came. While some names weren't much of a surprise, I'll admit I didn't expect to see Brian Roberts on there (although nothing in baseball should be much of a shock anymore). And, unlike some cowards, he was man enough to admit what he did (although I still don't buy all this "I did just one shot" or "I only did it for two days" crap) "In 2003, when I took one shot of steroids, I immediately realized that this was not what I stood for or anything that I wanted to continue doing. I never used steroids, human growth hormone or any other performance-enhancing drugs prior to or since that single incident. I can honestly say before ...

Orioles' Second Baseman Brian Roberts On the Anita Marks Show on ESPN 1300
2007-12-12 18:44:00
Orioles? second baseman appeared on the Anita Marks Show on Tuesday afternoon and he co-hosted it with the host, Anita Marks for about two hours. In town doing some community service and public relations events, he chatted about a myriad of topics; mostly centered on baseball and the Baltimore Orioles? roster, but took time to delve into other topics. Thanks to the magic of TiVo, computer equipment, and a digital recorder, I was able record the show while sleeping and then transfer it into a sound file before I left for work. I just got done listening to it, and here?s a brief wrap-up of what was discussed. Talked about his community work, the events of the Holiday Party and the Orioles helping area families, and taking them on a shopping spree.Talked about his height, and being a smaller guy in baseball; however, size does not matter --- heart does.Anita asked if he?s been in touch with some of the players since the season has concluded, he ...
MLB Rumors: Erik Bedard, Miguel Tejada & Brian Roberts
2007-12-11 13:49:00
Following up on my post last night about the four-player trade for Erik bedard, I checked the local papers this morning for any additional information.  The Cincinnati ones had no new baseball stories since December 9th.  However, Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun offers this update on the leading suitors for each of the Orioles' three big players. At this point, it appears the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners have emerged as the leading contenders for Bedard. The Houston Astros have been the most aggressive suitor for Tejada, and the Chicago Cubs have honed in on Roberts. While Mr. Zrebiec does not mention the specific names I heard yesterday (Joey Votto, Homer Bailey and Josh Hamilton), he does include the Reds as one of the leading suitors.  Maybe that 75% figure mentioned yesterday is as solid as it gets in the trade rumor mongering.
MLB Rumors: Erik Bedard, Miguel Tejada, Brian Roberts
2007-12-07 12:42:00
With the Twins still unable to decide if trading one season of Johan Santana is worth potentially 20+ seasons of other less-paid players, the focus will be on Erik Bedard of the Baltimore Orioles and his more marquee teammates.  Here is what the Baltimore Sun writes-up as a summary of the team's position on dealing any of those marquee names. According to team and industry sources, MacPhail would prefer to move other pieces first, such as Tejada, and trade Roberts as the final - not the first - part of the offseason rebuilding plan. To deal Roberts, the Cubs also likely would need to part with more than just young pitcher Sean Gallagher and another prospect, according to a team source. ...a package headed by light-hitting shortstop Adam Everett and outfielder Luke Scott is not close to what it's going to take to pry Tejada from the Orioles. One team source agreed with the assessment that the Mariners have emerged as one of the front-runners to land Bedard, with young center ...
MLB Rumors: The Latest On Johan Santana and Erik Bedard (Brian Roberts, too
2007-12-06 15:38:00
My spidersense tells me the mania surrounding Johan Santana is subsiding.  Whether this is because the Twins are getting cold feet or the Red Sox offer was more bluff than real, I can't say.  Regardless, here is some of the latest information surrounding Johan Santana along with Option 1A, Erik Bedard, with a splash of a Brian Roberts trade. Gordon Edes says the Red Sox are no closer to landing Santana but qualifies that as a success as the Venezuelian did not end-up in pinstripes.  That is reasonable given the Red Sox keep the chips they offered.  At this poiint, the Yankees could say the same about Santana not landing in Boston, too. Dave Lennon believes the Mets are back in the Santana discussions and have offered a variety of packages around "outfielders Carlos Gomez or Fernando Martinez and pitchers Mike Pelfrey or Philip Humber, combined with more secondary prospects."  Unfortunately, the Twins appear to be fixated on SS Jose Reyes being included in a...
Cubs Aggressively Pursuing Brian Roberts
2007-12-06 04:40:00
UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 10:03pm: ESPN Radio 1000's Bruce Levine checks in to add that Ronny Cedeno would likely be involved in a Roberts deal. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 9:39pm: ESPN's Amy Nelson says Hill is not part of the Roberts talks.  Marshall, Gallagher, Felix Pie, and Donald Veal may be in the mix though. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 8:17pm: ESPN's Steve Phillips says the Orioles "would get Rich Hill and Sean Marshall" for Roberts.  Not sure if that means the Cubs offered it.  Seems like a lot, but I am an unabashed Rich Hill fan. FROM 12-5-07 at 5:31pm: Dan Connolly and Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun are reporting that the Cubs are aggressively pursuing the Orioles' Brian Roberts. A three player deal is on the table, so I assume the Cubs would send two players over.  It's known that they'd send a starting pitcher, but we don't have names yet.  The authors note that the Orioles have been fond of Rich Hill and Sean Gallagher in the past.  Keep in mi...
