Brussels-Capital Region ranked first for HRSTC in Europe
2008-07-20 17:23:00
The stock of human resources in science and technology (HRST) can be used as an indicator of the development of the knowledge-based economy in the EU. The core group of this population — known as HRSTC — can be considered as active stakeholders in the development of knowledge and technological innovation. This core group is often well represented in capital regions. In the 2006 regions ranking with the largest shares of HRSTC among the regional labour force in 2006, Oslo og Akershus (NO) was the region with the highest proportion of HRSTC (33%) among the regional labour force. Stockholm (SE), Province Brabant Wallon (BE), Inner London (UK) and Utrecht (NL) followed with shares of between 27% and 28%. Thirteen of the 25 leading regions were capital regions. Belgian regions were more strongly represented than others.Considering all economic sectors, the leading region in 2006 was Brussels-Capital Region (BE) with 29.1%. Berlin (DE) and Île de France (FR) followed...
Flip-through: Brussels, Ferries, Notre Dame, and Ryanair madness
2008-06-06 18:28:00
Some of the stories that grabbed our attention this week: Brussels and Bruges Back from his trip to Belgrade for the Eurovision song contest, Alex of Spendthrift Shoestring jaunted off to Brussels on the Eurostar to see how the city has changed since his last visit in 2002. We enjoyed his musings on the city’s neighborhood and vibe, having just visited Brussels in March. And yes, Alex, we also have a fondness for the Use-It fold-out maps to Brussels (and five other Belgian cities). These map-guides are, according to their creators, ”no-non-sense, non commercial, made by locals,” and thus offer some candid (and amusing!) advice. When we visited Bruges, we “Used-It” nightly to find the city’s cool restaurants, bars, and cafes. You can print your own guide off from their website. European Ferries BudgetTravel.com reminded us yesterday to consider taking ferries between European cities. Ferries offer a fun and cheap transportation option around muc...
Brussels: Four chocolate shops to splurge for
2008-06-05 17:37:00
According to the experts, Belgians eat approximately 20 pounds of chocolate per year. (That’s the size of our family cat!)There’s no arguing then that we’re far behind on our cocoa intake and must catch up. We’re happy to know that while we’re getting our fix, too, we can also tour many of the chocolatiers (called chocolateries in Brussels)—where exhibits, tours of the facilities, and workshops in candy-making abound. So, make sure your sweet tooth doesn’t go sour and check out four of Brussel’s best bet chocolate shops. 1) Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate 9, Rue de la Tete d’Or Only a short distance from the Grand Place, the Brussel’s museum of chocolate will not only show you how chocolate is made, but teach you how to make some of your own. We’d opt for the demonstration titled, “How To Make a Praline” (everyday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)  It’s €5 to enter; €4 for students. 2) Planete Chocol...

Jeanneken Pis, Brussels
2008-05-27 07:32:00
Jeanneke Pis is a modern fountain and statue in Brussels, which forms a counterpoint in gender terms to the city’s trademark Manneken Pis, as it does aurally and geographically, being about the same distance away on the other side of the Grand Place / Grote Markt. It was made by Denis-Adrien Debouvrie in 1985 and erected in 1987 and endowed with its own instant legend, the better to amuse strollers. This half-metre-high statue of blue-grey limestone depicts a little girl with her hair in bunches, squatting and urinating, apparently very contentedly. It is located on the east side of the Faith Alley, a narrow dead-end street some 30 metres long leading northwards off the restaurant-packed Rue des Bouchers / Beenhouwersstraat. It is unsurprisingly much less well known than its male counterpart, being a new addition instead of a centuries-old symbol of the city. Not famous like other statue, but Brussels has many toruist attractions. GPS travel coordinates: 50° 50′ 55″ N, 4Â...

