Hungary Property Grand Prix
2008-08-04 19:00:00
Sunday's Grand Prix in Hungary certainly wasn't short of surprising events. The race started out uneventful. Massa was leading the field, followed by Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen in third. Disaster struck for Massa though when he suddenly lost a seemingly clear home run due to engine failure only three laps from the closing line. Hamilton ...
CNN Adds Video of Riots in Budapest to Report of Riots in Belgrade

Bridges [16]: Budapest Chain bridge
2008-05-29 17:35:00
One of the famous bridges of Europe - and justifiably so. During our recent holiday, I crossed this bridge for the second time in my life, and I am still impressed by it. The Szechenyi Chain Bridge, to give it its full name, is a suspension bridge that spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest, the western and eastern sides of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Budapest, and was opened in 1849. The bridge was designed by the English engineer William Tierney Clark in 1839, after Count István Széchenyi's initiative in the same year, with construction supervised locally by Scottish engineer Adam Clark (no relation). It is a larger scale version of William Tierney Clark's earlier Marlow Bridge, across the River Thames in Marlow, England (information from wikipedia).

Budapest Night Out: Wine, goulash, dance floor
2008-04-24 17:39:00
Get more bang for your forint with our Cheapo-tested tips for a night out in Budapest. Kari Hoerchler, who recently prowled the city’s streets hunting down hotels for us, also found out how to have fun… Start the night with a free drink. A cheapo could get a jump start on the evening with a free drink at the Matyas’ wine fountain in the Labyrinth of Castle Hill. However, we found it more efficient and enjoyable to fork out the HUF 8000 (roughly €31) to sample over 50 wines at the House of Hungarian Wines above ground. Get your restaurant row on. Ramble on over to the Liszt ter, the veritable restaurant row of Budapest. People watching is free of charge, not to mention fun. And, frugal dining spots abound. A fresh variety of cocktails, sandwiches and salads are available at Café Vian. ‘Pest favorites, including goulash and fruit soup, are served at Menza (which also serves international fare, like pasta and salads). Both restaurants run a tab of abo...

Kylie vs. Budapest
2008-04-18 20:37:00
Weird title right? And no, its not the title of a remix :POn the 17th May Kylie Minogue will be in Bucharest, Romania to sing for the first time here ( I think), a concert that takes part of her World Tour called Kylie X.A friend of mine suggested we should go, you know, one-time opportunity in life sort of thing, but since I always looked up at Kylie as an wannabe Madonna object (no offense for those who worship the Australian dwarf) I said, as Amy Winehouse would say , "No, no, no no ...."!My second alternative is to go on a trip to Budapest, our blood enemy for centuries, I've heard its a great city. Not to mention that the entire 2 days trip cost the same as Kylie's concert which btw is very cheap, the VIP seats cost around 85$ :DI went with Budapest, 'cause as I've heard, its a free city, a modest Amsterdam city, sex bars, gay-lesbian discos, strip bars etc etc :PWhat are you doing on Labor Day (1st May)?

