33 Club launches brunch; Gemini cuts back
2009-10-09 22:48:00
33 Club, Jerry Kleiner's newish Old- Town spot, launches brunch this weekend. We were lukewarm on the dinner offerings, which suffered from some basic execution problems, but we believe in second chances--especially when they involve a fried egg and gorgonzola BLT. In other brunch news, Jason Paskewitz's new Lincoln Park spot Gemini Bistro is cutting back brunch service to Sundays only....
Brunch and patio (finally!) debut at the Red Canary
2009-09-15 19:06:00
If you haven't been back to the Red Canary since it opened earlier this year, here's your excuse for a return trip: The much-delayed backyard patio opens tonight at 5 p.m. and will stay open until 11 p.m. nightly (midnight on Saturdays). Granted the weather stays as nice as it is currently, it'll stay open through mid-October. Debuting along with the ivy-draped patio is weekend brunch, featuring bottomless mimosa and bloody mary bars ($18 and $20, respectively) set up near the exit to the outdoor space. Chef Rick Spiros keeps the eggs benedict traditional, but puts his own twists on biscuits and gravy (made with aged cheddar and fennel sausage gravy) and chilaquiles (made with chorizo, fontina cheese and jalapeno cream). If got...

Brunch at Legume Bistro, Pittsburgh, PA
2009-07-31 15:35:00
I came across some pictures from a while back when a bunch of us went to Legume Bistro for Sunday brunch. Legume Bistro is located at 1113 S. Braddock Ave in the Regent Square area of Pittsburgh, PA. They are a small family operated restaurant. What caught our attention was their small but unique menu offering Italian and French inspired American cuisine. Their dinner menus change every day and they post them on their website by 5pm. Their brunch menu also varies week to week. The dishes they offer depend on the ingredients available to them. Most of the ingredients they use are organic and locally grown, with the exception of a few delicious ingredients that might not be available locally.Normally, their brunch runs from 10am to 2pm, but one that day they had to close early to prepare for a special dinner. Here's what we had for brunch that day. For a beverage, I ordered the French press coffee.I couldn't help but notice how adorable this cream container was. The waiter told us th...

Sunday Brunch Headlines Placeholder
2009-03-22 17:13:00
I was up late roaming the Scottish Highlands with a sexy yet sensitive warrior cheiftan. And girl needs her beauty sleep, you know. Let's start your Sunday off right with some terrifying news about Rich Harden and his magic ass: GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Rich Harden, scratched from Friday's game because he was ill, will pitch in the Cubs' Minor League camp on Wednesday to get back on track for the regular season. Harden is expected to throw 70-75 pitches on Wednesday, which is an off-day for the rest of the Major League camp. "If he's ready by the time the season starts, he's ready," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Saturday, "and if not, we've got [Sean] Marshall, who's ready, and we can throw [Harden] into the fifth-starter spot and give Harden more time." Um. . . .not ready? Why wouldn't he be ready? He was scratched because of the flu, right? RIGHT? He he, it's not like it's his . .  .arm or (gulp). . . SHOULDER or  . . ELBOW or like HIS BUTT or anything, right? I ...

Brunch en el Malbec
2008-11-24 17:38:00

Cuban not giving up He's gonna fight for his right to party. From the Trib: Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban remains as interested as ever in buying the Cubs, dismissing a report that Major League Baseball might not want him as an owner. According to a Chicago Sun-Times report that cited a baseball source, there was "zero chance" of Cuban taking over the Cubs. The Sun-Times source said the Internet billionaire would meet with resistance in trying to get approval from Major League Baseball. Cuban wouldn't comment on the report before the Mavericks played Denver on Friday night. "There's no reason to comment on anonymous comments from unsolicited sources. I mean it's ridiculous," Cuban said. Trib may sell smaller share of Cubs We may have to live with Sam Zell awhile longer. From the Daily Herald: The owner of the Cubs is willing to sell a smaller share of the baseball team than initially planned because the credit crunch has made it tougher for potential buyers to obtain loans, ...

