Chris Brooks: Licks on Demand #4: Economical speed picking ala Yngwie

You ask about it - I play it! It's the series where the material is chosen by you. In this episode, I explain the picking economy of motion that I've been asked about many times, but as recently as this week due to the video mentioned in the annotations. I'll be offering a complete picking package very soon.Gear: YJM Strat, Suhr Koko Boost, Suhr Badger 30 head, Port City cabinetYes, that's my cat Lily meowing to be let into the music room. She's a big fan of electric guitar! I tried to drown her out with the background music but she's got a set of pipes that one!Want a Chris Brooks T-shirt? Chris Brooks: Guitar Licks on Demand #5: Kotzen / Gilbert legato arpeggio
2012-01-25 23:02:00
This week's G.L.O.D. content was requested by Greg, who wanted a break-down of the legato arpeggio + Garsed style arpeggio in "Velvet Claws". It's a lick in the style of Richie Kotzen and Paul Gilbert who've both used this shape in the past so I encourage you to steal it and do your own thing with it too! I followed it with a lick I also broke down in GLOD#1.Got a request for a future Guitar Licks on Demand video? Shoot me a message, and email via http://chrisbrooks.com, or comment on this video. You can get the full tab and a backing track for Velvet Claws in the Chris Brooks web store: http://chrisbrooks.com/web_stor-e (where you can also grab my new album!)Gear: Suhr CB standard, Xotic BB pedal, Suhr Badger 30 head and Port City OS212 cabinet. Chris Brooks: Black Star - time machine lands at age 18.
2012-01-21 11:23:00
I have a whole raft of demos from players but not this one. Really great to see players post some of the history of guitar... just shows all you 18 year olds the level of chops that were around at that time. You might not hear it in my recent music but I owe a lot to the nimble-fingered Swede. I dusted off my Yngwie Strat today and did some reminiscing about all the time I spent working on my chops thanks to Yngwie's inspiration. So in that spirit, I offer you this 4-track demo I did when I was about 18, complete with some photos of a younger me for extra laughs! Enjoy! PS The dodgy cheering sample was my attempt to imitate the crowd on Yngwie's "Live in Leningrad" album. Chris Brooks at age 18 playing Black Star on Yngwie Malmsteen Strat

Chris Brooks: How to Measure success
2012-01-03 21:01:00
How to Measure success If you?re out there plugging away at your music career, you already know that it?s hard, extremely time consuming, and exhaustive work trying to steer the attention of the distracted and time-starved folks out there towards whatever it is you do.So how do you rate your success? What unit of measurement do you consult to judge how things are going? Is it the number of Facebook friends you have, or the number of Youtube subscribers, or how many hits your shred video has had? What about the number of people on your mailing list, or how many people read the thread you started at xyz gear forum?Read more... Plus the Things I want For Every Guitar Player   I want you to start on a crappy guitar, but be so happy you have one that you don?t realise for a couple of years.I want your first band to suck, but that you won?t know it at first because you?re having too much fun.I want you to be frustrated with your progress, but get regular bre...

Chris Brooks: Axis Of Al Things gets the Fifth Fret Treatment... dare you r
2011-12-22 01:05:00
This album also features some amazing tones. Brooks uses a Suhr Custom Standard guitar (similar to a Super Strat) and a Suhr Badger 30 amplifier head, which Brooks says has a Plexi sort of sound, as well as a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier into Port City cabinets loaded with Eminence Cannabis Rex speakers. Between the guitar and amp lie assorted Suhr and Boss pedals. If you are a fan of instrumental rock, this album is required buying and you won't be disappointed. If you think you may be interested in getting into this kind of genre, this album is an excellent introduction to it. more
Chris Brooks: Must have album review and give away
2011-12-19 21:23:00
Full review and give away: http://serendipitymommy.com/rev-iews/music-giveaway-chris-brook-s-the-axis-of-all-things/ There is a lot of ?Morse? moments because of the band working together so well with Chris, but moreover he kept his mind on making music and knew when to shred and when to harmonize, build, changeup, let loose, and come back down. It?s hard to lose interest in this album for me. It?s like my playlist. I?ve always been happy with a few tracks to add to my playlist. I even started buying two or three tracks from albums. It?s been the norm. But this?this album is a must have. The samples just can?t do it justice. You have to take the ride! ?and HOLY LEGATO!!!!!!!!

