Fergie reveals Camaro SS front end
2008-08-22 14:36:00
The first official picture of the front end of the Camaro SS comes courtesy of an ad placed by GM in a Conde Nast supplement Fashion Rocks. No, we don't read that magazine and wouldn't go anywhere near it, but here it is. We've seen this front end before in spy pics - it differs from the base Camaro in the badging and under the bumper with a deeper and more forward air dam. Interesting that here we are several months before production - with pictures and specs of nearly everything. GM hasn't officially released any other detailed images of the SS, or under-hood engine pictures - but those will come. We'll probably have the complete details and images after the Los Angeles show in November.
2010 Camaro Press Introduction and specs
2008-07-21 22:18:00
You have to hand it to Chevrolet... they beat the Mustang again, hands down. When you compare the standard 300-HP V-6 engine in the Camaro to the lowly 210 HP V-6 in the Mustang... ther eis no comparison. When you compare the standard across-the-board (all Camaros, all options) 6-speed transmisisons (auto and manual) to ye old T-5 in the V-6 Mustang (a transmission that literally dates back to 1983) and the 5-speed autos and manuals in the other models - saving the 6-speed manual only for the Shelby - there is no comparison. And, of course, the Camaro has a standard IRS... something that Ford designed for the Mustang and then dropped at the last moment. Chevrolet press release follows: FOR RELEASE: 2008-07-21 Chevrolet Unveils The 2010 Camaro - A Fun, Efficient Sports Car For The 21st Century   function SetValues(){var getx = 'window.event.clientX'; var gety = "window.event.clientY";} .wordtodisplay{font-family:aria-l; font-size:16px; color:#ff0000; cu...
Official 2010 Camaro specs now available
2008-07-21 21:40:00
GM has released the specs, along with a nice document that describes the upcoming car. http://www.drivingenthusiast.ne-t/sec-gm/camaro/2010/camarospec-s.pdf  (suggest <right click> and "open in new tab>) Full specs, colors, and extensive images are on Chevy's own site: http://www.chevrolet.com/camaro-/  (suggest <right click> and "open in new tab>) And, if you're wondering how it stacks up against the new Challenger, as well as the existing Mustang, try this comparison chart: http://challenger.drivingenthus-iast.net/sec-competition/index.-htm  (suggest <right click> and "open in new tab>). The V-8 Challenger gains a 6-speed manual and limited slip diff in 2009. The Mustang remains unchanged for a shortened 2009 model year, then gets a re-skin for 2010.
What happened to the Brembos on the Camaro?
2008-07-20 20:06:00
Looks like the bean counters have hit the Camaro... it's lost it's rear Brembo calipers and gone back to a single-piston caliper. Look at the 1st picture below of the production Camaro SS: small 4-piston Brembos on the front only. And compare that to the 2nd picture of the Camaro testing at the Nurburgring several weeks ago - larger front Brembos and 4-piston rear Brembos. Rotor sizes have also been downgraded - particularly at the rear. And lest you think that rear brakes don't make that much difference, remember that the Camaro is a 52/48% fr/rr weight balance car - unlike the grotesquely obese Shelby at 58.5% in the front (same as most front wheel drive cars!). So, yes, a 4-wheel multi-piston braking system would have made a phenomenal difference for the Camaro. So, either the bean counters made a last-minute cut in production spec, or the Nurburgring car wasn't production-based, or the Nurburgring car was a higher level car such as the supercharged Camaro Z28 - w...
Production Camaro Revealed
2008-07-18 15:47:00
Several sites beat Monday's planned introduction by GM by releasing sets of photos today. Autoweek has an overview here, with full details after next Monday afternoon: http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pb-cs.dll/article?AID=/20080718/FR-EE/261484376/1528/newsletter01&-nbsp; However - as usual - the folks at Camaro5.com have the full set of photos: http://www.camaro5-.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51-71  and the specs of the first two engines that will be be offered: a standard 296-HP 3.6 V-6 and a 416-HP 6.2 V-8. The V-8 model weighs 3700 pounds and has a 52/48 weight balance. Furthermore, the V-8 has variable cylinder shut-off and with the 6-speed transmission will have extraordinarily low revs at highway cruising speeds. Like the Corvette with the similar engine and transmission, careful drivers will find high-20s on the highway. Both V-8 and V-6 models "blow away" the Mustang by a considerable margin. And rumor has it that the 2010 Mustang ...

