Monuments of Buenos Aires: Spaniard's Monument
2008-05-04 19:57:00 This is in my opinion one of the most beautiful monuments in Buenos Aires, not only for its magnificence, but also for its location, in the intersection of two wide boulevards: Avenue del Libertador and Avenue Sarmiento in Palermo. Its real name is "Magna Carta and the Four Argentine Regions", but everybody knows it as "El monumento de los Españoles" (The Monument to the Spaniards). It was donated in 1910 by the Spanish community for the centenary of the May Revolution. But the construction suffered several problems. The first sculptor and winner of the design contest, Agustin Querol, died in 1909, and his creation had to be continued by another artist, Cipriano Folgueras, who also died shortly after. The work was even more delayed when the Spanish ship which brought the bronze pieces sunk on March, 1916 in the Brazilian coast, and replicas had to be ordered to Spain, which were finished in 1918. The monument was finally inaugurated on May 25, 1927.The monument is made on a 24.5 mete...

Buenos Aires through a german's eyes
2008-04-24 20:12:00 What is so appealing about Buenos Aires that millions of people choose it out of the rest of the world as a destination when it comes to enjoying themselves, resting and discovering a place where they will be greeted with wide arms open.According to the survey carried out by the National Secretariat of Tourism of Argentina (SECTUR), virtually nine out of ten tourists who visited Buenos Aries found ?what they were expecting and even more? and considered that quality service improved or remained as good as in previous visits. The report, which covered virtually 800 cases, showed that more than 90% of the respondents said it is likely they come back to the country as a tourist. As we thought it would be ?unethical?, in a matter of speaking, for an Argentinean to promote its own country, we will let a German friend of ours speak for ourselves. We met him in San Martin de los Andes one of the most wonderful places of Patagonia.Marco has traveled to Argentina since 1994. The first places ...

The Age of Nonpolarity
2008-04-16 14:40:00 The principal characteristic of twenty-first-century international relations is turning out to be nonpolarity: a world dominated not by one or two or even several states but rather by dozens of actors possessing and exercising various kinds of power. This represents a tectonic shift from the past. The twentieth century started out distinctly multipolar. But after almost ...

Buenos Aires Loved The Olympic Torch
2008-04-12 02:05:00 The first time the Olympics torch graced the lands of Argentina was a blast! In a good sense that is. No untoward incident was recorded in the Tango City. While people were "mobbing" to catch a glimpse of the Olympic flame, most were delighted to be a catch this once in a lifetime event for Argentinians. This visit of the Olymic flame was the one and only for the Latin American continent which is actually the 7th leg of the trip around the world. Next stop is the city of Dar Es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania.Watch the start of the Olympic torch relay in Argentina

La Isla (The Island), one of the best kept secrets in Buenos Aires
2008-04-03 20:25:00 La Isla (The Island), enclosed between Gelli y Obes, Copérnico, and Galileo streets in Recoleta, is dominated by sophisticated and high class buildings and embassies. Due to its particular layout, with stairs and slopes, this spot is almost free of traffic and noise. All these features make this one of the most exclusive and upscale areas in Buenos Aires. The area, up and behind the slope where the monument to Bartolome Mitre is located, occupies only 5 square blocks, and is little known even by locals, even though it is located in one of the most visited neighborhoods in the city, surrounded by the National Library, Plaza Francia, Plaza Mitre, Buenos Aires Design Center, and Las Heras Avenue. This peaceful retreat was once a country estate owned by the Hale Pearson family, with an English style park. Around 1910 the estate was sold and divided into different plots of land, and the final design was performed by architect Bouvard, director of Parks in Paris. From the original estate ...

Protests in Buenos Aires, 3-26-08
2008-03-28 00:25:00 For the past 2 weeks, people have staged massive protests throughout the country´s rural areas. Citizens have acted in response to newly elected president Christina Kirschner's economic decision to raise the export tax on Argentinian meat and grains. Christina would like to keep commodity prices affordable for Argentinians. In order to do this she has chosen to raise the taxes for those farmers and ranchers who choose to export their commodities. By doing this, she has made it impossible for Argentina´s farmers and ranchers to make a viable living by doing what they do. At this moment there is a huge movement to end the nationalization of these sorts of these industries. Over the last 2 weeks, farmers and ranchers have held massive protests through out the country. They have effectivly set up road blockades in order to stop trucks that are bringing goods into Buenos Aires. Their production has nearly slowed to a stand-still. Producers are dumping their meat and grains out in a re...

Things that I have learned from Porteños: Tip #1
2008-03-16 01:24:00 If you are getting towards the end of a night of partying and have an opened glass bottle of beer that you would like to save for for the next day (or the day after, or the day after that), all you have to do is put a spoon inside of it upside down and store the beer in the refregerator. Yes, sounds strange, sounds insane, but it works. I don´t know how but it works. Is there any chemists or physicists who are reading this? I think that these sorts of dignified people might have a better idea why such a thing would work. Here is a step-by-step visual explaination in case you don´t know how to read:STEP 1) Drink beer freely and hopefully happily. Stop drinking when you do not want any more beer. If your beer is empty, stop reading this article, it is irrelevent for you. If you there is beer left in your bottle, continue on to step 2.STEP 2) Find a small spoon. These can usually be found in your kitchen drawer. Any spoon will work as long as its handle fits through the mouth of your be...

Say bye-bye to this Buenos Aires / Diganle adiós a éste Buenos Aires / Diga
2008-03-14 02:15:00 Probably most of the old constructions of Buenos Aires will be gone in a few years. We always say that if there is a construction boom, the economy is improving, or at least it should, due to all the industries involved. It is true that many of these houses being demolished were already in ruins due to neglecting owners. But it is also certain that important sums of money are tempting many owners. Investment and economical growth is positive but at what extent can we demolish part of our architectural past? What about those buildings with architectural value? Isn?t there any official policy for assisting the maintenance of those buildings or protecting them? What do you think of these changes we are witnessing in Palermo Viejo? Will the neighborhood loose its particular character?

Monuments of Buenos Aires: Bartolome Mitre
