Junior Reid and Buju Banton square off at Best of the Best 2008
2008-05-28 19:16:00 Shows like Best of the Best are part of the reason why I wished I lived in Florida sometimes. Unfortunately, I didn’t attend the show that went down this past Sunday, in Broward, Florida but here’s a good review of the action that occured. Hailed as the North American version of Jamaica’s Sumfest, Best of the Best brings out the finest performers in reggae such as Super Cat, Beenie Man, Assassin, and Sizzla. Junior Reid performed in lieu of Mavado who wasn’t able to get his immigration paperwork in order in time to attend the event (ditto this situation for Bounty Killer as well) , and rumor has that Reidhad some choice and downright offensive words for Buju Banton backstage, referring to him as a “battyman” and refusing to shake his hand. I’m not sure what the history is behind the incident and neither artist has issued an official statement regarding the incident, but it is reported that Buju was the bigger man and simply walked away from ...

I-Tunes bans Buju Banton, T.O.K. & Elephant Man
2008-04-10 05:19:00 Things are really, really heating up for Jamaican artists, and the country as a whole when it comes to homophobia. Gay rights activists are on the warpath and are taking no prisoners against reggae artists who have homophobic lyrics (past and present) and those who support them. Earlier this week, I reported that Red Stripe was pulling all sponsorship from music events (which some believed to be a move based on protests from gay rights activists), well the latest casualties in this all out war are Buju Banton, TOK and Elephant Man, their respective songs Boom Bye Bye, Chi Chi Man, and Log On have all been pulled from I-Tunes after Canadian gay rights groups SMM and Egale sent letters requesting that the music be removed. I-Tunes took the request a step further and removed ALL albums that the songs were featured on, including compilations. In related news it’s been reported that Bounty Killer has had several European concerts canceled due to protests by gay rights group to the...

iTunes.ca pulls Buju Banton, Elephant Man and TOK songs for being Homophob
2008-04-08 13:53:00 iTunes Canada has removed several songs it claimed to be laced with anti-gay lyrics from its online store, in response to a campaign led by Egale and Stop Murder Music. The songs ? by Jamaican dancehall artists Buju Banton, Elephant Man and TOK ? contain lyrics that advocate the killing of gays. "iTunes is exercising its corporate responsibility by pulling this murder music and raising the bar for other retailers and distributors to do the same," says Akim Larcher, founder of SMM. He calls iTune's decision a victory for the gay community in Canada and in the Caribbean iTunes has also gone a step further by removing entire albums that contain the offending songs, not just the songs themselves. Elephant Man's track Log On contains the lyrics "Dance wi a dance and a bun out a freaky man" (Join our dance and let's burn out the queer man). The album of the same name can't be downloaded on iTunes, but all of Elephant Man's other albums are available. "We are extremely pleased wi...

Buju Banton Headlines Guyana's 'Biggest' Reggae Show
2007-10-14 21:26:00 It is being promoted as the biggest reggae show ever to hit Guyana, a claim that could be disputed if it weren't for the fact that the persons bragging are the ones who gave us the huge, hyped and unforgettable Beres Hammond/Maxi Priest concert two years ago. A Beres/Maxi headliner is a large pair of shoes to fill but according to the people behind the Guyana Music Festival, which is billed for the National Stadium on October 27, GT Entertainment, the likes of Buju Banton; Third World; Collie Buddz, Mr. Easy; Kiprich and Alaine- all Jamaican stars, are big enough to fill those shoes. Perhaps in the cases of Third World and Buju the statement is true. The other artistes in the line-up are likely to make the kind of splash we expect them to. Collie Buddz is the hottest thing besides Alaine among the other performers including locals, Fojo, Jory and Brutal Jammers. At the launch of the show earlier this week, Kashif Mohammed, one of the directors of GT Entertainment told the medi...

Buju Banton - Til Shiloh
2006-12-22 22:55:02 It was not pure ego that led Buju Banton to title his 1993 album ‘Voice Of Jamaica’; his unique voice is a gruff, melodic instrument, and his lyrics are precise. He built his career on controversial hits and slacker anthems, but has since helped spearhead a movement to swing reggae’s pendulum away from sex and [...] |
