2008-05-23 07:00:00 Dopo averne letta la recensione, domenica mi sono fatto trascinare a vedere "In Bruges", un filmettino appena uscito nelle sale (e non mi capitava da tempo di vedere un film appena uscito) L'opera non è male, anzi: ovviamente molto bella l'ambientazione (è uno spot della città), la storia molto "à la" Scorsese, recitazione buona - certo, non un film per rilassarsi, sia chiaro! Il problema, infine, è che il film non è piaciuto a nessuno dei miei amici: ma d'altro canto, non ce n'è uno che capisca qualche cosa di cinema...

From the trailer, I can already conclude, or shall I say predict, that it is somewhat in the style of my favorite movie, Snatch, with a nice portion of swearing, violence, and ofcourse humor.. humorous enough to see that the first 2 are not to be taken as offensive. :)It's always funny to get an international point of view on my little country. What are we known for in the UK, in the USA, or Canada? Chocolate, beer, "muscles from Brussels", boring touristic cities? Oh well, most of these stereotypes might be true I guess. And they are certainly not worse as those about our northern neighbours. While I didn't think it was Oscar worthy, it was still extremely enjoyable and underrated. I loved the characters and issues that it dealt with and still find myself recommending it to anyone that asks my opinion of last year's films. I mention that movie because In Bruges is probably going to turn out the same way. It's an extremely enjoyable film that will get overlooked and forgotten later in the year. Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) work for Harry (Ralph Fiennes) as hitmen. After one of their hits takes a turn for the worse, Harry sends them both to Bruges, Belgium to hideout for a while and wait for his call. Bruges turns out to be a small town with not much to do other then sightsee or hang out at the local pub. The competition took place during the Nuremburg beer fair 'Brau Beviale'. More than 570 beers were judged and awards prizes in 40 different categories. A Bruges to far
2007-08-21 01:37:00 I?m back, l?m tired and over-stuffed. Typical week-end in Belgium really. It warrants a few blogs entries but I will make do with one just to get going;European harmonisation - I hate it - walking (and Melissa hobbling) around the great city of Bruges this morning it hit me that maybe 30-40% of the retail outlets were multi-national. This is a great shame. I have been visiting Bruges for over 30 years and the ancient charm has held it own but it is now defiantly in danger of becoming Euro retail homogenised if the tide is not held back, ?Let op Brugges?.Oh by the way both Brugges and Bruges and occasional Brugge seem to be acceptable spellings.

2007-05-31 21:02:00 The last hour of yesterday's walk was one of two very brief times on this trip when I truly did not enjoy our journey. We had to walk on a narrow but busy road - drivers seemed to have little regard for us and cut it very fine, leaving dangerously little room when passing. Also a very strong wind had come up and we had to walk under some fragile looking trees - and my foot was hurting. When we eventually got to the only hotel in the area, we had to make such an inconvenient detour for, it was not exactly the Ritz. This morning everything looked different again, with a blue sky and the sun was shining (we have been incredibly lucky with the weather â for the last week it has only rained just after we reached our hotel for the day or at night). We quickly found a very pleasant off road cycling way that would take us back to the Ghent â Bruges canal. In fact today was the most pleasant walk we have completed since we entered Belgium.
