WBW #44 French Cabernet Franc
2008-04-02 13:34:00 Our host for this edition of WBW, the brain-child of Lenn of Lenndevous, is Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV. He chose French Cabernet Franc as theme for this month (ostensibly as a result of his recent trip tasting in France!). You can watch his vlog about the event here, but the jist is pick a French Cabernet Franc and post your link by April 2, 2008 in the comments to the entry on his website.I'll admit straight up that I sorta cheated on this one. Having been in travel mode since before Gary's theme announcement, I really didn't have much of a chance to pick up a bottle for this month or shop around. I popped into my favorite local shop, The Winery in Old Town Alexandria, and sadly could not come up with a full on Cabernet Franc. So I went with a 25% Cabernet Franc, 70% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon Bordeaux style blend. The wine is a 2004 Chateau Quercy Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. It clocked in at 13% alcohol by volume, had a real cork closure, and cost me $25.99. T...

Good Cheap Cabernet Sauvignon - 27 Reviewed
2008-03-04 00:00:00 It seems as though I've been reviewing Cabernet Sauvignon for ages. But to tell the truth, I really don't mind. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of my favorite varietals. It's considered the King of wines for a reason. Strong-bodied and elegant with complexity and intensity. Who could not love Cabernet? All together, ...
Alice White Cabernet Sauvignon
2008-02-27 00:00:00 G'day! Today's wine takes us down under to South Eastern Australia as we check out the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon from Alice White. We're also getting down under $7 in price, which is always tricky. Now and then I'll find an incredible bottle of wine for about $5, but that doesn't ...

2008-02-25 00:00:00 Surprise, surprise... I'm off to Chile again to try another Cabernet Sauvignon. This one from the Maipo Valley region in Central Chile, just south of Santiago. The Maipo Valley appellation is rather small in size but well regarded as a wine growing region, particularly for Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to its ...
McManis Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon
2008-02-25 00:00:00 If you're a regular reader you may recall my review of McManis Petite Sirah a couple months ago. I was so thrilled with it that I had to try another varietal from them and I wasn't disappointed. Since I already gave a little background on McManis in my previous post, I'll ...
2004 MADDALENA CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2008-02-19 01:57:00 There's only been one other time that I've rated two different varietals from the same winery as high as my last two ratings. As you may recall from my last post, if you didn't read it please look below, #1 and I absolutely loved the Sauvignon Blanc from Maddalena Vineyards. Not expecting near as much out of the 2004 Maddalena Cabernet Sauvignon, we opened this and let it breathe for thirty minutes or so. I poured a small tasting amount into my glass and swirled for a few seconds. Not the dark, ruby red you see in some Cabernets but more of a medium red color. As I took a nice, full amount of aroma into my nostrils, I was greeted with vanilla, plum and spices. On the palate I picked up raspberry, spiced cherries, a little bit of caramel and maybe just a little oak. Tannins were almost non-existent and this wine had a silky finish that made me want more. Lots more! Having enjoyed this bottle as much as their Sauvignon, I had to find out more. These grapes are sourced from the Cass...

Ramey 2005 Larkmead Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2008-02-16 03:40:00 The Ramey Jericho Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has been a favorite of mine for years, and for Valentine's dinner it was time to try the Larkmead Vineyard. The Ramey 2005 Larkmead Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon consists of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petite Verdot, and 1% Malbec. It has a beautiful dark red/purple garnet color in the glass. The nose shows dark fruit and berries, spice, oak, and toasted brioche. On the palate cherry, plum, black currant, and oak, with earthy mushrooms and elegant fruit on the finish. The tannins are well integrated, but still has that tart edge that you would expect for its youth. We really enjoyed this fruity, earthy cab with good spice and oak, showing of its elegant side on the finish. Jericho Canyon Vineyard is still a noch up for me but this one was truly great as well. For a few less dollars I would say they both match their quality with price point. I paired this wine with a Stilton topped filet mignon, served with a red wine r...

