2011-10-18 22:54:00 I never saw my grandmother with a cookbook. Nor do I remember seeing any cookbooks on the shelves of the Delhi house. Nani was not the cookbook type of cook. Easter Brunch Made Easy: Stuffed French Toast, Zucchini Bread and Rosemary
2011-04-23 18:59:00 Easter is a time for little girls and boys to get dressed up in their Sunday best and go to church. For adults, it can be a time for religion, for family, for planting Easter eggs, or for simply eating good food. If you want to venture out and make your own (healthier) treats, look no further. The three recipes below make perfect accompaniments to a bigger spread, and you will fool everyone with the dairy-free ingredients. Experiment with different flavors to see what you like best. Enjoy!Vegan French Toast Stuffed With Cream CheeseIngredients:6 thick slices French bread or sourdough bread1/4 cup vegan cream cheese (Tofutti)1/2 tsp. grated orange zest (optional)5 tbs. organic sugar1/2 cup soy milk3 tbs. flour1 tsp. vanillavegan...

2011-02-15 03:36:00 Yesterday, I had the pleasure of spending my morning with some expectant and new mamas at the monthly Bump Club and Beyond Brunch at Vinci. I was part of a panel of Chicago mommy bloggers including Cindy McCarthy of On the Go Chicago, Linda Marsicano of Babble Chicago and my buddy and business partner Sara Fisher of Self-Made Mom fame. We all shared our tips for navigating family life in the city. I spoke about the very best free family activities in the city. I thought I would share these same tips with you all in case you were interested (and who among us isn't interested in awesome free things, right?)

Brunch's Worst Offenders... So Far
2010-11-25 19:09:00 If you live in Chicago, (the city, not the suburbs) you know that the weekends are to be cherished as an outlet to catch up on life outside of the daily grind. One of the best things about the weekends, aside from not waking up to an alarm, or a leisurely morning run by the lake, or a trip to Intelligentsia (no Spanish pronunciation, Clark), etc. is brunch. Perhaps you may have seen my earlier post, A Toast to Toast. Well, my friends, let me tell you, after an experience I had at a local brunch spot recently, I decided to out the worst of the worst brunch offenders. I'll start with the least offensive and end with the most nefarious. After some cajoling from a...

Edgewater Gets New Brunch Choice at m. henrietta
2010-09-17 16:33:00 With little to no fan-fare, m. henrietta quietly opened last week offering Edgewater a new brunch option. Occupying the space that used to be Standees, m. henrietta 1133 W Granville (sister restaurant to m. henry on Clark Street in Andersonville) offers Edgewater a delicious taste of Andersonville that we've long needed. Living in Edgewater I can tell you that weekend breakfast options, heck we've been waiting for Nookies for ever, are limited, so we couldn't wait to try out the newest kid on the block. We stopped by early Saturday morning to sample breakfast - and we weren't disappointed. There's not a lot of the menu, but that's not a bad thing! There were specials offered and there was plenty...

Spam Musubi for Brunch at Sunda?
2010-08-27 04:59:00 Last week, I was lucky enough to be chosen to take part in a "brunch experiment" for the trendy Asian hot spot Sunda. While some might fear the invitation to take part in an "experiment" at brunch, I felt this might be my calling. As a reward to devoted Twitter followers of Sunda (@sundachicago), we were invited to dine on some of their most popular brunch items while also acting as a focus group for some of their newest creations for the brunch scene. The Tempura French Toast, a signature of the Sunda brunch menu, was naturally a ubiqutous favorite of the table. When you take an already delectable breakfast staple like french toast and elevate it to the next...

RedEye Royalty Bottomless Mimosa Brunch
2010-06-10 01:46:00 Growing up, parents, teachers, and educational television programming all expound on the virtues of breakfast and its role as the most important meal of the day. Over the past couple of years, the rising surge in Sunday brunch threatens to oust breakfast from its position as our most celebrated meal and the RedEye Royalty bottomless mimosa brunch reinforced this movement. While breakfast distinguishes itself with its cornucopia of cereals, yogurts, eggs, and other classic hits, brunch relates more to camaraderie and good company (along with unlimited mimosas!).Last month, RedEye Royalty descended on Furama in Uptown to partake in discovering the wonders of dim sum brunch. This past Sunday at Deleece Grill Pub, we took full advantage of the idyllic weather...

Mother's Day Brunch With a Twist! Where Did You Go?
2010-05-09 22:19:00 So, we're just about four shows into our run... Time to take the family to one of the Best spots, right? I gave my wife Amanda her choice for Mother's Day and without hesitation, she said, "The Spoke!" So off we went to the Twisted Spoke, 501 N. Ogden, for some comfort food beyond belief and a Bloody Mary that makes you want to slap your Mama (is that inappropriate for today?).Our youngest son Max fit right in... Lots of stuff to look at, including Nikki, the friendly bartender with purple hair and awesome ink! But, like his parents, he loved the food! Shawn Thomson and his staff were as friendly as ever which was further validation for naming it...