So last night I started the cooking. Exercise will come, I am sure...ha! Thinking I like salads, including those without "greens", that's the direction I took. Always thinking of the fat and oils in mayo, I chose to do with my salad as I do with my sandwiches. I replaced the mayonnaise with (light) ranch dressing. Chilled? Yummy! Cubs look like crap in loss to Phils Blech. From the Trib: Citizens Bank Park was baseball's top home-run hitting ballpark last year, a fact that tends to scare off free-agent pitchers looking for a new home. "That's the word," said Cubs right-hander Jon Lieber, who spent the last three seasons in Philadelphia. "You're always going to overpay for pitchers if they're going to come here." But one pitcher who seems to have the ballpark figured out is Philadelphia left-hander Cole Hamels, who shut down the Cubs on one hit over seven innings Saturday night in a 7-1 victory before a sellout crowd of 45,072. Hamels' performance was in stark contrast to that of Cubs starter Ted Lilly, who served up home runs to Pedro Feliz and Ryan Howard while allowing five runs in 41/3 innings. "He didn't really have a good spring, and it has carried on forward to the early part of the season," manager Lou Piniella said. "He has to improve." Lilly agreed, and had no explanation for his location issu...
Saturday Brunch Headlines/Open Thread

Big Z has a start from the past Recovery is a process. From the Trib: The new, decaffeinated Carlos Zambrano was back to his old ways Friday night at Citizens Bank Park, letting his emotions get the best of him in a 5-3 loss to Philadelphia. Whether he was snapping back his glove after taking a throw from catcher Geovany Soto, stalking behind the mound after issuing a two-out walk or throwing back his head in disgust after a Pat Burrell fly dropped a few feet away from right fielder Daryle Ward, Zambrano was a study in frustration. Afterward, Zambrano was relaxed and contrite in the Cubs clubhouse. "We don't have to worry about those plays," he said. "We just have to worry about our players and do our jobs. My team gave me a lead, and I blew it. But those things are part of the game and you have to deal with it. Forget about today." Zambrano was he wasn't upset with himself or any of his teammates when he displayed some body language in the fateful sixth after the ball fell near W...

Simple Spring Brunch
2008-04-08 22:19:00
I think I’ve expressed my love for brunch on here enough times to forgo doing so yet another time. This brunch is simple, fresh, and light, and it's one that I make only in the spring, when asparagus are plentiful and in season. But because of its simplicity, it’s one of those meals that will only taste as good as the ingredients you put into it. In addition to fresh asparagus and delicate baby greens, I used farm-fresh eggs from the Waverly market, homemade bread (using the incredibly popular no-knead recipe), a freshly-squeezed lemon vinaigrette, and good parmigiano-reggiano cheese. Oh, and a touch of white truffle oil to make things decadent. Each part of this dish is incredibly simple to prepare, but together, they combine to form a meal that is definitely greater than the sum of its parts (or however that saying goes). Simple Spring Brunch: mixed baby greens with lemon-parsley-caper vinaigrette, grilled asparagus with parmigiano-reggiano, gri...

Brunch at Hungry Cat
2008-04-02 04:50:00
Yep, cell phone. We forgot the camera. Here we have a review of brunch at Hungry Cat, provided by guest blogger/erstwhile Knife partner D.R. Stewart. He was only too happy to help.Dana suggested brunch at The Hungry Cat. I said something about fish heads on toast. Get past thinking that seafood and early-morning weekend stomachs do not mix and you find that Hungry Cat doesn’t miss. From my lobster roll to her oyster po’ boy (and blueberry muffins with whipped cream and Meyer lemon curd), it was the kind of meal LA-haters claim you can’t get here. Smart, low on pretension, high on flavor.  We got there early, which means go over to the Borders (sorry, mom&pop book shops) and pick out Right-Wing books to secretly leave on the desks of screaming liberal co-workers. Then watch them really scream. [Ed. note: Huh?] 11AM finally came and we walked into Hungry Cat with way too many expensive hardcovers. We ate at the alternate bar, built in their expansion. Again, they co...

Easter Brunch at L'Orange Bleue
2008-03-24 00:56:00
My blog likes to masquerade as a food blog. I snap blog photos of my food so often, the posts should probably have their own label. But food is such an essential part of New York City culture, you cannot become a New Yorker without simultaneously becoming a foodie ... and a wine aficionado ... and a cocktail connoisseur. And you add a "brunch budget" to your monthly expenses.Food and drink are a defining - if not symbolic - part of most societies, but it's the diversity of authentic cuisine within the five boroughs that makes New York distinct.Today I joined my girlfriends for Easter brunch at L'Orange Bleue in Soho, where I ordered the Omelette Maxime and a mimosa from their brunch menu. A lazy Sunday afternoon passed us by as we enjoyed our usual brunch conversation: politics (a few jokes about Spitzer), finance (the latest news surrounding Bear Stearns), fashion, jobs, men, rent. Once all that could be eaten, drank and said ... had been eaten, drank and said, we went our separa...
