Taking the High Road: Tibet Invests in 53 New School Buses
2011-12-24 06:01:00
The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round... even in Tibet, ?the roof of the world?. The recent purchase of 53 new school buses by local authorities in Lhasa means many students in far-flung farming regions will ride to and from school in style (and safety) for the very first time.
China's Buses Include DIY Emergency Exits Disguised as Bricks
2011-11-27 06:01:00
In case of emergency, brick glass? Goodbye, yellow brick, road? Have brick, will travel? The puns come fast & furious when attempting to explain a low-tech safety measure found on Chinese passenger buses: yellow-painted, window-breaking bricks.

2011-10-28 06:01:00
There's no better way to see the sights of London than from the open top of a red double-decker bus, no matter that the bus in question is made in China. A landmark deal signed by Britain's Big Bus Tours sightseeing company will see 34 shiny new Chinese-made buses hit the streets of swingin' London just in time for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
10 Overly Cute Japanese School Buses That Go the Extra Smile
2011-10-24 12:01:00
Too cute for school? Not in Japan, where settling at mere cuteness means you're not trying hard enough. That high-pitched sound you're hearing isn't a school bus in need of a brake job, just its pint-sized passengers squealing "KAWAII!" in unison.
Deja vu experience: CTA OKs experiment with 2 electric buses
2011-04-18 02:28:00
This electric bus is being tested in Burbank, Calif. When I saw the Tribune and Sun-Times reports Friday about the CTA buying two electric buses to test on the mean streets of Chicago, I thought to myself, "That's not news. We wrote about that late last year."And for once, my memory was right. CTA Tattler and the major dailies indeed had reported in October about the $2.2 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration to cover the cost of two 35-to-40-foot electric buses and the electric-charging equipment. It turns out that the real news Friday was that the CTA board formally amended it capital budget and authorized the purchase of the buses....
Chinese Tunnel Buses Look To Hit United States [Shenzhen Company Establishe

Some Chinese exports are terrific. Lo mein, for example. Certain kinds of consumer electronics, like the cell phone with a built-in television complete with antenna, that’s also a thrill. Xenophobia rears its ugly head on CTA buses, trains
2010-08-26 14:00:00
Here's a CTA Tattler Tale from Derek about intolerance and group embarrassment: "I was riding a crowded #6 bus southbound this evening when a group of three young men got on and began speaking in a language that I didn't immediately recognize. However, I did hear them clearly pronounce the word "Sí", like Spanish. An older man sitting next to them heard it too, and started talking to them. I couldn't exactly hear what he said, but he finished with "you need to speak English." "I was already a little bit embarrassed by that statement, but I realized that what he had said had been even worse when one of the young men responded, "We are not terrorists, don't worry."...
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Enabled BEST Buses – Coming Soon!
2010-06-02 09:32:00
BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) buses have seen a drastic improvement over the last few years. There are several who don’t mind the extra road journey for the comforts of the new AC buses. Soon, more facilities will be launched making bus travel in Mumbai pretty comfortable. Let’s look at the facilities planned. Wi-Fi Bluetooth LCD screens System that will anounce next stop etc Wi-Fi has been on the charts for a long time now. The services will be provided to the commuter free of cost. Equifone Solutions, already offers interactive content via TV screens in buses. It also offers Bluetooth services. (Apparently, there’s a pilot project running on 150 BEST buses fitted with Bluetooth hubs – I would request any reader who has experienced to please comment (and let me know which routes have them)). The hub will deliver content such as mobile apps, and songs. LCD screens will features the news, job opportunities, stock quotes and other content ...

