9 More Interesting Bridges From Around The World. The Millau Viaduct:The tallest vehicular bridge in the world - The Millau Viaduct is a large cable-stayed road-bridge designed by the structural engineer Michel Virlogeux and British architect Norman Foster. Its a part of the A75-A71 autoroute axis from Paris to Béziers, formally dedicated on 14 December 2004, inaugurated the day after and opened to public two days later. What makes it special is the fact that its slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower with its one of its mast's summit at 343 meters (1,125 ft) and only 38 m (125 ft) shorter than the Empire State Building. Apart from this, its construction surpassed three world records: the highest pylons in the world, the highest mast in the world and the highest road bridge deck in the world. Scheduled for completion in December 2009 the Chenab Bridge in the Reasi District of Jammu and Kashmir (India) will be 359 meters (1,180 ft) high, and its likely that Millau Viaduct will loose i...

Pervaiz Munir Alvi American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) every year puts out a very beautiful calendar on bridges all over the world. However there has never been any bridge from Pakistan on this calendar, and there are reasons for that. Pakistan in the last six decades has not built a bridge of any aesthetic or architectural value. Most of the new major bridges are of the economic variety built for the roads out of pre-cast concrete boxes or beams, or of plate girders that any one hardly notices driving over. Also since rivers are not used for navigation like they are in the developed world, the bridge spans are not very large or high. Therefore there is no need of high super structures like one sees in the case of Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or other structures like that all over the world. On the other hand rail traffic requires heavier bridges than does the road traffic. Again unfortunately Pakistan Railway has hardly built any new rail lines since the British perio...

Bridges [16]: Budapest Chain bridge
2008-05-29 17:35:00
One of the famous bridges of Europe - and justifiably so. During our recent holiday, I crossed this bridge for the second time in my life, and I am still impressed by it. The Szechenyi Chain Bridge, to give it its full name, is a suspension bridge that spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest, the western and eastern sides of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Budapest, and was opened in 1849. The bridge was designed by the English engineer William Tierney Clark in 1839, after Count István Széchenyi's initiative in the same year, with construction supervised locally by Scottish engineer Adam Clark (no relation). It is a larger scale version of William Tierney Clark's earlier Marlow Bridge, across the River Thames in Marlow, England (information from wikipedia).

*_Gateshead Millennium Bridge - England_* Image: http://funlok.info/2008/r/03/wm-ib-001.jpg Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and engineered by Gifford, the bridge takes its place at the end of a line of distinguished bridges across the River Tyne, including the Tyne Bridge and Robert Stephenson's High Level Bridge. Linking Gateshead with Newcastle via Gateshead Quays (described as one of the best places in Europe by Tony Blair) and Newcastleâ?™s Quayside, the bridge not only serves a functional purpose as the River Tyneâ?™s only foot and cycle bridge, but its grace and engineering attract people from all over the world. Image: http://funlok.info/2008/r/03/wm-ib-002.jpg In 1996 Gateshead Council launched a competition to find a bridge that would link developments on both sides of the River Tyne and also complement the existing six bridges crossing the river. There were over 150 entries. Gateshead residents voted for their favourite design from a shortlist of leading archit...

Timberlake e Jeff Bridges juntos em «The Open Road»Há outro cantor no elencoO cantor/actor Justin Timberlake vai protagonizar com Jeff Bridges o filme «The Open Road», noticia a agência Reuters. Stanton, Lovett Join Bridges, Timberlake on The Open Road
2008-03-25 08:51:00
His Alien co-star Sigourney Weaver just got cast in Crazy on the Outside, and now 81-year-old Harry Dean Stanton is keeping up his well-established profile by co-starring in The Open Road, a drama starring Jeff Bridges, Justin Timberlake, Kate Mara, Mary Steenburgen, and (another new addition) Lyle Lovett. According to The Hollywood Reporter: Stanton will play the grandfather of Timberlake's character, a young man trying to reconcile with his father (Bridges) as he heads home to his ill mother's bedside. Lovett will play a Memphis bartender who lends a helpful ear to Timberlake. Writer-director Michael Meredith (Three Days of Rain) is shooting the project in Louisiana and other Southern locales. Between Lovett, Timberlake, and Stanton, this movie has quite the musical contingent. It's hard to say at this point how good or bad this movie will be, but I tend to agree with Roger Ebert when he says that "no movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supportin...

Bridges to Nowhere...
2008-03-10 04:46:00
I am horribly afraid of heights. To say that I suffer from acrophobia is a gross understatement. At times, it can be comical. I remember walking a trail in Mohican State Park years ago with a fellow ghost hunter. We found ourselves on an abandoned stretch of trail and there was a small bridge ahead. Over half the planks were missing. It spanned probably all of seven feet, with a two-foot drop to the water below, which may have been two feet deep at most. I was shaking, terrified, as I made three separate attempts to cross. It didn't help that she was laughing the whole time.Still, I love the beauty of bridges. Not modern concrete slabs with no character, but old bridges. They have a certain charm... a thoughtfulness of design that is absent in our modern world. We spend far too much time concentrating on our destinations instead of the journey now. That could explain our carelessness about history. Why we destroy old bridges, buildings, and landmarks without batting an eyelash. In fa...

Building Bridges
2008-03-07 22:20:00
Most of my friends have been divorced two or three times. I've been divorced once. My new husband has been divorced once. We made a commitment to make our second marriage work. And, it was hard. We were well into our new marriage before we realized that a relationship is a lot of work.Like most of us, I went into my first marriage with the belief that my husband was suppose to solve all my problems. He entered thinking that I had no purpose on life, except to make him hot and happy. It was a doomed to fail.Building BridgesIn every relationship, there must be open communication, communication of your dreams, hopes, fears and insecurities. If you cannot communicate with your partner, explore the reasons why, right from the outset. Don't leave it until it's too late. Don't leave your feelings bottled up until you implode in frustration, or the feelings spill over and cause irreparable damage to your relationship. The discussions should be conducted over dinner, a stroll in the pa...

Mr. Wolfensohn's keynote is entitled "Beyond East-West, North-South - Peace and prosperity in a four speed world."Ayala Corporation CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala gave the opening remarks and Wolfensohn's introduction was given by World Bank Philippines Country Director Bert Holfman.--Mr. Wolfensohn just gave his talk and while it was insightful, he was barely audible. :(--PHINMA President Ramon R. del Rosario, Jr. is the first reactor. His reaction to the keynote is rather tied to the issues the Philippines are encountering right now-- how corruption in a country can derail development. I like how he points out that how long can we accept "stability" as a reason to keep silent on corruption on high levels. He's all for...

Gene Bridges on the Holy Water Debate
2008-02-05 21:53:00
Gene Bridges, from Triablogue recently had this to say about my use of Scripture in the holy water debate. I would like to respond to him in full. Hopefully, this can remain a charitable discussion. Normally, I would reserve comment for after the debate, but given DA has been helping Nick in the Holy Water debate, and that fact that DA has yet to actually, you know, exegete any of the texts in his list of Scriptures allegedly justifying the use of holy water in the NT church, I couldn't resist.Just to be clear, all of the arguments in the formal debate itself are mine. He has only "helped me" insofar as he defended my opening statement against others (such as yourself) who were commenting on the debate while it was taking place.Nick writes, responding to TF:Turretinfan: If we were trying to make unclean spirits clean, sprinkling holy water on them might make sense. But we are not, so it doesn?t. Ritual uncleanness for which the OT prescribed washing is unlike spiritual uncleanness,...