Big Dark Cabernet Sauvignon
2008-02-11 12:55:00 Even though this bottle of wine clocked in at 14.1% alcohol (which in my opinion, for a CA Cabernet Sauvignon is actually low) it was still a BIG wine. Kind of sad when I feel that 14.1% alcohol is low, but given that I have seen over 16% alcohol for some bottles, I would gather my perspective is a bit skewed, but that is a discussion for another day.The wine in question was a 2004 Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alexander Valley. It had a real cork closure and was purchased by my dad, so I don't know what he paid, but it looks to be available online for about $20. A word of caution, this wine needs more time in the bottle or a good decanting before you drink it.On the nose of the wine I found black cherry, blackberry, leather, and plums. In the mouth there were cherries and dark berries. The wine was tannic and the mouth didn't open up while I was drinking it, and I really only got the one glass since 6 of us were sharing the bottle!

Wine Upon Wine....
2008-02-04 12:34:00 One evening at my parents' house, a lot of wine was consumed in one evening. We had around 10 people at the house and the wine was flowing all evening.I believe this was the second bottle of the evening. We started with a Sauvignon Blanc, but my Aunt didn't like it and requested a Merlot. I just happened to have a Merlot blend on hand! The wine was a Chateau Rocher Corbin 2002 Montagne Saint Emillion. I purchased it for $18.99 minus a 10% case discount at The Winery in Old Town Alexandria, it had a real cork closure, and clocked in at 13.5% alcohol by volume. The wine was a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose I found dark fruit, blackberries, oak, and black currants. In the mouth the flavors were of black currants, plums, and other dark fruit. The wine was tannic and a bit chewy in the mouth, this was definitely a wine that would benefit from being consumed with food. We finished the bottle up over a roast turkey and all the fixin...

Christmas-a Month Late
2008-01-25 16:15:00 The wine for Christmas dinner was this bottle of 2004 Lake Sonoma Winery Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. I picked this bottle up at The Winery in Old Town Alexandria for around $22, it had a real cork closure, and clocked in at 14.5% alcohol by volume. On the nose I found currants, red berries, oak, leather, earth, and licorice. In the mouth the flavors were dark berries, cream, vanilla, black currants, and spices. Everyone loved this bottle of wine.It was served with a surf and turf dinner of beef tenderloin and baked stuffed shrimp, prepared by my cousin and my Godmother. Just turf for me, shrimp and I are not friends! The wine was an excellent match with the beef tenderloin, a perfect match for the dinner!

More Wine Gifts
2008-01-23 12:47:00 I got a lot of wine this Christmas. I took about a case to CT with me for holiday dinners and such and I returned back to VA with 2.5 cases of wine. People really like giving a wino more wine apparently! This bottle was a 2005 Francis Coppola Diamond CollectionIvory Label Cabernet Sauvignon. (Wow, that's a mouthful of a name for the wine.) It clocked in at 13.5% alcohol by volume and had a real cork closure. The nose on the wine was minty (something I've noticed in a a few Cabernet Sauvignons lately), and had vanilla and strawberry aromas. I thought this was oddly light on the nose with only a bit of spice, not what I usually expect from a Cabernet Sauvignon. In the mouth the wine was a bit darker. I found muted blackberry and thought the wine was a bit earthy. After a while some strawberries and black currants came through. The second glass of wine (drank about an hour after the first) was much better and more developed than the first. We actually stopped in at the Coppola W...

Wild Horses!
2008-01-20 17:24:00 The wine for the evening was a 2005 Wild Horse Cabernet Sauvignon. We decanted it because the flavors were really tight when we poured the first glass. We're also using our stemless Riedel glasses that we got as a Christmas gift (my first Riedel!). The wine was also a gift, it clocked in at 13.9% alcohol by volume, had a real cork closure and hails from Paso Robles. On the nose I found dark blackberries, cherries, black currants, and spices. It also had a little minty/vegetal essence to the aroma. In the mouth I got flavors of blackberries, spice, leather, and currants. The wine was really tannic and needs to be decanted for hours if you want to drink it now. I would estimate that we had the wine in the decanter for around 3 hours before it really opened up enough.

