Lighthouse Effect with Small Fluorescent Bulbs and Neon Indicator Switches

Forcing Bulbs Indoors
2008-09-24 10:00:00 Have you ever smelled paperwhites? I'm talking about the tiny little white daffodils that are also called paperwhite narcissus. They have such a lovely clean white scent that if you've smelled them once that's probably all I'd need to mention to get you to plant them. They're a bulb that's easy to "force" (or force to bloom) indoors and they're a winter bulb which is why I'm mentioning it now.If you buy a bag at the store (they should be popping up in stores about now) you can be guaranteed pretty little flowers in time for Christmas by following a few easy steps.1. Prepare ahead of time. The bulbs take approximately 8 weeks to bloom, give or take, so if you want a beautiful Christmas arrangement you need to be buying bulbs next month.2. Buy the bulbs--paperwhite narcissus or amaryllis are the easiest for the holidays. Those are my favorites for winter and the amaryllis can be very dramatic in pink, red, white or striped. I grew some last year you can see here.3. Plant...

Planting Fall Bulbs
2008-09-10 10:00:00 When it comes to planting fall bulbs not only do you get the benefits of gardening you get a mini life-lesson for free because if you prepare well, lay a good foundation and take some time to plan ahead you'll get the rewards down the line.Just when think you can't take any more winter and you're emerging from cold and darkness, up will pop these pretty little flowers and suddenly life is okay once again.I know very little about gardening in warm climates but if you live where the ground freezes I can guide you through the simple steps to guarantee some rewards for your labors.1. Start thinking now. Right now. In Anchorage if you want flowers in the spring you'll need to plant bulbs in the fall by the last week of September at the absolute latest. This is probably a little earlier than for places like Utah, Montana or Minnesota but it never hurts to plan ahead.2. Decide what you want to plant. This will of course be limited by your climate but even here in zone 2 we can get...

Broken Compact Bulbs Harmful
2008-05-31 15:27:00 The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) has joined with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in educating the public about the benefits and proper handling of Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, or CFLs, to protect people and the environment.CFLs have become a popular way to provide light, while reducing energy consumption. However, it is important that people are aware that CFLs contain small amounts of mercury and must be handled and disposed of properly to avoid an unnecessary mercury release."The proper disposal and clean-up of broken compact fluorescent light bulbs is important due to the mercury vapor that can be released by a broken bulb," stated DPH Commissioner J. Robert Galvin, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A. "While the amount of mercury released by a broken bulb is verysmall and may not affect most people, even small exposures can affect the developing brain and central nervous system in fetuses and young children. Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
2008-04-20 21:10:00 I've finally decided to jump on board and try Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) in my new home. Today I bought three GE Energy Smart 20 watt CFL's. The 20 watt CFL is equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent light bulb. These new bulbs are supposed to last 6 years or 10,000 hours of operation. An incandescent light bulb typically only lasts about 750 hours. That means you'd need 14 incandescent bulbs to each fluorescent bulb. The cost of the bulb is payed for just comparing bulbs not even considering the energy savings.Obviously using these bulbs is a great way to start living "green". Some may argue that the Mercury contained in them poses a significant environmental issue, however, with proper education people will realize that they need to be disposed of properly. These bulbs are also energy star certified.I put three of these in an overhead light fixture in our breakfast nook and I was quite impressed. The color of the light has improved drastically and the bulbs come on almo...

Time to get some new Bulbs again :(
2008-04-06 00:00:00 The boys were playing indoor football again... And it was bound to happen, he says looking at them mowing the back yard for me... Every bulb I use in this house came from one of the best online stores I've seen, not only for usability, but for the sheer numbers and types of GLS and CFL's they stock in their e-shop. I've just used my last spare bulb and on visiting the site, I see they stock a lot more items than when I last visited. I spent ages looking for a new bulb for the oven a few weeks back and in the end gave up. None of the stores round here stocked one, and the guy in B&Q even tried to convince me that they "don't make em' like that anymore, can I interest you in a new oven sir..." Having just logged into the ebulb shop, they jumped out at me, and low and behold, my lamp is the second one down on the list. Looks like I'll be ordering a couple of them as well. ebulb is just that... it's not just CFL's, I reckon if you get light from it, they'l...

Beautiful Spring Bulbs
2008-03-31 05:08:00 Instead of growing our daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs formally"in beds and borders"we naturalize them. This reduces care to almost nothing. What a pleasure just to plant, knowing that with most of the bulbs no further work is needed! For the greatest effectiveness we grow these naturalized bulbs in broad sweeps. You don't need a great deal of land to do this. A drift of a few dozen in a small area will be comparable, in its own way, to a great mass of bulbs. The method is important: Plant bulbs fairly close together and not in symmetrical rows, but informally, casually. One way to do this is to scatter bulbs on the ground and plant each one where it falls. Of course you will always want to have three or five bulbs of a certain variety in front of an old stump or lichened boulder for a specific effect, but in general you should think in terms of large numbers. All of the familiar spring bulbs will bloom in semishade, especially under the high, late-developing shad...
