Inter-personal relationships in Buddhist perspective
2008-05-31 11:34:00
Inter-personal relationships in Buddhist perspective By Professor Chandima Wijebandara,www.sundayobserver.-lk (The writer is BRS Graduate of School of Buddhist Studies, Singapore ) As Aristotle has rightly stated that man is a social animal. Men wish to live in society, enjoy companionship, and happy to be crowded by fellow beings. Brahmajalasutta maintains that the initial feeling the first being to reappear in the present age of world reformation fell was loneliness. He wanted company. So, according to the Buddhist story also, the need of company and consequential necessity of interpersonal relations is ingrained in living beings. The Buddha?s practised (and, of course, made the followers also practise) seclusion only till they attained spiritual heights. After the attainments, they return to society to be in service for the benefit of many (bahujana). The Buddha once said ?I, Udayi, sometimes, stay crowded by monks and nuns, lay di...
How to be a good Buddhist
2008-05-20 16:14:00
Buddhists believe that all beings are capable of attaining Buddhahood. Hence he will practise the teaching of Buddha as best as he can to get rid of three things that cause suffering. These are avarice, hatred and delusion. A good Buddhist will try not to be greedy and avoid taking things that do not belong to him or resorting to cheating others to gain more money. Donating things and money to the needy is another way of practising not to be greedy. As for cutting down on hatred, he will try to forgive others and treat others as if they are his close relatives in past lives. Getting rid of delusion needs the understanding of the true nature of things. If he can always remind himself that all things are in constant flux and nothing is constant and that every phenomenon involves cause and effect, he will have got rid of delusion. Meditation is one way of achieving peace of mind, leading to enlightenment. For those who have too many things to trouble their mind, chanting the name o...

*Image: http://funlok.org/2008/04-01/bu-ddhist-nokia-phone-009.jpg This shiny and pretty gold phone is a modified Nokia N95 that’s been decked out in a Buddhist theme. It looks both enlightened and at peace with the universe. This is Buddha bling if I’ve ever seen it. (I don’t believe I have.) It’s got a Buddha on the back, and fancy imagery all over. It’s onboard custom wallpapers and ringtones complete the theme. It’s pretty awesome looking and if you’re Buddhist, even more awesome I would think. Unfortunately, it’s only in China and not currently available to westerners. Pretty neat. It just goes to show you that cell phones don’t have to be boring and void of personality. The hypothesis of non-self in Buddhist philosophy
2008-04-20 22:36:00
The hypothesis of non-self in Buddhist philosophy By Dr. Tilokasundari Kariyawasam- Daily MirrorThe individual is nama and rupa (mind and matter). In Buddhist terminology it is treated as one unit. In the Abhidhammma, matter is fairly extensively dealt with and it is analyzed into 28 factors. They are aspects rather than factors of elements. Matter becomes food for the mind, as mind is the reaction to contact. It is the process of becoming which is also the process of ceasing, of birth and of death. There is a dependent simultaneous origination. As such, thought becomes materialized and matter conceptualized, which makes as it appears, a phenomenon (ruppati ti rupam). They are appearances as they appear to the human mind. Thus matter is energy without substance and mind is energy without an entity. Thus what is ?apparent? is only a phenomenon. All ...

Buddhist prayers for the dying
2008-04-16 09:41:00
I often get asked, what people can do during the last days of a loved one. Below is some simply advice for anyone currently dealing with death. What to do when someone is dying Generally speaking, just having good thoughts and memories of your loved one will be helpful both to you and your loved one(s). Getting upset, crying or getting angry, will only serve to make things worse. A persons state of mind at the time of death is important for a good rebirth. Therefore it is best to help the dying person remain calm and happy. Reminding them of events that will only cause problems is not a skillful action. So try to avoid this as much as possible. If you feel so inclined, you and if possible, the dying person can meditate on compassion and loving-kindness for all sentient beings. Start off the meditation by not focusing on a friend, as this can cause people to get upset and attachment to arise. Think about someone like a work friend or someone similar. Someone that you know and ...

What do George Soros and Buddhist bodhisattvas have in common?
2008-03-08 21:56:00
Awhile back I was introduced to the concept of the “five supernatural perceptions” or “superknowledges,”- achieved by bodhisattvas as a pinnacle of achievement in meditation and understanding in Buddhism. I had cause to reflect on this recently while reading George Soros’ 2006 book, “The Age of Fallibility.” If it seems odd to connect a famous financier and philanthropist with mystical powers gained through enlightenment and transcendence, don’t worry–it is odd. But there’s a common key that I found, and that is the key of flexibility in philosophy. Soros devotes the book to exploring and questioning the larger philosophical frames that enabled America to buy into such absurd concepts as “The War on Terror” without any questioning, breaking it down using his oft-discussed “theory of reflexivity,” the essence of which I’ll quote here: And that is the starting point of my theory, the the...

Buddhist priests hope old-fashioned letters help save the suicidal

A group of 15 priests in the metropolitan area started accepting consultations from those who were contemplating suicide earlier this month in the hope that they can help the troubled individuals by writing them letters."E-mails and phone calls can convey your feelings right away, but letters make writers stop and ponder to come to terms with their feelings. As we priests are at temples where time goes by slowly, we can be more open with those who are thinking about suicide by writ ...
A Meditation on Presidential Faith
2008-01-08 13:12:00
By Barbara Brotman of the Chicago Tribune, December 14, 2007 Moderator: Governor, some voters have expressed concern about your faith. How would you respond to them?Former Gov. Mitt Dharma: I want to assure the American public that while my religion will never interfere with the performance of my office, I am a true Buddhist. I believe that life is suffering, that suffering is caused by desire and that it is possible to eliminate desire and suffering and thus achieve nirvana. My fellow Buddhists can rest assured that I am one of them.Former Gov. Mike Anapanasati: I'd like to say that I respect Gov. Dharma and his beliefs, whatever they may be. Far be it from me to question another man's Buddhism. But let me just say that I have spent my life trying to follow the eightfold path. I believe the American people are looking for a mindful and meditative leader. I am mindful; I am meditative; and I believe I can lead this contemplative nation into a great future.Former Sen. Fred Koan: Fo...

Buddhist Cigarettes
2007-12-09 03:36:00
Yesterday, I saw a monk smoking a cigarette. I got to thinking and I realized that he must know that finals time is nearing for many university students in the U.S. Therefore, he must have been trying to radiate a sense of calm and relaxation to the thousands of students who are currently stressed out as they prepare for finals.Obviously, I am kidding. However, it does highlight the fact that monks are people too! If you are ever in Thailand (or anywhere for that matter), do NOT be afraid to talk to monks. If they are free, they are quite happy to share a cup tea (or cigarette?) with you and have a conversation.I'll be spending the next three days at Wat Pa Pai in Doi Saket. Enjoy your day!
