2010-12-05 21:15:00 Today, I got a response from Avvo to yesterday’s post (and other posts) criticising them. Below is the comment to that post. Conrad from Avvo said, December 5, 2010 @ 10:26 am Charles ? not every lawyer appreciates the transparency that Avvo has brought to the legal industry, yet this is exactly what consumers want and ...
More Avvo Criticism & Possibly a Way to Game Avvo?s Defective Rating System
2010-12-04 22:01:00 Because of my public criticism of Avvo, and their defective rating system, I get a lot of comments about them. A brief summary of my crticism is that it’s biased against small and solo firms because larger firms have greater wherewithal to manage the extremely cumbersome Avvo profile process, and because Avvo won’t let an ...

A Controlled Democratic Design Process Gets Every Cubical Involved
2009-05-26 19:46:00 I recently read a really insightful interview with the members of the Griffin product development group on how they go about creating their wonderful accessories for the iPhone and iPod. One comment, in particular, struck a chord: How does the process begin? TC: Regardless of where the idea originates, the front end of the process is wide open; any one at Griffin can pitch a new product idea by writing up a one-page concept summary and presenting it to the team in a weekly product development meeting. That group bats it around, beats it up and decides whether it has enough potential to warrant further exploration. TC: A great product idea can come from anywhere. We all use and love the technologies that we build products to support, so sometimes we're just creating solutions that let us use our iPods and iPhones to do the things that we want to do. We also interact constantly with our customers to learn about their needs and pain points. Other times, we find an exciting techn...

Loyalty Points, What?s the Point?
2009-05-04 17:23:00 I recently had a discussion with my better half on how “Loyalty Points” are pointless these days. (Please excuse the pun!) I rather have a clutter free wallet than carry my Ikea or local hardware store loyalty card. Why accumulate points and work for delay gratification when I can get immediate ...

Getting Inside Design Strategies with Hartmut Esslinger
2009-04-28 19:03:00 Guy Kawasaki, in his usual 10 point interview format, talks with Hartmut Esslinger founder of frog design and someone BusinessWeek calls "the most influential American industrial designer since the 1930s". In the interview, Hartmut shares his thoughts on Steve Jobs' brain, "Why big companies create crappy products?", and his Top 10 best and worst products of all time. It is a great interview and a primer for Hartmut's new book: A Fine Line: How Design Strategies Are Shaping the Future of Business. (Out in June) I am looking forward to the book and will do a review as soon as I can get my hands on one! Interestingly in question #9 of the interview, we get to hear, from the "horse's mouth", why there was a limited success with the $100 Laptop Project. This pretty much echos my views I have shared in the past. Do check out the full interview transcript here. Via: iPlot

Design should be an Iterative Process not a Linear one
2009-04-08 16:24:00 Anders Ramsay, a UX designer, has done an excellent job in explaining on his blog the advantages of a iterative design process versus a "Waterfall" (or Linear as I call it) design process. He gets a nod from me for explaining that Industrial Designers have been practicing Iterative Design methodologies for a while. However, I have often noticed that with the pressures of time and budget, Industrial Designers tend to slide back to the more linear processes. This is very dangerous to do, why? Please let me explain.

Call them Clients? No, they are Business Partners!
2009-04-02 17:10:00 I recently visited the website of the book "The Art of Client Service" written by veteran advertising Account Manager Robert Solomon. Though I have yet to read the book (I plan to eventually!), the content really resonates with me, as it is a snap shot of the Strategic Design Management role I play daily. One thing that I find a little odd though about the Book?s title was the Book's reference of the "client". This is because I was part of a discussion where we agreed to reclassify "clients" as "business partners". Please let me explain.

Innovation? What a waste of time!
2009-03-28 14:31:00 Gadi Amit, president of NewDealDesign, writes at The Fast Company Blog that Innovation (or Design Thinking?), as championed by the likes of Bruce Nussbaum (BusinessWeek's Design Blog) and David Kelly (IDEO), is "killing" Industrial Design by forcing an "analytical structure" over something that is more intuitive. Very interesting, it sounds to me that this is very similar to what people often complain as the failure of most MBA programs. Has Design lost its way in the avenues of business plans and ROIs (return of investments)?