2007-12-30 02:18:00 Nothing to like, nothing to dislike. Make it your second bottle of the evening, so the alcohol of the first bottle dulls your taste buds and masks the finish. It goes well with black cherries. Oddly it will probably go well with cinnamon rolls. read more

Robert Craig 2002 Mt. Veeder Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2007-12-18 05:45:00 I went over to my neighbors last night to give them some homemade Christmas treats and I got a treat right back in form of a glass of Robert Craig 2002 Mt. Veeder Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.I have had the Robert Craig Affinity (their Bordeaux blend) at several occasions before and always enjoyed it, but this wine was definitely a notch up.The color in the glass is a deep red garnet color. Big ripe berries, black cherry and black currant meets you at the nose with oak and vanilla notes. The palate is equally lush with dark berries, black currant, and a long finish with violet candy, black liquorice notes, and supple, well integrated tannins with matching acidity. This was a really good glass of wine and as soon as I finished my glass I wished I had a bottle waiting at home. The quality of the wine very much matches the price tag; available from $60 at Wine-Searcher.com. I would happily spend my money on this wine any day.Vote for my blog here and help me reach top 10 on The Blog Top!

Valhalla Cellars 2004 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2007-12-14 03:14:00 I could not resist picking up a bottle of Valhalla Cellars 2004 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon when I saw it on the shelf in the local grocery store. Being from Sweden with our heritage of Norse Gods and Valhalla I just had to try this wine that I had never heard of before. I just loved the label with the viking ship!Valhalla Cellars was founded in 2001 by Todd Martin and Madeleine Beeler Warner, both of Scandinavian decent. Therefore the name of their label. They are small producers that buy grapes from top vineyards in areas that produce the best quality grapes for the wine they intend to produce. This wine was fermented in open top fermenters with the cap punched down 3 times daily. Picarus Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon
2007-12-07 00:00:00 Before reviewing the Picarus Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon, I’d never heard about the Wrattonbully wine region. So before opening the bottle did a little research and I found that the relatively unknown Wrattonbully wine region is located in South Australian between the Padthaway and Coonawarra wine regions. Apparently according to Wine Australia, there is very little variation in the wines across the three regions. The Picarus Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon is a full bodied wine with distinct berry and blackcurrant notes and oak flavour. The grapes are nurtured by renowned Coonawarra district viticulturist, Greg Koch and made by ex-Wynns Coonawarra/Southcorp legend, Rob Moody. Greg and Rob first became involved in the production of Picarus with the highly acclaimed 2005 wines. Picarus recommend that the 2006 Picarus Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon is ready to drink now, but will be in its prime in 5-7 years. The Picarus brand is Winetrust Estate’s premium wi...
Vino Volo and Caymus Vineyards 2005 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon
2007-12-06 02:39:00 Going to Las Vegas last weekend our flight out of Sacramento was delayed for 4 hours, which gave us plenty of time to kill in the airport's wine bar, Vino Volo. Vino Volo is a chain of airport wine bars with five current locations; Seattle, Sacramento, Washington DC, Baltimore and New York, and with plans to expand and open many more locations in the upcoming year.Having the option to visit Vino Volo made me very excited as airport food and drinks, in general, gives me the shivers... Vino Volo adds a touch of sophistication with good quality wine by flight, glass or bottle. Small plates are also served. We tried the cheese plate, chicken panini and the New York skewers with mashed potatoes and peas. All a step above all other airport food I have ever had. I started of with the Pinot Noir wine flight featuring a California pinot from the Molnar Family 2005 Poseidon's Vineyard, from France the Louis Latour 2002 VOLNAY, and from New Zealand the Nevis Bluff 2003 Pinot Noir. Cabernet Sauvignon - Head of the Class
2007-11-13 16:19:00 I love Cabernet Sauvignon. It seems to be my "signature" wine and when in doubt - I go Cabernet. Now, its not that I don’t drink other red wines. I do. In fact, sitting on my kitchen island last week was a bottle of Cotes du Rhone and a bottle of Spanish Rioja. One likes to be prepared for visitors and most of all, my daily "heart medicine" as prescribed by the doctor (boy, was he preaching to the choir when he told me to start drinking a glass of red wine a day). I love the red table blends, cuvees and some of the hard to find single varietals like Malbec, but I usually find my way back to Cabernet Sauvignon.Last week I had an opportunity to taste three newly released Cabernet Sauvignons that just happened to have a lot in common - all three Cabernets were produced in the Walla Walla Valley, all three are of the same vintage - 2005, and most of all -- all three Cabernets were produced by three winemakers that were my viticulture/enology classmates! It was exciting for me to taste... |
