Bureaucracy

Say goodbye to virtual bureaucracy
2008-08-03 22:14:00
Bureaucracy defends the status quo long past the time when the quo has lost its status.Dr. Laurence J. PeterDebit or credit card in hand, you're set to make a quick purchase online only to be greeted by yet another form asking for your personal details. You spend 10 minutes filling out the form and since you're new to the site, the online store asks you to choose your own unique password for the next time you shop at the site. You're then passed on to a security page which wants to check you're the legitimate owner of the bank card. Your password is requested. If you haven't forgotten the password for the security check with your bank (you may have more than one credit card and the password isn't the same as your online banking password or your cash card pin), then you'll probably have forgotten your password to the online store the next time you shop there. Re-requesting all these user names and passwords slows us down from spending our own money or making a quick consultatio...
Zubaydah, Bush and the Bureaucracy of Torture
2008-04-17 07:15:00
by Michael Collins The devastating attack of 9/11 conferred unprecedented popularity on the Bush administration. This was more a reflection of the strong desire for national unity in the wake of a tragedy than an endorsement of Bush policies. After the attack, there was a frantic effort inside the administration to show a major success in their newly proclaimed war on terror. The administration knew what the public didn't: Far from being surprised by airplanes used as weapons, they'd had a series of warnings from intelligence sources that commercial airplanes were indeed the next weapon of choice by terrorists. Once that information became public, the Bush administration would need something more to boost its image. In addition to warnings on the use of airplanes, the administration received at least 28 advanced intelligence warnings prior to 9/11. Was there more damaging information and analysis in the files of the agencies and individuals involved? The &q...
The Fight Against Red Tape
2008-02-28 19:00:00
By Paul Rieckhoff @ 11:39 AM (EST) Time and time again, we’ve seen troops and veterans suffering at the hands of an inept government bureaucracy. Wounded troops have been forced to repay their enlistment bonuses. Amputees fell through the cracks at Walter Reed. And 400,000 veterans are still waiting months (and even years) for their disability ...

Bureaucracy in the small land
2008-02-18 08:22:00
Size worked against Israel. Huge United States provided its early pioneers with vast expanses of empty land to live free. By the time American bureaucracy has established control over the subjects, they grew used to freedom. Israel lacked that immense advantage of space. The early Israeli kibbutzniks were pioneers not inferior to American. The Israelis ...

PLDT myDSL bureaucracy sucks big time
2008-01-14 01:22:00
Yeah, you heard it right. I used to like PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone company) when it comes to basic telephone services. But with PLDT myDSL (their overly hyped DSL service), wow - it’s a shame if I even call it a service. If you’d like to verify my qualms about this business titan of ISPs ...

Americans Joining China's Bureaucracy. Yea, That's The Ticket
2007-12-16 11:22:00
The first time I read how American government food inspectors are going to be "embedded" in Chinese government food inspections, I honestly thought it was sarcasm. I cannot remember where I first saw it, but I thought I was reading an Onion-like story expressing how desperate the United States has become to solve its food safety problems. I have since learned this story was no joke, but I am hardly any closer to taking it seriously as a resolution. Now The Black China Hand is out with a post telling me why (I love it when someone else articulates what I am "feeling," but unable to say. His post is entitled, '3's Company" and it says none of this makes much sense because of the following: I don’t get this. I mean why would China, the country that loves its privacy and fiercely guards its domestic arena from foreign interaction allow another sovereign nation to inspect its food supply. Are they for real? Furthermore, I’m not sure that I think it is a good policy move for ...

The Bureaucracy, the March, and the War - American Disengagement
2007-10-29 12:13:00
by Tom Engelhardt As I was heading out into a dark, drippingly wet, appropriately dispiriting New York City day, on my way to the "Fall Out Against the War" march — one of 11 regional antiwar demonstrations held this Saturday — I was thinking: then and now, Vietnam and Iraq. Since the Bush administration had Vietnam on the brain while planning to take down Saddam Hussein's regime for the home team, it's hardly surprising that, from the moment its invasion was launched in March 2003, the Vietnam analogy has been on the American brain — and, even domestically, there's something to be said for it. As John Mueller, an expert on public opinion and American wars, pointed out back in November 2005, Americans turned against the Iraq War in a pattern recognizable from the Vietnam era (as well as the Korean one) — initial, broad post-invasion support that eroded irreversibly as American casualties rose. "The only thing remarkable about the current war in...
Fed Ex vs the Federal Bureaucracy (video)
2007-10-28 02:32:00
It is not very often that I use the term 'brilliant' to describe someone but I do consider Newt Gingrich brilliant. And it is not just what he ahs to say. Brilliance lies just as much in the ability to explain in terms others can understand as it does in original thought itself. Will that necessarilly translate into the ability to be a good president? Well, that's another question. ~RJH
The Bureaucracy
2007-10-09 20:56:00
Max Weber (1864-1920) termed this organisational form a "rational-legal system" - its structure and processes expressly designed to achieve certain goals. The bureaucracy is rationally designed for optimum functional performance and every part (dept's., levels, posts) contributes to the whole (unity of purpose). The bureaucracy is legal. Authority is exercised via rule and procedural systems & the offices people occupy. Organisational members and clients accept (conform to) its authority because the rules are defined and administered fairly. Rights & privileges protect individuals from organisational (officer) injustice - equity prevails regardless of "who you are". Rules include policies and standard procedures for implementing these. They are solutions to past problems demanding known responses (we avoid reinventing the wheel). Rules guide behaviour ensuring consistency at every level. Nine out of ten problems encountered are covered by regular procedures. This is a risk ...