2008-11-25 15:00:00 Edit 1: Originally published 08 June, 2006. Edited and updated. Can you actually quantify something so subjective and intangible as a design or an Idea? Winning the Game of Business Management
2008-05-13 15:02:00 Modern business management practices, unfortunately, include too much numbers, graphs, presentations and calculations. But the most interesting thing is that most successful businessmen less favor this number game, they keep all definitions and thinking processes simple, straight and real; and is the major reason for their success. Many of today?s business managers go wildly after new strategies, technical advancements and new tools, increasing the complexity of their business. The success mantra for most successful businesses is simple ? good product, good pricing, good workplace and good customer service. They never try to adopt or implement anything negatively affect this mantra or which make the mantra complex. Although successful companies try to make the ?GOOD? in their mantra ?BETTER? with frequent changes they seldom try to make it ?BEST? with sudden changes. Remember for being successful, companies only have to perform better than competitors; not better than the economy.The...

Forturo.com-Your all-in-one business management software
2007-12-19 20:12:00 Many small and medium-sized companies need feasible business management solutions. Bennetts Technologies designed Forturo, a browser-based software, and this is actually the type of software that could improve significantly the way you manage your business.Forturo is highly flexible, customizable, secure and cost effective. And in this case cost-effective is not just a cliché. As you will pay solely for the modules you will use, it’s obvious that you will cut unnecessary costs.Such a tool makes perfectly sense when you need to track various administrative tasks that will otherwise require each a different software. Employee logs need time sheets, project management tasks need different software too track progress, and the list goes on. It makes perfect sense to choose a business management software that incorporates all features under the same platform and the same login. And it makes even more sense to be able to access this tool at any time, from any place, without needing to r...

Rethinking Freelance Work and Small Business Management: Part 2
2007-11-23 15:43:00 Starting from my last post?s question: What have I learned from these? I partly answered that. Let me expound my answers here and on the next posts. I learned, the hard way, that in order to succeed in managing your own business, you need to have these important traits in you:CommitmentOwning a business takes your management concerns into your sleep, at home, at play ?anywhere, anytime. As I have said, If you are not willing to sacrifice those times intended for other things you deemed important to you, you will not survive. You cannot delegate the task of oversight to any of your employee when you are starting. Your business needs your presence, and sometimes on a 7/24 basis. Yeah. I know that is not smart. But that is the kind of commitment the founders of known companies did.In my consulting, I have clients who have grown exponentially and yet the owners still man the helm. Larger companies? Do not go that far. Bill Gates of the Microsoft Empire has still the final say...

Rethinking Freelance Work and Small Business Management: Part 1
2007-11-16 13:43:00 I wish somebody taught me the peril of embarking on managing my own business. There was none. I started with sheer guts, coupled with my technical competencies, and management skills. I thought, those were enough ?I thought wrong. Hence, a couple of years later of operating, I had to close shop. After paying my employees, I was left virtually broke. What were my options?Going back to office work as an employee was on the top most lists, however being my own boss for quite some time, I hesitated. Going back to the corporate world is another big leap for me. I am no longer fitted to wade through office politics and corporate power plays, that is, what I thought then. I am done with that. The other feasible option is going on a freelance job as a management consultant. And so, I did. No corporate politics, no overheads, and no people to manage. I am my own boss. I dictate my pacing, and I still call the shots. I am earning a decent income, and it seems I am moving forward to...

Business Management Software
2007-09-02 17:53:00 My aunt runs her own small business at home. She´s selling creative gifts and articles for gardens. She really likes her business as she says, this way she doesn´t need to answer to any mean boss? questions. However, it wasn?t that easy to set up her business systems and controls to ensure that her business runs efficiently. She always asked my father about business and management since he´s into this field. But now I showed her this website called "Forturo" which offers Business Management Software.Forturo software is very easy to install and at the same time easy to use. It tracks the entire business process lifecycle through 7 modules. It helps you to manage customer contacts, quotes, ordering, inventory management, time management and invoicing. I told my father to test it before my aunt uses it and he was very impressed by its quality. It was really easy to use and one thing I?m sure of - her staff will get the hang of it in no time at all, with almost no training. Their strong...