Hemmings Cruise-Ins: The 1968 Chevy Camaro SS

Forty years ago, cars were cooler and gas was cheaper. The first part of that statement is just my opinion, of course, but you'll have to forgive me. I recently attended my first cruise-in at Hemmings Motor News in Bennington, Vermont. The weather in the Green Mountain State wasn't exactly s
The 2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS ? Now a 2010
2008-06-03 04:08:00
Two-and-a-half years ago, the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit turned out to be quite festival of retro-design. After all, among the cars displayed there were a new Dodge Challenger, a new Shelby Mustang, and a new Chevrolet Camaro ? a line up previously seen over 30 years before. For much of the next two years, there were hints in the press that Chevrolet’s offering, the re-vamped Chevrolet Camaro SS, would be put into production in the first quarter of this year ? 2008 ? and put on the market late in the year, as a 2009 model. Last March, however, everything changed. Chevrolet decided that it would make better business sense if the Camaro was pushed back, and so, instead of an early 2008 introduction and a short life during the year as a 2009 model before switching to a 2010 designation, production would begin in February 2009, and the car would be a 2010 model until the fall of that year, when it would switch to a 2011 designation. All this, of course,...

I regret to say, there are no plans at this time for the Trans Am to come back. But, you know if the Camaro is a huge hit what will happen. GM will have a Pontiac, GMC, Saturn, and maybe even a Buick version of the same car!
Worker at GM plant fired over Camaro photo leak
2008-06-01 03:57:00
Worker at GM plant fired over Camaro photo leak An electrician working at General Motors' Oshawa Assembly Plant lost his job this past week after company officials linked him to the leak of several photos showing a prototype Camaro body shell. The photos found their way onto the internet May 22nd and were published by multiple major automotive websites, including Leftlane. Details of the leak come via a source within the plant, who claims to have intimate knowledge of the controversy. According to our tipster, the employee — who has 28 years seniority — used a camera phone to take pictures of the body to show to his children at home. Unfortunately for the unidentified employee, friends of his children got ahold of the photos and distributed them on the Web. It's not known exactly what the photos depict, but it appears GM might be starting to test the assembly process at the Oshawa, Ontario plant, where the Camaro (and other Zeta-platform variants...

2010 Camaro V6 : First Look

The 2010 Chevy Camaro Preview
2008-05-23 07:12:00
The 2010 Chevy Camaro is one of the most highly-anticipated new vehicles to come from GM in years. Ever since it was announced, a stream of pics and speculation have fed ever growing excitement for the reborn muscle car's return. Enthusiasts have already seen virtual road tests, camo-free spy shots, and even videos of the car in action, but now one intrepid spy has managed to take things a step further -- they may be a little blurry, but someone captured an example of the 2010 Camaro making its way down the production line. It's unclear where or when they were taken, but speculation is these pics are from GM's Oshawa, Ontario plant where the Camaro will be built. Given that the car is set to launch as a 2010 model (and the assembly line is conspicuously empty) these are almost certainly just preproduction examples, but it's interesting to see how the hot new coupe will be put together. One surprising thing about the photos is the complete lack of human beings in them -- meaning ...

More Camaro pictures (!) - V6 engine
2008-05-23 02:32:00
An old saying: "It never rains but it pours"     Meaning: When troubles come they come together.     Origin: A proverbial phrase. The origin is unknown but the phrase itself was known by the early 18th century. For example, this item from a work by John Arbuthnot, 1726: "It cannot rain but it pours; or London strow'd with rarities." Troubles, in this case, in the form of leaks for for GM security to investigate. Even more pictures became available on Camaro5.com late today - this time they are of the V-6 engine. It appears, although it's not confirmed yet, to be the direct-injected 3.6 liter DOHC VVT V-6. If not, it's the port-injected engine of the same displacement. This is the same one that attendees of GM's Camaro focus group event saw and drove this week to wide and universal acclaim. One big question remains: does it have direct injection (DI)? The engine looks like the Caddy direct-injected version of this same basic engine, ho...
Camaro5.com gets Camaro production line images
2008-05-22 04:23:00
The folks at Camaro5.com have pulled off a second scoop in the same day: images of a pre-production Camaro going down the asssembly line at GM's Oshawa assembly plant. No, the Camaro is not going into pre-production phase: that doesn't happen until the end of the year. And there won't be any production cars built (for-sale) until February. Instead, these very early cars save money since they don't have to be built by hand, they test assemblies received from contractors, they ensure the car will go together properly when the time comes, and they allow engineers to make (very) minor changes if they should be needed. Above all, they help ensure that Job#1 will be RIGHT. And while I'm not on the market for a new Camaro, as a Driving Enthusiast and car nut I'm always interested in seeing how things go together. In this case, two things stand out right away: the inherent strength of the structure, including the front strut attachment and reinforcement (look at each side of the stru...