Brussels and Celtic Music
2008-04-26 12:48:00
The Brussels Brontë Blog posts a chronicle (with lots of nice pictures) of the recent Brussels Brontë Weekend. A total and spectacular success:After nearly 6 months of planning, organising and promoting our weekend, this year started off with a Brontë evening in Waterstone’s, the English bookshop in Brussels, who kindly provided a specially set-up space and provided drinks and nibbles. This was our test, to see how many would turn up to our event this time. We were actually quite surprised to see a great turn-out; some 60 people turned up, and some had to stand, as the chairs were all taken! (...)Saturday included a one-day conference entitled "The Brontë sisters in Brussels" organised by the public library Bibliothèque des Riches Claires, with assistance from us. This event was mainly down to them and so we had to wait and see how it would all go. (...)With still more people turning up for this day, the number of attendants was about 100. To our surprise the mayor of Brussel...

Gay Brussels Belgium
2008-04-21 19:21:00
Summer and Gay Pride! While June is the biggest month for Pride, some cities and countries will observe pride earlier or later. In Brussels, they will celebrate the week of May 16th.  We have never been - but are thinking of going this year...any advice from any readers???Belgium is a small country (11,730 square Miles, the size of Maryland) with a population of  10 million. There are three languages (Dutch, French and German). However, English is widely spoken I am told. The three regions (Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels) have self-government in many spheres. Like most of Europe, Belgium has retained its old-world charm in the preservation of its ancient buildings and historical traditions. Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the administrative centre of the European Union. This has earned the city the title of the Capital of Europe.I found quite a long list of gay bars, discos and sauna's online @ Trabel.  It says the most of the gay action is all centered around...
Rogozin Stays on Message in Brussels
2008-04-21 15:27:00
He was once a firebrand nationalist politician who led rallies against illegal immigration, met indicted Serbian war criminals and ran a campaign ad that seemed to compare dark-skinned southerners to garbage. Now, Dmitry Rogozin lives in a brick house located in a quiet, leafy neighborhood of Brussels. Inside, only a Russian flag, a picture of St. ...
Puppet fun in Brussels bar
2008-04-20 20:30:00
Affectionately referred to by regulars as "Poech", Poechenellekelder, Flemish for puppet cellar, is a friendly, authentically Belgian bar.The Brussels haunt serves a great selection of draft beer, as well as an interesting range of food.Located a stone's throw from the Mannekin Pis statue, the pleasingly decorated venue features a number of antique decorations and a carved wooden bar. The Guardian describes the decor as "more like a surreal museum than a pub".Prices are reasonable and friendly locals and tourists interact in this lively venue, which serves snacks including a brawn and soft cheese on wheat bread.Manneken Pis, which literally means little man pee, is exactly that - a small bronze fountain sculpture of a little boy peeing. It is often dressed in different costumes, depending on the occasion. One of the Belgian capital's most famous landmarks, it has had a female equivalent called Jeanneke Pis since 1987.
Librairie Filigranes, Brussels
2008-04-19 13:06:00
Where? Brussels, BelgiumRecommended by: Christel VandenboschChristel said:"If there's one bookstore I should have to pick in Brussels, it's 'Filigranes'. It's open 365 days a year, you'll find books, magazines, music, a cup of tea or coffee, wine and book lovers all at the same spot. Of course, it's not as 'special' as Selexyz but you'll find 'a place to be' in multicultural Brussels."The first thing you should know about Filigranes is that the subtitle of their logo 365->365 actually has a meaning (probably not that hard to guess). Yes, this bookstore (considered by many to be the best bookstore in Brussels) is never closed.Filigranes is a primarily French language bookstore, but it also has a smaller English language section. Upon entering, turn to the right and take the stairs down. And although it's size is not that promising (the whole store occupies an impressive 1700 square meters...) the selection is very decent to say at least. Especially the fiction section go...

