Lord Paul Swarj Under British Police Investigation
2009-10-12 23:45:00 I have written of the Sathya Sathya Sai Baba-implicated and high-profile British Labour Government Minister, Tony McNulty MP, and police investigations into allegations of rorting the British taxpayer. The very wealthy Lord Paul of Marylebone (See Wikipedia note below) is now under police investigation for the same reason. In probing Lord Paul, the British media might like, while investigating, to see whether Paul has been assisting the Sathya Sai Organization, as has been Tony McNulty. Both have long been powerfully influential in the British Labour Party.
Strong results for Barons British Heritage and Classic Cars sale
2009-09-23 18:48:00 Sandown Park was a busy place on September 8th, as buyers made their way to Barons? British Heritage and Classic Cars sale. And, when the hammer fell on the final lot, over 80% of the cars on offer had found new homes, with spirited bidding pushing a number of lots well over estimate. Highlights included the LHD 1959 MG TF1500, which sold for a whisker under £23,000, while a lively battle ensued between bidders in the hall and no less than seven on the phone for the 1961 MGA 1600 FHC (£9,266). And a magnificent 1961 MkII Jaguar achieved £31,231, demonstrating yet again that beautifully-presented cars have a ready market. The sale also saw one of the oldest cars that Barons? has ever sold go under the hammer ? a sprightly 1918 Buick E-Six-49 which sold for £13,161.50. The sale was a very positive introduction to Barons for the company?s new Director of Business Development, Julian Shoolheifer, former head of Sotheby?s and Cheffins? motor car departments. Barons? Managing Directo...

British Sports Cars and American Hot Rods Travel to VT This Weekend
2009-09-16 17:08:00 I just posted a few photos from the 2007 British Invasion on Flickr to give you a small sampling of what this car show is about. As mentioned in my September 6 blog entry below, there will be hundreds of beautiful British cars from old to new. The British Invasion web site has more details. My friends from the Classic Bike Experience will be there as well to display some British Motorcycles. The Boston Sunday Globe named this event as their number one choice for "Best 10 things to do within a day's drive of Boston." And the Vermont Chamber of Commerce has named it several years in a row as a Top Ten Event in Vermont. The event will be held at the Stowe Events Field on Weeks Hill Road, just off Route 108. It runs this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On the same weekend, there's a very large street rod show at the Champlain Expo Center put on by the National Street Rod Association. British Invasion Car Show, Stowe, September 18 - 20
2009-09-06 21:11:00 A boy and his car.My first car was a 1959 MGA. I bought it for $350 and sold it a few months later, a deal I had to make with my parents to get them to acquiesce to what I thought was one of the greatest ideas of all time: me in a sleek, fast, and nimble car to try out my inestimable driving skillI sold it for the same amount I had bought it for and I broke even except for gas plus all the polish, wax, and other chemicals I put on or in it. I enjoyed - no, make that - LOVED, driving the MG that summer. I spent hours each day driving or working on that car. It has rusted out rocker panels which I carefully scrapped out and painted rust-proof silver. With a meticulousness worthy of a new category of dementia, I sanded each wheel and sprayed them in short stages with the leftover paint from the rocker panel project. There was not one run in the paint. Of course, it took me more than a week of light spraying to achieve that. And I had to mask the tires each time to keep overspray off th...

British react negatively to police enforcement mindset
2009-09-04 11:58:00 The following incident is extremely unlikely since the range of police laser is inherently limited. The jet in question would have had to have been closer than the treeline in the photo. And it would have been both illegal and dangerous for the police officer to have used his laser anyway. But it does highlight the growing public disgust in Britain for police enforcement measures that rely on unmanned measures (photo radar) and equipment with inherent limitations and accuracy only in very narrow scenarios (traffic laser). Many feel that there is a disproportionate reliance on these tools. An increasing number of examples showing their technical faults as well as the poor training and agressive methods of many public officials highlight these weaknesses. So this article is in itself "true British laconic style". But the question on our minds is when will the Brits stand up to these Gestapo police methods and demand their r...
Google Books Ties Up With British Company Interead, Amazon Accusing Google
2009-09-04 06:42:00 A British company called Interead (which makes an e-book reader, COOL-ER) has tied up with Google and thus becomes the first e-book store outside the US to partner with Google Books. It will now get to showcase over a million out-of-copyright books scanned by Google on its website Coolerbooks.com which can be accessed for free. According to the press release this makes Coolerbooks.com the largest e-book store in the world. Amazon Inc joins the Google rivals While things are going good for Google that doesn’t mean its lawyers are going to get any less sleepless nights. Amazon.com Inc is openly encouraging the US Supreme Court to reject the settlement that might take place between Google Inc and Authors Guild. The settlement is the result of a lawsuit filed by the Authors Guild 4 years ago on the count of copyright infringement. As a result, Google has agreed to pay USD 125 Million to create a Books Rights Registry. This is a place where authors and publishers can register their wo...

