While with the Broncos, Horan went to the Pro Bowl in 1988 and was consistently at the top of the AFC and NFL in both Gross and Net punting average.  After spending his college days at Long Beach St., Horan was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons.  He was released and spent his first two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before coming to Denver.  Overall, Horan spent 16 seasons in the NFL, playing for 5 different teams.  In 1993, Horan enjoyed his best season, punting to a net average of 39...
Javon Walker to the Broncos: It?s Personal
2008-06-06 19:32:00
If this doesn’t get you fired up as a Broncos fan you must be in a coma.  Javon Walker left a message for his former team in an interview with ESPN’s Bill Williamson, “it’s personal”.  Walker says he still loves the city of Denver but detests the Broncos organization.  He refers to the orange and ...
Denver Broncos Team Camp Day 3 - News and Notes
2008-06-06 15:24:00
After taking Wednesday off, the Broncos got right back to work on Thursday.  As a sidenote, Mike Shanahan was a guest on Sirius NFL Radio yesterday talking about everything from Javon Walker/Travis Henry to Selvin Young to Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall.  Looking to find some audio for ya but it was an interesting 10 or so minutes.  Back to business..... There are several articles out now talking about the Broncos drive for better character. Of course, these negative piles of journalistic pizzle are taking shots at the Broncos "focus", implying that character only comes into the equation when teams are losing. If you'd like to focus on the stuff going on off the field you can do that HERE and HERE. For me, I am going to focus on the field. The Broncos have cut bait with alot of locker room-cancer guys in the past few months and I support it, even if the the perception is the talent level of the team has dropped. I don't agree, and feel it is the name recognit...
Ebenezer Ekuban - Denver Broncos Player Bio
2008-06-05 22:12:00
Name: Ebenezer Ekuban Height, Weight: 6′4″, 275 Position: Defensive End Age, Experience: 10, 32 College: North Carolina Ebenezer Ekuban joined the Denver Broncos via a trade with Cleveland in 2005, and, when healthy, has been an extremely effective player for the club. In 2005 and 2006, Ekuban only missed one game, tallying 119 tackles and 11 sacks. During a 2007 preseason game, Ekuban tore the Achilles tendon in his right heel, forcing him onto Injured Reserve and ending his season. The Good: 2006 was Ekuban’s best career year, and the best performance by anyone on the D-line that year. In hindsight, it isn’t surprising the defense struggled so much last season. The Broncos’ strongest defenders against the run were all lost before or during 2007 due to injury - Ekuban’s heel, Al Wilson’s neck, and John Lynch’s neck. With Ekuban’s return, expect the defense to get a boost up front. The Bad: With Ekuban’s...
Football is Won in the Trenches - How do the Broncos Measure Up?
2008-06-05 18:25:00
Today, CBS Sportsline has a couple of articles ranking the 32 NFL franchises’ offensive and defensive lines. This is something I’m interested in more than any other comparison any of these national media sites can do - it’s the exact reason why a talented Denver Broncos team failed to deliver in 2007. The top of each article features a graph showing 5 years of sacks and sacks allowed by every NFL team. From 2002 to 2007, only 4 teams (the Packers, Colts, Patriots, and Chargers) have allowed fewer sacks than the Broncos. The defensive line is another story - the Broncos are just below the middle of the pack when it comes to 5 years of DL-attributed sacks. OFFENSE: Denver Broncos Rank 19 out of 32 Best player: LG Ben Hamilton. Weak link: The right tackle spot. The skinny: The Broncos line, which has been a strong point in recent years, wasn’t so good last season. That’s why Denver picked Ryan Clady in the first round. He will start at left tackle. The ...

