When burgers attack
2009-08-27 22:34:00
Hold tight to your condiments. We are officially in the grips of burger mania. The latest addition to Chicago's ever-expanding menu of burger options is creeping into the Purgatory Pizza space in Wrigleyville as we speak. Though the sign still says Purgatory, it also will read "Park Ave." as of tomorrow. Just don't come looking for pizza anymore. Owner Chris Peckat already has turned off the ovens. A new, still-evolving menu will feature 10 burgers plus a burger of the week and a burger of the month, all named for Chicago Parks (Grant, Lincoln, etc.). There's no build-your-own option (Peckat and co. are taking care of the brainstorming for you with creations like a foie gras- and peach-topped burger) but you can go as big...
How to pair wine and burgers
2009-08-26 03:34:00
By Alpana SinghBesides apple pie, what could be more American than hamburgers? This staple of backyard barbecues and drive-thru windows continues to be more popular than ever, especially with top chefs around the country who are revamping this once humble sandwich by using luxurious ingredients such as prime beef, artisan bacon, hand-crafted cheeses and specialty sauces. Since our hamburgers have gone upscale, why shouldn't the beverage we drink with it? There is a wide range of craft beers and small-production sodas that fit the bill, but I also would throw wine into the mix. After all, red wine and red meat go together like a hand and glove. Adding two pieces of bread, cheese and condiments to the combo only...

We had a coupon for a free burger and dessert for my husband's birthday, so this burger and dessert was free. This is not a place I'd go to often, and the reason is the calories and fat. I mean, one burger over 1600 calories?? No way I'm eating this whole burger. That's almost the calories I have to eat in one day! The pie was really heavy and rich, and it has 350 calories, and the Kilauea burger has 1,650 calories! We shared, of course. I think I had 1/4 of burger, he had half on the day we got it, and he had the left overs the next day. Battle of the burgers

I know several people who would probably disagree (make that a lot) but if I were asked to choose between Jollibee or McDonalds, I would have to say McDonalds. Although it is not my first choice, it will do since it is admittedly one of the most accessible fast food joints in the metro. Read more… [ This is a content summary only. Burgers Don?t Make You Cry
2008-06-08 10:42:00
I almost cried when they forgot my burger The girl was mean and snippy Which didn’t help but that isn’t why I almost cried It was the one man who kindly asked “How are you doing?” It made me think of how I was doing- Not good would have been the correct answer Instead, I forced an ?appreciate your asking’ smile and turned away Let them think I almost cried over a stupid-ass burger Better that than share my pain Strangers don’t like that Makes them uncomfortable Don’t want to peek into the windows of your life Lest they see something that makes them reach out and connect Lest they turn their attention to an intersection not named ME I ate my burger moved to a different table letting them all think burgers can make people cry Leaving them with a story they could take home with them when they needed some small talk.
Brie & Chutney Turkey Burgers
2008-05-28 02:39:00
One of the great things I see in the food blogging community is that there are so many wonderful places you can take your blog. For many it's more than just a hobby, and they've gained so much exposure and success that they can do wonderful things through their blog. One such blogger is Blake Killian of BlakeMakes. When visiting his blog, you never know what you'll find - a delicious meal prepared by Blake or his wife, perhaps a guest blogger sharing a delicious creation, or even a contest to receive a free, fun, new food product. Free food? Through a blog? That's right. When I read about Blake's giveaway for McQuade's Celtic Chutney, a sweet and spicy ginger and fig concoction, I jumped right in on the contest by submitting my ideas for dishes I dreamed of making with the chutney. Luckily, Blake liked them and I was chosen as a chutney recipient!Looking at the many flavors of chutney available through McQuade's website, I found that many of the varieties combine fruit and sp...

Then eat them. My ma used to swear by that recipe. As in, literally - she'd stand by the mixing bowl going "fuckin' ravenous

What to Cook This Weekend: Salmon Burgers
2008-04-11 21:04:00
It's Spring and that means fresh salmon is starting to show up in grocery stores. You won't be able to find any wild chinook (king) salmon, but you can still get PCB-fortified farm-raised salmon and wild Alaska salmon. No matter what kind of salmon you get, you should definitely make salmon burgers this weekend. This recipe is courtesy of Emeril Lagasse. Ingredients:2 1/4 pounds salmon fillet, skinned, pin bones removed 1/2 cups panko (Japanese bread crumbs) or other dried bread crumbs 1/2 cup minced scallions 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon sambal oelek chili paste 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup plus 1 1/2 teaspoons soy sauce 1/4 cup sugar 3/4 cup mayonnaise 3 cups shaved purple cabbage 3 cups shaved green cabbage 1/2 cup shaved red onion 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons vegetable or peanut oil 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1 ...

Stuffed Turkey Burgers
2008-03-26 15:46:00
This recipe is very tasty and very easy to make on a busy weeknight. This recipe is from Ellie Krieger. She has a show on Food Network. She has great, healthy recipes that do not use far out ingredients. She actually uses lots of fresh fruits and veggies, which I love.I try to watch her show whenever I can (which is close to never!LOL).Ground turkey is a staple in my freezer and I am always looking for great recipes to use it with.I really do not use ground beef at all, unless I make spaghetti sauce or salisbury steaks for my husband. It just makes more sense, healthwise,to use ground turkey. And it is more economical as well. You could use this rcipe as a stepping stone to other vegetables and cheeses.I stuck with the roasted red peppers because I had a jar in the fridge that needed to be used. Small diced broccoli and pepper jack cheese would make a wonderful burger. Be sure you do not leave them on the heat too long.Lean meat dries out very fast and your burgers will be tough .Stuffed Turk...

