BUCKSHOT AND 9th WONDER-?The Formula?
2008-08-18 15:23:00 ?The Formula? is the follow-up to one of the greatest underground grime albums of all time, 2005?s?Chemistry.? Before I get into the meat of the review, I?ll get this out: No, it?s not as good as?Chemistry.? But that album is a classic. And ?The Formula? can sit proudly beside it on any headz shelf.After the intro track, which has a good groove but doesn?t go anywhere, the album jumps into ?Ready(Brand New Day),? which has chipmunk funk on the hook but otherwise features 9th Wonder?s usual inspirational, laid back beats.The big change here is in Buckshot. He?s still got the same low-key flow (he never shouts, never raises his voice, never spits quick or urgent), but his message isn?t as gritty as it has been in the past.In fact, quite a few songs border on RnB. But Buck proves himself to be versatile--he's no Cool J. Buckshot is the leader of the infamous Boot Camp Clik and the legendary group Black Moon.9th Wonder's production is on point for the entire album. His sounds somewhere between Kanye West and Hi-Tek. There are a lot of strings and some sped up soul samples.Not surprisingly Buckshot is on his game as well. He mostly rhymes about romance and girls. Never is this more exemplified than in "Only For You (Lou)". Joen has released Fauna 1.0 Final(ly) - I doubt Andy’s response carries much weight for wordpress.com after a year and a half, but hey, fauna’s still a great theme. Also overdue, but less so: Movable Type OS has been released. WP-super-cache and MT-Burn plugins make it less different from WordPress than it used to be. It’s still great to see competition. Especially in the area of database agnosticism. This may be my last post of the year. As of Monday I’m off to spend the holidays in England and Belgium. When I return, the WordPress-powered re-launch of Blueprint’s website should be live. It’s looking pretty hot, but there’s still a lot of work left. Eric and I will be writing resources to help clients understand what they can do with their WordPress sites in the blog, and they should be pretty useful to anyone just starting out with WordPress.