CTA to move Chicago Card reader on buses
2010-05-27 21:23:00
The CTA announced Thursday it will begin relocating the Chicago Card reader on buses from the left of the front door to the front of the farebox equipment starting May 31.  Do you think this will make boarding easier?"Moving the Chicago Card target will streamline boarding and allow the bus operator to better serve customers," the CTA said in a press release.According to the CTA, a decal will be affixed where the reader had previously been installed to let riders know that the reader has been relocated. CTA installed the readers to the left of the door in 2005.The readers will be moved according to bus garage. The first garage will be Forest Glen.  The routes are after the jump....
CTA gift to runners? Express buses
2010-03-19 22:10:00
"Going Public" was at the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle Expo today (go here for more information about the race) at Navy Pier. After leaving the expo, "GP" noticed there were few buses to pick up the dozens of runners trying to leave the expo (photo below). The CTA is listed as a sponsor on the race bag, and inside the bag there is an advertisement for ctagifts.com. The ad includes a mini CTA map. Problem is: The map includes the express buses that were eliminated last month because of service cuts.Find out after the jump how the Shamrock Shuffle may affect your bus route. ......
CTA cuts: Bring back midnight buses
2010-02-09 21:37:00
"Going Public" recently asked CTA riders to detail their commute before and after the CTA service cuts took effect this week. Tanya Vega, 40, of Austin previously wrote about how she wouldn't be able to see local bands because of service reductions. The rest of the "Sojournal" series is here."Life before the CTA cuts: Easier access to public transit at (most) hours of the night. I was fortunate (if you can say that) to witness the CTA cuts firsthand since the band i was reviewing at Elbo Room finished near midnight.Surprisingly, the Saturday schedule was still in operation for my ride home. The last bus going northbound on Central Avenue did run at 1:50 a.m. Life after CTA cuts: Monday's journey...
CTA rider: Express buses? Good riddance
2010-02-01 16:00:00
J. Carmen Vazquez of Lincoln Square wrote to "Going Public" with concern about the upcoming CTA service cuts."I am very concerned about  CTA riders and myself because of  the CTA service cuts. What is going to happen with all of us who have to go to work very early in the morning or have to go back home late at night? How are we going to move around if there is no CTA service at that time? We use the CTA because we do not have the money to buy a car. We do not have money to afford a cab. The CTA management is not considering our transportation problems. I wish they were standing at the bus stop or train...
CTA cuts: Buses already 'irregular'
2010-01-28 15:00:00
Rebecca Allen of Lakeview East shared her commute with "Going Public" for its "Sojournal" series, where CTA riders detail their commutes and talk about how they think it will be affected by the upcoming CTA service cuts. Rest of the series is here."I am usually out the door between 7:45-8 a.m. I arrive at State and Lake between 8:20-8:40 (!!), depending on when buses decide to show up at my Cornelia/Lakeshore stop and how long it takes for them to squeeze through Lake Shore Drive traffic. If I have time, I grab a coffee or Jamba and then head down to the Red Line. On a good day, I get to the Garfield stop by 8:45-8:50, and catch the No. 55...
You want to ride these CTA buses

The CTA year in the review, Q3: New hybrid buses; tougher policy on celling
2009-12-23 13:00:00
This is the third installment of the Tattler's 2009 CTA news in review, focused on the third quarter.July: The CTA admitted that passengers really didn't like the "max-capacity" train cars on the Brown Line very much. The CTA took delivery of the first of 58 new articulated hybrid buses. My brother Dan announced the relaunch of a better CTA Tweet. Readers gave lots of advice on "planning your CTA train entrance with and exit strategy in mind." After much passenger grousing, the CTA found some cash to extend the canopy roofs on the Belmont and Fullerton platforms. We saw for the first time the chilling CTA bus video that captured a killer's actions. The agency promised to fight harder against...
CTA touts airport service; Miller plugs free Saturday buses
2009-11-25 13:00:00
The CTA is urging us to use the Orange and Blue Lines to Midway and O'Hare on Thursday, and Miller Lite is pushing its double-decker buses every Saturday during this holiday (drinking) season.Wednesday and Sunday are the busiest travel days of the year. Longer trains on the Orange, Brown, Green and Blue lines beginning in the afternoon on Wednesday will help ease the pain. And the Blue Line slow zone elimination project means air travelers leaving from the Loop now can reach O'Hare with 40 to 45 minutes. So help keep cars off the road this week and use the CTA.Meanwhile, Miller Lite for the first time is offering free bus rides on Saturdays between the Loop and Wrigleyville, with...

