Friday Headlines/Buster Olney Time Machine Diary: Now With MB Update
2009-01-02 16:44:00 Cinderella story. . . comin' out of nowhere . . . about to become . . . World Series MVP Stupid Mets, be more helpful: The Cubs would've liked to send Jason Marquis home to New York (the Mets), but the Mets are addressing their needs one at a time and aren't looking at the fifth starter role yet. Sherman says the Rockies have long been fans of Marquis and like his bat. He could accumulate 80 plate appearances, I suppose. Hey Hendry, Buster Olney thinks you suck: The Cubs went into the offseason devoted to the priority of adding a left-handed hitter, and if they complete their negotiations with Milton Bradley, their lineup will look more balanced, on paper; on paper, their lineup will look better. But I'll be honest: I don't like the moves they've made, at all. I think that the flurry of moves have made them more vulnerable -- and in time, they'll wish they had just simply kept Mark DeRosa, an extraordinarily versatile and underrated player, rather than spending ...
The Roundup, Buster Olney, Orioles News...
2008-01-28 17:03:00 Well, since I will assuredly get minimal work done here today, here's some words of wisdom from Buster Olney's blog this morning. He's looking at the crystal ball towards the Orioles' immediate future, and it ain't good. From ESPN's Olney: "If the Orioles do follow through and trade Bedard and Roberts, they will be putting pieces in place that could help them in their attempts to reconstruct their organization. In the big picture, that's the right thing to do. But as they compete within a division that includes the defending champion Red Sox, the Yankees, the sleeper Blue Jays and the markedly improved Rays, the Orioles are poised to have the kind of season that will make you want to avert your eyes. Then again, they lost a game 30-3 last year, so is it really going to be much worse than the way it has been for the last decade in Baltimore?"Ouch.Hey, most figured that the Washington Nationals would be one of the worst teams of all time in '07; alas, they finished up with 73 wi...

Buster Olney on Johan Santana & Johan's New Contract Demand
2008-01-27 16:08:00 Piggybacking on Charlie Waters Sunday column, ESPN's Buster Olney reports the Red Sox have removed Jon Lester from the table. While this comports with the sneaking suspicion that the Red Sox have not been seriously involved in Johan Santana discussions for some time, one cannot definitively say something hasn't arisen from the Red Sox side that would have changed the availability of Lester i.e. a negative development with one of their starting pitchers. Charlie Waters reports in his column that a big sticking point in the Santana proposals is not the players involved, but Santana's desire for a six-year/$150MM contract! Despite that, Waters reports Santana is still expected to be dealt within the next ten days. He says the Mets' Fernando Martinez is the barometer for the Mets' desire to acquire Santana. He also mentions Red Sox prospect Ryan Kalish (Boston's 6th best per Baseball America) as the sleepr throw-in that Francisco Liriano was in the AJ Pierzynski deal. ...

Not So Fast
2007-12-10 00:37:00 According to Mike Lupica of The Daily News, Jay Gibbons should be lauded for his recent admission of HGH use:In the same week that Barry Bonds stood in a courtroom and issued not-guilty pleas to felony charges that are primarily about him being a stone liar on the subject of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs, Jay Gibbons of the Orioles did something rather amazing in baseball: He told the truth. "I am deeply sorry for the mistakes I have made," Gibbons said. "I have no excuses and bare sole responsibility for my decisions." Gibbons didn't come up with some phantom illness, offer some jived-up explanation of why he had to get the drugs from a dentist operating out of the trunk of his car. He didn't blame a teammate, didn't say he was unaware of what he was taking, didn't say he'd been tripped up by a tainted "diet supplement," always my personal favorite.Lupica couldn't be more wrong. For a long list of Gibbons' denials, equivocations, and disingenous statements, check ...
The Forgotten Confessers
2007-11-28 23:15:00 An item in Buster Olney's latest blog entry echoes a certain Rick Morrissey article which you may have seen 'round these parts:But isn't it an incredible coincidence that just about everybody who tests positive points to somebody else? Is it possible that some players actually knowingly took steroids? We could take the denials a little more seriously if somebody besides Matt Lawton acknowledged that he made the decision to take performance-enhancing drugs.Buster has been extremely thorough in his coverage of baseball's steroid problem, so I'm surprised that he, too, failed to remember these guys.
Mitchell Report To Stir Up Offseason For MLB
2007-10-13 02:08:00 According to a report by Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Mitchell investigation into the use of steroids and other performing enhancing drugs is going to be released sometime between the end of the World Series and the New Year. So who will be on it? Only the people familiar with the investigation know the names of ...

Fantasy Baseball Line-Ups & Buster Olney Chats
2007-04-16 16:06:00 There are plenty of baseball related chats going on today. Begun last Monday, the morning edition of Fantasy Baseball Focus chat will center on setting your weekly line-ups. Given my robust start to the Faketeams.com H2H League (14-6 and 1st place after two weeks), I want to do my best to make that showing one of expertise and not a fluky two-weeks. Former Mets GM Steve Phillips chats at noon, and he is followed by the always-interesting, heir apparent to the Gammons crown, Buster Olney at 1 PM. After yesterday's DL cornocopia, his AM blog and afternoon chat are must-reads. The work days ends with a standard edition of Fantasy Baseball Focus. How many different closer situations will be addressed today? The over/under is 9 and a half. If the over hits, then the chat's title should be changed to Fantasy Closer Focus. Click Fantasy Baseball Line-Ups at 11AM. Click Steve Phillips at noon. Click Buster Olney at 1PM Click Fantasy Baseball Focus at 3PM.

Fantasy Baseball Line-Ups & Buster Olney Chat
2007-04-09 17:53:00 We have a head-to-head league going at Fake Teams. After my first week in this format, I am 7-3. What is helpful is the chat ESPN is having at 11AM - Fantasy Baseball Line-Ups. Given my inexperience in the H2H format, I will be paying more attention than usual to other experts fantasy advice. At 1PM EST, Buster Olney chats. I expect some good information to come from there as his morning blog compels him to know more than he usually would. One cannot read all the daily papers and not know more. As with all ESPN chats, they are free to non-Insider subscribers while they are ongoing and go behind the subscriber wall when they end. Click Fantasy Baseball Line-ups between ~11AM and 11:45AM to enter. Click Buster Olney between ~1PM and 1:45PM to enter.