British Cat Is Regular Bus Commuter
2009-08-12 23:37:00 Photo: SWNS.comby Kirsten TaylorEveryone can appreciate the conveniences of public transportation -- even a cat.Susan Finden wasn't sure where her free-spirited kitty would disappear to every day until the local bus drivers in Plymouth, England revealed to her that Casper has been a regular on the No. 3 bus for the last four years! You read that right. Each morning, the Sun reports, Casper lines up with the paying passengers to await the 10:55 morning service. He takes a seat in the back and enjoys the 11-mile, round-trip route before hopping off to return home. The drivers watch out for the wandering feline and make sure he gets off at the right stop.A spokesman for the bus company says they're happy to let the 12-year-old cat ride for free. After all, he said, "In cat years he's an OAP [Old Age Pensioner] so he'd get a free bus pass anyway."

Did Tom Watson do enough to win the British Open and Camilo Villegas' backh
2009-07-27 23:12:00 Click here to listen. When asked about Tom Watson's chances of raising the Claret Jug at the 2009 British Open, Jack Nicklaus replied, "It is going to take constant concentration and discipline." The Golden Bear asserted, "whether or not Tom plays well tomorrow, whether or not he wins, it doesn't make a difference."After watching Watson's head held high in spite of the occasional tear being wiped away by the fifty-nine year old legend, one can truly say that Nicklaus could not be further from the truth. With an invitation to play St. Andrews in 2010, Tom will be sixty. This was his swan song. Who knows what will happen tomorrow? Will Watson will be in the same condition and if so, will he even want to play in another Open? Tom mentioned that he isn't anxious to play in another Masters because he doesn't want to be the "memorial" player in the field, applauded by the crowd as the old guy on the tee. Can you blame him?Although in five events on the Champions Tour, Watson has made e...

Ailsa Golf Course at Turnberry Resort, a British Open legend
2009-07-21 17:55:00 The 2009 British Open is now in the books and golfers are looking forward to the PGA Championship, which is hurried along in order to make more room in the schedule to accomodate the $10 million Fed Ex Cup. The season is going by way too fast for this lover of the sport! I cannot watch four days of phenomenal golf without ever dreaming about what it would be like to visit Turnberry Resort, and play golf on the revered Ailsa Course (pronounced "ale-sa") where Tom Watson nearly made history for the sixth time in his career! I'm sure though, that my score would not reflect my true potential! Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson's 1977 "Duel in the Sun" brought Ailsa to public view as a golfing destination but it has been the stuff of legends way before that! Read Robert Burns' poem, Tam O'Shanter, and you will begin to immerse yourself in the folklore that surrounded Scotland as early as 1790.The wind blew as 'twad blawn its last; The rattling showers rose on the blast; The speedy gleams th...

Could Tiger Woods' win at ATT foretell problems at the British Open?
2009-07-13 22:17:00 Click here to listen.Tiger Woods has made it a habit to win two weeks before a major tournament this season. He won Palmer's, Nicklaus' and his own event in this fashion and, because of this, fans are waiting to see if this streak will cause him to falter during the third major of the year.Is it possible that Tiger Woods could fall prey to the "middle of the pack" at the British Open?Prior to the 2009 Masters, Angel Cabrera's best finish this year was a tie for thirteenth at the Northern Trust Open. He was cut from the Arnold Palmer Invitational where Tiger Woods solidly annihilated the competition. Cabrera's stats are also not that impressive: he currently ranks 187th in driving accuracy and only 140th in greens-in-regulation. It is only because of his major win that Cabrera now ranks twentieth in money leaders on the PGA Tour.Golf afficionados can now say that they have heard of Lucas Glover but, prior to a strong 2009 season and a win at the U.S. Open, Glover had only two to...

British blues
2009-04-27 21:00:00 One of the main reasons that I invited my online friend Ron Moorby to contribute to this blog is because I wanted his take on British blues. I have been a fan of British blues since I started listening to music, but I kind of chuckle because I came to it in the opposite direction from must American music fans. Many, not all, but a lot of blues fans first heard the British blues and then back tracked their way to the classic bluesmen and then maybe to the modern blues musicians. I was hearing the blues in Louisiana, being played by the classic bluesmen in the sixties and seventies when I first started paying attention to music.I was surprised to find out that there were blues musicians from other countries who had mastered the blues. I remember hearing John Mayall and the Blues Breakers and thinking, Wow, those guys are good. And now I keep digging deeper and deeper into the British blues scene learning more and more about the history of the blues in the UK.According to Wikipedia; The B...

British Born Muslims Supply Al Qadea With Weapons
2009-03-09 22:54:00 No surprise here. The three along with a Muslim convert were part of a Birmingham terror cell whose leader was convicted of plotting to kidnap and behead a British soldier on video, the Old Bailey was told.Using the earthquake in Pakistan in late 2005 as a cover, the three collected funds from their community on the pretext of sending out humanitarian aid.Instead they diverted the money to buy vital equipment needed by the terrorists to fight coalition forces.Spending tens of thousands of pounds in high street chains such as Aldi, Lidl, Argos, Millets and Maplins, the cell bought outdoor equipment and electrical goods not available over the counter in Pakistan.Among the items were winter clothes, night vision goggles, laser sights, binoculars, compasses, first aid kits, tents, walkie-talkies, mobile phones and other equipment needed to equip the terrorists. They also bought night time cameras and computer equipment for the "AQ media boys" to record the wills of suicide bombers and oth...
