2008-03-15 06:44:00 Cars can catch fire even when parked and idle, automaker warnsDon't park them in your garage!General Motors Corp. is recalling more than 207,000 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix sedans and urgently warning owners not to park them in garages or other structures because they can catch fire.The fire-prone vehicles are the 1997-2003 Buick Regal GS and Grand Prix GDP models with 3.8-liter supercharged V-6 engines.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported on its Web site that, “Fires may be caused by drops of engine oil being deposited on the exhaust manifold through hard braking.â€A fire can start if the oil gets hot enough, NHTSA warned. 2008-03-14 20:54:00 Buick, Pontiac recalls 207,542 vehicles The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recalling involving 207,542 Buick and Pontiac vehicles. The recall — which impacts 1997-2003 model year Buick Regal GS and Pontiac Grand Prix GTP vehicles equipped with a 3.8 L supercharged engine — is due to the possibility of an engine fire. Under hard braking, oil can leak onto the cars' exhaust manifolds. If the oil gets beneath the manifold's heat shield, it could spark a fire that can spread through the entire engine compartment. The NHTSA failed to mention how many complaints it had received, but did say most cases happened five to ten minutes after the vehicle had been turned off. The NHSTA says owners should avoid parking their cars in parking structures as the fire could spread to these buildings. The defect doesn't appear to have caused any injuries.

2008-01-27 23:36:00 Shanghai GM, the Chinese arm of the (still) biggest automaker in the world, has announced its “Drive to Green†strategy in order to have a cleaner way of producing cars, as well as cars that pollute even less than the current ones. To prove wrong the ones that may think this is just a statement and nothing else, the company has also presented the first product from the strategy, the Buick LaCrosse Eco-Hybrid.Capable of running 12 km/l of petrol, instead of the 10.2 km/l the regular version is able to achieve, the LaCrosse Eco-Hybrid is, according to Shanghai GM, the “first mainstream hybrid model in China’s upper-medium vehicle segment with volume productionâ€. It offers almost an increase of 20% in fuel economy, but still nothing to be impressed with, especially considering the additional cost a hybrid vehicle offers.
