Double Chocolate And Pear Cakes
2009-09-21 16:34:00 When I look out the window, it is hard to imagine that Fall officially starts tomorrow. We have two seasons here more or less, Warm and Hot. Christmas celebrated in a summer dress, well, "it ain't fittin'. It jes' ain't fittin'" But there are signs that cannot be mistaken. Night falls earlier, the wind has finally picked up, the pecans are weighing the tree branches down. The light is now giving cold blue undertones, I put the diffuser back up in the studio, my shooting schedule has changed. Most importantly, the oven is buzzing with tarts, custards and cakes like these Double Chocolate And Pear Cakes, a gluten free adaptation of my mother's recipe.I like spontaneity as much as I like certain family rituals. One that my folks have back home is to get together for tea time everyday around four or five o'clock. Even now that my grandmother is gone, my mother makes the same one yard walk to my grandfather's and continues the tradition. One of my fondest memories is always this ...

Q&A: Duff Goldman of soihadto and 'Ace of Cakes'
2009-09-02 17:11:00 Fun to chat with Duff Goldman, star of Food Network's "Ace of Cakes" and bassist for instrumental rockers soihadto (who help local label Grape Juice Records celebrate 5 years tomorrow at Double Door). A few particular items stand out from our conversation, plus a few that didn't make it into the story:-- Who knew that Tom Colicchio of "Top Chef" was a well-regarded guitarist?-- Pretty hilarious that anyone would request a baby-shaped cake for a baby shower. Understandable but yeah, creepy to actually do.-- Why soihadto is an instrumental act: "We just realized singers are a pain in the ass. You just don't need 'em to tell a story."-- Duff spoke at length about how he loves being hands-on with...

Apricot And Lavender Brown Butter Tea Cakes
2009-08-18 07:31:00 It's always a bit of a gamble with apricots. Their intoxicating sweet floral fragrance. Their soft velvet skin. I'm tempted. They look good, smell good and alas they have little to make me swoon. I did get lucky last week when I picked some right off a friend's tree on the island and made these Apricot and Lavender Brown Butter Tea Cakes. They sent me right back to our garden in Provence. Right back to all the great memories of my brother Thierry. One year ago I wrote this. Nine years have gone by since I have told him anything. I'd rather write about him. Peace finds its way into my soul a lot more as the years go by. Each time speaking a little louder about the good times. If I listen carefully, each year I remember another story. I usually end up gazing outside the window exclaiming "I can't believe you made me do that!" And I smile.Calm and quiet. That's how I plan to spend the day. A little bit like in the picture above. Life. I am in it with a good laugh and I am with it ...

Drive-Thru: Cakes, Cookies, Donuts, and Julia Child Gets Mad Props
2009-08-05 19:35:00 Fruit Slinger comes across some donut peaches, and of course, makes peach donuts. It's the time of the summer to make delicious-looking cakes with fruit: would you like to try cherries or blueberries? Veal Cheeks visits a recently reopened (and absolutely gorgeous) ice cream parlor in Indiana. In preparation for the Friday opening of the movie Julie and Julia, The Stew covers some of the local restaurants paying homage to Child (and Top Chef wizard Stephanie Izard will be joining in the fun as well). For your next pastry crawl: Time Out has assembled a list of five important sweets for you to try (they cited six but I don't count the Wild Cherry Icee from a college cafeteria). Eating...

Peach Chamomille Mousse Cakes
2009-06-12 16:13:00 There are times in your life when you need to pull out all the stops, set up a special table, make an extraordinary tasty meal and just twirl some caramel strands around pretty mousse cakes. When crap hits the fan outside of my comprehension I just try to deal with it the best way I can: doing the things I know, doing them with dedication and focus. Yes, like twirling caramel strands around Peach and Chamomille Mousse Cakes.Granted, my normalcy may not be yours but we all deal differently with stress and incredible circumstances. You might set out to clean your closet or reorganize your files. B. takes the house on a vaccum marathon. I usually go to the dock, take a huge breath in and go home to try to find some way to reconnect and it always ends up with the kitchen counter covered in sugar and flour. I also forge ahead in the photography and writing projects I have (portfolio is finally visible!), happy not to have a minute to think too much about the telephone ringing. (I did pre...

