Cito?s Historical Use of the Bullpen in Inter-League Play
2009-06-22 17:39:00 Cito didn’t look to comfortable working a bullpen this past week, did he? All told the Jays went 4 - 2. Still, the Jays pen was so depleted towards the end that Richmond had to man up (kudos BTW) and pitch two days after throwing eight innings. And Romero had to throw 118 pitches ...

Bullpen Follies
2009-06-19 05:41:00 Something about playing the Cubs that brings out the worst in the White Sox bullpen, even in seasons where the team would go on to have at least a "winning" year. Here's a sample just from this decade!* June 11, 2000 Sox blow the lead in the 7th inning and lose the game 6-5.* June 9, 2001 Sox blow the lead in the 7th inning and lose 5-4 in ten.* June 22, 2003 Sox blow the lead in the 8th inning and lose 2-1.* May 21, 2006 Sox blow the lead in the 8th inning and lose 7-4.* June 20, 2008 Sox blow the lead in the 7th inning and lose 4-3.And of course in back to back games in the...
Blame The Bullpen
2009-06-18 23:23:00 Cubs-6 White Sox-5A monumental collapse after taking a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning. This is the 4th game this season where the bullpen blew a lead and lost the game in the 7th inning or later. (Conversely the Sox have won only two games this year trailing in the 7th inning or later - both against Kansas City.)I don't often disagree with Steve Stone who I think is one of the best color analyst in the game but yesterday I heard him say "the bullpen has been doing the job all year..."Really?Granted the ERA's of the big four (Bobby Jenks, Matt Thornton, Scott Linebrink and Octavio Dotel) are pretty good but in addition to the four blown...
Giants' Bullpen Thriving
2009-05-06 23:43:00 The season is officially a month old, and one unit that has been rock solid for the Giants, and hasn't gotten much pub, has been their bullpen. Brian Wilson is nailing things down in the ninth, and pretty much everyone who gets him the ball has done their job's so far.The two newest additions to the Giants bullpen, Jeremy Affeldt and Bob Howry, have both done what the Giants have asked of them early on in the season. Affeldt is carrying a 3.18 era on 11.1 innings this year and striking out a batter an inning. Howry is at 4.35, but has really only had one bad outing in his 12 appearances. Merkin Valdez also looks completely healthy and is throwing the ball the way the Giants were hoping he would after missing most of last season with elbow issues. Those three, along with Brian Wilson, are doing their job, which is kind of what was expected of them coming in. What wasn't really expected though was that Brandon Medders and Justin Miller, two minor league invites to spring training, ...
Send Purcey to the Bullpen
2009-04-28 23:51:00 After last nights performance its becoming abundantly clear that David Purcey doesn?t belong in the Jays rotation. At least currently. Rather than sending him down (as I called for last week) I think both parties (Jays + Purcey) would benefit from a demotion to mop-up duty in the bullpen. Why do I say this? Two ...

Bullpen Bulletins: War Machine #2
2009-01-27 20:00:00 Creative Team Writer: Greg Pak Artist: Leonardo Manco Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 Reading this was like watching a good summer action flick. Rhodey (War Machine) is cyborg who is set up to "take on monsters and madmen in international hotspots". He is assisted by team leader Bethany Cabe and Parnell Jacobs (his pit crew). Parnells' wife was kidnapped by Eaglestar International in another country. Rhodey charges in with blazing guns taking out missles and remote controlled tanks. He shows that he is a true hero when he sacrifices himself to protect the mercenaries who are attacking him. He rescues Parnells' wife. Parnell's wife makes one request. That Rhodey not kill any of the men who attacked her. She wants them to live to stand trial. Rhodey agrees and uses a weapon that blinds them for a short time. Norman Osborn is notified that Rhodey is winning. He dispatches Ares to...
Bullpen Bulletins: Nightwing #152
2009-01-20 15:00:00 Creative Team Writer: Peter Tomasi Pencils: Don Kramer Inks: Jay Leisten Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 Tomasi continues his excellent run on Nightwing. As part of the "Faces of Evil" feature, Ra's Al Ghul is the focus of this issue. In the wake of Batman's death, Ra's is trying to confirm his suspicions. Of course, Ra's is able to piece together that someone else killed Batman. He always dreamed of being the one who did it. Ra's builds the case that Dick is becoming the next Batman. Dick feels that Ra's is trying to cope with missing out on killing Batman by making Dick into his new arch enemy. Tomasi (aided by Kramer/Leisten) does a great job of establishing the new conflict between Dick and Ra's. I will miss this series when it ends. Highly recommended.

2008-08-26 00:54:00 Minnesota has acquired former Twins closer Eddie Guardado from the Texas Rangers to bolster the bullpen. The 37-year-old Guardado was 3-3 with a 3.65 ERA in 49 1-3 innings for Texas, which recently made him its closer after an injury to C.J. Wilson. Opponents are batting .220 against the left-hander this season. Read the full story. ...

