GM sweats the engineering at the Nurburgring for the Camaro ZL-1
2011-11-14 16:12:00
We’ll have to admit it: as much as we dislike the Camaro’s rediculous size and bulk, as well as it’s concept car styling (especially the dashboard), we have to admire its engineering. It gets the worldwide platform with IRS that the Ford Mustang is still missing, it takes full benefit of GM’s engine families, and next ...
2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 endures 24-hour track test
2011-10-22 10:43:00
With 30 years of track events under our belts, failures have been the rule rather than the exception. Attacking Watkins Glen with 10.5″ disc brakes up front and 8″ drums in the rear and doing 140 MPH used to be crazy with complete brake swaps necessary each evening of the track weekend. That meant rotors, calipers, ...
Question: Anybody need a 550-HP Supercharged Camaro?
2010-10-07 04:48:00
Answer: of course we do. And as usual Camaro5.com has all the scoop on the upcoming new models of the Camaro, including the 2012 Z28, the 2011 Camaro convertible, and the styling changes coming for 2012: front and rear lights, side mirrors and more - no word yet on the planned and very much needed dashboard change. Momentum Race Group to toss in the Camaro on the Koni Challenge!
2009-09-13 22:46:00
The following press release is no doubt just the first of the Camaros headed for the Koni Challenge. The major difference between the Camaros and Mustangs racing here and in the Rolex series is the engine - the Mustang has raced for several years with an engine that is not a production engine, against competitors with production engines. Unfair? Yes. Would it have been competitive otherwise? Apparently not, since Ford saw fit to force a non-production engine thru the sanctioning bodies. Of course, just about anything can be made to be competitive - look at the success of the original Saturn cars in endurance racing for several years. The Camaro will do well in a form that corresponds to it's production version. That's fair. Press Release follows: PRESS RELEASE:DALLAS, Texas - Momentum Race Group is pleased to announce it will be fielding a new two car team for the 2009 Grand-Am KONI Challenge competition. Featuring the new Riley Technologies-built Camaro, the team is putting to...
95 Camaro with 3.2 SHO engine swap
2009-09-13 21:20:00
The Yamaho 3/3.2 liter SHO engine is a classic engine - one of the best engines produced in the past 20 years. So good that once their host Taurus disintegrates from simple wear or cancerous salt, the engines tend to survive for another day. Their second lives are in usually other Ford products, ranging from swaps into a Ranger and Focus, as well into small sports cars such as a Miata. There there is the extreme: one SHO engine ended up in an off-road vehicle. This latest swap is probably the furthest afield for a SHO engine. So far afield that it's builder was hounded off the SHO forums where he announced his project. This time the mighty Ford SHO engine gets swapped into a common Chevy Camaro.  The builder gets an A for effort (although we have yet to see the car run) and an A for chutzpah.  The builder is located in Cheektowaga, NY - outside Buffalo. The engine swap started in early 2009. The good news is that, after checking on this own...

The New Camaro has a few problems!
2009-07-22 04:00:00
As reported on Camaro5.com, the new Camaro has a couple of things you need to make sure are correct before you leave the dealer. Actually about 70 things. Major things. What a hunk of junk... a georgeous hunk of junk (at least on the outside), but still rather lousy. Camaro convertible prototype coarse and ugly
2009-06-16 01:28:00
Autoblog has the first photos of an actual pre-production Camaro 'vert, scheduled to go into production next summer. Originally it was this summer... but supply problems got in the way. Take a close look at this photo - the A-pillars are *huge*, and just as worse the windshield header is gigantic. And look at the height of the drivers seat - won't many drivers have the header right in their eyes? And then look at the rear side windows... hopefully those do go down all the way (although they are both down to the same position on each side, suggesting they won't) - otherwise some unlucky passenger is going to get speared in the head. If all this is true... then this is one lousy convertible. And that's not even counting how much it must weigh. How does a 4200 pound Camaro SS sound? Sounds SLOW to us.

Will the Camaro Save GM?

Jay Leno sure thinks it will. Over at jaylenosgarage.com, the host of The Tonight Show is running a video about the 2010 Camaro, a vehicle he thinks will be "a hit right out of the box". Green cars and hybrids may be all the rage, but the man who replaced Johnny Carson likens them to "sensible sho

The first new Chevrolet Camaro that gets crashed
2009-04-03 01:53:00
On March 16, the production of the new Chevrolet Camaro officially started. Only four days later, the first crash was recorded on Dundee Road in North Oakville (at least it’s the first crash we’re aware of). We know that everytime a great car is launched these things will happen, it’s just that we weren’t expecting it so soon. It was only a minor crash, not anything terrifying, but the car’s gonna need a new nose, that’s for sure. Well, life goes on, let’s hope it’s gonna be some time before we see any other Camaro crashes. Bullrun 2: Episode 5 – Goodbye Team Camaro.
2009-03-23 21:49:00
This past week on Bullrun remaindered me more of the topsy-turvy 2009 NASCAR season in the fact that strong team such as Team Solstice and Team Lexus that are normally fighting for the top spot in each leg now found themselves either towards or at the bottom, while teams like Team Avalanche and Team Camaro found themselves at the top for what I can remember the first time, but will it continue into the next leg? There are two critical parts needed in a competition like Bullrun, first picking a co-driver/navigator that can find their way from one checkpoint to another. From what is shown on television, it’s always interesting seeing how some of those teams find their way to that next checkpoint with just a simple card that in a lot of cases now doesn’t even list an address or even a state.Of course the second critical part needed in these competition and that is just as important as a co-driver, I’m talking about the vehicle you bring, which in a lot of ways could mean the diffe...