Brussels May Become Majority Muslim in 15-20 Years
2008-04-15 23:45:00
Sent to me by a source in Europe: Olivier Servaix, sociologist at Université catholique de Louvain, said in an interview to La Libre Belgique last week that Brussels, would have a Muslim majority in 15-20 years, due to the community’s high birth-rate. Brussels: Catholic Church Turned Into Mosque As Cardinal Leaves For Rome
2008-04-12 16:30:00
I came across this today. In Brussels Journal and Catholic Church ConservationIn the centre of Brussels, there is the beautiful Church of the Minimes . It contains a Chapel in the form of the Holy House of Loretto which was built at the same time as the Church. A house of low repute was demolished to make way for the Church and there used to be an inscription in the Church, "Where once stood a temple of Venus, now stands a shrine to Our Blessed Lady." But now can it be said?"Where once stood a shrine to Our Blessed Lady, now stands a mosque".The Chapel is now being desecrated by an occupation by a group of Kurds. They claim to be on hunger strike. Why choose a Catholic Church when there are so many other places in Belgium to protest? But is the Chapel now being used as a mosque?; the Vicariat of Brussels have neither confirmed nor denied this, despite several e-mails. The altar has been moved. The statue of Our Lady has been covered by a cloth in such a way that she is mostly hidden...
Brussels crush: Hotel la Madeleine
2008-04-10 18:46:00
Having read repeatedly that Brussels, as the center of the EU, was more ”politica-l” and “corporate” than “quaint European,” we anticipated streets filled with bankers and void of much character (save for a small central square and a famous statue of a boy urinating). Boy, were we wrong! From the bright, grafitti-lined streets to the yummy, chocolately waffles, steamed mussels, and frothy beer, we were drawn in. The locals were friendly, the artistic vibe apparent everywhere, and the multitude of architectural icons loomed—most distinctly in the medieval Grand Place—and all across the metropolis. And, we got a few crushes along the way. First up, Hotel La Madeleine. Hotel la Madeleine rue de la Montagne, 22  Doubles: €60-100  Ah, ma Madeleine. Rooms at this 2-star gem are decorated with a modern, artistic sensibility. Purple and beige walls are accented by sleek furnishings (lamps, wardrobes and desks), and bedspreads are luxurious...

Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889

It is now regarded as his masterpiece.Ensor kept The Entry of Christ into Brussels with him throughout his life, and as with many of his paintings, he made a number of alterations to it.This painting was not exhibited publicly until 1929. But Ensor displayed it prominently in his home and studio throughout his life.Ensor deals with the question: if Christ returned to Earth today, what would be the reaction ? Would there be any difference to what happene two thousand years ago ?Ensor reasoned that if Christ were to return to earth, modern commercial and political interests would certainly try to co-opt the event. Consider what happens when there is...
It Might Be Cold And Rainy In Brussels, BUT…
2008-03-11 20:03:00
There are some FAB budget hotels! After Day #2 of braving the elements (and more than a few tour groups in search of the adorably bizarre Manneken Pis), the Cheapo squad is armed with some great finds! We’ve found a 3 room chocolate-themed gem in the middle of town; a wild EU-inspired international themed hotel where each room is decorated in an individual country motif; a gorgeous 16 room charmer with a hoarse Jack Russel terrier named Mia who greets guests with a very low, raspy “woof”; heck, we even found the best Soupe de poisson for only 3.4 euros! (catch: you have to eat it while standing at a bar…and outside…and in the wind and rain…hmm, come to think of it, I have a slight sore throat…) We have many more hotels to inspect in Brussels before heading off to Bruges. Onward, Cheapos!

Dear readers, we’re packing our bags for Belgium, where we’ll be adding two new cities to the site! And we’re asking you for your advice! Now, we’re asking you for your tips! Have you been to Brussels? Bursting with something to say about Bruges? We’re compiling our list of independently-run hotels, bed and breakfasts, guesthouses, and pensions to review for both cities. In addition, we’d love t...

