Looks like Bryan Singer is setting his sights on the Big Blue Boyscout. In a recent interview he states pretty clearly that the sequel to Superman Returns is well underway. SuperheroHype quotes Singer:â€œIâ€™m just getting back with writers after the strike. Weâ€™re just in the development phase. Iâ€™m starting to develop a sequelâ€¦with the intention of directing it,â€ he told the magazine.About the negative reaction to the first filmâ€™s focus on the drama instead of the action, Singer added, â€œThe first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic filmâ€¦ And now that the characters are established, thereâ€™s really an opportunity to up the threat levels.â€ Now before we all get on the barking list against Superman Returns, I wasnâ€™t overly impressed with it. Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh Off Superman Sequel? A sequel to Superman Returns has been in limbo since the beginning. Warner Bros was unhappy with how the film performed, and fans were unhappy with the lack of action and unnecessary out-of-cannon third act plot twist. But director Bryan Singer showed up at Comic Con expressing his desire to make a sequel that would give the fans what they wanted. Warner later announced that Superman: Man of Steel was given the official go-ahead, and a June 2009 release date was touted. Then Singer got distracted by the Tom Cruise WWII film, and a Justice League movie appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Rumor: Bryan Singer Won't Be Directing Superman: Man of Steel? Variety blogger Anne Thompson wrote a piece last week titled Dark Knight's Nolan and DC Comics Pics (thanks for the link, too, Anne!) that most of us missed in the Holiday haze. Her last paragraph is the most discomforting, but from what I can tell, it may be more speculation than truth. It reads, "speaking of DC Comics pics, it is highly unlikely that Bryan Singer will return to shoot the next Superman movie." Wait, what?! This would be disastrous if it were the case! Not everyone liked Superman Returns, but if they (or specifically, if Bryan) pulls this again, then it's going to be another X-Men 3! And everyone know how that turned out. I first saw this in front of a Lions for Lambs screening just the other night and damn am I excited for it! What isn't to like about X-Men 2 director Bryan Singer taking on a WWII action thriller starring Tom Cruise?! Although Valkyrie looks quite awesome to the fullest extent, I'm not sold on its style yet. Apparently the story is split into two parts, the first introducing the characters and letting you understand how they could assassinate Hitler, and the second is the actual plan in action.
