Perfect Brownies?Enter Chocolate Xanadu
2008-06-08 01:15:00
Seriously. You know it. I know it. Brownies need to be so chocolatey that they make you sweat. So moist you can carefully cut a slice out of the middle and push the two sides back together to make a whole brownie…and no one is the wiser… They need to be so amazing ...

Tuesdays with Dorie: French Chocolate Brownies
2008-06-03 15:05:00
torta al cioccolato/chocolate cakeIts that time of the week again and this week's Tuesdays with Dorie recipe is French Chocolate Brownies, courtesy of Di (Di?s Kitchen Notebook). Unlike last week's baking without the A/C on, I cranked that baby on and was ready with spatula in hand. I was excited to see the recipe wasn't complicated. Not that I wouldn't be up for it; I just welcomed a quick recipe that resulted in something yummy. Please bare with me as I have another short post today. I was at the restaurant last night and while I would have gotten home around 3AM, I drove someone home. No biggy. Push my bedtime back to 3:30. Except, I wasn't quite sure where I came out on 285 (the highway loop that goes around Atlanta), and went East instead of West. Pulled in the garage at 4:30 AM. Ugh! I didn't get up at 7AM like planned, so I need to shift my day, and put the gym after lunch instead of the AM. Why, you ask? You're off for the summer? That is correct? However...I am meetin...
TWD - French Chocolate Brownies
2008-06-03 08:03:00
Dorie Greenspan has a way of making even me, who ardently claims not to be crazy about chocolate, crazy about chocolate. When I read that Di of Di’s Kitchen Notebook had chosen French Chocolate Brownies for this weeks TWD recipe, I was lukewarm about the idea of brownies, but happy to have a simple recipe after my L'Opéra adventure and the two day, two part Pecan Honey Sticky Buns recipe from last week's TWD rotation. I don't consider myself much of a brownie lover, and even though Dorie herself says that these aren't really brownies; I was a bit shocked when I saw that the recipe included raisins! Huh, raisins in brownies?! I'd call myself a borderline raisin hater, meaning I won't gag if I have to eat them, but they certainly don't make me shiver with delight. This was definitely going to be one for the colleagues, or at least, so I thought.
Tuesdays with Dorie: French Chocolate Brownies
2008-06-03 00:00:00
This week Di of Di's Kitchen Notebook has chosen French Chocolate Brownies on pages 92-93 from Baking: From my home to yours. Dorie named that brownies French, because she had the idea for this sweet in Paris. The recipe was easy, but I omitted flaming the dried fruits. I used dried apricots, because I had no raisins. The taste was nice but not outstanding. I don't think having the idea in France made them "French" enough. For more French Chocolate Brownies and the recipe visit Di of Di's Kitchen Notebook and the blogroll at the Tuesday's With Dorie website. Pages: 1 2 COMMENTS - ADD COMMENT

Click here for the English version. Salz1/8Teel. Zimt,- gemahlen50-55Gramm Rosinen *1 1/2Essl. Wasser1 1/2Essl. Rum170Gramm Bitter-Sch-okolade **170Gramm Butter3  Eier, 150 g200Gramm Zucker Quelle  Dorie Greenspan: Baking, From my home to yours ISBN978-0-618-44336-9  Erfasst *RK* 26.05.2008 von Ulrike Westphal Zubereitung Eine quadratische Form von 20 cm Kantenlänge mit Backpapier auslegen und fetten. It's Cloverfield -- with raccoons and brownies!
2008-05-29 22:29:00
Our anniversary was a complete success. We saw a great movie-- yes, Indiana Jones and The Temple of The Crystal Skull was great and everyone who says it wasn't is just a dork-- ate a great dinner, and wreaked a little havoc.About that dinner, first: after Sweetie read my preview of our anniversary celebration, she took issue with me. She said "How can you say I'm the less fancy of the two?"I explained that I could say that because it's true. She then said, in a very powerful rebuttal to my argument, that it was not true.We then went out for dinner on our Alternate Anniversary (see, families? We don't just make you celebrate alternate holidays; we do them, too) to a restaurant that serves, really, just sandwiches. I ordered the chicken sandwich, and was pleased to see that it came topped with liver sausage. I also got the fries. Sweetie ordered, in her far-more-fancy-than-me way, a grilled cheese. She got the salad, which in the manner of all salads in all restaurants everywhere,...

Low Carb Chocolate and Pecan Brownies
2008-05-17 03:35:00
I went off the elimination diet a while ago now, have toughened up on my carbs and have started playing in the kitchen. I am a chocolate lover and the elimination diet meant no chocolate so what do you think I wanted to play with first?Chocolate! These are yum so I thought I'd share, these are a low carb version of a Jamie Oliver recipe. Strangely enough, I find these very satisfying. I have another variation that I did the first time which is more chocolaty which you can find in my low carb brownie thread plus another member has posted another recipe which looks good but I haven't tried yet.Now I will tell you straight off, that my taste buds are well adjusted to low carb, so depending on where you are at, you may find you need a little more splenda. I am thinking these would be even better with a sugar alcohol like erythritol or xylitol for that sugary type mouth feel.Oh I should say that the picture is from my first batch and this is my second batch but they look exactly the sam...

Booze before Brownies?
2008-05-07 00:00:00
This has been a real shit day ! It started with the alarm going off an hour late because we forgot to set it last night and it hasn?t gotten any better. To make this day last even longer I have to take Allison to a Brownie meeting this evening from 6:30 to 7:30 and I have no way of getting out of it. Not when my daughter is this weeks troop speaker and has plans to talk all about her trip to Europe. I guess it would make me a pretty bad mom if I made her miss that because I am having a bad day. How bad of a mom would I be if I showed up at Brownies smelling of booze? Would that be any better? Nah, I guess I can suck it up and race home and get my self together, splash some water on my face and throw some jeans on before her meeting. She only has one more meeting after tonight and then the troop is done for the year.

