Song Of The Day - "Pay Me My Money Down" by Bruce Springsteen &am

by Eric Berman Song Of The Day - "Pay Me My Money Down" by Bruce Springsteen From the underrated 2006 album "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions" where Springsteen ditches the E Street Band and sounds like he's actually having a good time again. Although the tour played to half-empty arenas, it was where Bruce rediscovered his mojo and didn't have to rely on faux preaching to get the crowd excited....

Biographer or stalker? Nevin Martell wants the head of 'Calvin and Hobbes'

Image via Wikipedia By BOB ANDELMAN There are plenty of creative people whose work I love but you?ll never catch me pursuing an interview with them. Bruce Springsteen, for one. I like the idea of leaving a little mystery out there, a little bubble I?ll never personally pop. Nevin Martell, on the other hand, had a different idea. He is devout fan of the old comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, created by Bill Watterson. And who isn?t? It is one of the most brilliant dailies ever created and when Watterson decided to suddenly stop producing it in 1995 after 10 years and 3,160 strips, no one was more disappointed than I. Okay, maybe Martell was. Owning a complete edition of the published strips wasn?t enough; he wanted to know more about Watterson, to talk with him and the people who knew and admired him and write a book about what made the man fly as high as Spaceman Spiff. Watterson, however, had other ideas. The last time he made a public appearance was 1990 and he had no interest ...

Rosanne Cash with Bruce Springsteen ? ?Sea of Heartbreak?

Roseanne Cash with Bruce Springsteen – “Sea of Heartbreak”

When Roseanne Cash turned eighteen, her father gave her a list of what he considered the 100 essential country songs. By way of an eleventh studio album, she recorded a dozen of them with a loose, jazzy backing band and an array of guests including Jeff Tweedy, Elvis Costello, and Bruce Springsteen. Without that backstory, The List might seem like just another covers album, like Tanya Tucker’s My Turn, or, worse, a standards album in the vein of those Rod Stewart abominations. But there’s obviously a story behind it, and a personal connection with each of these songs, which makes her engagement with the Songbook more akin to Johnny’s American Recordings series in its scope and sound. It’s surprising to realize that Johnny never record with Bruce Springsteen, even though they both covered each other’s songs over the years. Roseanne corrects that omission with a lovely version of “Sea of Heartbreak,” which was a hit for Don Gibson in 1961. Johnny covered it on his 1996 a...
John Fogerty and Bruce Springsteen – “When Will I Be Loved”
2009-09-21 15:43:00
These days, the Everly Brothers might be best remembered for singing odes to teenage love, but Phil and Don Everly had an abiding love for straight-up country music, as anyone who’s heard the rootsy Songs Our Daddy Taught Us knows. These Brylcreemed boys could write damn good songs as well. And although the brothers themselves dropped off the country charts decades ago, country artists have known about the power of an Everly-penned song for quite some time. Just in the past 20 years, Reba took “Cathy’s Clown” to #1, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss covered “Gone Gone Gone” on 2007’s Raising Sand, and now John Fogerty tackles “When Will I Be Loved” (written by Phil) for his new release The Blue Ridge Rangers Ride Again. This song, which has also been covered by Linda Ronstadt among others, is so masterfully written and artfully arranged that it’s near impossible to screw up. Add hearty amounts of fiddle and pedal steel, as F...
Rolling Stones T-shirt Series: Bruce Springsteen of the 80's
2009-06-03 03:45:00
For nearly four decades, Bruce Springsteen has been a rockstar of his working-class fans; as a man who lifted rock and roll from its early Seventies doldrums and to date, keep providing continuity and renewal at a point when we need them both. What I like from Bruce is that after so many achievement, the November 1998 when he is announced Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he knows now to be humble. And I couldn't agree more when someone ranks him alongside rock and roll figureheads as the Beatles, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Bob Dylan -- a few musicians who shaped popular music and served as a pivotal figure in its own music evolution since its rise in the mid-Seventies. Bruce definitely deserve to be on the official Rolling Stones (cover magazine) series T-shirt ($50) -- also available in navy blue color from eModa. This is a T-shirt I want to wear next time I attend his concert.

Madonna raised $472,000 for AIDS research during an auction in Mougins, France by selling a one-of-a-kind diamond encrusted alligator bag by Channel, a custom made white guitar....and the contents of her purse (lip gloss, hair clips, etc.). She told the crowd not to give low bids. "This lip gloss touched my lips."Poison drummer Rikki Rocket has been acquitted of rape charges from an incident last September in Mississippi.Emmylou Harris can be heard throughout this weekend on Animal Radio, a syndicated service also heard on XM Satellite Radio.Harris said, "Animals, that is what I want to devote my life to now. Animals can teach us how to be better human beings. They've certainly taught me that."Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ earlier this week to play four songs with Mike Ness during the singer's encore. Bruce Springsteen Returns To His Roots In 1995, In <i>The Loder Files
2008-05-13 14:02:00
Springsteen, who had just won an Oscar for 'Streets of Philadelphia,' pleased fans with an E Street Band reunion.By Kurt Loder Bruce Springsteen in a 1995 interview with Kurt Loder Photo: MTV News Where do old interviews go to die? Since 1988 they've gone into the MTV News vault, but we've been exhuming them to bring you these classic natterings. Here's the latest in the series, which runs every Tuesday. Bruce Springsteen fans wondered if their guy was going Hollywood when he moved to Los Angeles — to Beverly Hills! — in 1992. Two years later, when he won an Oscar for his theme song for the movie "Philadelphia," they figured that, well, yes, he apparently had. Springsteen's life had become all kinds of interesting following the release of his hugely successful 1984 album, Born in the U.S.A. The following year he married Julianne Phillips, a model and TV actress who'd made a fleeting appearance in the video for "Glory Days." This struck many, if not mo...