Chris Brooks: Live4Guitar digging deep on the Aussie rocker
2011-09-22 23:52:00
The new album is sounding awesome, Chris Brooks on top form and now an interview with my buddies over at Live 4 Guitar. Thanks for joining us on Live4Guitar Chris - its really great to have you here - lets start by talking a little bit about your fantastic new album "The Axis of All Things" Thanks Levi. I really appreciate you guys getting behind the new album. Why dont we open with you telling the readers a little bit about the album and where they can get it from? ?The Axis of All Things? is my second solo instrumental album. A few years back I decided I was in the right place to make another album, and I really just wanted to write a bunch of cool guitar songs, regardless of the style that came out. I realised that some of my best ideas came up while jamming or practicing rather than consciously writing, so it started there, and of course then I went into ?structure mode? to put them together. My first album was very big on guitar/keyboard interplay like a Liquid Tension E...
Chris Brooks: Guitar Noize " great to have such incredible talent on my doo
2011-09-21 00:07:00
My favourite riff on the album is ?Feeding The Myth? which apparently Chris has been toying with since 1997, throwing it in at soundchecks etc. and finally built an excellent Funky Rock track around it with some astonishing playing, for me this track alone puts Chris up there with the best guitar players on the planet, such incredible technique, feel, tone and phrasing. The section with Chris and Rick Graham trading solos is really cool I?d love to see a video of these guys performing together. This album is not just another shred album that shows off a players abilities rather than their musicianship, Chris has created a great album full of melodic rock and fusion that is both enjoyable to listen to and, as a guitarist myself, inspiring. It?s great to have such incredible talent on my doorstep. more http://www.chrisbrooks.com

Chris Brooks: The Axis of All Things on track!
2011-07-31 15:16:00
help Chris Brooks and be part of a winning CD So let?s me keep you up to speed on the exciting album that you?ve kindly agreed to be a part of? John Romeo has crafted a mix that I?m very happy with. It?s a great fit for the music. He?s about 1/2 way though the mix, and he sends me each track as he goes for any feedback and tweak suggestions that I have. Having a couple of different drummers, and a few different styles of song requires a little personal attention rather than a ?conveyor belt? approach to the mix of each song, yet it all has to sound good on the same CD by the same token. I?m stoked with what we have so far. The final track listing for ?The Axis of All Things? reads like this (order may be changed before the pressing: Prelude The Axis Of All Things Open Doors Not the day, Nor the hour Feeding The Myth (featuring Rick Graham) Transfiguration Wisdom Rd Hammers Heart (Kee Marcello cover) In and out of Dreams (Axis pt II) (featuring Brett Garsed and Lord Tim) Velvet Claws
Chris Brooks: Are we losing the "experience" of the album format?
2011-07-07 20:13:00
Are we losing the "experience" of the album format? When writing a Forward for my upcoming CD packaging, I was reflecting on the anticipation I used to feel when a new album from my favorite artist (or some new discovery) would finally come into stock at Utopia Records in Sydney, and the "process" I used to go through before hearing it. Here's what I wrote for the CD jacket. Between you and me, I love the fact that you paid for this album. Yes, it?s getting harder as each year goes by for a musician to find suitable compensation in the recorded medium, but I?m so glad you?ve made your investment in me. We?ve all got our points of view on ?the industry?, but I thank God that there are still people willing to look past the price of plastic and paper involved in a reproducing a CD, and make a symbolic contribution to the artist for the experience of an album. As a younger man, I relished the ritual of buying an album from the store (sometimes completely blind, buying on a whim, a gue...