Camaro5.com reports phtogs Camaros outside assembly plant
2009-03-08 16:21:00
Camaro5.com, the best source of information about the 5th-generation Camaro, has snapped some pics outside the Oshawa assembly plant showing over 100 new Camaros lined up and awaiting shipment. Whether these are going to dealers or whether these are the final test fleet isn't clear - although if you look at the other pictures on the site you'll notice that the window stickers are blank.

2010 Camaro goes on sale TODAY!
2008-10-13 13:27:00
The 2010 Camaro goes on sale today. Specs have been known for several weeks, and final prices were just announced yesterday. For the amount of performance delivered, the prices are fabulous. My sole reservations about the car center around it's shear size and weight. 422 Horses in the SS model are going to have to pull ~3900 pounds with a driver. The car is just enormous and while it's well equipped it won't make a good track car. There will be a gigantic rush to order today by many different kinds of enthusiasts. One point really strikes me by the press release below - the Camaro has an IRS and the Mustang doesn't. For all the BS that Ford uttered about how certain enthusiasts don't want it (to cover the fact that it was designed, tested, and ready for production - then cut at the last minute for cost reasons), the inclusion of one isn't stopping the buyers of the Camaro. In fact, these modern specs - especially the excellent V-6 - are seen...

Fergie reveals Camaro SS front end
2008-08-22 14:36:00
The first official picture of the front end of the Camaro SS comes courtesy of an ad placed by GM in a Conde Nast supplement Fashion Rocks. No, we don't read that magazine and wouldn't go anywhere near it, but here it is. We've seen this front end before in spy pics - it differs from the base Camaro in the badging and under the bumper with a deeper and more forward air dam. Interesting that here we are several months before production - with pictures and specs of nearly everything. GM hasn't officially released any other detailed images of the SS, or under-hood engine pictures - but those will come. We'll probably have the complete details and images after the Los Angeles show in November.
A dose of photography - 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS.
2008-07-31 20:29:00
Back in 2006 while I was up in Boston, Massachusetts taking in the World of Wheels show, I came this 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS. This wasn't the first time I had seen this ride in person before as this Camaro was on display at the 2005 World of Wheels too. I really didn't know too much about it from the photo, however while watching an episode of NOPI Tunervision, they featured this very ride with the owner. From what the owner said, the Camaro features a 502 V8, C5 corvette taillights and was built in 9 months. what an amazing Camaro. 2010 Camaro Press Introduction and specs
2008-07-21 22:18:00
You have to hand it to Chevrolet... they beat the Mustang again, hands down. When you compare the standard 300-HP V-6 engine in the Camaro to the lowly 210 HP V-6 in the Mustang... ther eis no comparison. When you compare the standard across-the-board (all Camaros, all options) 6-speed transmisisons (auto and manual) to ye old T-5 in the V-6 Mustang (a transmission that literally dates back to 1983) and the 5-speed autos and manuals in the other models - saving the 6-speed manual only for the Shelby - there is no comparison. And, of course, the Camaro has a standard IRS... something that Ford designed for the Mustang and then dropped at the last moment. Official 2010 Camaro specs now available
2008-07-21 21:40:00
GM has released the specs, along with a nice document that describes the upcoming car. http://www.drivingenthusiast.ne-t/sec-gm/camaro/2010/camarospec-s.pdf  (suggest <right click> and "open in new tab>) Full specs, colors, and extensive images are on Chevy's own site: http://www.chevrolet.com/camaro-/  (suggest <right click> and "open in new tab>) And, if you're wondering how it stacks up against the new Challenger, as well as the existing Mustang, try this comparison chart: http://challenger.drivingenthus-iast.net/sec-competition/index.-htm  (suggest <right click> and "open in new tab>). The V-8 Challenger gains a 6-speed manual and limited slip diff in 2009. The Mustang remains unchanged for a shortened 2009 model year, then gets a re-skin for 2010.
What happened to the Brembos on the Camaro?
2008-07-20 20:06:00
Looks like the bean counters have hit the Camaro... it's lost it's rear Brembo calipers and gone back to a single-piston caliper. Look at the 1st picture below of the production Camaro SS: small 4-piston Brembos on the front only. And compare that to the 2nd picture of the Camaro testing at the Nurburgring several weeks ago - larger front Brembos and 4-piston rear Brembos. Rotor sizes have also been downgraded - particularly at the rear. And lest you think that rear brakes don't make that much difference, remember that the Camaro is a 52/48% fr/rr weight balance car - unlike the grotesquely obese Shelby at 58.5% in the front (same as most front wheel drive cars!). So, yes, a 4-wheel multi-piston braking system would have made a phenomenal difference for the Camaro. So, either the bean counters made a last-minute cut in production spec, or the Nurburgring car wasn't production-based, or the Nurburgring car was a higher level car such as the supercharged Camaro Z28 - w...
Production Camaro Revealed
2008-07-18 15:47:00
Several sites beat Monday's planned introduction by GM by releasing sets of photos today. Autoweek has an overview here, with full details after next Monday afternoon: http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pb-cs.dll/article?AID=/20080718/FR-EE/261484376/1528/newsletter01&-nbsp; However - as usual - the folks at Camaro5.com have the full set of photos: http://www.camaro5-.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51-71  and the specs of the first two engines that will be be offered: a standard 296-HP 3.6 V-6 and a 416-HP 6.2 V-8. The V-8 model weighs 3700 pounds and has a 52/48 weight balance. Furthermore, the V-8 has variable cylinder shut-off and with the 6-speed transmission will have extraordinarily low revs at highway cruising speeds. Like the Corvette with the similar engine and transmission, careful drivers will find high-20s on the highway. Both V-8 and V-6 models "blow away" the Mustang by a considerable margin. And rumor has it that the 2010 Mustang ...