Indian Cardamom Mava Cakes
2009-06-04 06:21:00 Many days of the week, I wish I could just call up my friend Bina to come and have tea or coffee with me. I know my afternoons have never been sweeter as since she shared her Mava Cakes recipe with us. I am very fond of a little tea break and I am very fond of Bina. We "met" when she emailed about her macarons issues. We just went through every problem, one by one, laughing along the way. Like with most friendships, it is difficult to explain how the pieces of the puzzle just fell into place. We started sharing a bit more each day, her about India and me about France. We finally met in person and confirmed our friendship went deeper than a computer screen. We cook the same way, from memory, from family, for others, always worried people are going to enjoy themselves and have enough. Our cultures are miles away from each other and yet we relate by cooking like our ancestors did. Our way to keep alive the generations before us and pass it on to the ones after us.Bina is funny, talented...

Cold Strawberry Mint Soup and Apricot Tea Cakes
2009-02-18 06:11:00 Some things are meant to be paired. You know, that cute mug and that lovely tea, cookies and milk, cupcakes and frosting, apple pie and vanilla ice cream, etc.. They are tasty on their own, and we can survive without one or the other, but they make sense together so why pass on the opportunity to have them both, at the same time, together, dunked, dipped, smeared, spooned, and scooped?....This is what happened the other day with apricot teacakes and cold strawberry mint soup. I had a long night ahead of me and decided to make some tea cakes to help me through hours of file organizing instead of popping open a bag of chips and mindlessly muching my way through the entire bag. Withing 40 minutes or so I had about one dozen dried apricot tea cakes cooling down and we could not resist sampling one. Delicious and satisfying on its own. That same day I also had become the instant parent of a 6 pound box of strawberries (they are in season right now in the Southern US) and after making ice ...

Eggless Butter-Less Chocolate Muffins (Vegan)
2009-01-21 06:42:00 One day the baking bug bit me. It bit me so bad that by the weekend, I was itching like a mad woman to bake something! I usually have all the ingredients but sadly, no eggs. Since there are tons of eggless cakes out there, I decided to do a quick search. Allrecipes had my answer. There were tons of eggless cakes and eggless chocolate cakes in there. Some had warnings that eggless cakes will not be as moist and spongy as the ones with eggs. I beg to differ as the person who tried and tested the following recipe and dare them to look into the poor, innocent faces of these muffins and say the same thing again! I adjusted the measurements slightly to suit my need and what's more, this one is also butter-less.Eggless butter-less chocolate muffins with frostingSo here is my eggless and butter-less chocolate muffin recipe. You can also bake it into a cake if you want. I used some frosting to add some buttery goodness to it but avoid that for a vegan version. If you had told me last month t...

Basic White Cupcakes
2008-12-29 04:46:00 The best way to start baking after a long time - from the basics. I have always loved the simplicity of plain cakes, or tea cakes, as they are sometimes called. My mom used to make them quite regularly as a snack when we were in school. She used those manual egg-beaters that formed beautiful white peaks when the egg whites have been beaten for about 45 minutes. This recipe doesn't call for beating the egg too much cuz since I don't have an electric beater, I go for such recipes mostly. What I Used:(Makes about 16 cupcakes)Butter - 1/2 cup, at room temperatureAll purpose flour / maida - 1 3/4 cupsPowdered sugar 1 cup (measure after powdering)Egg - 1Milk - 3/4 cup, at room temperatureBaking powder - 1 tspVanilla essence - 1 tspHow I Made It:1. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees.2. Cream butter and sugar together until nicely mixed.3. Use a fork and whisk the egg for about 10-15 minutes. The more you beat, the softer the cupcakes turn out. I lose patience at the end of 15 mins or so.4. Sift...