For his career, Elam owns just about every scoring record in Broncos History, including Games Played, Points Scored, Field Goals Made, Field Goals Attempted, Field Goal Percentage, Extra Points Made and Extra Points Attempted. The Greatest Broncos of All Time....By The Numbers - #0
2008-06-04 19:28:00
He we go.  This series, starting with #0, will take us all the way until the Broncos and Raiders get ready to open the 2008 season.  It is my hope that it will inform, entertain, and create some debate among Broncos fans about different guys that have worn different numbers.  In some cases, there will be no debate because a number was only worn by one person.  That is the case with #0, who saw just one season of activity in a Broncos uniform. The Greatest Bronco To Ever Wear #0 - John Olszewski, FB -- 1962 Johnny 'O' Olszewski was an All-American Running Back at CAL from 1949-1952 before being drafted with the 4th Overall pick in the 1953 NFL Draft by the Chicago Cardinals.  Johnny O played for the Cardinals from 1953 – 1957 earning Pro Bowl honors in both 1953 and 1955 and Western Conference first team honors in 1956. Denver Broncos Team Camp Day 2 - News and Notes
2008-06-04 14:16:00
Rod Smith makes an appearance, Ebenezar Ekuban is getting frustrated and #20 was barely off the back of Travis Henry before another player laid claim. All that and more in today's Team Camp update! No one knows exactly what the future is for Rod Smith but one thing's for sure, it will involve helping the Denver Broncos in some way, shape or form. Smith showed up on the practice field yesterday to help out with the receivers and expressed his love for the Orange and Blue - I love the Denver Broncos, I love the organization, so there ain’t nothing that I wouldn’t do to help. Whether it is on the field or off the field, anything I can do, even just sitting there and talking to some of the guys who are playing receiver now, just giving them little tips and stuff like that. I enjoy that because I know it is going to help them, therefore it helps the organization. There isn’t anything that I wouldn’t do to get us back to where I feel we belong. Smith already...

MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Frank "The Trip" Tripucka
2008-06-04 01:00:00
Would you think a guy who never threw more touchdowns than interceptions in his career would ever get his number retired?  I would have said, "Hell no", before I learned that Mr. Francis M.J. "Frank" Tripucka did.  The Denver Broncos have retired exactly three jerseys in its storied history.  The two obvious ones of John Elway's #7 and Floyd Little's #44 stood out, but then I noticed that ole #18 was retired long before both.  In the coming weeks, Guru will be doing his run down of the greatest Broncos ever to wear certain numbers.  It promises to be a very good series, but I can guarantee that his 18th post will be quite dull.  Since only one guy has ever worn the number.       Frank Tripucka was an All American in 1948 while playing for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, going 9-0-1 that season finishing #2 in the nation.  He was drafted number one overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1949 draft, but the Eagles traded Tr...
The Greatest Broncos Of All Time....By The Numbers - An Introduction
2008-06-03 20:07:00
I'll say it, right off the bat, this isn't what you think.  Well, acually, it is what you think.  A new series here on MileHighReport that will break down the best Broncos of all time, with a twist.  With just under 100 days until the Broncos and Raiders get their respective 2008 regular season's under way I figured I would find a way to pass the time and have some fun. Here's what is going to happen.  I am going to break down the Greatest Broncos to ever wear a certain number.  Starting with #0(yep, someone wore #0 for the Broncos) and going all the way to #99 I'll give you who I think was the best player to ever wear a certain number.  A couple of gimmies, of course, will be the guys that have had their numbers retired.  Other easy ones will be numbers that were only worn by one player.  In that case, consider this a history lesson. Of course, there is going to be a debate and I will include a poll, where applicable, to figure out if yo...

Denver Broncos Team Camp Day 1 - News and Notes
2008-06-03 15:14:00
The news from yesterday wasn't all about Travis Henry. The team was back on the practice field, this time for Team Camp. Looks like the Broncos are testing the waters using John Lynch as a part-time player - On nickel situations, Marlon McCree replaces John Lynch at safety. How they use Lynch this season, along with the other safeties on the roster, will be a huge question throughout the summer Ebenezar Ekuban was being used at DT on third down, similar to the way he was being used in 2006. DeWayne Robertson participated in his first full practice as a member of the Broncos and came out of it none the worse for wear - It felt good. I went full-go. We're getting a lot of good coaching out there from Bill (Johnson) and Jake (Burney). We've just got to take the coaching and keep progressing. Robertson has a chronic knee condition and is coming back from off-season wrist surgery. 460 Pounds. That's what Broncos Guard Montrae Holland likes to bench press - It's the mos...

Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 7 - Darrent Williams Teen Center Opens
2008-05-30 15:15:00
Today will mark the final day of the Broncos Quarterback Camp.  There won't be much time off, however, as the team gets right back to work next week.  AS a reminder, here are the important dates remaining for the Broncos this "Re-Loading Season" -- Team camp: June 2-6; June 9-13 (tentative). * Minicamp: July 7-8. * Training camp: Players report July 24. Much of the news yesterday happened off the field as the Darrent Williams Teen Center was officially opened during a ceremony that was attended by Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen, Head Coach Mike Shanahan, Rosalind Williams, Darrent's mother and 30-40 Broncos players. PHOTO COURTESY It was a moving day, complete with 27 Orange and Blue colored balloons being released into the bright-blue Denver sky and speeches from dignitaries and Broncos staff alike. I could grab all the quotes, talk about all that was said, but feel it would do the whole thing a disservice. There are two quotes I feel deserve mention, one from Darren...

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 6 - News and Notes
2008-05-29 13:22:00
Some much to say, so little space!  Actually, I have all the space I want, and it's a good thing.  Yesterday seemed to be a busy day for guys getting injured(Dre Bly), guys feeling better(Jay Cutler) and guys that are simply off their rocker(Todd Sauerbrun).  We'll start with the Quarterback. Jay Cutler says he is completely back to normal, or at least what normal is now. The weight is back to normal, the conditioning is back to normal, and cutler is ready to go -- I feel fine, I feel like I did last year at camp. I've gotten everything back, I can definitely feel a difference from March. I've got all of my zip. I can make all the deep throws. It definitely feels good to do that again. Culter's teammates are also glad to see the 'old Jay' back -- Brandon Stokely - It's almost like night and day between right now and the end of last year. Patrick Ramsey - He's not a different person. Jay's Jay, but at the same time, he's easier to be around - and I don'...

Michael Pittman Passes Physical, Officially Joins Broncos
2008-05-28 17:23:00
The Denver Broncos on Wednesday signed unrestricted free-agent running back Michael Pittman, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Broncos also on Wednesday waived fourth-year safety Marviel Underwood.Pittman (6-foot-0, 228 pounds) is an 11th-year player who joins the Broncos from Tampa Bay, where he spent the previous six seasons (2002-07). The running back played his first four professional seasons (1998-2001) with Arizona after the Cardinals selected him in the fourth round (95th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft from Fresno State University. In 145 career regular-season games (78 starts), Pittman has totaled 5,307 rushing yards on 1,316 carries (4.0 avg.) with 21 touchdowns. He ranks second among all active NFL running backs (Tampa Bay’s Warrick Dunn) with 3,400 receiving yards on 415 catches (8.2 avg.) with eight scores. The veteran stands ninth in the league among all active running backs with 8,707 career yards from ...
Pittman signs with the Denver Broncos
2008-05-28 15:00:00
Former Bucs RB Michael Pittman has finally latched on with another club: After six seasons with the Bucs, Pittman will resume football activities for one year with the Denver Broncos. I know alot of you enjoyed Pittman, but I have to be honest, I never liked the guy. I thought he was a poor mans Eddie George, with a Big Poppa Pump flair.. He had no field vision, seemed to always run into the backs of his blockers, and would fall down from the slightest contact, sometimes a blade of grass would trip him up (Eddie George esque). I hope he does well in Denver, but I give him a year or two and then he'll become a professional wrestler or open a strip club..

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 5 - News and Notes
2008-05-28 13:52:00
I hope you all had a great Holiday weekend.  I know I did and I once again thank those of you that kept the site rolling along.  The Broncos also enjoyed the weekend before getting back to it yesterday.  Let's take a look at was was seen and heard on Day 5. Travis Henry has been officially put on notice. The Broncos reached a tentative agreement with Free Agent RB Michael Pittman, which should become official today after the 32 year-old passes a physical. You can read more about it HERE and HERE. We'll get to Henry in one second. As for Pittman, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus for those keeping score at home, thinks he can get some things done for the Broncos - There's a lot of ways Michael can help the Broncos, he can play fullback, halfback, he can catch the ball out of the backfield, return punts and return kicks. He's a versatile back. Pittman, whose arms dwarf most mens' thighs in terms of pure girth, feels healthy and ready to go -- I know I can play. I've ...

MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Austin "Goose" Gonsoulin
2008-05-27 01:01:00
The Goose was and still is the greatest defensive back to ever play for the Denver Broncos.  Champ Bailey may one day break Austin Gonsoulin's many Bronco records, but until that happens he will have to play second fiddle to the great Goose. Gonsoulin played just eight seasons, yet his play during his short career earned him the unique honor of being one of the four original Ring of Fame members in 1984.  I consider him to be among the forgotten Broncos that deserve to be in the hall of fame, but has been snubbed thus far by those who hold the power of selection.       Gonsoulin was born in Port Arthur, Texas where he played running back and defensive back in high school while also starring in track.  He was chosen to All-District and All-State in his senior year before heading to Baylor where he added receiver to his list of playing positions. This versatility made him a complete player when the Denver Broncos brought him in to play defensive ...
Broncos - Position Comparison '07 vs '08
2008-05-25 21:57:00
Have we improved as a team since last year? It's clearly too early to tell. Every fan of every team feels they are better off after the draft, and I'm no different. But I still want to do a comparison, and see what other rabid fans think. So without further ado... QB Cutler did very well last year, breaking the top ten in most analysts opinions and in only his first full year. Now consider this: He did it with an untreated illness (losing weight the entire time), he did it with two OL on injured reserve, he did it missing his number one WR, he did it missing his top three RBs for most of the season. Not bad at all. Now his diabetes is under treatment and control, he has another year of experience, and the team starts healthy. This should be a spectacular year for Jay. Behind Jay are thesame two back-ups. Perhaps Hackney passes Ramsey in the depth chart. QB - Strong improvement RB Henry gets a new start, and he may or may not suffer from injuries again. But Young is...
Denver Broncos 2008 QB Mini Camp - Week One Recap
2008-05-24 00:00:00
The 2008 Denver Broncos embarked on their annual journey toward playoff success this week. Humbled after a 7-9 season last year, the team had re-tooled, if not re-vamped, both the offensive and defensive sides of the football this offseason in order to show improvement from last year. Now that the new pieces were in place ...

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Week 1 Round Up
2008-05-23 14:56:00
The first of two weeks in this year's Quarterback Camp are complete and while there isn't much to be learned from a bunch of guys in shorts and a t-shirt it sure was nice to be talking about football again. There is some news to speak of. Tony Scheffler had his foot examined and the news turned out to be better than expected. The soreness in his foot is nothing but that, but the Coach will still tread lightly this early in workouts. We know there's not another break in there. You can see that on the X-rays. But there's something in there that keeps him quite sore, and, hopefully, with a couple weeks in the boot, he'll come back full speed and we don't aggravate the injury. Nate Jackson, Scheffler's back-up, knows all too well how frustrated Scheff is with the chronic pain. "He feels like, 'What am I doing wrong for this to happen?' It's the same time as last year, the same play. But I feel for him. He's a friend of mine, and I don't like to see him dealing with th...