School Buses No Longer Allowed on Apartment Grounds
2009-08-24 22:51:00
Two school districts are suing an apartment complex in Justice, Illinois, because the complex is no longer allowing the local school buses to make multiple stops within its complex. In a complaint filed today in the Circuit Court of Cook County, the Boards of Education of Argo Community High School and Indian Springs School District are seeking an injunction against Sunset Lake Apartments so that the districts' buses may be allowed access to the roadways within the apartment complex to pick up and drop off students, which the school districts assert had been the case for over twenty years without objection. According to the complaint, on August 13, 2009, the defendants requested that all bus stops be combined into one bus stop for the over...

The agnostic buses
2009-01-08 14:40:00
Click the link for an article. It says,'the campaign was originally started as a positive counter-response to the Jesus Said ads running on London buses in June 2008. These ads displayed the URL of a website which stated that non-Christians "will be condemned to everlasting separation from God and then you spend all eternity in torment in hell ? Jesus spoke about this as a lake of fire prepared for the devil". Our rational slogan will hopefully reassure anyone who has been scared by this kind of evangelism. ' So what slogan would we put out on the buses? Not, Smile Jesus loves you.God is angry with the wicked everyday.?I hate divorce.?God shows his love to us in that when we were yet sinners...?I have no doubt we would not have the freedom to quote parts of Rom 1 or Leviticus.Next the nomenclature. It is not an atheist campaign but an agnostic one. As Spurgeon pointed out, agnostic is Greek for not knowing. From the equivalent Latin we get, ignoramus. Personally I favour a little...

The environment’s been getting an unexpected boost on the Indonesian island of Bali in the last couple of weeks. And that meant some tourists had their trips well and truly disrupted. With bus ...

PinoyBlogoSphere.com - Buses Are Still On The Sidewalk
2008-06-10 13:35:00
Source: www.PinoyBlogoSphere.com - I’ve made a post in January regarding certain buses who have made the sidewalk along Paso de Blas their temporary terminal, or where they await and load passengers.  This is wrong, dangerous practice as it deprives the pedestrians the use of the sidewalk, and, at the same time, increasing the risk of reckless bus drivers hitting pedestrians as they maneuver their heavy buses ON the sidewalk.  Add to that the mere possibility of buses getting out of balance, as the sidewalks are inclined. And well, it seems that the buses are still ON the sidewalk up to the very present. See the photos I took of those inconsiderate bus drivers. Thanks for subscribing to the PBS feed (P.B.S.)

Bicycles to be allowed on trains, Singapore buses as part of 6-month trial
2008-05-22 01:17:00
Bicycles to be allowed on trains, Singapore buses as part of 6-month trial By Hiroshi Limmell, SINGAPORE : Cyclists will be allowed to bring foldable bicycles on board all trains and public buses, in a six-month trial. This is an initiative by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a study to meet the transport needs of diverse groups of people. The trial period is from May 24 to November 24 this year. Foldable bicycles will be allowed on MRT trains every weekday during off-peak hours and on SBS and SMRT buses on weekends and public holidays. The trial is one of several initiatives announced during the Land Transport Review. The Review recognises an increasing trend of people cycling for sports, recreation or as a means of transport. Although the move gives cyclists more convenience, LTA spokesman Jeremy Yap said public safety must still come first. He said, “Cyclists and other commuters are encouraged to be considerate and make way for one another, so that more people can use ...

