Lack of Budgeting Causes Poverty?
2009-04-12 08:48:00
Recently, there are quite a few people losing jobs and going into debts. However, there is nothing surprising about that. In fact, the surprising thing is that a lot of those who get into real big problems are not the really poor folks, but rather those once-rich highly-paid executives. It is bad to lose jobs for anyone, ...

'Tis the Season to be...Budgeting???
2008-12-24 01:28:00
Anyone else out there trying to get their budgets done before year-end?I never thought that when I started my new job in August, I would spend almost all of my time with my nose buried in a spreadsheet. But all kinds of things needed to be modelled so that we could try to put a realistic budget in place - the recently implemented compensation structure, target income based on consultant utilisation, profit margins, cost allocations, etc. Then there were all of the scenarios - the budget for the target income that I thought was realistic based on capacity. The budget for the discounted target income that the Board thought was realistic. The budget for the discounted discounted target income that now seems realistic due to the severity of the economic downturn...It doesn't help that we budget as six divisions around the world plus head office in four different currencies. In four months, I've generated more than 80 spreadsheets. I honestly couldn't believe it when I counted them al...

Very cool (FREE) financial tracking/budgeting tool!!!
2008-06-11 06:09:00
I recently ran across a VERY cool financial planning/budgeting tool and thought I would share it with you. It paints a very clear picture of your finances and the best part is that it is FREE and online! There's nothing to download, update, etc. and your data is available anywhere with internet! I've been playing with it for several days now and, basically, it goes out whenever you log-in and pulls data from your checking and savings accounts, your credit cards, your investment accounts and more. Then, it makes the data all easy to see, either as individual accounts or combining all of your accounts/transactions into one view. It further breaks all of the transactions down into categories and even charts your spending! Have you ever wondered how much you spend at coffee shops or on gas? How about on fast food or shopping? This tool will tell you... Have you ever wondered if there were better credit cards with better interest rates and/or reawrds? This...

Budgeting for Unexpected Expenses
2008-05-23 16:04:00
Unexpected expenses are just an expense with uncertainty attachedUnexpected expenses can really hinder your saving or debt repayment efforts. You have your budget carefully planned and meticulously detailed and thought out. Then, out of the blue, pops an annoying significant and unexpected expense and re-shuffles everything.I?ll be arguing further along this post that all unexpected expenses are really expected costs with an attached element of uncertainty. This is a powerful claim which I believe to be true. Hopefully by the end of this post you will agree. Not all unexpected expenses were created equal. I like to think of a hierarchy of unexpected expenses and in the following I will present my hierarchy of costs and how I budget and plan for these.#1 ?Is it Christmas already?? ? Seasonal recurring expensesWhen it comes to the first type of unexpected expenses, such as holiday presents for example, the case is clear. These are obviously expected costs which were not planned for. Th...

The Problem of Accounting and Budgeting For Cash Expenses
2008-05-08 15:15:00
Where did all that cash go ?I?ve recently written two posts on payment methods or credit cards vs. cash. I argued that while cash payments help us avoid overspending credit card payments provide us with valuable and timely information for budget planning and review (Credit Cards or Cash: A Costly Tradeoff).I also provided my tips and insights on how we can make credit card payments more tangible and real to help save us money (How to Save by Making Credit Card Payments More Real and Tangible: 5 Practical Tips). There is, however, one remaining question which I?ve yet to find a successful solution to. How do we account, and budget in turn, for routine cash expenses? We can?t avoid paying cash as part of our daily routines. The problem arises at the end of the month when I take a look at all my cash withdrawals and start scratching my head trying to remember where I spent all that money. Debt Consolidation - Why Is Budgeting Important?
2008-05-06 16:29:00
When you are deep in debt, the solution is not only to get out of that debt (often by means of consolidating), but also to learn what it is necessary for you never to fall back on debt again. Not everyone understands the importance of budgeting when it comes to debt consolidation or negotiation. What is the point of repaying what you owe and becoming debt-free if you do not change your faulty ways?
Credit Cards or Cash: A Costly Tradeoff
2008-04-29 21:58:00
Where do you stand in the tradeoff between cash and credit cards? There?s an ongoing debate on the preferred and recommended method of payment for routine, everyday expenses and purchases. Is paying cash better, and more financially sound, than paying with credit cards? Maybe it should be the other way around with credit cards being a more convenient method of payment? The trade off between cash and credit cards ? It doesn?t end with convenienceMany people recommend handling a monthly expense budget on a cash-basis. This recommendation is sound as it essentially contains two important principles:1. Increasing the tangibility of money ? Cash spending is the most tangible form of spending. When we pay cash we see the money literally leaving our wallet and hand and watch it slowly moving away from us and into the seller?s register making harder to spend.2. Following budget constraints ? Cash just runs out. Credit doesn?t. When the cash we allowed for this month is over it?s over (forcing...

