Remember Burma (Myanmar)?
2009-01-06 19:36:00 Burma, or as their military has renamed it, Myanmar is a forgotten country which most people would not even think to look at on a map. As the news reported some time ago, several monks were killed in a government protest. After everyone read about it, they were shocked. But what most people don’t consider is ...
Will You Join Me to Help Free Burmese Human Rights Activists?
2008-11-17 21:56:00 From Campaign for BurmaOver the past few weeks, the ruling military regime in the Southeast Asian country of Burma has locked up over 100 human rights activists and sentenced them to long terms in prison. They join with Aung San Suu Kyi, the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient, as political prisoners in Burma.Just as many people came together to help Nelson Mandela when he was imprisoned in South Africa, I want to do something to helps Burma's political prisoners and Aung San Suu Kyi in their courageous struggle for human rights and democracy. Will you join me in signing an online petition to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon? The petition asks him to take immediate action to secure the release of all political prisoners in Burma, urges him to travel to Burma, and asks him to support a global ban on weapons sales to Burma's military regime. As you may know, Burma is ruled by a brutal military dictatorship that uses torture, systematic rape, and political arrests to su...

Austria's federal criminal investigations bureau says the ruby and other jewels were recovered and two men and a woman arrested in a raid Tuesday in the southern town of Villach. All three are suspected of stealing the ruby, along with diamonds and other gems, from a German jewelry dealer in Milan, Italy, in August. Police say the dealer, identified only as a man from the German city of Idar-Oberstein, was tricked into going to Milan by the female suspect. Investigators say the man was seriously injured by a car during the theft. Police put the total value of the stolen jewels at US$4.5 million.

Burma ? UN Report on Human Rights
2008-06-10 21:00:00 The United States appreciates the recent report of the United Nations Special Rapporteur for Burma, which compiles important evidence of continuing violations of human rights in the country. The U.S. shares the conclusions of the UN human rights monitor in his sobering report that the referendum on the regime?s draft constitution was far from credible; that the ongoing detention of political prisoners, including National League for Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and the conditions under which they are held, is appalling; and that the Burmese regime must respect the human rights principles of non-discrimination and accountability in the international effort to assist the victims of Cyclone Nargis. We remain committed to helping the victims of this humanitarian disaster and calls on the Burmese regime to uphold its pledge to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to allow international humanitarian workers and supplies unhindered access to cyclone-affected areas. We are concerned that fo...

Media Alert: Burma And The Making Of Iraqs Ghost Towns
2008-06-05 13:22:00 by Media Lens The Rules Of The Game The psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan once commented on how suavely we simply ignore great bodies of experience, any clearly analysed instance of which might present us with a very real necessity for change. (Quoted, Daniel Goleman, Vital Lies, Simple Truths - The Psychology of Self-Deception, Bloomsbury 1997, p.124) The problem for professional journalists is that they are not free to change. Or at least, they are not free to change +and+ flourish in their chosen careers. Ex-CBS producer Richard Cohen explained the relationship between media and politics: "Everyone plays by the rules of the game if they want to stay in the game." (Quoted, Daniel Schechter, The More You Watch, The Less You Know, Seven Stories Press, 1997, p.39) The rules include focusing intently on the crimes of others while suavely ignoring comparable, or worse, crimes at home. Consider the intense criticism heaped on the Burmese government for failing to accep...

Burma(Myanmar) cyclone linked to Global Warming...
2008-05-20 19:17:00 The hurrendous cyclone in Burma, which has been tipped to be amongst the worst natural disasters in history which left over 15000 deceased has links with Global warming, if Al Gore, an expert on Global Warming and ex-United States Vice- President is to be believed. His logic behind his claim seems to be pragmatic as he attributes this terrible occurance by mother nature to the rising ocean temperatures, courtesy Global Warming. Now we have the "ignorants" who claim Gore is trying to cash in on the loss of innocent lives to stay in the news. But let me remind them this is no ordinary bloke who's making headlines, he's a nobel peace prize winner. Wonder what bothers them when one is genuinely trying to alert people about something that's the biggest threat our planet faces. Even if what he's saying isn't true, do we keep on exploiting the Earth and wait to see if the effects of Global Warming exists? That's for the detractors to decide...
Cyclone Nargis--a "Grotesque" Disaster
2008-05-20 16:32:00 Yesterday, I wrote about Cyclone Nargis (Blog Post: Cyclone Nargis--Natural & Political Disaster), and ended my post will little resolved in my mind. This article from The Washington Post summons up my feelings on the recent natural disaster (turned political disaster) in Burma."THE STORY of Cyclone Nargis, which devastated much of Burma more than two weeks ago, long ago moved from the tragic to the criminal. It is now becominggrotesque."Diplomats from the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have announced they will hold a 'donor conference' in Burma's capital on Sunday. This will allow foreign ministers from around the world to preen and promise millions in loans and grants for 'reconstruction' that, if delivered, will enrich and empower the corrupt rulers of that unhappy nation. Meanwhile -- thanks to those same rulers--as many as 3 million people affected by the cyclone will still be suffering, and in many cases dying, because the regime refuses...

Cyclone Nargis--Burma's Natural & Political Disaster
2008-05-19 21:14:00 Burma and its citizens suffered from a catastrophic natural disaster when Cyclone Nargis made landfall on May 2, 2008. However, the poltical disaster that has followed the storm has only compounded the loss of life and suffering. It has been more than 2 weeks since the initial onslaught of the storm, and NPR reports that children are most in danger as aid workers continue to fight to be allowed to enter Burma.Today, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held a news conference, at which they stated that Burma is finally ready to accept help from international aid agencies and is ready to admit foreign medical workers from Southeast Asian countries.17 DAYS after the initial storm . . . !On May 15th, CNN reported that the death toll could reach as many as 100,000. That number is nearly 5 times what the Burmese junta is claiming the toll to be.It is hard to say home many deaths could have been prevented if a government that cared about the lives of its citizens was in power...