CNG, diesel buses to ply on Ahmedabad BRT
2008-05-12 05:46:00
AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to ply buses running on compressed natural gas (CNG) as well as diesel on the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system here, an official said."We have now decided to use a mix of CNG as well as Euro-III diesel buses to ease out financial costs," said Municipal Commissioner I.P. Gautam Tuesday. He told media persons that AMC is veering towards diesel buses as "our purpose is to provide public transportation at affordable price".In contrast to the earlier stance of using only CNG-run buses on the BRT route, the AMC decision to use a mix of CNG as well as Euro-III diesel buses seems to be a major re-think over financial costs."A CNG bus now costs around Rs.75 lakh (Rs.7.5 million) from the earlier Rs.44 lakh (Rs.4.4 million) which is quite high. We have to look at the viability and affordability factor," he said.He said that the AMC was looking for the best option under the circumstances. "We are working on it and we have told the...

Singapore MPs to push for new law on seat belts in school buses
2008-05-04 01:32:00
Singapore MPs to push for new law on seat belts in school buses  Following eight-year-old schoolboy’s death, they plan to lobby Parliament for immediate action By Nur Dianah Suhaimi  IF ONLY I HAD BELTED UP: A road trip to Cameron Highlands two years ago left Madam Wai Foong Kwai, 54, paralysed from the neck down for four months. She did not have her seat belt on when the car she was in collided with another vehicle. — WANG HUI FEN   Enough is enough. No other child should die. Several MPs will be lobbying for new laws that will make it mandatory for school buses to be fitted with seat belts, they tell The Sunday Times. They are planning to speak up strongly on the matter when Parliament next sits, which is likely to be on May 26. ‘It is high time seat belts are made compulsory on school buses and the rule should be implemented immediately. This is very urgent because young lives are at stake,’ said Madam Cynthia Phua, an MP for Aljunied GRC. She and other...
Mumbai gets smartcards for local trains and BEST buses
2008-04-25 16:40:00
During my train travels from New Jersey to New York via Subway, I used to always think of how it would be to have a similar ticketing system for journey in crowded Mumbai local trains. The first thing that came to my mind - it was just not possible given the logistics and tracking involved. For those who are not aware, in US and UK (specifically for Subway trains and Tubes), the traveler has to just go to nearest vending machine before entering the platform, get a pass of standard denominations and swipe it before entering the train platform. Every time one swipes the card, certain amount is deducted toward your journey. No waiting in lines ! Now, to my surprise, even Mumbai seems to be moving towards similar system. The Central Railways (CR) launched "Go Mumbai" smart card - a first-of-a-kind travel card which works like a pre-paid telephone card, and can be used for travel on the local Mumbai trains and BEST buses. Guangzhou?s Armada buys 207 hybrid buses
2008-04-18 02:48:00
Armada, an "integrated group mainly engaged in bus tourism" with more than 5,500 buses running, is going to purchase 207 hybrid Eaton buses. The buses come from the same company that recently signed a large deal with Coca Cola. The powertrain is made up of a 6-cylinder diesel Cummins unit and a 44 kW electric motor. The buses will be delivered by Eaton from the U.S. but will be mounted completely in China. Guangzhou already has a test fleet of 30 hybrid buses.Compared to the existing LPG units, fuel consumption is reduced by 60 percent (but let's not forget to take into consideration the higher energy density of diesel), CO2 production figures are 25 lower and both NOx and particulates figures drop proportionally. Armada's fuel bill will be also 40 percent cheaper thanks to fuel savings. [Source: Eaton via Moteurnature]

School Buses Need Seat Belts
2008-04-07 01:53:00
I wrote a blog back in February discussing how school buses need seat belts to ensure student safety. Many people flock to the idea that a strobe light on the roof is a wonderful solution to passenger safety, yet mock the simple idea of seat belts - a common safety requirement in other vehicles. The Morning Call published a report by Tim Darragh on Sunday that begins with the following heading:"Morning Call survey finds more than 200 students might have avoided harm by wearing safety belts."In my original blog, I included a video that showed students being thrown from one side of the bus to the other when it rolled onto it's side. This could have easily been prevented had the students been wearing simple lap/shoulder seat belts. The report is worth a read. There are even quotes from a Kutztown Area Middle School school bus crash victim whose lasting injuries could have been avoided if seat belts were available on that dreadful day in 2004.Click here to read the report!