Pear And Pecan Tea Cakes - An Afternoon With Grandma
2008-10-27 06:50:00 I'd like to dedicate this post to another great lady, Bri who passed away last night. My sincere condolences to her husband and her family.A post I was reading the other week prompted me to take out my grandmother's china and silverware out of their cases and bring them to life for a little while. The time of a dessert, a picture or a post. The time of a memory I might give my mother about a certain time in her past. I know I'll never be as creative as Pia in styling and setting the mood for the pieces I inherited but the moment was right to polish those spoons and dust off those cups.I started to take pictures of the spoons on their own and although pretty, something was missing. I made some tea and hoped that the smell and relaxing atmosphere would inspire me a little. It was allright...not bad, there was still that little "je ne sais quoi" missing. I took a step back and tried to remember the last time I had seen my grandmother use those pieces. Had I? Ever? No, not really.......

See if the cake you pick is among the favorites. It's so fun that the kids and I did it several times! The cakes are really great - far above my personal decorating (or lack thereof) skills. Apricot And Wattleseeds Tea Cakes
2008-08-05 06:29:00 I know I am not the only one in this case and it might come as no surprise to you if I say that my husband rarely reads my blog. It's not that he does not care but I talk about the post the moment I make the cake, dessert, pastry, etc...so by the time I take the said dessert out of the oven or off the stove, he already knows what I am going to write and talk about. You can imagine that the last post about the "faisselle" my father loves so much brought back a lot of memories and we spent a couple of evenings reminiscing about our childhood favorite summers. It made me realize that I was a deeply nostalgic person, but not a sad nostalgic always wishing it were still the good old days. No, I am a content nostalgic. Memories appease me, wrap me up like a soft blanket and give me a sense of direction. It is hard to find the calm when words and events hurt you or saddened you and instead I try to find a way to let them in, to let them show me a missing key to that big puzzle that is life...

Threadless is one of my favorite clothing purveyors - they make t-shirts based on user-submitted designs, and I own far too many of them (such as this, this, and this, and yes, I love giraffes). Cherry - Orange Blossom Cakes
2008-06-17 23:54:00 More cherries! I went to visit an old friend this weekend and at the end of our visit, she handed me a bucket and pointed at the cherry tree we could see from her living room window "Go headed...Go get them. They are delicious". Her husband tends their vegetable garden and it is always a treat to visit them as I am fed fresh tomato sandwiches, cucumber salads and tiny yellow "mirabelles" for the few hours that I am there. I rarely come home empty handed either. We come from different cultures and yet share many things, we are also quite apart in age but I found Beverly to be a child at heart, one who wished she was not limited to her house right now, one little girl aching to run in the fields and drink icy cold lemonade. Her husband and her are a example of love and understanding, passed the illness, the tantrums, the tough nights. Otis cries sometimes when I am there, quietly, while filling his bucket of water for the herb garden. They have been through this twice already, and Beve...

Semolina Cake
2008-06-02 09:38:00 This has got to be my favorite cake. Not only has it got sentimental value - this was my wedding cake, it is also because I love that it is very moist, grainy and has a very buttery taste.I've baked it too many times and on this occasion when my sister wanted to bake a butter cake, I requested for semolina instead. I was also eager to try taking some pictures with the camera to see how it would turn out.It was easy work since my sister helped measure out all the ingredients and set up the Kenwood cake mixer which by the way is probably as old as I am! My dad fixed it up a few times over the years and it still works. The only problem is that we can only set it at one speed! No matter - we just had to be careful when sifting in the flours!SemolinaTesting out the cameraOur very ancient cake mixer whichcost my Mom her whole month's salary back in the '70sTa dah!Cake broke into half despite all efforts to keep itwhole when transferring. It good! We polished it off within a day. ...

2008-05-30 14:56:00 So, my granddaughter graduated yesterday. From kindergarten. Why do kids need a graduation ceremony to go from kindergarten to first grade? I am not complaining. It just seemed odd to me. I am a very simplistic person. Having homeschooled for 20 years I have had two kids so far graduate from high school. It was a ...