Broncos Offense on Crutches
2008-05-22 20:36:00
What is going on with the Denver Broncos?  This offseason has been nothing more than an injury-riddled continuation of 2007. In 2007, the Denver Broncos suffered more lost man games than any other season in Mike Shanahan’s tenure.  In 2008, we’ve already seen Brandon Marshall severe tendons and nerves in his arm, Jay Cutler being diagnosed ...
Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 3 - News and Notes
2008-05-22 14:18:00
3 days are in the books and the Broncos suffered their first significant injury, though it has lingered for a year now.  Let's take a look at what(and who) went down yesterday --   Tony Scheffler will miss the next month of action due to recurring problems with his broken foot. It was during Quarterback Camp in 2007 that Scheffler initially broke the bone in his foot and played through pain all of last season. There is concern that Scheff may have actually re-fractured the foot, though the Broncos are taking a wait-and-see approach. With Scheffler out of the lineup, old friend Nate Jackson will be counted on to take his place. With Daniel Graham proving last season that his strength is blocking, not running routes, the Broncos need a down-field threat from the Tight End position. Jackson signed a 1-year/$605,000 contract in March with a $425,000 signing bonus. I have always felt an injury to one's foot, especially if you are a running back or tight end, can be extre...
MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Rich "Tombstone" Jackson
2008-05-22 01:01:00
When Bronco fans today are asked who the most famous Bronco ever to don the #87 jersey, most would blurt out "Eddie Mac!" before giving anything more than half a thought.  The fact is, the most famous and most talented Bronco ever to wear the #87 Bronco uniform had a nickname that understated his true force on the field of play.  His nickname was "Tombstone" and yes, I said that understates his true presence on the field. We all love Eddie Mac and he was a great player for us, but he never had the NFL write a special rule just for him in order to protect the lives of other players.  That rule was written because of the exploits of Rich "Tombstone" Jackson.       The special rule I am referring to is the "Head Slap" rule, which was instituted in 1977 by the NFL in large part because of Rich Jackson and others after him, such as Deacon Jones.  His patented head slap moves, like the "halo spinner", earned Jackson a reputation as one of the to...

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 2 - News and Notes
2008-05-21 13:40:00
Day 2 of Quarterback Camp didn't have the storylines of Day 1 , but that doesn't mean there's nothing to report.  Let's take a look around to see what was seen and heard -- A big disappointment in 2007 was the defense. Jarvis Moss was disappointed as well. Not being on the field has left the Broncos' First Round pick in 2007 with something to prove -- I feel it, I've got a little chip on my shoulder. Being out, I'm ready to go play football. I'd be ready if it started tomorrow. Of course, there have been alot of additions to the defense, something Moss sees as a benefit - That's what makes the team good, the competition among each other, when training camp hits, competition will definitely pick up. That's exactly what we need, guys fighting for position and getting better every single day. The Head Coach surely sees a difference in Moss -- His conditioning is looking better, for him to come back his second year should be a positive. Usually those linemen l...
Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp - Day 1 News and Notes
2008-05-20 14:46:00
The Quest has officially begun. The players were on the field, except Travis Henry of course, and the work of turning around two seasons of simply average(16-16) football is at hand. Here's what was seen and heard on Day 1 of Quarterback Camp --   The biggest news of the day had to be the appearance of Brandon Marshall on the practice field. You can read about it HERE and HERE. Everyone seemed happy to see Marshall, a key component to the Broncos' success in 2008 -- Mike Shanahan was a bit surprised - "He's doing everything a receiver would do except catch the ball. It's ahead of what I thought initially, I was told he could not work out until a month before we went to training camp. And we still thought we could get him in shape, ready to go for our first practice. As for when Marshall might be able to catch a ball again, and his availability for Training Camp, Shanny had this to say -- June 22 with will be the first day he'll be able to catch the football, so tha...
A Letter To Broncos Fans From Andrew Mason
2008-05-20 12:36:00
The below letter was written by former Broncos Blogger Andrew Mason.  Mason was the Sr. Editor at DenverBroncos.com for several years until recently being let go.  Mason, a fan of the site, asked if he could thank all of you directly for your support over the years and especially when news of his "release" was reported.  As you'll see below, Andrew has landed on his feet. In the comments I read on message boards, my former blog, e-mail and other venues, many of you wanted to know where I would end up.  I didn't want to say much until I had something to report -- which is now the case. But please forgive me for detouring before getting to the point of this piece. With the Broncos opening their quarterback camp on Monday morning, I found myself taking a few minutes to click around and see how the first day of OTAs was being covered.  After all, it seems like only yesterday that I was blogging about Broncos offseason practices, and just a couple of hours ago ...

The rookies and free agent signings were all assigned jersey numbers ...
