TIME Magazine Calls Jay Leno the Future of Television (Moment of Silence Pl
2009-09-04 19:13:00
Dear James Poniewozik, I hope you’re happy. And by that I mean, was it really necessary to ruin my holiday weekend by reminding me — on the cover of the the new issue of TIME Magazine no less — that Jay Leno is the future of television. I mean we’re talking about NBC here. Of course Jay Leno is the future of television. This is after-all the perennial fourth place network that is so desperate for a win, they took it upon themselves to crown Conan O’Brien the new king of late night two weeks into his tenure. The network that we’re fairly confident will import any show from any country in an effort to find the next OFFICE. Heck, over a decade later, NBC President Jeff Zucker, Kevin Reilly, Ben Silverman, Andrea Bromstad is still searching for the next FRIENDS. That, and you said it yourself, “NBC has set the bar low enough for a sleeping man to clear. If Leno can just get the ratings he did in late night, some 5 million viewers (paltry by 10 p.m. sta...
Conrad calls on rural telecom
2009-09-03 14:00:00
"Rural telecom Consolidated Communications (NSDQ: CNSL) pays some of the safest and most generous dividends on the planet," says Roger Conrad in The Utility Forecaster."Rural wireline phone companies are corporations. But thanks to numerous non-cash income statement expenses and opportunities to boost efficiency and cut costs, they also effectively flow through pre-tax cash flow as dividends."In one sense, rural phone companies are like energy unit trusts. Their key resource -- local phone lines -- is constantly depleting as customers switch to wireless phones, or adopt Internet-based service. "Long-term sustainability depends on replenishing the resource with acquisitions of more rural phone lines and up-selling customers to broadband service."Even more important is the level of free cash flow, essentially operating cash flow less debt interest, cash taxes and capital expenditures. Free cash flow can be increased by boosting revenue, cutting ...

Board Of Ed President Subpoenaed - Says He Never Made Calls
2009-08-05 17:51:00
From the Sun Times:  Asked whether he has ever made a call on behalf of someone else, Scott said, "Nope. Never." Scott said the Board of Education launched its internal investigation of the admissions process before the federal grand jury issued separate subpoenas for school records and Scott's testimony. Asked whether he had ever heard of a call being placed to get a student clouted in, he said, "That's a different question. You asked me if I made a call. No comment. It's an ongoing investigation."What do you make of that evasive answer?  And who else do you think is going to get subpoenaed?...

Wyatt calls on Verizon (VZ)
2009-07-15 14:00:00
"We're at the early stages of witnessing a transformation of wireless activities away from voice and towards data for personal and business customers," says Ian Wyatt. In The Recovery Portfolio, he adds, "This portends great things Verizon (NYSE: VZ), which has the best wireless network in the U.S. in terms of reliability and innovation, and a wealth of high-end wireless data users already.'"Verizon provides wireline service to 35 million access lines and 87 million wireless customers. It recently picked up 13 million of these wireless subscribers upon completion of its $28 billion purchase of privately held Alltel in January. "My investment thesis for Verizon is all about growth in its wireless operating segment. Smartphone penetration, which is more profitable for Verizon, is still small and growing very rapidly. "While more affluent individual and business users have been using Smartphones such as the Blackberry, Palm,...

Obama calls for immigration reform
2009-06-21 15:00:00
President Obama is finally speaking publicly about immigration reform. He addressed the Esperanza National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast and Conference, the largest Hispanic faith-based evangelical network in the United States, on Friday in Washington, D.C.The event didn't garner a lot of press but there was a good story on CNSNews that said Obama would work for immigration reform and fulfill his campaign promise."We also know that keeping this promise means upholding America's tradition as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants," Obama said. "Those things aren't contradictory; they're complementary. That's why I'm committed to passing comprehensive immigration reform as president of the United States." The problem is Obama didn't say when. Hispanic organizations want him to take action as soon...
Chicagosphere's Mike Doyle Calls for Community Blogger Strategy Day on
2009-06-19 11:33:00
Today, WLUW 88.7-FM's indie audio magazine, Outside the Loop RADIO, interviews Yours Truly sending out a call to action to local bloggers. As I wrote in these virtual pages, last week I participated in a major local media conference and attended another. Both were aimed at finding ways to make online news sustainable in the Windy City. Trouble is, future sustainability didn't turn out to be much of a topic at either. Worse, even with the release of a major report (also covered on Chicagosphere) touting the growing importance of community-oriented websites for disseminating local news, the blogosphere was given short shrift at both events, as well....
Conservative Radio Host Calls Newt and Cheney Zombies
2009-06-17 07:55:00
Republican radio talk show host John Batchelor called out fellow Republicans for helping to push the minority party into possible extinction in a recent Daily Beast article. "The GOP is the equivalent of a shrinking third party on its way to becoming a museum piece beside the Whigs, the Greenbacks, and the Prohibitionists," Batchelor said.Batchelor referred to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, as a "generalissimo of zombies" and goes on to compare both Cheney and Gingrich to zombies feeding on everyone's brains."Fail” is a word that ties together Limbaugh, Gingrich, Cheney ,and [Eric] Cantor, and they use the word like a curse routinely. “Fail, Obama.” “Fail, [Colin] Powell.” “Fail, [Nancy] Pelosi.” “Fail, liberals.” “Fail, Moslems.” “Fail, health care.” “Fail, moderates.” “Fail, city on a hill." The zombies hurl the word at whoever does not look like them or listen to them or need them. They are speaking into the looking glass. “Who’s the fair...