The 2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS ? Now a 2010
2008-06-03 04:08:00
Two-and-a-half years ago, the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit turned out to be quite festival of retro-design. After all, among the cars displayed there were a new Dodge Challenger, a new Shelby Mustang, and a new Chevrolet Camaro ? a line up previously seen over 30 years before. For much of the next two years, there were hints in the press that Chevrolet’s offering, the re-vamped Chevrolet Camaro SS, would be put into production in the first quarter of this year ? 2008 ? and put on the market late in the year, as a 2009 model. Last March, however, everything changed. Chevrolet decided that it would make better business sense if the Camaro was pushed back, and so, instead of an early 2008 introduction and a short life during the year as a 2009 model before switching to a 2010 designation, production would begin in February 2009, and the car would be a 2010 model until the fall of that year, when it would switch to a 2011 designation. All this, of course,...

Worker at GM plant fired over Camaro photo leak
2008-06-01 03:57:00
Worker at GM plant fired over Camaro photo leak An electrician working at General Motors' Oshawa Assembly Plant lost his job this past week after company officials linked him to the leak of several photos showing a prototype Camaro body shell. The photos found their way onto the internet May 22nd and were published by multiple major automotive websites, including Leftlane. Details of the leak come via a source within the plant, who claims to have intimate knowledge of the controversy. According to our tipster, the employee — who has 28 years seniority — used a camera phone to take pictures of the body to show to his children at home. Unfortunately for the unidentified employee, friends of his children got ahold of the photos and distributed them on the Web. It's not known exactly what the photos depict, but it appears GM might be starting to test the assembly process at the Oshawa, Ontario plant, where the Camaro (and other Zeta-platform variants...

The 2010 Chevy Camaro Preview
2008-05-23 07:12:00
The 2010 Chevy Camaro is one of the most highly-anticipated new vehicles to come from GM in years. Ever since it was announced, a stream of pics and speculation have fed ever growing excitement for the reborn muscle car's return. Enthusiasts have already seen virtual road tests, camo-free spy shots, and even videos of the car in action, but now one intrepid spy has managed to take things a step further -- they may be a little blurry, but someone captured an example of the 2010 Camaro making its way down the production line. It's unclear where or when they were taken, but speculation is these pics are from GM's Oshawa, Ontario plant where the Camaro will be built. Given that the car is set to launch as a 2010 model (and the assembly line is conspicuously empty) these are almost certainly just preproduction examples, but it's interesting to see how the hot new coupe will be put together. One surprising thing about the photos is the complete lack of human beings in them -- meaning ...

More Camaro pictures (!) - V6 engine
2008-05-23 02:32:00
An old saying: "It never rains but it pours"     Meaning: When troubles come they come together.     Origin: A proverbial phrase. The origin is unknown but the phrase itself was known by the early 18th century. For example, this item from a work by John Arbuthnot, 1726: "It cannot rain but it pours; or London strow'd with rarities." Troubles, in this case, in the form of leaks for for GM security to investigate. Even more pictures became available on Camaro5.com late today - this time they are of the V-6 engine. It appears, although it's not confirmed yet, to be the direct-injected 3.6 liter DOHC VVT V-6. If not, it's the port-injected engine of the same displacement. This is the same one that attendees of GM's Camaro focus group event saw and drove this week to wide and universal acclaim. One big question remains: does it have direct injection (DI)? The engine looks like the Caddy direct-injected version of this same basic engine, ho...
