  Evan Meek was designated for assignment this morning to make room for the recall of Sean Burnett.  Burnett has been excellent for Indy out of the pen posting a 0.98 ERA in 12 appearances over 17 1/3 innings.   BTW Take: Well, it is a day early to make me look like a mastermind.  I did call for a move last week to send Meek back.  In the return of the Pittsburgh Pirates Round Table (should be up in the next day or so), I actually called this move a couple days ago.  This move makes perfect sense.  Meek, while touted for a 97 MPH fastball, discovered if he throws it 89-92 he can control it better.  Only problem is, he is still wild but with a league average fastball.  In his most recent outing, he never topped 92 on the radar gun while being wildly erratic to the point of being unexplainably effective.  Over the last 2 outings he threw twice as many balls as strike but escaped due to the double play and anxious hitters chasing balls ...

Richard Griffin writes about the rising salaries of ace pitchers these days.  He suggests that Roy Halladay, signed through 2010, could enter the $18MM+ club with his next contract.  The best move for Toronto will probably be to let Halladay play out his current deal and leave.  He'll be 34 for the 2011 season, and his numbers have already begun slipping.  And will the forearm strains from '06 resurface in the next three seasons? Then there's 31 year-old A.J. Burnett.  Griffin, Mark Zwolinski, and Cathal Kelly discuss his situation here.  They accurately assess Burnett's post-'08 opt-out clause as lose-lose for Toronto.  If he pitches 180 decent innings, he opts for free agency because he can top the remaining two years and $24MM on his deal.  If he doesn't, the Jays are stuck paying an injured pitcher.  It's funny though that Burnett's five-year, $55MM deal signed in December of 2005 seemed mind-blowing at the time.

The Orioles didn't engage in conversations with agents for any free agents during the GM meetings - just trade talks with other teams (about 15 total). President of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said that he's open to trading with other teams in the AL East.  He just wants the best deal.  With that in mind, two Yankees who interest the Orioles are Melky Cabrera and Kyle Farnsworth.  The Yankees could employ Miguel Tejada at third base, if he's willing. Plenty of new hot stove talk involving the Mets.  Let's get into it. First off, there's the fact that Omar Minaya met with Scott Boras yesterday.  Minaya says he talked to Boras about all the players he represents.  Besides Mr. Rodriguez, Eric Gagne, Byung-Hyun Kim, Kenny Rogers, and Kyle Lohse may be considerations for the Mets.  Indeed, there is some buzz that the Mets could bring Kim in to compete for a rotation spot. So what about A-Rod?  He'd cost the Mets a ton of money, plus the #22 overall pick in the 2008 draft.  It sounds like the Mets may hear Boras out as a courtesy, and even put in an offer they feel is reasonable.  That number might fall far short of what it will take, as did theirs for Daisuke Matsuzaka and Barry Zito a year ago.  That said, Mets insiders aren't afraid of the full retail price of Rodriguez. The top priority remains pitching.  Carlos Silva, Tom Glavine, Hiroki Kuroda, and A.J. Burnett are on the radar....

Should Cards Pursue A.J. Burnett?

Viva El Birdos has a well thought-out discussion of the prospect of the Cardinals trading Chris Duncan for A.J. Burnett.  I have a few thoughts to add. In my opinion Burnett effectively has a one-year deal, only worse.  That's because he has the ability to opt out after the 2008 season.  So one of two things will happen: 1. Burnett is healthy enough to pitch 170+ innings, opts out, and secures a four-year deal somewhere. 2. Burnett is not healthy enough to pitch 150 innings and chooses to accept the $24MM owed to him over the 2009-10 time period (I consider 150-170 innings a gray area).  If a team trades for Burnett, endures an injury-plagued '08, and is then saddled with further burden, that's worse than a straight-up one-year commitment like Jon Garland's.  My other thought is that Duncan is not a fit for the Jays.  They're locked in with Lyle Overbay at first and Frank Thomas at DH.  Between Adam Lind, Travis Snider, and Alex Rios, the out...
