Free Browsing Mobile App Launched By Penguin
2011-08-23 10:19:00
Gone are the days of going to a bookstore to check out the latest releases and bestsellers. These days whether it’s the Harry Porter series or the latest John Grisham thriller, everything is literally a click away. E-readers, iPads and download-able books have made owning a hard copy somewhat obsolete and seem to be aware of this trend is Penguin who has launched a new app. It is a mobile phone application which will now permit readers and book lovers to log on to the Penguin database to browse through its bookshelf for latest titles and news related to publishing. The free application, which can be downloaded from mobile phones like Apple and Nokia, will appear under “just published”, “bestsellers” and “coming soon”. Excerpts from forthcoming titles will also be available. To avoid cycle of piracy, Penguin India went digital because e-readers were lowering down book publishing business out of shelf. If that’s not enough and one is looking for...

Apps Beat Web Browsing On Mobile Devices?
2011-02-22 08:30:00
As long as I’ve been using the web on various mobile devices, I’ve always found my usage heavily biased towards using apps. Right from Windows Mobile 6.1 (yes, they do have apps) to iOS, it has been about various apps. Why? It’s just more convenient/faster. When you need the web on-the-go, its almost always for a very specific purpose, and thanks to the ‘wonderful’ gprs/edge speeds we get, firing up Google and jumping from link to link isn’t always an option. At the recently held Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Zokem – a company that provides mobile analytics – published a study on patterns in Mobile Usage. Now here’s the thing, it comprised of 2,200 smartphone owners and was restricted to the US and UK – so we’ll probably take the findings with a pinch of salt. Usage patterns for studied for the month of January 2011. Messaging related services – which included emails, text messages, multimedia messages, i...

Mozilla Firefox 3.5- A Smaller Footprint To Make Web Browsing Better
2009-07-29 06:00:00
One of the most significant features of the latest release of Mozilla Firefox is the fact that it has a much smaller footprint as compared to all previous versions of the web browser. So, what does this mean in lay man terms? You will quickly realize that Firefox 3.5 is a lot faster than all web browsers that you have used before. The credit for this feature goes to the fact that the web browser now has a smaller footprint. This means that the web browser shall consume less computer resource and less memory. There was a time when a high footprint did not pose any problems whatsoever. However, that was at a time when people logged on to the World Wide Web only for information. Today, people surf the web for numerous reasons - getting information, being just one of them. Simply take a look at the number of software applications that you open and run alongwith your web browser. Origami Experience 2.0 Part 1: Web Browsing
2008-04-30 10:10:00
In Part 1 of my 4 part series of blog posts looking at the Origami Experience 2.0 software, I am going to talk about one of the most important new experiences in the new release: browsing the web directly in Origami Central. Origami Central, one of the three apps in the Origami Experience, has the built in capability to browse webpages just as you would in IE7. ActiveX controls work just fine in the browsing experience of Origami Central - as does Flash and Silverlight (demo video below!). In Origami Central, the browsing experience is tied to the toolbar that auto-hides at the top of the window. Because the toolbar auto-hides, I get a full screen web browsing experience and with a UMPC running at 1024x600 resolution without toolbars and other things taking up useful screen real-estate. Just like in IE7, I can use the address bar in Origami Central to do web searches. But in Origami Central, when I type something in the address bar (a phrase or URL), it searches through the his...

A recent example is "Canon Digital Camera: EXPRESS, SHOOT AND SHARE" which reviews one of the best new camera offerings from Canon. While the site does offer some great coupon deals, I felt it was lacking a bit in its site appearance and layout. Some may disagree with me here, but there are many web users who are visual rather...
