First Bulgarian Design Biennial
2008-10-16 21:08:00
Finally it is a fact - the first Bulgarian Design Biennialwas open last week with a large exhibition of projects from all fields of design and will continue until October 29th. A three-day conference followed with a Night of Design packed with young design-lovers.(right - something I liked: a speaker by ?Everything-but-the-box?) A project from each field was awarded, but the design I liked most did not get any award. Still I consider it a very good example of the talent of contemporary Bulgarian designers. It is the HUG armchair by Ilian Milinov. I would like to have one, What do you think? Properties in Bulgarian Resorts - UK investors snap up
2008-03-05 09:10:00
The Times in London writes that Bulgaria is now one of the top destinations for ski properties due to factors such as the low property prices and inexpensive ski passes. “During the summer this sparsely populated, largely rural country offers a wealth of activities such as hiking, fishing and mountain biking, as well as the fabulous beaches of the Black Sea coast. The numerous historic towns, unspoilt villages, castles and churches are also waiting to be explored.” Properties in ski areas can earn up to 12% rental return according to property investment firm Assetz. This return is potentially double that of coastal properties due to their all year-round attraction. The number of UK holidaymakers visiting Bulgaria" rel="tag">Bulgaria increased by a staggering 36% in the past year. This has lead to an influx of travel companies as the country is now establishing itself as a true holiday hotspot. Source: http://panload.com ShareThis
Opportunities for Bulgarian property investment 'still exist'
2008-02-28 01:00:00
It may have been an international property hotspot for some time but opportunities still exist for savvy investors in the Bulgarian market.According to industry experts a number of high-end projects are being planned in the country, which is expected to attract a new wave of investment. These will be situated in previously underdeveloped areas close to coastal towns, and will be much more sophisticated than many of the cheaper properties that have appealed to investors in the past."There is a swing now from budget properties to those in better locations, of good build and good management," Brian Conneely of West Properties International told the Financial Times. And Veneta Krasteva, the organiser of Sofia's annual Balkan Real Estate Conference, believes long-term growth is likely to be underpinned by these new developments in places that have so far experienced only low levels of tourism.Bulgaria joined the European Union on January 1st 2007 and since its accession it has attracted l...

Bulgarian pop diva keeps flame burning for Castro
2008-02-02 12:31:00
By Anna Mudeva SOFIA (Reuters) - Yordanka Hristova was once called "the bride of all Cubans" and was so popular on Fidel Castro's island that Cuban families named their daughters after her. Forty years on, the 64-year-old Bulgarian pop diva keeps the gossips guessing about her relationship with the revolutionary icon himself, saying all that matters is her love for Cuba and her admiration for its leader with the beautiful brown eyes. The singer was first introduced to Castro during his visit to communist-ruled Bulgaria in 1972 and fell for what she called his macho charisma. He praised her for her good Spanish rather than her looks, she recalled. "I was impressed with his eyes, which looked very beautiful, brown, slightly transparent," she told Reuters. Dismayed by the collapse of ties between Havana and Sofia after the end of communist rule in eastern Europe in 1989, Hristova has helped set up a foundation to revive cultural links, named after Cuba's n...

Mad About Bulgarian Yogurt
2007-11-29 02:04:00
And not the “Mad About You” type of “Mad About.” This story by Bulgarian news source news.bg is a bit choppy on the English.  What I’ve gathered is that Japanese and Korean businessmen are nervous about Bulgarian yogurt entering their respective markets.  Bulgarian yogurt from Meiji Dairies Corp. has taken the largest share of the Japanese market at 39%. Ready for the classic line? “Korean businessmen Kang Choy and Cho Choy expressed their concern Bulgarian Yogurt will become #1 in Korea.” Yeah, because God forbid that a foreign company succeed in the Korean market. -- ZKFJ

The Incredible Story of the Protection of the Bulgarian Jews-Mostly Truth!
2007-11-18 16:02:00
Summary of the eRumor: The eRumor says that all 50,000 Jews in Bulgaria, whose government sided with the Nazis during World War II, were saved from Nazi death camps. It tells how it happened and also says that one of the most famous immigrants from Bulgaria to Israel was a young graduate of the Bulgarian Military Academy who in Israel changed his name to Moshe Dayan. The Truth: The story about the salvation of Bulgaria's Jews is true but this particular version of the story has some factual problems. The information about the famous Israeli military leader Moshe Dayan is not correct. He was not from Bulgaria. He was born on a kibbutz in Israel and his parents were immigrants from Ukraine. Also, the book that is referenced in the story is titled Beyond Hitler's grasp: The Heroic Rescue of Bulgaria's Jews and was wr...
My Evening with the Bulgarian Ambassador
2007-11-17 04:34:00
I’ve recently become friends with fellow food writer Daniel Gray.  He invited me out to Zelen’s in Itaewon for their wine party on Friday night.  I was hesitant to go because I get off work at 8:30–which puts me in Itaewon at 9:30.  The last buses for home leave around 1:00, so I gotta keep my eye on the clock the whole time. I did end up going.  Zelen’s is a Belgian/French bistro in upper Itaewon, where all the new trendy restaurants are.  It’s owned by the same woman who owns the popular Suji’s.  Unfortunately, she wasn’t there that night, and I didn’t get to meet her. I came in right behind a group of young Korean women, who didn’t know a wine party was going on that night.  They felt intimidated at the door and left.  The guy at the door told me about the dress code–wear something silver. No one said anything about this before.  So I was obligated to buy some cheap silver-looking bracelet on top of the 29,000 w...
The Doc’s Diary: What’s wet, wet, wet in Bulgarian?
2007-11-16 02:40:00
No, I'm not suggesting that Stan is in any way limp-wristed. Far from it: during the last three outings he's got progressively better - and a lot of that has been driven by aggression and determination. But here's one for you: is Stan Petrov the sweatiest Villa player ever? It may not seem an important point, but it is one that we need to clear up.