Pecha Kucha, Brussels, Jan 20, 2008
2008-01-13 16:01:00
Pecha Kucha, which is Japanese for the sound of conversation, is a series of show-and-tell evenings for designers, architects, artists and creatives, started by Klein Dytham architecture in Tokyo in 2003.  Since then, groups have sprung up in cities across the world (over 100 so far) and adopted the Pecha Kucha format: each presenter has 20 slides which are displayed for 20 seconds each.Pecha Kucha taps into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown. With the 20x20 format, presentations are concise, the interest level goes up, and more people get the chance to show their ideas. The Brussels format includes designers, architects, artists, scientists, fashion designers, photographers, musicians, and creative entrepreneurs. Braised Ginkgo Nuts with Purple Brussels Sprouts
2007-12-27 06:13:00
These sprouts are made with ginkgo nuts I harvested from the sidewalk in front of my building. I just cannot begin to tell you how long I have wanted to do this. Every year in late November, the ginkgo trees on my block shed pounds and pounds of edible and healthful nuts. The ginkgo nuts lie trodden underfoot because nobody knows what to do with them. The pulp of the outer hulls becomes very pungent as the nuts ripen and some folks just don?t care for that at all, but the nuts themselves do not have any unpleasant odor. For years now I have promised myself that I would one day prepare some home-gathered ginkgo nuts, but I had always let the season go by because I had no idea what to do with them, and I didn?t really feel like picking them up. They are pretty revolting. Two things made this year different. The first was my encouraging success with dried chestnuts, a nut similar to ginkgos, which made me eager to try other nutty vegetable dishes. The second was my heartbreakin...
Brussels Christmas Market
2007-12-24 13:36:00
We visited the Christmas market in Brussels yesterday and suggest you don't miss it. There is a large Christmas tree and live nativity scene on the Grand Place with real sheep. The Town hall is lit up in the dark accompanied by music. The Christmas market is around the Bourse so buy some traditional items and enjoy some Gluhwein or hot chocolate while you walk round. When you have finished, I recommend a drink and maybe something to eat in my favourite bar, Falstaff, in rue Henri Maus, next to the Bourse.

Underrated Brussels
2007-12-23 04:03:00
For me, including Brussels on my trip was a no-brainer. I love chocolate, I love waffles. How could I skip Brussels? Then I started reading message boards. People seemed to hate Brussels. It's dirty, there's nothing to do there, it's boring, blahblahblah. Rick Steves pushes nearby Brugge instead - Brussels isn't even in his "Best of Europe" book.Is Brussels the most exciting city in the world, or even in Europe? No of course not. But it's quaint, small and accessible, charming, and quirky. Where else can you make a lunch out of fries (look at the picture, click for a bigger one, just look at them!!!), a waffle, and chocolate samples and say it was among the better meals you can remember in a long time? I like to think of it this way. Any city that has as its symbol or 'mascot' a statue of a little peeing boy (Manneken Pis) must be a fun place. And let's not forget two of its more notable museums - the Musical Instruments museum and a museum for Comic Strips. How can people s...
Holiday travel
2007-12-18 11:21:00
Things have been awfully busy the past couple of months. There just wasn't any traveling to report but we did discover a few lakes just south of Munich that I wanted to share. That will be another post for another day. For now I am completely stoked that we are going north this holiday. Way north. First we will travel to Belgium and meet our friend for a short tour of Brussels [in German, Brüssel]. I'll have to brush up on understanding broken English because I've have no clue how to speak French, Flemish or Dutch. Is Flemish Dutch or is Dutch Flemish or are they completely different languages, ugh?! Yet, I'm looking forward to Belgium "french" fries, waffles, chocolate, and beer. Ew, so healthy. Then we head to an island on the German coast of the North Sea, Amrum, a North Frisian Island. I will get to ride on a ferry over the North Sea and see large sand dunes and mud flats. The language should be cool, a mix of English and German. I presume that on the menu will be an ass...
15 Facts About Brussels Sprouts
2007-12-14 23:44:00
Brussels sprouts are native to northern Europe. They are part of the Brassica family of vegetables, which also includes cabbage, broccoli, kale, and collard greens. They get their name from the fact that they were widely cultivated around Brussels, Belgium during the 16th century. They were introduced to England and France in the 19th century. According to a 2002 survey, Brussels sprouts are the most hated vegetable in Britain. French settlers in Louisiana introduced Brussels sprouts to America in the 1800s. Commercial production began in 1925 on the Louisiana delta. By 1939, Brussels sprouts were being produced in central California. Today, almost all U.S. production of Brussels sprouts happens in California. Other top Brussels sprouts producers include Canada, The Netherlands, England, and Germany. Like broccoli and some other members of the Brassica family, Brussels sprouts contain something called sinigrin, a glucosinate that may prevent colon cancer according t...
