Trafficking in Disruption: Supporters of Vancouver?s Cocaine and Heroin Inj
2008-10-24 22:50:00 I have an insight. The block party Insite supporters held yesterday afternoon was an attempt to embarrass Canada?s freshly re-elected Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Insite supporters — particularly executives and staff at the PHS Community Services Services Society which operates Insite — do not want Harper to shut down this space where junkies in Vancouver ...

2008-08-24 02:20:00 During the Olympics in Beijing, the Chinese media asked British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell tough questions about how he intended to clean up the squalor of homelessness and drug abuse on Vancouver?s impoverished Downtown Eastside before hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. They were legitimate questions. The Chinese media had obviously been ...

Blue-Scarf Housing ?STANDS? Spread to 13 Vancouver Street Corners as 2010 O
2008-04-26 00:37:00 Can’t people think of a color other than blue for a scarf? I thought the Blue Scarves were conservatives who meet at the Vancouver Public Library on Thursday evenings to discuss the threat to modernity by Islamo-fascism. But now people on the political Left are wearing blue scarves too, as they stand on Vancouver street ...

McDonald’s v. the British Columbia Human Rights Commission
2008-04-17 11:24:00 I am not a lawyer, and I do not play one on television, but it seems like to me that a statement like this could be a cause for action, Ezra Levant: Don’t eat at McDonald’s on South West Marine Drive in Vancouver. Listen. I love McDonald’s, both for their food and for what they stand for philosophically. I thought that Super Size Me was a piece of anti-capitalist, anti-beef propaganda. But when you’re in Vancouver, skip the McDonald’s on Marine Drive. That’s because the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal has ruled that one of the employees there has a human right not to wash her hands when working in their kitchen I do not patronize McDonald’s, and will not.  However McDs has a hard earned reputation for cleanliness.  McD’s earned their reputation and are entitled to the hard won fruits of their labors.    The British Columbia Human Rights Commission admits to knowing absolutely nothing about running a restaurant, or foo...

For No-Boarders in British Columbia, It’s No Bindings, No Problem
2008-02-15 07:23:00 By JESSE HUFFMANFeb 15, NY TimesTHREE miles into the Kootenay Range backcountry by snowmobile, I stood alongside 50 other riders, gathered at the bottom of a wide and untracked sub-alpine run. The mid-January snowpack was so deep in the Interior Mountains of British Columbia that the effects of logging were buried beneath 180 inches of powder — the downed trees, stumps and rocks all transformed by the bounty of snow into a snowboarder’s paradise. The conditions were extraordinary, and the crowd included Travis Rice, a professional snowboarder and multiple gold medalist in the X Games. But on this overcast Saturday, the draw was the third annual Greg Todds Memorial No-Board Race, and the challenge was simply to get down the hill — without bindings.No-boarding is a young sport that replaces traditional snowboard bindings with a knobbed polymer traction pad and a heavy-duty bungee rope, which transform a snowboard into a no-board.Read more this news quotephoto: A no-boarder execut...

Extreme Weather to Become Norm in British Columbia, Canada
2007-11-14 02:29:00 A windstorm that blew through much of southern British Columbia on the holiday weekend continues to be felt as tens of thousands of residents entered their second, and in some cases, third day without electricity. The storm, which whipped some places with winds exceeding in some places exceeding 130 kilometres per hour, plunged more than 190,000 homes into darkness, disrupted most forms of water and air traffic to Vancouver Island, and blocked roads with falling trees. Wild winter weather appears to be developing into a pattern in B.C., increasingly stormy weather patterns are here to stay. This is why it's important to prepare today for future storms.

British Columbia: Baseball Hotbed
2007-10-13 21:58:00 British Columbia: Baseball Hotbed With Colorado Rockies’ pitcher Jeff Francis currently in the post-season spotlight, it got me to thinking of another stud Canadian Rockies (former) ballplayer - Larry Walker - and why all these new studs (Jason Bay, Adam Loewen, Rich Harden, Justin Morneau) are coming from beautiful British Columbia. First off, let’s talk about the aforementioned Jeff Francis. To give you loyal MUD readers a sense of just how scarce it has been for Canadian pitchers participating in baseball?s post season, here is something for you to think about. With the Rockies’ win in Game 1 against Arizona, Jeff Francis posted his second consecutive playoff victory of the current season as a starter for the Colorado Rockies. It also made him the all-time leader in post season wins by a Canadian. With his first playoff win last week against the Philadelphia Phillies, the 26-year-old southpaw pulled into a tie for all-time post-season wins by a Canadi...

Wreck Beach, Vancouver, British Columbia
2007-04-21 01:41:00 Named for a hulking, wrecked vessel that once sat on the sand, Wreck Beach is the shore of choice for Vancouver students. Just several hundred steps below the University of British Columbia, the three-mile-long beach is a wildlife and nesting area for both bald eagles and bald bodies. Other sections of the beach assume a more carnival-like atmosphere. One stretch on the beach known as Vendors' Row is a one-stop shop for souvenirs, refreshments and the ever-important sunscreen. This 7.8 kilometers long wilderness-like beach, which follows a promontory below an emerald-green forested, 200-foot high, cliff system weathered to beauty akin the White cliffs of Dover, is Canada's first and largest, legal, clothing-optional beach and is a Mecca to visitors from around the world!Over 500,000 visitors annually find their way down the many sylvan trails to the glistening sands and sparkling waters where the mighty Fraser River waters mingle with those of the Strait of Georgia and English Bay....

FUMO INVISIBILE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA
