Tuning around the 13 MHz broadcast band, Radio Nederland on 13700 kHz being transmitted from Wertachtal in Germany was sounding rather odd. It had a very pronounced echo which made understanding it very difficult (if you could understand Dutch in the first place!)You will note in the brief recording that towards the end the echo becomes less evident and listening over a longer period it was clear that the echo faded in and out. This can only mean one of two possible things:(1) The echo was being caused by transmitting the same material, slightly delayed, from a second transmitter site; or(2) The echo was being caused by receiving duplicated copies of the same material, delayed by some other means. As far as was apparent, there were no other transmitters being used on that frequency by Radio Nederland, though there was meant to be a transmitter in China on the same frequency which might have been erroneously relaying the programme by mistake. But the cause is more likely to be some...
The public broadcasting scam
2011-03-08 19:39:00
As the battle over taxpayer funding of public broadcasting heats up, the esteemed Newton Minow weighs in with this defense of public television and radio: As a nation, we support public broadcasting for the same reasons that we support public libraries, public parks, public schools and public hospitals. Why public libraries when we have bookstores? Why public parks when we have country clubs? Why public schools when we have private schools? Why public hospitals when we have private hospitals? Sounds good, But, Newt, one big difference is that when we go into our public libraries, we don't find only books by and for liberals. Like Steve Chapman, I find it useful to listen to NPR, but to discover what's...
Round Casting – The New Face Of Broadcasting; Amit Khanna, Chairman,
2010-08-14 09:50:00
Recently, at the CII conference on Digital Media, Amit Khanna, Chairman, Reliance Big Entertainment, introduced a new term “round casting”. We had a chat with Mr. Khanna regarding the same, and this is what he had to say to us. What is “Round Casting”? To begin with, it is not an existing term but rather just a term I coined. As we go forward in the digital world, the cloud of data and the device on which this data is consumed will be important factors. There needs to be something to connect the cloud and the device and different companies from both sides have looked at different scenarios. Most observations have reached a conclusion that, people are not only consuming more media, but they are consuming it simultaneously. This is where round casting will play an important role. Round casting will work in two ways. First, it will help to allow transfer of media to different devices  seamlessly. What this means is, if I am I listening to music in my car, as so...

Wireless and the London Olympics
2009-05-06 23:45:00
There is currently much ongoing debate, and some might suggest ensuing debacle, taking place to ensure that there is sufficient radio spectrum available for the London Olympic Games to be held in 2012. However, Wireless Waffle has uncovered the official Government plans for the use of the radio spectrum for the last Olympic Games held in London in 1948. Interestingly, these were before the main legislation relating to the use of the spectrum, the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1949 were brought into power and thus predate any previous attempt to specifically control radio use in the UK. Let us step back to 1948... Much of London was still in ruins and rubble strewn streets were not uncommon. The budget for the games was £600,000, a figure which today would just about pay the salary of the organising committee for about a month. Food was still being rationed (indeed rationing did not end until 1954), King George VI was on the throne and Frankie Laine, Perry Como, Al Jolson and the An...

Broadcasting?
2008-10-01 03:57:00
I was reading online about how someone wanted to get into broadcasting and it made me remember my days in radio broadcasting. I was a DJ for about 10 years but since I worked at mostly smaller stations I did a lot of other jobs at the radio stations as well! I was even a receptionist at one time - I really hated that! But it was a stepping stone to my first DJ job.I believe that radio stations and radio station broadcasting has changed a lot since the time that I was a DJ - although I do think that the more smaller markets still offer some great opportunities for those that want to be in broadcasting. How did I start my DJ career? Well I went to broadcasting school for about 6 months. Then it took me about 2 years before I got my first radio job! In those 2 years I almost gave up hope but I got that first job because one of my co-students worked there and that's how I got the job there. Like I mentioned above, I started off as being the receptionist.I kept saying that I wante...

Last night I did a panel debate with Angelo Petroni of Italy’s public broadcaster RAI, moderated by Endemol’s Andy Ward on the future of mass media in Europe. CTC Media (CTCM): Broadcasting gains in Russia
2008-05-02 07:00:00
"Many of the industries that we think of as 'mature' in the U.S. are still in their infancy in Russia," notes global expert John Christy (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=1980).In- his Forbes International Investment Report (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=1980), he notes, "Advertising is a perfect example. Overall, the Russian ad market is growing at a 25%-30% clip." Here, he looks at CTC Media (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=ctcm) (NASDAQ: CTCM (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=ctcm)), one of the leading TV broadcasters in Russia."In 2007, total advertising spending in Russia was approximately $9 billion versus just $1.1 billion back in 2000. To put things in perspective, consider that in the U.K., Europe’s largest ad market, spending is roughly $22 billion."With more than twice the population of the U.K., Russia’s advertising market is less than half its size. Of course, it will take a very long...

Niger: Radio Station Shut Down for Broadcasting Military Brutalities
2008-04-26 10:40:00
Sahara FM, a privately-owned radio station based in Agadez, the largest city in the northern part of Niger, was on April 22, 2008, shut down indefinitely by the media regulator, the High Communications Council (CSC) for allegedly "inciting ethnic hatred and undermining the morale of the Army". Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA)'s correspondent reported that the closure followed a complaint by the authorities over broadcast of testimonies of victims of military brutalities on Sahara FM between April 13 and April 17. Several of the victims claimed in a series of interviews, that they had suffered brutalities at the hands of Nigerien soldiers. The complaint was filed by the Agadez Governor and Commissioner of Police and on April 18, Raliou Ahmed Assaleh, Director of Sahara FM and correspondent for Radio France International (RFI) in Agadez, was summoned to Niamey to answer the accusations The soldiers had been deployed in Agadez's region to curb the ongoing rebellion ...
a machine for broadcasting
2008-04-25 14:51:00
So apparently twitter is where I find all my inspiration now. Yesterday Burak Arikan shared a link on an interesting use of said microblogging platform that deserves mention. Andy Stanford-Clark, a "Master Inventor" for IBM has wired his home automation system to post updates to twitter. Earlier this year the net was abuzz with news of pothos the plant that posted to twitter when it was thirsty for water (see the MAKE post on that project) and now we have an example of an object/entity broadcasting information about a variety of states. As illustrated by the screen capture above, Andy's house posts data about water and power usage, telecommunications and temperature updates and also issues status reports pertaining to lighting and security systems. The architectural implications of this type of ambient intelligence aggregation are quite clear but what really interests me is the idea of objects using the same networks as people to communicate. I wonder if Andy's house ever asks And...

Public service broadcasting - don't text in your votes
2008-04-15 21:10:00
Funny really. The only time television has ever really cared about voting was when it offered an opportunity to drain money from audiences. When it comes to public policy, broadcasting follows the long British tradition of deferring decisions to appointed boards of scrupulously selected, upstanding gentlefolk. God forbid those board members be politicised, or lured into some broader political process. It is hardly the fault of Ofcom that when it comes to options for dishing out public money the preferred solutions of boss Ed Richards are expressed like this: "Ofcom's content board could do it, although I would not necessarily recommend that. The BBC Trust could become a broader funding agency, or you could set up something new called the Public Service Trust or Agency," he said.Political, democratic or voting based solutions are not on the table to decide on subsidy allocations aimed at producing television to encourage and support what exactly?Er, precisely the kind of civic activit...
Public service broadcasting 101 (Give us the cash or Gordon Ramsay replaces
2008-04-14 22:15:00
I haven’t put pen to paper on the Ofcom PSB review. The review is thorough but transparent, the best take on it is from Ofcomwatch - I’ve added a link to a pdf of Stigler’s seminal article. Nobel winner George Stigler famously observed [pdf] that firms often acquire policy or regulation so as to serve their interest, not the public interest.Ofcom’s Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) review looks like it could be headed directly down this path. The regulator paints a dire picture of the future of quality television broadcasting and strongly suggests a state subsidy should be offered. The likely beneficiary? Channel 4.Ofcom say Channel 4 ‘will need greater certainty in its funding model.’‘Greater certainty’ in this context = money. And the likely source? The BBC licence fee.
