Anime News Network with 5 Centimeter Per Second Theme
2008-03-26 18:39:00 Anime News Network is back at it with a website theme based on another favorite anime of mine. They have done this in the past with other anime that I like.
Indecisions
2007-09-11 06:45:00 Even after the third time I watch it, I seem to waver between considering the last part of Makoto Shinkai's Byousoku 5 Centimeter either a misstep or a masterpiece. Indeed, I do declare that the first two parts near perfection, but it's the third part that give me some consternation. The first time, I watched the whole 62 minute movie without subtitles, and I was moved. The second time, I was somewhat disappointed by it. This time, on the third watch, I'm picking up cues on some very important details that raise my opinion up again. The clues you can catch by paying very close attention is very consistent, and you can infer things that are rather unimportant in the end. But it's possible that Shinkai was far too subtle at the end. I actually had a similar issue with Shinkai's previous film, Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho (U.S. title: The Place Promised in Our Early Days), except that time I was wavering on the middle part of that movie. Updates from a Japanese Import Newbie
2007-08-07 00:16:00 I received an update from CDJapan last night that my order for Gekijo Animation Byosoku 5 Centimeter DVD Box [Limited Edition](DVD) and MIND GAME (English Subtitles) (DVD) was shipped. The email said that the shipment should take 4-12 days to get to me. I'll see how long it would take to ship. And for a small update, I watched the fansub of Byousoku 5 Centimeter last night and was highly taken in by everything except the ending. I still found it to be a very good film overall (excellent if I discount the ending) and I'll try to have more in an update later.

2007-07-17 01:46:00 Daike from the Makoto Shinkai Fan Web has put up pictures of the actual locations Makoto Shinkai used for the first part of Byousoku 5 Centimeter. I recognize all of these from the anime, and Daike includes some interesting commentary with the pictures. Check them out if you've seen the first episode from the movie. Byousoku 5 Centimeter - Licensed!
2007-06-22 02:24:00 I just got word from the Anime News Network that, as I expected would happen at some point, ADV has confirmed the licensing of Makoto Shinkai's Byousoku 5 Centimeter! I had several reactions to the news: Yay! The movie will be released in the U.S.! And probably with a good English dub too, given ADV's excellent work with dubbing Shinkai's previous movies. No! I won't be able to justify downloading the fansubs that will inevitably come out when the movie is finally released on DVD in Japan on Jun 19th! Yay! I'll be able to watch the entirety of the (expected to be) gorgeous movie in full DVD quality! I can't wait!
Byousoku 5 Cm - DVD Info
2007-05-28 07:22:00 I didn't have time and energy to writeup a Nick's Anime Update, so I"ll just forward this bit of news. Daike from the Makoto Shinkai Fan Web has put up the DVD release information for Makoto Shinkai's new movie, Byousoki 5 Centimeter. Looks like there will be two versions released in Japan on July 19th, a regular release and a limited version release. Check out the MSFW site for further information about what each release includes. Daike also translates some information from Shinkai's site about the potential of a Blue-ray or HD-DVD release. Essentially, it's not planned yet, but Shinkai is definitely interested in such a release. If that does happen, I might not be able to resist importing it at any expense, even if I don't have the equipment to play it!