Here’s a quick Tuesday flip-through: Flight Reading When we can’t hop on a plane and jet to Europe, we tend to pick up a good read to quell the urge. So, we were happy to be reminded by The Intelligent Traveler that “The Best American Travel Writing”, 2007 edition, which hit bookstores last fall, is chock full of essays that will take you there. Travel Gal Pals We’re excited for the launch of Budget Travel’s new magazine, Girlfriend Getaways. Gay Budapest and Mr. Gay Europe
2008-02-25 19:06:00
I think I was lived in Europe in a past life! All my life I have been drawn to the romance of Europe - something about Europe resonates in me.  I have only been once, to Germany, but this year plan to go to London, Amersterdam and Prague! While doing my research though, there are so many places I want to see. So we'll be covering some of the places I have been reading about and being told about!BUDAPEST!  I met a porn star last year who filmed a movie there and he said Budapest has the hottest men! And this summer, MR. GAY EUROPE  finals will be held in Budapest in July. Who is Mr. Gay Europe?   The Mr. Gay Europe Pageant is much more than a beauty contest. The young man selected will be more than just a pretty face and a nice body. While physical beauty will be part of the judges' considerations, it is a young man's inner beauty that will make the difference in their selection.   Mr Gay Europe - celebrates the gay European man and pays tribute to the di...
A Report from Budapest
2008-02-11 15:06:00
The long awaited report from Budapest, Hungary is finally here. In the past few days we've been adding the recently visited bookstores in Budapest, but we figure all of them deserve another mention as a part of this report - sort of a way to circle Budapest as a bookstore rich city which deserves a special mention in our Guide. We should thus start chronologically, with Red Bus Bookstore which we've found a long time (ok, prehaps not AS long) before Bookstore Guide had been conceived. It all happened somewhere in June last year while we were wandering about Budapest. Unfortunately, the bookstore was closed at the time of our discovery (either it was Sunday or past 6pm, or perhaps both) but we made sure we came back a couple of months later and we were left breathless both by the prices and the selection. Red Bus Bookstore is one of our favorites to this very day since it will be very hard to beat the impression it had left on us. Not once had we left without a book. Or two. Althoug...
Bestsellers, Budapest
2008-02-08 16:52:00
Where? Budapest, HungaryVisited: February 2008This is the last bookstore we visited during our stay in Budapest. Bestsellers is an exclusively foreign language bookstore and it only stocks new books. The stock of Bestsellers amounts to more than 10 thousand titles. One part of the store is reserved for a wide offer of magazines and newspapers in English and partly in French. We also appreciated the selection of books in the humanities section, which contains titles on psychology, cultural studies, philosophy, politics, international relations, religion or sociology. There also is a history section, with a special focus on Hungarian history, but also on the Central European region in general and the Balkans. The bookstore stocks numerous books by Hungarian authors, which were translated into English. The travel section offers a wide selection of all the usual travel guides, even of the unusual destinations. The fiction section can be found in the back part of the store. The offer cont...
D2K, Budapest
2008-02-07 21:38:00
Where? Budapest, HungaryVisited: February 2008This is another bookstore we stumbled upon during our visit to Budapest. Unlike all the other bookstores in the city, the D2K bookstore has a very narrowly defined field of interest. It focuses uniquely on books related to design.First of all, the owners of this bookstore deserve praise for being brave enough and starting a project like this. Since no other people entered the bookstore during our visit, we assume that D2K probably serves the needs of a smaller number of specific customers. However, this is not due to a lack of interesting titles on the shelves, but probably also to the other negative factor in play - the location of the store.Their growing collection currently comprises of several hundred titles and each one of them is a visual delight. We found books on graphic design, photography, many books on architecture, calligraphy, typography, posters and many other related subjects. The vast majority of their books are in Englis...
Pendragon Books, Budapest
2008-02-07 19:48:00
Where? Budapest, HungaryVisited: February, 2008This bookstore specializes in English books only and the books themselves are very neatly organized by sections in two large rooms of the bookstore. It seemed to us that their focus were books on art and architecture but these are accompanied by a great number of fiction books (for example, there was a huge choice on particular writers such as Rushdie), children's books and travel guides. We tried finding more information on the bookstore itself but since it is probably a recently opened bookstore, their website is still under construction. The best way to find out more about the bookstore is to visit it by yourselves. We're sure you won't be disappointed, especially if you are looking for a particular book because, just judging by the number of them, they'll surely have it.About the bookstoreLocated not so close to the center of Budapest, Pendragon Books, probably named after a novel called The Pendragon Legend by Antal Szerb (writ...
Budapest tip: Confections of a Cheapo
2008-02-07 19:06:00
Back in day, it was fairly typical to see many old Hungarian men and woman hanging out well into the night at a traditional coffee house in Budapest. Ideas were discussed and many pastries were consumed. Today, it’s hard to narrow in on some of these ancient gems (no, we’re not talking about the old men and women), but they do still exist. And, the best part? An old coffee house or confectionery in Budapest can make for a fantastic cheapo’s night out. For the price of a cup of coffee and a yummy confection, you’ll be stepping back in time, connecting with Hungarian culture and often hanging out in a lavish turn-of-the-century building. Here are five of our favorites: 1) Angelika           Â- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â -               Â- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â -               Â- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â -      I. Bookstation, Budapest
2008-02-07 16:36:00
Where? Budapest, HungaryVisited: February 2008This bookstore turned out to be a very positive surprise of our Budapest trip. Although it is mostly referred to as a primarily internet based bookstore, this is a huge understatement. Bookstation is a bookstore offering a mixture of carefully selected new books (mostly remainder) and loads of second hand books. It focuses uniquely on books in foreign languages, with the English section being the most prominent, but it also has a considerable German, French and Spanish section. Especially the French section deserves to be mentioned, since such a selection of second hand French books at such prices is very rare in non-francophone parts of Europe. All in all, the Bookstation is the home of more than 30 thousand titles. The prices of the second hand books are very affordable, mostly around 5€. The English stock comprises of several sections (though they were not labeled) - fiction, biographies, social sciences, history, travel and also the...
Headline: Diligent Bankers' present in Budapest
2008-02-07 14:14:00
One of the news stories on our intranet has a highly ambiguous headline:Diligent Bankers' present in BudapestBefore you read on, I invite you to guess the main thrust of the story using only the headline as guidance. If it helps (which it doesn't), the headline was accompanied by a picture of a smiling woman.Ready? OK, here are my own wrong guesses and then the correct answer:At first I thought the headline might be referring to a gift given to or by a group of bankers. But why are they diligent? And why do they deserve a capped-up 'B'? Perhaps there is an organisation called 'Diligent Bankers'...My second interpretation was that the same group of bankers (or organisation) is simply present in Budapest, for some unknown reason. And of course, that would fail to explain the apostrophe.Only upon reading the story did I learn that the headline referred to a presentation given in Budapest by employees of a banking publication – the title of which could, at a push, be shortened t...
Invitan a Charlize Theron a Budapest