Camaro5.com has the scoop on the latest Camaro focus group
2008-05-21 22:04:00
General Motors product development engineers have been busy finalizing details of the upcoming 5th-gen Camaro, and the Camaro5.com forum has an inside story on the focus group that was held by GM in their product development center last weekend. Several lucky very fortunate forum members were invited to attend and were treated to a unique - but confidential - show. "Maximum" Bob Lutz even did a fly-by in his personal jet plane!    &-nbsp;  What is a focus group? It's a formal meeting (usually with a non-disclosure agreement in place) held by a vendor to brings together groups of existing and/or potential owners to show them future products and to methodically solicit reaction/feedback- to specific items. In this example, the attendees were asked a long list of questions pertaining to specific parts. Holden Commodore set to go green; Pontiac G8, Chevrolet Camaro next?
2008-05-19 18:44:00
Holden Commodore set to go green; Pontiac G8, Chevrolet Camaro next? General Motors group vice president Nick Reilly was recently in Melbourne, Australia for Holden's quarterly strategy meeting and revealed some interesting possibilities for the future of the Holden Commodore — including diesel and hybrid powerplants. Reilly confirmed that Holden will release hybrid vehicles in the next "couple of years" and continued to say that the Commodore "could be one of the first hybrids you could see [in Australia from GM]. I would put a time frame on that of probably a couple of years,? according to Drive.com. Reilly also indicated that a diesel Commodore is on the way. ?We don?t yet have a diesel Commodore but that will come,? he says. Lastly, Reilly confirmed that a four-cylinder Commodore is being "looked at." As we have reported before (and even shown in spy photos), General Motors is readying a Buick Park Avenue — which is based on the Holde...
Chevrolet Camaro to debut before mid-September

Camaro5.com: the premier source of all things 5th-gen
2008-05-15 21:21:00
Camaro5.com a great site, and it's run well. Better yet, they always have the absolute latest imagery of the upcoming all-new Camaro. This time it's a detailed interior shot and it's an opportunity to see a lot of previously unknown details. Follow the link in the title above to their forum for the full discussion. Reaction to the retro interior is decidedly mixed amoungst the readers. There are problems with the radio and steering wheel. The placement of the secondary gauges on the console - while true to the original car - is also not well received. To me, the low dashboard and raised major gauges serve to lighten up the interior. The Camaro is a large car - perhaps too large. The dashboard could well have been cavernous - but instead is expansive.  I do have a problem with the steering wheel - it looks too much like the one in the Mustang and I never liked round airbag pads. It reminds me of a bumper car in an amusement park. The radio and climate controls ...

Camaro at Nurburgring with 4-wheel 4-piston Brembos
2008-04-07 23:53:00
Brenda Priddy has captured the upcoming Camaro at the Nurburgring. Lots of details shown. Note the important differences here between the Camaro and Mustang:  GM routinely tests at the Nurburgring. Ford of North America never does. Jaguar tests there (oops, that's not Ford anymore). Ford of Europe's most recent test there was the upcoming 350-horsepower Focus RS. Does Ford test anywhere significant? Will an off-the-lot non-R Mustang run hard on a hot race track without blowing it's coolant all over the place? Unlikely. Will a Camaro? Yes - it's being done at the Nurburgring right now. Does the Mustang use 4-wheel Brembo brakes? No. The Camaro and Challenger both have them as options - 4-piston type at all 4 corners. The cancelled Mustang Cobra had 4-wheel Brembos, all with 4-pistons, and an IRS as well - but all that was cancelled. Here's the picture of the rear Brembos that were teamed with the IRS: http://www.drivingenthusiast.ne-t/sec-my-automobilia/sec-imho/2-...

Chevrolet forecasts 2009 Camaro sales
2008-04-04 09:23:00
Some scant details pertaining to the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro’s capabilities have emerged ahead of its launch. The new millennium muscle car 2009 Camaro from Chevy will feature a 6.0-litre V8 engine dispensing over 300kW/ 400 bhp. This will not be the only engine derivative of course, because Chevy is aiming to cast the net wide with Camaro, make it reach as many customers and admirers as possible. It is speculated that in addition to the 6-speed manual, a semi-automatic will also be fitted. Therefore a 200kW/ 270bhp 3.6 will be on offer as an option for those either too chicken (or simply not skilled enough) to realize its full potential or can’t afford the benefits of the hemispherical (hemi) V8. Hemi will of course offer the current benefits of fuel saving by shutting down four cylinders during times when eight are least needed.GM is intimating at annual sales of up to 100,000 units all over the world, including the convertible version. Markets will include North America, Europe,...

The Chevrolet Camaro is preparing for its launch and has been caught undergoing testing multiple times now.
