We get a TON of requests for the PHP APC pecl module because after having adopted suPHP into our configuration, eAccelerator is worthless. It’s quick to install, and especially if you’re running suPHP or phpsuexec, each user can maintain their own settings within their local php.ini without me having to do anything — basically ...
caching in the coal region

Last Saturday we did some caching in the coal region of PA.  That’s always an interesting area to visit for me.  Growing up I went to the mountains with my grandfather in the Hazleton area and some of the older people there were miners at one time.  I learned a lot from them and enjoyed ...

Purplenova 3.4 - Remote PC Access, Caching, Enhanced Widget
2008-02-18 14:46:00
Purplenova 3.4 has just been released, and it gives users the ability to reach the file system on their Internet connected PC from a remote browser. You do not need any plug in or software on your remote browser that you use to access your file system. So for example, you can now reach the File system on your PC from a mobile as well. While Purplenova has always been positioned as a 'Server' offering (a dead-simple alternative to web-hosting at data centers) rather than a system that allows you 'remote access to your PC', some of our users felt remote access would be a nice-to-have feature in Purplenova. Remote File System viewing needs to be enabled from your Purplenova software (see Accessibility Tab under Settings). In order to reach your PC from a remote browser, you need to login to your Purplenova account (http://portal.purplenova.net)- and then look under the content tab. The file system view is optimized for the mobile browser. Caching has been enhanced in Purplenova ...

Get a faster browsing experience - using a local caching DNS
2007-10-26 00:28:00
Some days ago while I was on a business trip, and trying to work in the Hotel, the second day the Internet connection was really slow, (maybe some other guest was downloading a lot of information), while trying to look for some information on the web, it took lots of seconds to even get the IP of the pages I was trying to visit. I decided that I needed a local DNS on my PC to improve at least a little my speed experience. Installing Bind apt-get install bind9 As soon as it is installed it is ready to answer your queries, but here is a example of my configuration. directory "/var/cache/bind"; auth-nxdomain no; # conform to RFC1035 zone "." { type hint; file "/etc/bind/db.root"; }; zone "localhost" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.local"; }; zone "127.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.127"; }; zone "0.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.0"; }; zone "255.in-addr.arpa" { type ma...
Disabling WSDL Caching
2007-10-15 17:04:00
Following are the steps to disable WSDL Caching. 1. Go to php.ini 2. Look for soap.wsdl_cache_ttl = “86400″. This is the default setting. 86400 is the number of seconds in a day. So when it is set to 86400, it would mean the cache is set for 1 day. 3. Change this value to zero. Once done, restart ...

Geo Caching
2007-08-29 07:02:00
It’s been awhile since we’ve been letterboxing. In fact, I think we’ve found all the boxes in our area and that’s why I would like to move on to geo caching. But first, we need a good GPS and few other supplies. There are a lot of places to visit when you’re shopping for a system, but make sure you stop by Tiger GPS because they have a lowest price guarantee and that is so neat! That means that if I find another GPS out there that is less expensive that a system at Tiger GPS then Tiger GPS will beat that price. I mean really, can you beat that kind of deal?? Now…I need to hang out at Tiger GPS and do some research so I can pick the best system for needs!
How do I prevent caching of my web page?
2007-08-25 01:47:00
To request that your web page not be cached, you must put a No-Cache directive in the <HEAD> section of the web page. <META HTTP-EQUIV=”CACHE-CONTROL-” CONTENT=”NO-CACHE”&-#62; <META HTTP-EQUIV=”CACHE-CONTROL-” CONTENT=”NO-CACHE”&-#62; is the HTTP/1.1 compliant method of requesting that a web page not be cached. <META HTTP-EQUIV=”PRAGMA”- CONTENT=”NO-CACHE”&-#62; <META HTTP-EQUIV=”PRAGMA”- CONTENT=”NO-CACHE”&-#62; was the HTTP/1.1 compliant method of requesting that a web ...
IE Caching issue with AJAX HTTP GET request
2007-07-29 09:57:00
There is one very annoying issue with IE using AJAX when you use a HTTP-GET request (I haven't faced this problem with HTTP-POST request). I tried following but nothing seemed to work:response.setHeader("Cache--Control","no-cache"); //HTTP 1.1response.setHeader("Pragma",-"no-cache"); //HTTP 1.0response.setDateHeader ("Expires", 0); //prevents caching at the proxy serverSo we need to fool IE to consider the request as new request everytime, and you can fool IE by adding current timestamp at the end of your url. You can do following in your Javascript code:url= url+"?currDate="+ new Date(); if your url is simple like /test/something.doORurl= url+"&currDate="+ new Date(); if your url contains request parameters and looks something like /test/something.do?id=1234

How can you prevent caching in JSP?
2007-06-01 17:03:00
Execute the following scriptlet at the beginning of your JSP pages  to prevent JSPs from being cached by browsers. You need both the statements to  take care of some of the older browser versions. <%response.setHeader("C-ache-Control","no-cac-he"); //HTTP 1.1response.setHeader("Pra-gma","no-cache")-; //HTTP 1.0response.setDateHeader ("Expires", 0); //prevents caching at the proxy server %>  If the above fails, try changing the first line to response.setHeader("Cache--Control","no-store&qu-ot;); //HTTP 1.1
Caching in PHP: Cache_Lite
2007-05-31 00:28:00
For many web application developers the concept of caching is foreign. Most of us build our pages, query our databases, and spit out the results. This is usually sufficient as the content is entirely dynamic. There are times, however, when the data, although not static, doesn’t change very frequently, and can benefit from caching. Caching ...

Application wide image caching in Flex
2007-05-22 00:51:00
I’ve been tossing this idea around for awhile.  I decided to build an image loader that would allow for application wide image caching in a Flex project.  The concept uses a singleton instance as a dictionary type object .  It maps BitmapData representations of loaded image to the url’s they were loaded from.  That way ...
Adobe Media Player = Joost/YouTube/Metacafe with Caching???
2007-04-18 07:04:00
It's not often I say this, but could Adobe have actually produced a program I might enjoy having? I have huge gripes with Adobe over their long load times and slow response, not to mention horrible vista support when it comes to applications like Photoshop and Illustrator especially when their apparently the industry standards and i feel when it comes to the big mainstream corporate Adobe apps like those adobe needs a strong competitor to slap it in the head and get it back on track to streamlining.   But Flash is a different story, I don't know if its because it was actually a macromedia product, or what but from the look of it flash itself seems to ooze wickedness. Even with adobe in the development seat. As you might recall a day or 2 ago I announced that adobe would be releasing the Adobe media player for flash content. What I didn't realize at the time was just how wickedly amazing this program would actually be, I figured it would be basically a VideoL...