Inside: Late-Night / Early Morning Brunch at Twisted Spoke
2010-02-23 23:00:00 Brunch starts earlier at the Twisted Spoke, 501 N. Ogden. After they close down Saturday night "Smut and Eggs" business (Yes, 70's porn on the flatscreen while you go sunny-side-up), the joint re-opens for what is one of the best spots for gluttony. If you've never been, the entire place is a giant conversation piece. I won't bore you with the details... go see for yourself! While a good portion of regulars are bike enthusiasts, it's a friendly crowd that draws an eclectic mix of patrons. Dinks, dorks, hippies, right-wingers, liberals and everyone inbetween gather on the corner of Ogden and Grand for a nap-inducing feast. Check out what we gorged ourselves on:...

33 Club launches brunch; Gemini cuts back
2009-10-09 22:48:00 33 Club, Jerry Kleiner's newish Old- Town spot, launches brunch this weekend. We were lukewarm on the dinner offerings, which suffered from some basic execution problems, but we believe in second chances--especially when they involve a fried egg and gorgonzola BLT. In other brunch news, Jason Paskewitz's new Lincoln Park spot Gemini Bistro is cutting back brunch service to Sundays only....
Brunch and patio (finally!) debut at the Red Canary
2009-09-15 19:06:00 If you haven't been back to the Red Canary since it opened earlier this year, here's your excuse for a return trip: The much-delayed backyard patio opens tonight at 5 p.m. and will stay open until 11 p.m. nightly (midnight on Saturdays). Granted the weather stays as nice as it is currently, it'll stay open through mid-October. Debuting along with the ivy-draped patio is weekend brunch, featuring bottomless mimosa and bloody mary bars ($18 and $20, respectively) set up near the exit to the outdoor space. Chef Rick Spiros keeps the eggs benedict traditional, but puts his own twists on biscuits and gravy (made with aged cheddar and fennel sausage gravy) and chilaquiles (made with chorizo, fontina cheese and jalapeno cream). If got...

Brunch at Legume Bistro, Pittsburgh, PA
2009-07-31 15:35:00 I came across some pictures from a while back when a bunch of us went to Legume Bistro for Sunday brunch. Legume Bistro is located at 1113 S. Braddock Ave in the Regent Square area of Pittsburgh, PA. They are a small family operated restaurant. What caught our attention was their small but unique menu offering Italian and French inspired American cuisine. Their dinner menus change every day and they post them on their website by 5pm. Their brunch menu also varies week to week. The dishes they offer depend on the ingredients available to them. Most of the ingredients they use are organic and locally grown, with the exception of a few delicious ingredients that might not be available locally.Normally, their brunch runs from 10am to 2pm, but one that day they had to close early to prepare for a special dinner. Here's what we had for brunch that day. For a beverage, I ordered the French press coffee.I couldn't help but notice how adorable this cream container was. The waiter told us th...

Sunday Brunch Headlines Placeholder
2009-03-22 17:13:00 I was up late roaming the Scottish Highlands with a sexy yet sensitive warrior cheiftan. And girl needs her beauty sleep, you know. Let's start your Sunday off right with some terrifying news about Rich Harden and his magic ass: GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Rich Harden, scratched from Friday's game because he was ill, will pitch in the Cubs' Minor League camp on Wednesday to get back on track for the regular season. Harden is expected to throw 70-75 pitches on Wednesday, which is an off-day for the rest of the Major League camp. "If he's ready by the time the season starts, he's ready," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Saturday, "and if not, we've got [Sean] Marshall, who's ready, and we can throw [Harden] into the fifth-starter spot and give Harden more time." Um. . . .not ready? Why wouldn't he be ready? He was scratched because of the flu, right? RIGHT? He he, it's not like it's his . . .arm or (gulp). . . SHOULDER or . . ELBOW or like HIS BUTT or anything, right? I ...

2008-11-09 17:08:00 Cuban not giving up He's gonna fight for his right to party. From the Trib: Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban remains as interested as ever in buying the Cubs, dismissing a report that Major League Baseball might not want him as an owner. According to a Chicago Sun-Times report that cited a baseball source, there was "zero chance" of Cuban taking over the Cubs. The Sun-Times source said the Internet billionaire would meet with resistance in trying to get approval from Major League Baseball. Cuban wouldn't comment on the report before the Mavericks played Denver on Friday night. "There's no reason to comment on anonymous comments from unsolicited sources. I mean it's ridiculous," Cuban said. Trib may sell smaller share of Cubs We may have to live with Sam Zell awhile longer.