Charlize Theron: 'I adored Turkey....and its capital, Budapest'
2008-01-23 15:22:00
She has a reputation as one of Hollywood's more intelligent actresses, but Charlize Theron showed a shaky grasp of geography when discussing her travels. The blonde Oscar winner talked passionately about visiting Budapest and mentioned the Hungarian capital three times by name in an interview. Except she meant the Turkish city of Istanbul, which she visited with her boyfriend actor Stuart Townsend while the pair "backpacked" around the world. The 32-year-old South African actress said: "We went to Turkey. When we got over there, we rented a car and we drove all the way to Budapest. By the time we got to Budapest it was like the Cannes Film Festival, I'd never seen anything like it."

GOODBYE BUDAPEST - APRIL 2006"PARLIAMENT - After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867, in which a dual monarchy was created, Hungary wrote its own constitution. The Parliament was built between 1895 and 1902 and it is said that it was at the time the largest parliamentary building in the world (268 meters long and 123 meters wide). The Seat of Democracy is hosted in a building that is one of the most impressive in Budapest, and surely my favourite!""MAIN STAIRCASE - The Parliament building includes more than 20 km of staircases. The main staircase is absolutely stunning""DOME - The elegant dome has a height of 96 meters. Actually, 96 seems to be a very important figure in this building; it's said to be related to the millennium commemorations of 1896""GOLD - The decorations needed about 40 kg 22-23 karat gold""CROWN - When Stephen became King of Hungary on Christmas Day in the year 1000, Pope Sylvester II made him the gift of a crown. During World War II, the crown was taken out...