2008-06-02 11:14:00 The Texas Rangers’ unexplainable daytime hex perseveres. Chris Sampson To The Bullpen
2008-05-28 15:30:00 In ten starts this season, Astros pitcher Chris Sampson is 3-3 with a 6.04 ERA and a 2.08 strikeout to walk ratio (25:12). "Not at this time," Mozeliak said when asked if the club might be tempted to check out the market for relievers. "We're very fortunate that we have a lot of depth in relief, not only here but at Triple-A [Memphis]. A lot of this can be addressed internally." Bullpen IMPLOSION...Baltimore 6 Boston 3
2008-05-15 11:25:00 This is getting old. FAST. For the third straight game, the Boston Red Sox staked themselves to a 3-0 lead, and for the third consecutive time, the Sox let the game slip away. To be more specific, the bullpen, in the form of Javie Lopez, Craig Hansen and Hideki Okajima, let the victory slip away. Lopez entered the game in the seventh inning and quickly recorded two outs. Freddie Bynum hit a grounder to Pedroia, but Pedey could not make the play. Runner on first with two outs...doesn't sound too bad, does it? Wait. Hansen was called in to relieve Lopez, and he allowed a single to the number 9 hitter, Quiroz, and a walk to Roberts to load the bases. Bye bye Hansen. Zero outs recorded...maybe you should consult Ah-nold again...soon! And then the Darkman was lit up like fireworks on the Fourth of July, a regular starburst cluster in the night sky. Okie gave up a monster grand slam slugged by Payton, and the game was effectively over. Okie has now allowed eleven out of fourteen inherit...

The Tampa Rays Bullpen And Other Fantasy Notes
2008-05-07 17:59:00 Rays' second-year pitcher Andy Sonnanstine handed a one-run lead to his bullpen and watched it preserve his 5th victory of the season. What a change! Last season, Sonnanstine would have seen the Devil Rays' bullpen blow his victory. Speaking of blown victories, Yankees' star middle reliever Joba Chamberlain was handed a 3-2 lead in the 8th inning and proceeded to relinquish the lead and Andy Pettitte's 4th Win and 205th career victory. Are there any Yankees' homers who will remember this when they clamor about how Joba can't be moved from middle relief because other possible replacements would blow 8th inning leads? In the same game, Indians' starting pitcher Fausto Carmona walk five batters, and now has issued 31 free passes in 39.2 innings of work. Does anyone believe he can continue with a stellar ERA (2.95) if that walk rate does not rapidly decelerate? White Sox' starter Gavin Floyd took a no-hitter into the 9th inning. He finished with a o...

Saito struggles from a lack of work out of LA bullpen
2008-04-29 14:05:00 The Takashi Saito who has already blown two saves isn't the same Takashi Saito who was an All-Star last year. Pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said he sees it every time Saito delivers a slider that misses the plate, and Saito himself said he feels it every time he steps on the mound. Even when Saito has managed to put up zeros, as was the case in the ninth inning of the Dodgers' extra-inning victory over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, the outs haven't come easily. A strained right calf limited him to six outings in spring training, and, because of the Dodgers' poor form to start the season, he's had only four save opportunities. He has posted a 2.61 earned-run average in nine outings, up from 1.40 last season.Saito didn't pitch once on the Dodgers' five-game trip to Atlanta and Cincinnati this month, and his six consecutive games without an appearance were the most in his major league career. Saito may be 38 and he may have played 14 professional seasons in Japan before coming...

Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti told the San Francisco Chronicle last Wednesday that the team would not skip one of Zito's starts or send the $126-million man to the bullpen. "No," Righetti said, "because who the hell is going to pitch? We're not that deep in starting pitching."Then Zito lost again, on Sunday, and this afternoon the Giants sent him to the bullpen."We can't keep doing what we are doing," Manager Bruce Bochy said earlier. "We have to get this guy right."The Giants have not had a 20-game loser since they moved from New York to San Francisco in 1958. The San Francisco record is 18, by Ray Sadecki in 1968.

Zito to bullpen
2008-04-29 03:43:00 BY ADAM RONIS There has been a lot of pessimism for Mets recently. Imagine if they had signed Barry Zito? Be thankful they didn't because the Giants have sent the $126-million pitcher to the bullpen after he allowed eight earned runs in three innings in a 10-1 loss to the Reds on Sunday. Pat Misch, who has never won a Cy Young award by the way, will take his spot in the rotation. Zito is 0-6 with a 7.53 ERA in six starts. He has allowed 41 hits in 27 2/3 innings, He has made 261 starts and his durability was one of his major strengths. He pitched in one game as a reliever last season. Now the 2002 AL Cy Young winner is just awful. The Giants won't need a fifth starter until May 10 and Noah Lowry could return by then. Zito was someone to avoid in drafts and hopefully you did.