The Chauffeurs Dilemma
2007-09-30 09:00:00
Article by Arlie Hochschild Let's consider our political moment through a story. Suppose a chauffeur drives a sleek limousine through the streets of New York, a millionaire in the backseat. Through the window, the millionaire spots a homeless woman and her two children huddling in the cold, sharing a loaf of bread. He orders the chauffeur to stop the car. The chauffeur opens the passenger door for the millionaire, who walks over to the mother and snatches the loaf. He slips back into the car and they drive on, leaving behind an even poorer family and a baffled crowd of sidewalk witnesses. For his part, the chauffeur feels real qualms about what his master has done, because unlike his employer, he has recently known hard times himself. But he drives on nonetheless. Let's call this the Chauffeur's Dilemma.Read the rest herehttp://www.motherjones.com/-commentary/columns/2005/06/the_-chauffeurs_dilemma.html (http://www.motherjones.com/com-mentary/columns/2005/06/the_cha-uffeurs_...
Bureaucracy

Whenever people complain about bureaucracy, it is usually to complain about the French inventing such a thing.  Well, if the French invented it, I think the Ghanaians perfected it.  I thought bureaucracy in Canada was bad, but it is a cakewalk compared to here.  At least in Canada, for everything you want to get done, ...

A photo shooting and lots of bureaucracy

Well, it took about 30 seconds, I paid 14.90€ and got 4 ugly
Cabinet Office launches strategy to cut bureaucracy for front-line workers
2007-06-25 19:10:00
A government strategy to cut red-tape for front-line workers so public services can work more efficiently has been launched by Cabinet Office ministers Hilary Armstrong and Pat McFadden. The plan sets out how the government is going to reduce bureaucracy by: Getting Whitehall departments to identify, for the first time, the bureaucracy burden on public services Identifying the top 10 irritants in each field, publishing them in late 2007 Reducing duplicate or unnecessary information requests by departments which tie up people on the front line Giving public sector workers a clear mechanism to challenge bureaucracy which doesn?t work. Front-line staff are urged to log on to the Cabinet Office better regulation portal to lodge their ideas for cutting bureaucracy in their day-to-day work. The way information is collected needs to be rationalised to reduce form-filling and administration time, the ministers said.
Bureaucracy as An Attendant For The Society
2007-06-15 09:50:00
Bureaucracy as An Attendant For The SocietyI would like to comment a little about of bureaucracy reformation in indonesia, starting from the history of indonesia which was born as a nation with young generation tryingto lifted the pride and prestige of the nation through young fellow oath called Sumpah Pemuda 1928 until the reborn of the united nation of Indonesia which doesn?t depart of its function as structure of bureaucracy of nation and could create social justice and prosperity for the society of the nation.Hence I also hope there will be a continuity between society and state in creating social justice and prosperity for this nation, as for my desire in order to the industrial world could become a good partner for the government and the government could give the best effort in order to create good relationship with the industrial world.I wish to review a little bit of a relation between Directorate General of Post & Telecommunication (DGPT) with the industrial world or th...
Baha?i Administrative Bureaucracy
2007-04-29 17:10:00
It is fun to look at the Baha’i administration through the prism lens of organizational studies. It is rather difficult for a Baha’i to have such knowledge and not indulge. So allow me the indulgence. Recently Steve featured an article which tried to depict the Baha’i administration as inhabiting the ’sweet spot’ inside a theoretical framework ...

Bureaucracy Gone Mad
2007-03-23 18:24:00
I know that the Labour party has well and truly fucked up this country and I know that breaking apart government run businesses was a bad move but I never realised that simple tasks could be so damn complicated to correct. My annual season ticket (which costs me £2,500 a year), started to jam in various gates at stations. As this is my main ticket and it cost so much I decided to get a replacement.I went to City Thameslink today and asked for a new ticket.I thought this would be a simple process of man takes ticket, man checks my ID, man puts blank ticket in machine, man gives me shiny new ticket. Boy was I wrong!First off the ticket man said my ticket was playing up because the gates at City Thameslink were playing up.I stipulated I have never been through this station and that this was happening in various stations. He then said I couldn't exchange my ticket as I'd have to do that at the station where I got my ticket.I informed him that was online. He didn't know what to sugges...

Branding or Bureaucracy
2006-12-01 04:38:05
I saw this BMW advertisement today. At the right bottom, it was written “BMW,  voted the favorite car in France.” In the advertisement, a French “Road Authority officer”, had given fines to all those overtime cars behind BMW. However, the officer was trying to pay for the overtime BMW. A quite nice ads in illustrating that French likes BMW.   After watching BMW ads, it reminded me about  this YouTube video by Malaysian, that I had watched a few months ago. Having similar theme with the BMW ads,  the only difference was that, the latter wasn’t just an ads, but a reality in Malaysia. ( For RSS readers, the video link is here. )   Trying to differentiate them by Branding and Bureaucracy, for  the former ads and the latter video, they were all alike. I looked from BMW to Malaysian’s, and from Malaysian’s to BMW...
Tip: Creative Amidst Bureaucracy
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Contrary to popular belief, creativity can exist in bureaucratic environments. You can see it in the form of brainstorms and "exciting days" in offices across the corporate world. A new idea flourishes, but then it enters a bureaucratic mess that substantially reduces the likelihood of execution.