How to Break the Vicious Circle of Negative Cash Flow and Growing Debt
2008-04-28 16:48:00
Understanding the vicious circle is the first step out of itChronic overdraft and debt is a widely spread illness. Chances are many of the household who suffer from it are caught in a vicious circle of negative cash flow and debt. Even more likely is the fact that they are unaware of their situation and of the behavioral pattern responsible for it.The vicious circle A vicious circle is comprised of an interlinked series of events or behaviors which constantly reinforce themselves through feedback towards greater instability. In household finances the classic vicious circle would like this:The total negative cash flow of the household keeps getting bigger and bigger. How to Save Money by Analyzing Your Budget: 4 Basic Tools
2008-04-18 22:28:00
Can?t see the forest for the trees? Budgeting is an essential part of managing our personal finances. The story doesn?t end there though. We can and should learn to leverage our budget and the historical and future data it holds. By analyzing this data we can spot trends, problems and opportunities and increase our financial efficiency.Basic budgeting will help you keep a positive or zero cash flow, as opposed to a negative cash flow which leads to never ending debt. The next step would be analyzing a budget using basic statistical and analytical tools and trying to identify which expenditures are problematic, abnormal and hold the greatest potential for increasing savings.#1 ?I spend how much on eating out!?? or AverageThe most basic tool in budgeting is arithmetical average. Since our lives are cyclical and routine by nature using average costs will work 80% of the time. Averages can be put to good use in one of two ways:a. Analyzing average historical expenditures ? Where Should Your Next Spare Dollar Go?
2008-04-03 23:06:00
My wife and I have finally been able to save some money. After buying a home, remodeling it and getting married all in one year our financial resources have been greatly depleted. A couple of months with relatively smaller expenses passed and we?ve been able to save a small yet significant amount of money.Suddenly we?re faced with a question: Where should we put this money? What should we do with our next saved dollar?I believe the answer lies in the truths of basic financial planning theory. In my opinion when we consider where our next dollar should go we have to examine the following hierarchy of financial ?needs? (assuming your debt repayments are within your monthly budget):Repaying expansive debtNot all debts are bad debts, just the more expansive ones are. For example, just yesterday I wrote about the advantages a mortgage has in making us more disciplined savers (with relatively cheap interest rates). If your outstanding loans are pricey you should definitely work towards rep...
Budgeting for a Future Purchase
2008-04-01 19:29:00
Whether you want to go on vacation, get that big screen TV, buy a boat or a new car, or anything other high dollar item, you will need to begin budgeting for that future purchase. In this edition of Personal Finance Resources, I want to give you some simple tips that you can implement to help you budget for a future purchase. Anybody that has a little bit of income can put aside enough money to buy most any one item they want, but the key is being disciplined and diligent to get there. And bottom line, you will have to WAIT. No…I said a dirty word…wait. The problem we face in America is our lack of patience, we have to have everything right now; there is no discipline or patience. This leads to debt, and more debt, and ultimately for many, bankruptcy. But let’s get into some of the simple ways of budgeting for a future purchase: Making small sacrifices to put back a little extra. This is very hard to do. Not buying the coke at the vending machine, eating lunch a...

Complex Budgeting
2008-03-15 12:26:00
Living as an expat has certainly added to the complexity of my budgeting exercises. There are many financial perks to living in a dangerous post such as Afghanistan, but there are also a number of fluctuations that I continually have to manage. This includes:No danger pay whenever I'm out of Afghanistan, including while working in Southeast Asia;Per diem that is post tax while on business;Advances and reimbursements for business expenses;Fluctuating R&R expenses; No danger pay or post differential when I'm in the states;Fluctuation of taxes as allowances ebb and flow. This means that I have to be careful with automated finances, as the incoming pay will fluctuate often as my travel bumps up in the near future. To make sure that I was keeping this delicate balance I recently spent some time updating my budget. James' budget is relatively fixed, so I'm just concentrating on mine for the moment. Here are the figures that show the variations that should be expected. Note that the ...

Credit crunch and Uk: They are into budgeting
2008-02-21 06:52:00
Recently I came across an interesting news about Mortgages in earth.co.uk. The story was about a survey conducted in Britain and the title is "Budgeting is 'top priority' for Brits". The report carried out by the Friends Provident has revealed that as the United Kingdom(UK) is feeling the effects of the worldwide credit crunch, 41per cent of respondents of the survey plan to "economise", one third of people are planning a "complete overhaul" of their finance and budget in order to find better deals. Mr. James Ward, the director of Friends provident commented that although the forty percent of people are worried about the financial situation and credit crunch, the "trick is to harness this heightened awareness and to do something positive". He also advised the customers to invest the money ?in a way makes it work smarter for their needs?.He is actually right, with the fall of stock markets in India, Japan, and other Asian countries, with less credit available in hand, its time to i...
