Broadband - Switching To VOIP
2008-06-09 19:19:00 Broadband - Switching To VOIPBy David Collins For years we've relied on the telephone in order to keep in contact with one another, which is particularly useful for those with family in other countries or serving in the forces. Now as technology moves on, so does our method of communicating with each other. Now the trend of communication appears to be switching to the online world, with handsets slowly being phased out by headsets and microphones. With more of us now having access to cheap broadband technology many are now choosing to make the switch to using Voice Over Internet Protocol (or VoIP) in order to make calls. The process seems simple enough; check your connection (and perform a broadband speed test) then download and install one of the many VoIP clients out there. read more

The case against tiered broadband: It?s a drag on the economy!
2008-06-06 05:05:00 I would prefer to not be saddled with tiered broadband from my access provider, but the market dictates that that is what I will have. Unfortunately the Pols want to respond with more regulation instead of opening the market. Without adequate competition, more regulation could easily turn the present broadband duopoly into the broadband ...

How About Some Decent Broadband First?
2008-05-27 13:05:00 This is a party political broadcast on behalf of the Telstra Party. If you think that petrol is expensive, wait until they have a more robust monopoly to provide internet services. Coming soon to your neighbourhood. Crap and expensive telecommunications services. If you don't like it suckers, buy a carrier pigeon. Forget conference calls or video crosses - beaming your hologram interstate for a live chat is closer to becoming a household reality. In what Telstra says is a national first, the telco beamed a mobile three dimensional image of its chief technology officer, Hugh Bradlow, from Melbourne to Adelaide to give a live business presentation.Perhaps he could be beamed into every home, along with Sol so that Australians could throw virtual rocks at them. He could start be telling Australia about why Telstra locks up existing installed technology to provide faster internet to working families as part of their commercial strategy, charges a fortune for their current shonky fraudban...
Singapore HDB ‘lab’ paving the way for broadband vision
2008-05-26 15:52:00 Singapore HDB ‘lab’ paving the way for broadband vision Government agencies linked up in low-key tests to study disruption By WINSTON CHAI (SINGAPORE) Sometime in the near future in a HDB heartland, housewives will be able to download an entire Korean movie in mere minutes , instead of hours. Researchers at Biopolis - a biomedical science research & development hub - will be able to perform complex calculations previously handled by supercomputers on their laptops. Â The main aim of the tests was to determine the most efficient way of extending high-speed fibre-optic cables from their current end-points to individual apartment blocks and office buildings. Â Â All thanks to a new fibre optic network that is being built in Singapore. And four inconspicuous public housing blocks at Boon Keng and Commonwealth may hold the key to realising Singapore’s dream of upgrading to this new ultra-fast broadband highway. Unknown to the public, the humble housing units coll...

Internet Poll Verdict: Indian Broadband connections are expensive?but why ?
2008-05-13 09:13:00 I had set up a poll a fortnight back on this to understand why Indian Internet penetration is lagging behind so much so that a country of size of Hong Kong beats India, even when we out number them in population by over a billion people. Obviously, one of the basic reason is that more than 70% of Indian still live in villages and are dependent on farming with no need of internet as yet what so ever. But what about urban Indians? India has more than 250 million people living in cities, then why is it that we have only 3.5 million broadband connections to show? Here is the Poll Verdict: Out of total of 156 poll participants around 44% felt that Internet connections are expensive. I feel so too.
