2008-04-03 05:33:00 I, being a baseball nut, I watched both the Nationals and Orioles games on MLB.tv while working.This evening, I saw a lot of green in the stands as it was probably open seating night -- I could not believe it, but then I saw this photo on ESPN.com.There's no sugar coating this.According to the box score, the paid attendance was 10,505 - the lowest in Camden Yards history, and people are staying away not only because of the weather and we're playing the Rays, but the team is bad and we have no marquee players at all (sans Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts). Yes, we've got 79 more home games to go, but this scene is a bad, bad omen.As a fan, this is painful to see - really. Maybe things can change sooner rather than later.God forbid what the attendance would be if the Yankees and Red Sox didn't come to town 18 times a year.On the bright side, we won, 9-6, and perhaps Huff is starting to heat up in April.

This short series of gloomy, ambiguous paintings displays a remarkable atmosphere of listlessness, exhausted prostitutes in dull, grubby rooms. I had thought they were influenced directly by the report of a murder of a prostitute in 1907. However, Sickert had already painted and sketched some, with airily innocent titles such as "A Summer Afternoon" and "What Shall We Do About THe Rent?", the latter of a naked, prone woman on a bed, a clothed man, arms folded, looming over her, as if in resigned conversation. Given the alternative title Sickert later applied to it, "Camden Town Murder 1", the opportunity for reappraising and rereading are clear. I think it is this provocative, playful ambiguity that is the real strength of the series. A group of temporary workers who clean up Camden Yards after games has decided to go on a hunger strike to draw attention to their demands for a living wage. The strike was supposed to begin yesterday, but the workers decided to postpone it until Saturday after positive remarks from state officials. The workers are currently earning $7 an hour and they want to earn the city’s living wage rate of $9.62 an hour. The strike isn’t actually the Orioles problem—it’s a state issue and the state will deal with it—but it is symbolic of the “mess” the Orioles have become.