Baby Burgers
2008-03-04 04:31:00
Usually when we make hamburgers, I form the meat patty to about the size of my palm (I stick with the Body for Life portion control guidlines). This usually presents a problem because it disappears as soon as it is transfered to the bun. The bun always engulfs my little hamburger patties; have to take about 10 bites around the perimeter before actually reaching the meat! But about a week ago, I had a lightbulb moment. What about whole wheat dinner rolls? They're healthier, tastier, and the perfect size for my little patties! I finally got around to trying it last night and they were fantastic: hamburgers with swiss cheese, mushrooms, and red onions...on a regular smallish sized Rhodes dinner roll. I made enough for seconds but was really full after the first. Same for Aaron (that's a miracle, folks). So today I'm officially changing my healthiest food posts to weekly rather than daily (thanks for the suggestion Lucas!). I think it'll be easier to keep up without losing the whole...

Sippy Cups and Burgers
2008-02-18 15:08:00
We moms do our best to keep our families safe. But in light of recent safety news, I think we're going to go find Saddam Hussein's worm hole and take up residence there. Not that I have to worry about toxic chemicals leaching out of sippy cups anymore. PunditGirl is way past that stage. When she was a toddler, I thought I was being a conscientious mom by providing her with chlorinated water, sugar-free fruit juices and organic, low-fat milk. But apparently, there's a good chance all those drinks were contaminated with toxic chemicals that have been linked to diabetes, breast cancer, and a whole host of other diseases I really can't think about right now.At least the food we're eating isn't contaminated, right?Unless I'm getting the ground beef directly from my dad's farm, it looks like burgers are off the menu here at Chez PunditMom-- almost 150 million pounds of beef have been recalled today because of possible contamination. I might feel like we had dodged a bullet, exc...

SCHOOLS DROP BURGERS FROM MENU AFTER DOWNER COW SCARE
2008-02-06 14:30:00
Humane Society video sparks mad cow fearsSchool districts coast to coast and some franchise restaurants are on full alert this week for suspect beef from a California slaughter house, where the Humane Society of the U.S. videotaped what appeared to be the slaughter of so-called "downer" cows."We're in contact with our suppliers, and they're in contact with their suppliers. It's a huge chain of activity," Joanne Tucker, a food services marketing coordinator for the San Diego Unified School District, told the Los Angeles Times.Cows that cannot stand up are banned from the food supply because it is a primary characteristic of an animal with Mad Cow disease. The Humane Society says it obtained video evidence that workers at the Hallmark Meat Packing Co. of Chino, California, repeatedly attempted to force "downed" animals onto their feet and into the human food chain. In the video, workers are seen kicking cows, ramming them with the blades of a forklift, jabbing them in the eyes, and a...

Here?s the link:http://www.shelleysbakeryc-afe.com/It?s a bakery as well as a café; I managed to resist the cakes and cookies only because I had to get home to relieve my babysitter. So tonight, it needed to be a simple dinner: vegetarian black bean burgers (and some oven-roasted sweet potatoes on the side). The first time I ever attempted making vegetarian burgers, I ended up with the world's most time-consuming pilaf instead. The evil King…of burgers
2008-01-28 23:33:00
From Oxfam:   January 28, 2008 Dear Blabby, Tell Burger King to improve farmworker wages. Farmworkers who pick tomatoes for Burger King earn 40 to 50 cents for every 32-pound bucket of tomatoes they pick, a rate that has not risen significantly in nearly 30 years. Workers who labor from dawn to dusk must pick two tons of tomatoes to earn $50 in one day. Recently, McDonald’s and others have agreed to higher wages for these workers, but Burger King has not. Tell Burger King to improve farmworker wages. McDonald’s and other fast-food chains, including Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, have committed to increasing wages and enforcing better working conditions in the fields. But Burger King—the second-largest hamburger chain in the world—has so far refused to work with farmworkers to improve wages for those who pick their tomatoes. Recently US Senators Sanders, Kennedy, Brown and Durbin and author Eric Schlosser (”Fast Food Nation”)...

Gourmet Burgers in McLean! A New Hot Spot!
2008-01-17 07:35:00
Welcome Joe’s Burgers! McLean has long needed a great burger joint – and here it is.  For a month or so people have been telling me of this great new place in McLean for lunch called Joe’s Burgers – knowing, of course, that burgers and fries are 2 of my staple food groups!  So yesterday I finally had the opportunity to go and see for myself. The inside is quite small - but accommodated the diners quite nicely.  There were 5 tables for 2 and 2 tables for 4 and a bar that seats 3.  That’s it – nice ambiance! The menu is simple – burgers, Kobe beef burgers, ostrich burgers, and a few chicken sandwiches - and everything comes with fries.  Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Iced Tea (and of course, beer/wine - but not at lunch, at least not for me) are the beverage choices – nice and simple and reasonably priced.  The service was super friendly, too! My FAVORITE part is that you can add mushrooms, bacon and/or ...