Reliance GSM Gives Free Calls To Attract Subscribers
2009-06-11 06:08:00
Reliance GSM service in a quest to prove its brand positioning of ‘connecting subscribers to their loved one as and when they want’ has started an interactive advertising campaign enabling users to call their friends for free by inputting respective information. To make one minute free call user has to provide details of himself and his friend. The call can be made between 9.00 am and 9.00 pm and automatically connects both mobile numbers. User can also visit Goforit.co.in to avail this service. The service involves a message tone by Hrithik Roshan, brand ambassador for reliance communication and a Reliance GSM jingle. To avoid misuse it also discourages continuous calling to the same number.Although it excludes any disclosure regarding the use of information provided by users . The surprising element is the banner advertising which reliance is using for this campaign on various news site such as Indiatimes, IBNLive & NDTV and is on the similar line of strategy deployed by No...

3G Auction In 2009 And Local Calls At 10 Paisa Says A.Raja
2009-06-02 16:00:00
“Definitely… in 2009 itself” is what was told by A Raja to reporters in New Delhi when he was asked as to when the 3G auctions are expected. The jinxed 3G auctions which have been delayed many times over in the past might just see the light of the day this year if A.Raja is to be believed. The main bone of contention in the 3G auctions has been the license fees which has taken a hit due to the recession. A Raja probably feels that by the end of 2009 the turnaround in the market would be visible and thereby it would be a right time to execute the 3G auctions. Mr A. Raja also created a stir he announced that he expects Telephone tariffs to fall as low as 10 paisa a minute for local calls and 25 paisa for domestic calls seconding the earlier WATblog report. Currently tariff rate for local and domestic calls ranges between 40 paisa to 1.5 rupee per minute differing from plans to operators. Although India is home to the lowest tariff rates, the local call rates has not seen ma...

China expert calls on telecoms
2009-05-07 15:00:00
"Holding both of China’s largest wireless carriers -- China Mobile (NYSE: CHL) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU) gives investors something of a hedge in the event that one company takes a large amount of business from the other," says Jim Trippon. In his The China Stock Alert, he adds, "Although this is a safety measure for investors, we don’t expect massive erosion in either firm’s subscriber base as the telecom sector and 3G service continue to expand in China.""As the world’s largest wireless telephone company, with subscribers numbering more than 477 million, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL) is one of China’s less volatile large cap stocks."The company reported profit growth of 5.2% for the first three months of the year, a rate that disappointed some analysts, leading to a mild decline from China Mobile’s most recent peak price in the $48 range."The company remains attractively valued at approximately half of ...

China expert calls on Chunghwa (CHT)
2009-04-06 14:00:00
"Yes, there are some firm that have been realizing gains in this economic environment and Chunghwa Telecom (NYSE: CHT) is one of them," says Jim Trippon in The China Stock Digest."While Washington debates its economic stimulus program, Beijing continues to pour on the gas. Another $19 billion has just been unleashed on new infrastructure, housing and environmental projects."China has much more still to come. Adding to its financial shot in the arm, Beijing is revamping regulations and tax law to get money moving in the internal economy. "Following a surprising success in a pilot program to get the appliance industry moving, Beijing is now dramatically expanding its rural appliance program. The program subsidizes farmers’ purchases of TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens and mobile phones. "Despite a decline of almost 6% in Taiwan’s GDP, Chunghwa, the nation’s largest phone company delivered a gain to sh...

Puffington Post Calls for Surrender

Earl Ofari Hutchinso, Puffington Post: President Obama and the Democrats should wave the white flag in their strawman war on Rush Limbaugh. The Media Research Center delivered the grim casualty figures for the Democrats. Since January, the top talk show gabber’s ratings have soared off the charts. Radio affiliates that carry Limbaugh’s syndicated show call the ratings boost he’s gotten from the Democrat’s orchestrated attack on him a “dramatic surge.” This writer predicted as much when President Obama cracked to Congressional Republicans in late January that they should knock off listening to Limbaugh if they expected to get anything done in Congress and with his administration Surrender seems to be Barack Obama’s favorite idea. China Auto. Who Calls The Shots?
2009-03-07 19:04:00
Great discussion going on in the blogosphere regarding consolidation/globalization of China's auto industry. I am of the strong view that the issues surrounding China's auto industry extend well beyond that particular industry as they pull in all sorts of issues, including China's companies going international, Chinese government involvement in industry, consumer sentiment, and how to handle manufacturing overcapacity. The ChinaBizGov blog has a new post on the auto industry that does an excellent job setting forth the various issues. The post is entitled, "Auto Industry Consolidation: Who Calls the Shots?" and it has some great links to other blogs (Silicon Hutong, and Aimee Barnes) that have analyzed China auto. I strongly recommend this post.
Hugo Chavez Calls Obama To Socialism
2009-03-07 16:00:00
Via Drudge:Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday called upon US President Barack Obama to follow the path to socialism, which he termed as the "only" way out of the global recession. "Come with us, align yourself, come with us on the road to socialism. This is the only path. Imagine a socialist revolution in the United States," Chavez told a group of workers in the southern Venezuelan state of Bolivar. The controversial Venezuelan leader, who taunted the United States as a source of capitalistic evil under former president George W Bush, added that the United States needs a leader who can take it to a "higher" destiny and bring it out of "the sad role that it has been given, as a murderous, attacking power that is hated all around the world."Chavez said that people are calling Obama a "socialist" for the measures of state intervention he is taking to counter the crisis, so it would not be too far-fetched to suggest that he might join the project of "21st century social...