The Brownies, The Paramedic and Lassie
2008-04-11 20:19:00
In another episode of "Interactions with Small Folks", I drove my sister to a local Brownies troop last night. She's doing her clinical work for paramedic school, and one of the requirements is a series of volunteer activities in the community that will raise awareness about her new profession. In this case, teaching young people about the paramedic's life. Incidentally, this is my other little sister's troop (who was more than excited to show off her big sisters). En route to the Fire Hall in the Middle of Nowhere: Me: "So, what do you have prepared for your talk? Notes?"T: *tapping her skull* "All up here."Me: ?! "Are you going to do a situation?"T: "Dude, don't worry, I've got it under control. You can be my patient."Me: !!When Brown Owl (the leader) asked her if she would be absorbing the entire 1.5 hours, I started to consider a religious consultation on T's behalf. Admittedly, it went well, since T is much better suited to that off-the-cuff style. The first half was a di...

Cappuccino Brownies

My additional food allergies put a definite crimp into my chocolate life. Making a brownie without eggs at high altitude has been a nightmare. I kid you not. You try it. The damn brownies never cook- they sizzle and ooze and just when you can take it no longer, Dear Reader, you yank the unctuous mud out of the oven out of sheer boredom and disgust (they've been baking for what, three days?) and
Healthy Snacks: Vitalicious Muffin Tops and Brownies
2008-02-19 00:46:00
I had heard about these Vitalicious snacks from Weight Watchers and a few TV shows like the Rosie O'Donnell show. I thought of them as diet foods and not just healthy good tasting choices. Before I tell you about these healthy snacks from Vitalicious, I need to take a moment to express how I used to feel about healthy snacks. I thought that for something to be healthy, it couldn't possibly taste good. I used to think that if a food was labeled "diet" or good for you, it had to have a gross, yucky after taste that made you never want to eat it again. Vitalicious seriously changed my mind about healthy snacks. I am now a convert! Click to read more ...

Heh. I thought you meant "those" kind of brownies, too. ;-)I've got a Brownie, and of course had to load up on the Carmel Delights. Thin mints too. Now for the other kind of brownies, there's a story about a certain Christmas Eve in my Local, on a large job with a certain brother with a certain reputation who brought in a platterful. Everyone knew (or strongly suspected) what very special brownies these were....except for one of the engineers on the job. He was from out of town. Upon seeing the brownies, he said, "wow! great! yum!" and grabbed two handfuls. He scarfed them down quickly. They found him later on when doing the lock-up walkthrough, sitting on the floor by himself and laughing his ass off. He never mentioned the brownies, but he stopped coming around at breaktime. Lucky for him, it was a short walk from the jobsite to his hotel!

Supernatural Brownies
2008-02-06 02:47:00
Awhile back, I came across a blog that was conducting a sort of brownie experiment. She was testing out the brownie recipes featured in a New York Times article. One of the brownies peaked my interest. It was the Supernatural Brownie. Mostly because it was one of the many recipes, I had added to my ?to-bake? list. I looked for the recipe and taped it to the fridge. And not to soon forgot about it.Recently my friend Katie posted a recipe for gluten free mint brownies. They looked so dark and fudgy that I had to have a brownie immediately. Off to the kitchen I went in search of all the necessary ingredients. As I turned to preheat the oven, I noticed the recipe for the supernatural brownies, uh-oh. Guilt. I re-read the recipe and the article. Humph, what to do now? Well, I?m that not good with guilt, so I knew I was going to be baking Supernatural Brownies. Not wanting to have sub par brownies, I took the author?s advice and used the best ingredients for my brownies. I agre...
Have the Blairites commenced hostilities with the Brownies?
2008-02-02 16:59:00
In a previous post I gave Gordon Brown until May before he was given the boot. I may have wrong. You see, he could be going much sooner. Not wanting to sound like a gypsy palm reader, I think I see a pattern emerging! Two former Senior Labour Ministers have been critical of their own party this week. The two critical interviews do not seem that damaging when taken individually, BUT when you look at the targets of the criticism and take into account that they came only days apart, Gordon Brown and his supporters will know exactly what is going on.If you stand in Downing Street and listen quietly you may just hear anguished screams of "the Blairites are coming, the Blairites are coming!"First we had Charles Clarke who said:"Labour has wasted much of the first half of this parliament. With some exceptions, our action to make the necessary changes has been insufficient. And now it seems to me that Labour still remains very unclear about our approach, both in this parliament and the next...
Bean There, Done That: Gluten-Free Brownies
2008-02-02 04:41:00
Years ago, when I taught a course called “Feeding Body and Soul,” students were asked to contribute a recipe that had been handed down in their family as a way to illustrate the power of food through the generations.  One young woman (who, in her words, had been “raised by hippies”) gave me a recipe for Navy Bean Muffins, made from the usual ingredients but using pureed navy beans instead of flour.  I thought this twist was just groovy, man, and resolved to some day make them myself.  Well, that day hasn’t yet arrived, but I did think of beans as the perfect addition to my GF brownies, about which I posted last Monday. This recipe for Gluten-Free Brownies is one of three for chocolate treats with hidden healthy ingredients, just up today on VegFamily magazine. To see the other two as well, check out the entire article.  The hidden gem in these rich, chocolately squares is pureed beans.  Now, before you go running to the hills, consider that many...

2008-01-31 13:47:00