Evening Update - Marie Osmond, Madonna, Paul McCartney, more
2008-05-10 05:45:00
Marie Osmond has weighed in on the whole Miley Cyrus photo fiasco. Her criticism is not for Miley, but for her father Billy Ray for leaving the shoot before it was over. Osmond told AOL Television, "My parents never, never left us alone. We always had some form of a guardian or something with us, a guardian that would represent what they would have done."There is an active rumor in the U.K. that Madonna may expand her schedule at London's Wembley Arena from her current single show to a full residency. The reports say that it could challenge Michael Jackson's twenty-year-old record of seven nights at the venue. It's probably just a lot of fan speculation, but English chat boards are overrun with the idea that Ringo Starr will play with Paul McCartney at Liverpool's Sound City music festival from May 27 to 30. A source tells the Daily Star "There's been a lot of chat in Beatles fan chatrooms on the internet and the feeling is that it could happen."A new on-line poll in Englan...
Afternoon Update - Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond, Frank Zappa, Brian May
2008-05-09 01:20:00
What do you get when you see Bruce Springsteen in a small theater? Last night he and the E-Street Band played a fund raiser at and for the Count Basie Theater in New Jersey and the lucky few who made it got to hear an all-70's show, including complete playings, in order, of both the Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town albums. They even got the Max Weinberg 7 horn section on a few songs in addition to the regular E-Street Band horns. Neil Diamond's "surprise" show at the Bitter End in New York last night was an obvious sellout with speakers being put in the windows so the unlucky fans could hear the show. The seven song set included three songs from his mid-60's days at Bang Records, three from the new album Home Before Dark and the classic Sweet Caroline. Diamond revealed to the crowd that he had played one of his selections, Kentucky Woman, on that very stage forty years ago.The set list:Solitary ManDon?t Go ThereHome Before DarkPretty Amazing GraceKentucky WomanCh...

They are joining the likes of Albert Einstein, Toni Morrison, Clara Barton, Vince Lombardi and Yogi Berra.Chuck Leavell, keyboard player for the Rolling Stones, was given an honorary Doctorate of Music by the Central Michigan University on Saturday. If you keep these principles in life, no matter what you've chosen to do, you will be successful."Leavell also offered up the gem, "What's the difference between a musician and a municipal bond? A municipal bond matures and makes money."The Victoria and Albert Museum in London will be mounting an exhibit with over fifty costumes worn during performances by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Text of Bruce Springsteen's Eulogy for Danny Federici
2008-04-26 08:05:00
The following was posted on Bruce Springsteen's website. It is the text of the eulogy he gave at Danny Federici's funeral last Monday:Let me start with the stories. Back in the days of miracles, the frontier days when "Mad Dog" Lopez and his temper struck fear into the band, small club owners, innocent civilians and all women, children and small animals. Back in the days when you could still sign your life away on the hood of a parked car in New York City. Back shortly after a young red-headed accordionist struck gold on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour and he and his mama were sent to Switzerland to show them how it's really done. Back before beach bums were featured on the cover of Time magazine. I'm talking about back when the E Street Band was a communist organization! My pal, quiet, shy Dan Federici, was a one-man creator of some of the hairiest circumstances of our 40 year career... And that wasn't easy to do. He had "Mad Dog" Lopez to compete with.... Danny just outlasted...

Springsteen Gives Emotional Tribute to Federici in Tampa
2008-04-24 01:22:00
Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band provided a number of salutes to late keyboardist Danny Federici Tuesday night in Tampa, their first full show since his death. The full band took the stage and, once in place, Bruce somberly said, "This night is a special one, so we'd like to start with something for Danny." A recording of Blood Brothers played over a video tribute to Federici's career. Everyone stood in place watching before launching into the actual opener, Backstreets. A spotlight held steady on Federici's empty keyboard and chair.About a half hour into the show, Roy Brittan put on an accordion and walked to the front of the stage. Springsteen simply said "We better get this right. Somebody's watching" as the group launched into Fourth of July, Asbury Park (Sandy). Reports from the on-line community say that, at the end of the song, Bruce and Roy were both in tears. It was a scene that would be repeated through the night. They closed the show with an encore of the gosp...

While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision, so well described in his excellent book, Dreams of My Father, often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fi...

Unfortunately they don't seem to be commercially available on any of Bruce's compilations. However, you are wrong about him not liking the 3 mixes I did for him. On Dancing In The Dark, he actually came to the studio and hung out with us, going as far as popping out for beer when the studio-Power Station- had a momentary blackout. I did the mix for Cover Me inpart to give Bruce some new ideas for that the band could use for its live arrangement (they ended up using dub effects on the vocals and drums). Lastly, with Born In The USA, again some of the arrangement was used in the E Street Band's live performances. Again, thanks, ...

Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle [1973]
2008-02-03 13:24:00
Bruce Springsteen expanded the folk-rock approach of his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., to strains of jazz, among other styles, on its ambitious follow-up, released only eight months later. His chief musical lieutenant was keyboard player David Sancious, who lived on the E Street that gave the album and Springsteen's backup group its name. With his help, Springsteen created a street-life mosaic of suburban society that owed much in its outlook to Van Morrison's romanticization of Belfast in Astral Weeks. Though Springsteen expressed endless affection and much nostalgia, his message was clear: this was a goodbye-to-all-that from a man who was moving on. The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle represented an astonishing advance even from the remarkable promise of Greetings; the unbanded three-song second side in particular was a flawless piece of music. Musically and lyrically, Springsteen had brought an unruly muse under control and used it to make a matur...

If you are looking for a sure fire way to rock out this year, check out the hottest tour on the road right now, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s Magic Tour!
